ASK THE Plant Doctor

Got a tricky plant question? Ask instore or try our online Plant Doctor at plantdoctor.co.nz

Hi Plant Doctor,

I have a large outside flowering rosemary plant. It's attracting a lot of bees and is starting to look a little sad. Please could you suggest any other plants that I can add to my garden to help feed the bees.

- Thanks, Alice

Hi Alice,

As well as rosemary, bees love lavender, cornflower, and borage. These are all coming into season so great timing. Remember to plant your garden with different species that will flower all year round.

Hello Plant Doc!

Every year my peaches have curly distorted leaves. What am I doing wrong?

- Thanks, Robert

Hi Robert,

Peaches can get a fungal disease, commonly called Peach Leaf Curl. This can also affect other deciduous stone fruit trees.

At this time of year, spray thoroughly with Grosafe Freeflo Copper from leaf bud swell, every 14 days until in full leaf. Once your peach loses its leaves next winter spray with Yates Lime Sulfur to help clean up any fungal spores hanging around.

SPRING PLANTS

We’re Loving

Spring is here and our garden centres are filled with vibrant colour, lush foliage and delicious edibles.

Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are classic shrubs renowned for their giant clusters of flowers in shades of white, pinks, purples and even blues. These striking plants thrive with minimal maintenance, just plant them in a spot with full to part shade and well-draining soil. We love the elegance that hydrangeas bring to your outdoor space.

Bring the scent of the tropics to your garden with Trachelospermum jasminoides, commonly known as Star Jasmine. This versatile jasmine can be grown up walls, pergolas, trailing along the ground, and even in containers. With delicate star-shaped blooms and glossy green foliage, it’s no wonder Star Jasmine is a favourite amongst gardeners.

Dianthus

Sweetly scented and dainty dianthus are the perfect addition to any flower garden. Available in a range of colours including white, pink, mauve and red, they are stunning as garden borders, and planted in pots or hanging baskets.

Star Jasmine

Basil

A must-have in any herb garden, basil is delicious in a variety of dishes. Basil elevates the flavour of tomatoes when grown together, and also helps keep pests at bay - the perfect companion plant.

Passionfruit

There’s nothing quite like the flavour of freshly ripened passionfruit picked straight from the vine. This tropical favourite is easy to grow, especially in Auckland’s subtropical climate. Plant passionfruit vines against a warm, north-facing wall in a raised garden bed, using a support structure to help them climb. Mulch well for bountiful harvests.

Tamarillo

Tamarillos, also known as tree tomatoes, bring tangy, tart flavours and bold, vibrant colours to your kitchen garden. These versatile fruits are delicious in both sweet and savoury dishes and can produce up to 20 kilograms of fruit each season - what’s not to love?

CULTIVATING THE BASICS Veggie Gardening

Enjoying fresh produce picked straight from your own garden is truly a unique experience. With the growing season now upon us, there's no better time to start your veggie garden journey!

Embarking on the journey of your very first veggie garden may feel a little daunting, but we’ve got all the tips and tricks to help you get started. Growing your own veggies benefits your mood, your mind, your health - and your wallet!

Position

Most veggies need full sun to keep them growing well. Choose a spot with ample room for their roots to spread and for plants to flourish. Crops like tomatoes, eggplants and capsicums grow well from spring to autumn, and the veggie seedlings available in our stores are always aligned with what will grow in the coming season.

Planting

When planting in the ground, first remove any weeds. Build on your existing soil by adding a good blend of Living Earth Organic Veggie Mix and Kings Compost. For an extra organic boost, mix in Kings Sheep Pellets or Kings Organic Vegetable Fertiliser.

When planting in large pots, use a bag of Living Earth Organic Veggie Mix. This mix contains all the beneficial nutrients and fertiliser needed to keep your potted veggies growing well.

For top-heavy crops like tomatoes or climbers like beans, we recommend adding stakes or supports at planting time. Providing support early sets your plants up for a successful growing season and prevents root damage while they establish.

Care

During the warmer months, water your veggie seedlings regularly. Each morning, water deeply at the base of the plants to avoid soggy leaves and potential diseases. Different crops have specific fertilising needs, so do your research and cater to their nutritional preferences. While liquid fertilisers are absorbed quickly by plants, they do require more work to disperse than slow-release options.

