Dear Parents, On Friday 4 May our Year 11 students go on study leave ahead of their GCSE examinations. They have worked incredibly hard and it is now important that they use their remaining time ahead of the examinations productively and effectively to consolidate their learning and to practise exam-style questions. I wish them every success and I am sure that their efforts will be rewarded on results day. Our academic departments at King’s have and will continue to deliver the very best support and preparation for the examinations. In this booklet you will find all of the important information regarding key dates, academic support sessions, and results day. If you have any additional questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Hewitt or myself. Yours sincerely,
Dr SJ Burley

EXAMINATION LEAVE ARRANGEMENTS
Mrs Hewitt’s letter of 28 April outlined the important details regarding study leave, which begins on Friday 4 May and ends on Friday 6 July, when all girls returning to King’s for the sixth- form begin their induction programme. During study leave your daughter will only be required to be in school on days when she has examinations, arriving by 8.35am when she has a morning examination and by 1.15pm when she has an afternoon examination. Lunch will be available at 12.30pm. She may choose to be in school to revise when she does not have an examination and some girls find the routine of the school day helps them to structure their revision time. It must, however, be stressed that any girl who chooses to stay in school will be expected to revise sensibly in the designated rooms. There will be provision for silent revision as well as a room designated for paired work. Listed below are the weekly academic support sessions that departments are offering to Year 11 students during study leave. These sessions run from the beginning of study leave to the final examination for each subject. With the exception of Design and Technology, all sessions are optional and students are required to email their teachers in advance of each session to register their attendance.

THE NEW GRADING SYSTEM (9-1) Due to the ongoing process of government reform to GCSEs, some GCSE results will be graded from 9-1, whilst others remain on the alphabetical grading system from A*-G. At King’s High the GCSEs in Drama, English Language, English Literature, Food Prep, Geography, History, Latin, Mathematics, Music, PE and Religious Studies will be graded from 9 - 1; all other results will be graded A* to G. The new numerical grading system is intended to help provide more differentiation, especially among higher achieving students. These are the key points to bear in mind with regard to the numerical grading system: Grade 9 will be the top grade and grade 1 will be the bottom grade on the numerical scale Grade 9 will be the equivalent to a very top A* grade; therefore, it will be very hard to achieve Grades 4 and above will be regarded as a ‘pass’ grade, equivalent to the C grade on the alphabetical system. Grade 4 will be considered a ‘pass’, whereas grade 5 will be considered a ‘good pass’ In the first year each reformed GCSE subject is introduced, broadly the same proportion of students will get grades 1, 4 and 7 and above as would have got grades G, C and A and above respectively on the old system. A formula will be used that means that around 20% of all grades at 7 or above will be a grade 9 The percentage award of grades will be approximately the same for all equivalent GCSE grades on the numerical and alphabetical systems in the first year that the numerical system is introduced. By 2019, all GCSE qualifications will be graded using the new numerical system but for the cohort examined in Summer 2018 a mixed portfolio of numerical and alphabetical grades will be awarded.

RESULTS DAY GCSE results are available on the morning of Thursday 23 August. There are two methods of accessing your daughter’s GCSE results:
Electronically (6am) Examination results will be available via iSAMS from 6am via your daughter’s user name and password on her portal page. This means that your daughter’s results will be accessible by her from anywhere with an internet connection if she is not at home on results day. Accessing examination results on iSAMS is straightforward. Your daughter simply needs to log on to her iSAMS page in the normal way and once in the ‘Results’ section click on ‘View Results’. I would recommend that she checks that her log in details work correctly well in advance of results day so that any issues can be rectified in advance.
In person (9am) GCSE examination results will also be available for collection in person from the Sixth Form Centre Common Room from 9.00 am until 10.00 am on Thursday 24 August. If collected from school, results should be collected in person by your daughter. Entry from 9.00am will be via the rear of the Sixth-Form Centre or the maintenance gate. Results collected in person on the day allows any issues arising to be dealt with promptly by the senior staff present. They will be present until 10.00 am to assist with any immediate queries you or your daughter may have and after 10.00 am they will be available for arranged appointments if your daughter needs a longer conversation. It is our policy that we do not issue results by telephone or to any designated third party.

POST-RESULTS SERVICES Following the publication of examination results on 23 August, all students can request an ‘Enquiry about Results’ and access to their script. Parents will be able to download instructions for this process from the parent portal pages and the forms will be available online and in hard copy on results day. In signing and submitting the ‘Enquiries about Results Form’, the examination paper will be reviewed by the relevant board and it is very important to note that the original grade awarded could go up or down. In the majority of cases there is no change in the original result. For this reason, we strongly advise that an Enquiry about Results Form is submitted only after consultation with the relevant Head of Department and once the result is understood in relation to the grade boundaries. For GCSEs, specific marks only become available to the school at the same time as results slips are handed out, and these are sometimes sent through on paper. This means that we cannot always pass on how close a result is to a grade boundary on results day, although staff will endeavour to provide this information as soon as possible. In many cases, it is advisable to pursue an enquiry if the result is at the high end of a grade boundary and in a ‘subjective subject’. However, if there are any queries about results, it is always best to speak to the relevant Head of Department or senior member of staff. At GCSE the options available are: Return of the original exam script Return of a photocopy of the exam script [Edexcel, Eduqas and OCR only] Clerical check (with or without a copy of the script) Review of Marking (with or without a copy of the script) The deadline for Enquiries about Results is Wednesday 19 September. Therefore, there is time at the very beginning of the Autumn Term of Year 12, to discuss examination results with Heads of Departments and make a decision then.
