KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPEN

On Campus Plus has been developed around a crucial fact: the student you are today is not the student you will be in one, two or three years' time. As you develop and grow — academically, linguistically and culturally — it makes sense to keep your options open with so many great university choices available to you. Otherwise the decisions you take today could deny you better opportunities tomorrow.

On Campus Plus keeps your options open because it is based around the two core pillars of flexibility and choice within the American education system:

1

2

See pages 12 – 13 for more details.

The US University Transfer System: Flexibility of University Choice In the USA, it is common for American students to transfer from one institution to another in order to complete their degree. In fact, over 2.5 million do so each year. This is because credits gained at one school are accepted by other universities. So as students improve academically they can aim for a higher ranked or more specialized university to complete their degree. While common, the transfer process requires specialized support from expert counselors. See how Kings Advisors will work with you on pages 27 and 29.

THE KINGS DIFFERENCE

A Liberal Arts Education: Flexibility of Subject Choice A Liberal Arts education is a respected educational model at hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the USA. It equips you with the broad range of skills, experience and knowledge which employers demand. And, crucially, it gives you the time and support to decide on the best subject options for your major and final degree.

A LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION

The Liberal Arts system in the USA is based on an educational approach originally pioneered by the Ancient Greeks. They regarded a general Liberal Arts education as the ultimate mark of an educated person. Today, a Liberal Arts degree program in the USA is broad in scope, covering a range of interdisciplinary subjects across the humanities, social, natural and formal sciences.

There are hundreds of dedicated Liberal Arts colleges in the USA, with many among the most respected schools in the country. Liberal Arts colleges are generally much smaller and more personal than large state or research universities. They emphasize student participation and encourage a high level of student / teacher interaction, mentorship and collaboration.

Regular Access to Professors

This contrasts with main research universities where general undergraduate teaching is usually done by graduate assistants or teaching assistants.

Providing Time to Make the Right Subject Choices

An Excellent Foundation for Graduate-level Study A Liberal Arts degree also provides an excellent foundation for graduate study in Healthcare, Law, Business, or other fields. Students with a Liberal Arts background are sought after by graduate schools because they are able to demonstrate an ability to think independently and to learn across a diverse field of studies. With closer contact with professors it is usually much easier for students to acquire the vital personal letters of recommendation they need for acceptance to graduate school.

Liberal Arts Degrees A Liberal Arts degree is usually earned over four years of full-time study. Students earn either a B.A. or a B.S. Diploma and can then progress to either a graduate school or a professional school. The first year or two are devoted to general educational requirements. This involves the mandatory study of a broad range of subjects which can be tailored within distinct pathways.

Typical Majors Towards the end of Year 2 you will specialize by declaring your major and minor in a specific area. There is a huge range of options available to you. The great benefit of the Liberal Arts system is that no matter where you choose to start your degree you always have a similar range of major options available to you. Typical subject categories available for your major include:

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Architecture Business and Management Computer Science Communications Digital Media Economics and Finance Engineering / Pre-Engineering Fine Arts Health Sciences and Nursing Humanities Law / Pre-Law Mathematics Music / Performing Arts Natural Sciences Political Science Pre-Medicine Psychology Social Sciences

For details about the main majors available at each of the Kings campus locations see pages 39 – 59.

COMPLETE YOUR DEGREE

The system is designed to introduce you to a broad range of subjects — some of which you may not have studied before. So, even if you have a clear picture about what you want to study now, you have the time to either confirm that decision, or to investigate alternatives.

Liberal Arts teaches you to think more broadly and to make these connections. As a result, it teaches you to become a more rounded, more employable individual with transferable skills.

The most highly regarded Liberal Arts Colleges in the US include:

START YOUR DEGREE

At Liberal Arts colleges the main undergraduate teaching is typically conducted by professors with long-standing subject expertise. With more discussion based learning, professors will guide students to understand course content by helping them make meaningful connections across subjects.

Today’s global employers are not looking for candidates with very narrow expertise or interests. Instead, they want people who can see the bigger picture and can understand how their own area of expertise fits into a wider context.

Highly Ranked Colleges

THE KINGS DIFFERENCE

With a low student to faculty ratio and a focus on full-time teaching and mentoring, Liberal Arts colleges are the perfect institutions for international students to become accustomed to life and learning at a US university.

THE US TRANSFER SYSTEM

Right now, you probably don’t know which university, which degree, and which major is right for you. With Kings, you don’t need to make decisions today which will affect your future forever. That's because, with Kings carefully guiding you throughout the US transfer process, you always have choice when it comes to your dream school. Your progression is guaranteed. Your options remain open.

HOW IT WORKS US TRANSFER SYSTEM

It is common for American students to transfer between schools during a four-year degree. The credit system allows academic credits gained in one year to be transferred to the following year at another university.

Your final degree award does not define you as a transfer student. Your graduation Diploma will only be from the university you transferred to, not the one at which you started.

• Less competitive year 2 entry: Universities receive a much

higher number of applications for freshman entry than they do for sophomore or junior entry.

• Smaller classes in Year 1: Highly-ranked universities often

have very large classes with over 100 students. Our carefully selected campuses for Year 1 provide a smaller, more personal environment in which to become familiar with the US education system.

• TOEFL or SAT can be waived: Some transfer options may

• Dedicated support in the USA: Kings Progression Advisors

are on campus to help you maximize your options, help you choose the best university, develop your personal statement, and devise a successful application strategy.

On many other aspects Kings also really helped, like the essay writing, preparing materials — they were really helpful. As a Chinese student at first, I was so overwhelmed. How could I talk to the others? How could I respond to the teachers in the classes? But soon I noticed that professors and advisors, they’re there for you, they’re just all set to go — to help you and guide you, and soon I got totally fine with the studies, and life here in the US.