Gardening is a journey, and if your veggie seedlings aren’t growing as expected, consider it a learning opportunity. Your local Kings team is always ready to offer advice and guidance. Bring photos of your garden issues in-store, or email our Plant Doctor at plant.doctor@kings.co.nz

CLASSIC BEAUTY Loving Lavender

Popular with both pollinators and gardeners, lavender is a must-have in any Auckland garden. This stunning perennial has a delightful aroma, and will add elegance to your outdoor space.

Lavender is a favourite amongst gardeners for its easy-care and hardy nature. It is droughttolerant, making it well-suited for Auckland’s traditionally dry summers. Although lavender prefer drier conditions, they can still handle wetter climates.

There are many species of lavender, with different varieties falling under each species. The most common species found in our garden centres are Spanish lavender, English lavender, and French lavender.

Spanish lavender has distinctive bunny-ear flowers and follows the seasons more closely than the hardier English and French lavenders. English lavender is

light and sweetly scented, and is most commonly used for culinary purposes. French lavender has a softer scent, and is more often used for landscaping. While lavender usually blooms from spring through summer, some varieties of English and French lavender can provide year-round blooms in warmer climates.

Lavender is relatively easy to care for once established. Plant in a sunny spot with well-draining soil, give it a little seasonal prune and you will be rewarded with beautiful blooms for years to come. In late summer, we recommend removing fading flowers and trimming back to a third to keep your lavender growing well.

FROM BLOOM TO BEAUTY Roses

With their delicate blooms and lush foliage, roses can bring beauty and fragrance to your garden. Their resilient nature makes them an excellent choice for any gardener. There are so many gorgeous cultivars to choose from, and no matter which one, two or twenty you decide on, you’ll enjoy beautiful blooms for years to come.

Positioning

Roses grow well when planted in a sunny spot with well-draining soil, rich in organic matter. Good air circulation will help prevent common fungal issues, especially in the more humid summer months. The right spot can make all the difference, so if you notice your rose is struggling a little, a new home might be all it needs - just avoid relocating in spring and summer!

Planting

When growing roses, planting in the ground is preferable. This gives your roses plenty of space to spread their roots and grow into lush, beautiful plants. Dig a hole that is twice the size of the pot your rose came in, and add nutrients to the soil by mixing in Kings Compost and Kings Sheep Pellets before backfilling. If your soil is clay-based and on the heavier side, consider adding a handful of Claybreaker Gypsum to improve drainage.

After planting, give your rose the best start by watering in deeply and feeding with Kings Slow-Release Rose Food. Mulch with Living Earth More Than Mulch to help with water retention.

Care

Give your roses a deep watering once or twice a week in the warmer months, allowing the hose to run for about five minutes each time. Deep watering is critical as it ensures the water soaks all the way down to the roots. Avoid getting the leaves wet to help prevent fungal problems.

Throughout the year, maintain a layer of mulch around your roses to ensure effective moisture retention around the roots. Keep your roses looking neat and flowering abundantly by cutting back to a major leaf when deadheading. Pruning must be done when roses are dormant in winter, giving them a good trim to encourage healthy growth.

PASSIONATE PLANT PEOPLE

Meet Our Team

The team at Kings are plant people – passionate and enthusiastic about caring for plants. Get to know a few of our team, and the story of how their love for plants came about. With their expertise and love for plants, they’re here to help you grow well.

Tanu Garden Centre Management Team

My love for plants began in childhood back in India, nurtured by weekends spent in my family’s garden. Watching seeds grow into thriving plants fascinated me and planted the first seeds of my future career.

My first job in horticulture was working in greenhouses where we grew tomatoes and cucumbers, which led to me pursuing a diploma in horticulture. After completing my diploma, I joined the Kings Nursery team in 2019. Working in the nursery taught me how to grow plants from little tubes, grafting and budding, where I specialised in sustainable gardening techniques, learning about soil health and plant diseases.

I now work in the retail team and have taken on mentoring roles, guiding the next generation of horticulturists. As a plant doctor I love to share my knowledge when people visit with tricky plant questions. I am proud of the journey I’ve cultivated, and I remain dedicated to nurturing both plants and people for years to come.

