Transition from Warwick Preparatory School to King’s High School

Caroline Renton Head King’s High School

Hellen Dodsworth Headmistress Warwick Preparatory School

There has always been a special bond between King’s High and Warwick Prep which was strengthened when we once again came together as one school in 2016. The ways in which we collaborate are constantly evolving, with a wide range of opportunities which benefit pupils of all ages. However, with the majority of of girls transferring from Prep to King’s, we have changed the transition process for Prep pupils. This leaflet sets out the revised process, but should you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Transfer process to King’s It is rare for girls from Warwick Preparatory School not to be offered a place at King’s High, and because of this, the transfer arrangements between Prep and King’s have changed, as they have between Warwick Junior School and Warwick School. On the basis of their progress at Warwick Prep and their aptitude, pupils will be offered a guaranteed place at King’s. If there are any concerns, the Entrance Examination will be used to determine a place, as with candidates from outside the Foundation. Information Pack, Prospectus, Scholarship Booklet To ease the transfer process, parents are now no longer required to complete an application form to register their daughter for King’s. Parents of all Year 5 girls will be sent an information pack, including the latest Prospectus and Scholarship Booklet. Individual Visit to King’s during the Spring and Summer Term of Year 5 We value getting to know our Year 5 girls and their parents, and individual family visits to King’s are still a key part of the transition process. We invite all parents to bring their daughter to King’s on a normal school day to meet the Head, Mrs Renton, or a member of the Senior Team. This personal visit combines a short tour of the school, and a meeting with the Head of Admissions. Lasting just over an hour, this appointment can be arranged at a time and date to suit you. To make an appointment please contact King’s High Admissions.

Academic Scholarships/Subject Scholarships All girls who sit the Entrance Examination will be considered for Academic Scholarships. Additionally, we invite girls to apply for up to two Scholarships plus the All-Rounder. Those wishing to take part in the assessment programme will need to complete the relevant Scholarship application form from within the Scholarship Booklet and return this along with any supporting portfolios before the deadline date of 10 September 2021.

Outcome of the Entrance Examination For those with guaranteed places, the outcome will determine whether they are to be considered for Academic Scholarships. For those without a guaranteed place, the outcome will determine whether they are offered a place. The results of the exam are important, enabling us to gain a good understanding of the entire cohort seeking to join King’s. We also believe that the exam is an important rite of passage for the girls.

Subject Scholarship Workshops We run Scholarship Workshops during the Summer Term and girls are invited to sign up to those that are of interest. An email with a link to an online booking form will be sent out to all Prep parents once the dates have been confirmed. Girls may attend up to three workshops.

Academic Scholars’ Interview Day Parents of girls who are being considered as potential Academic Scholars will be contacted by telephone.

Subject Scholarship Assessments These will take place in the week before the Entrance Examination with final interviews for some subjects taking place the week after the exam. Entrance Examination Prep girls will sit the Examination at Warwick Prep on the same day as the rest of the applicants. Parents will receive a letter giving details of the arrangements for the day in good time before the exam. The Examination comprises: • English Comprehension and Creative Writing • Maths • Verbal Reasoning

Timing of Confirmation of Scholarship Awards and Places Parents whose daughter’s place is dependent on the outcome of the Examination will be informed of the result during the week after the exam. Parents will be informed of awards at the same time as non-Prep candidates by letter, usually posted out in the first week of November.

Getting to know your daughter

Moving up to Senior School is always a big step and we want all girls to be able to look forward with eager anticipation, excitement, and confidence, to this next phase in their lives. We believe that getting to know your daughter whilst she progresses through Years 5 and 6 is hugely beneficial for both her and us. By attending events your daughter will start to familiarise herself with the school, and will meet the key members of staff who will support her when she transfers to King’s and we will start to get to know her as an individual. There are many opportunities for your daughter to visit King’s during Years 5 and 6. Some of these visits will be as part of her timetable at Prep, whilst others are optional. Visits include: • Taster Mornings • Open Days • Curriculum Workshops • Scholarship Workshops • Assemblies • Lunches • Specific pre-transfer Year 6 events: December – a pre-Christmas activity January – a Quiz February – The ‘King’s Tea’ Summer Term – Tea and meet your new family Summer Term – House Breakfast June – Induction Afternoon We place great value on the relationship we have with all our Foundation families and encourage parents to visit us at any time during the transfer period.

Mrs Shirley Watson Deputy Head Pastoral

Mrs Clare Topping Head of Year 7

Mrs Lucie Harris Head of Learning Support

I look forward to welcoming you and your daughter. Caroline Renton Head