Daniel Product Manager - Green Goods

Despite growing up on a plant nursery, I wasn’t really into plants until I started working at Auckland Zoo and the green genes began to reassert themselves. First in creating a carnivorous plant display for the Zoo’s Education department, and eventually shifting gears to work at Kings St Lukes in 2009. I’ve worked in many roles over the last 15 years, from checkout operator to store manager, and eventually into my current role as plant sourcer and buyer for the company as a whole.

The connections I made over the years have served me well in a succession of horticultural enthusiasms, from creating an edible garden orchard with over 100 varieties of fruit, to building a houseplant collection that filled multiple rooms in my home. I work with growers to bring new plants to the NZ retail market, from rare houseplants and subtropical fruits to new colours and varieties of perennial flowers!

I’m always on the lookout for new and exciting varieties that we can offer our customers, and my goal is always to ensure that Kings can offer the best range of plants for all types of gardeners.

YOUR KITCHEN GARDEN Tomatoes

Whether

you're a beginner or a seasoned gardener, tomatoes are an

excellent option for growing at home. They offer abundant rewards with only a small amount of love and care needed.

Seeds

Growing from seed offers a wider range of tomato varieties than other methods, though it requires more patience and nurturing. Tomato seeds can be sown from mid to late August in Auckland, and can be transplanted into the garden or pots once they have two to three pairs of leaves, and the risk of frost is over.

Seedlings

Our range of tomato seedlings is perfect if you’re looking for a quicker start. The punnets have individual pockets to avoid any tangled roots - just pop them into your soil, and they’re good to go!

Established Plants

If you want a headstart, or you’re playing catch-up, our mature plants are available from midSeptember. These plants get established quickly, and produce bountiful harvests.

Want more fruit? Grafted tomatoes grow larger than standard varieties and have the capacity to hold much more fruit.

Position

Tomatoes grow well in a sunny position with good airflow. Choose a spot with at least six hours of full sun each day, and avoid planting where tomatoes, potatoes, or eggplants grew the previous year to prevent soil-borne diseases.

Planting

When growing in pots, plant with Kings Container Mix. This mix contains water storage crystals for improved moisture retention, as well as slow-release fertiliser to feed your plants. To ensure healthy root development, choose a pot with plenty of space - we recommend at least 40L for a mature plant.

When planting directly in the garden, leave at least a metre between plants and enrich your soil by digging in Kings Compost. Dig a hole twice as deep and wide as the pot your plant came in, adding Kings Organic Vegetable Fertiliser or Kings Sheep Pellets, along with a blend of Kings Compost and topsoil. Firm the soil, and water deeply.

Using a greenhouse is another option for planting. Greenhouses offer protection from insects and frost. Ensure proper ventilation to prevent fungal diseases, and rotate crops annually or replace the top 50cm of soil with either Kings Container Mix or Kings Garden Mix.

Tomato vines can become top-heavy, so they should be staked, supported by string, or tied to a trellis.

Care

Tomatoes love their food! Once established, feed with Kings Liquid Tomato Food every two weeks. Keep your tomatoes growing well with regular deep waterings around the roots, avoiding the foliage to prevent leaf burn and fungal diseases.

Channel all energy into fruit and flower production by removing any side shoots or lateral branches. These are found sprouting at any angle between the main stem and an already-formed branch.

Tomatoes are ready for picking once they have fully ripened on the vine and turned red, orange, or yellow, depending on the variety. Harvest green tomatoes slightly earlier when they show a hint of colour at the base of the fruit. Leave a small stalk on the fruit and pop them in a sunny spot to ripen.

Our Top Varieties

Tomatoes come in a range of different colours, sizes, tastes and culinary uses. Here are our top picks for this spring:

Beefsteak

Named for its large, fleshy fruit, the beefsteak tomato is ideal for sandwiches and burgers.

Roma

These non-acidic tomatoes are great in soups and pastes. Fruit ripens all at once, rather than throughout the season.

Sweet 100

Sweet 100 are small, sweet cherry tomatoes that fruit abundantly from late spring through late autumn.

Grosse Lisse

Grosse Lisse is a popular, heavy-yielding variety of tomato with large, robust fruit.

Kings Liquid Tomato Food

Great for chillies, capsicum, eggplant, and other fruiting veggies. Liquid feed once every two to four weeks.

Kings Container Mix

Great for using on trees, shrubs, containers, hanging baskets, and any edibles that prefer moist soil.

Money Maker

A classic medium-sized tomato with juicy fruit, this prolific cropper has excellent disease resistance.

Charm

Charm is a prolific producer of medium, juicy fruit. Perfect for growing in both pots and raised garden beds.

Kings Sheep Pellets

A great organic fertiliser for all plants, trees and shrubs, helping to improve soil structure.

THE

JOURNEY

TO Growing Organic

Embracing organic gardening practices allows you to cultivate a healthy ecosystem right in your own backyard. Growing organically is a truly rewarding experience, giving you the peace of mind that comes from knowing exactly what goes into and onto your food.

Soil

The best place to start your organic gardening journey is with the soil! Focus on enriching your soil with organic matter such as Kings Compost and Kings Sheep Pellets. A teaspoon of healthy garden soil can be home to a billion beneficial bacteria, thousands of protozoa, and endless fungal strands.

There are many benefits to having a dynamic ecosystem in your garden, from improved plant nutrition and increased moisture retention, to resilience against pests and diseases. Practice crop rotation and companion planting to maintain soil health and reduce pests. Natural pest control, such as introducing beneficial insects

and using organic sprays, helps keep your garden thriving without using chemicals.

Composting

Creating your own compost is a great way to use kitchen and garden scraps, turning them into valuable organic matter for your garden. Choose a sunny spot for your compost bin or pile, layering green materials like veggie scraps and grass clippings with brown materials such as leaves and paper. To speed up the decomposition process, turn your compost regularly to aerate it. In a few months, you’ll have compost ready to enrich your garden beds! If you’re short on space, try a bokashi bin under your sink.

Worm Farms

Worm farms are not only great for organic gardening, but they are also lots of fun to work on with the kids. Choose a worm farm kit from your local Kings, and place in a cool, shady area with a bedding layer. Feed with small amounts of kitchen scraps like veggie peels and coffee grounds. As the waste is processed by the worms, worm castings and worm tea are created. Before adding to your garden, dilute the worm tea with water at a ratio of about 1:10 and apply to your plants' soil or as a

foliar spray. Lightly fork in the vermicast solids while preparing your garden beds for another nutrient-packed boost. Worm castings and worm tea are highly beneficial for plant growth and enhancing the soil.

Kings Top Tip

Organic fertilisers not only feed the plant but also build up the soil biota, which improves nutrient availability going forward and helps the plants become self-supporting over the long term.

CREATING A CAPTIVATING DISPLAY Summer Bulbs

When it comes to gardening, there are few things that rival the captivating beauty of bulbs bursting through the soil. After lying dormant for months, they emerge with a spectacular display of blooms.

Planting

Depending on the variety, summer bulbs should be planted in spring or autumn. Keep an eye out for when they are available in stores, as that’s your sign to get planting. Plant summer bulbs in a full sun position with at least six hours of sunlight each day. If you are planting for cut flowers, plant in a shadier spot, as the reduced sunlight encourages longer stems, making them ideal for cut flower arrangements.

When planting in the garden, consider planting into raised beds for improved drainage. Alternatively, if planting in a

particularly wet spot, plant in a slight mound. Fork the soil and add Gypsum ClayBreaker and Kings Potting Mix if needed.

When planting in pots, be sure to choose one with enough space for the bulbs to grow. Opt for well-draining mix without water storage crystals such as Kings Potting Mix.

Care

After planting, give your bulbs a deep watering, and continue watering regularly until they start sprouting. During the drier months of summer, regular watering is essential. Potted bulbs will need

watering daily. Just be sure the pots aren’t sitting in water, as this could cause the bulbs to rot.

To boost flower development, side-dress your bulbs with Kings Bulb Food every three months, avoiding direct contact between the food and the bulbs. To promote strong and healthy root systems, apply Aquaticus Organic Garden Booster monthly.

Keep sap-sucking insects like thrips and aphids under control with Aquaticus Bugtrol. These pests are more prevalent during the drier weather.

Our Top Summer Bulbs

We have a stunning range of summer bulbs in store this spring, with so many beautiful colours and styles to choose from.

SPRING SECRETS FOR Happy Houseplants

Spring is here, bringing new growth and energy for our indoor plants. As the growing season begins, it’s time to change up your routine for indoor plants. Some plants may even need a new home!

Spring brings longer days and warmer weather, and with the growing season in full swing, you’ll notice new growth on your indoor plants. Warmer weather means indoor plants need more care than during the cooler seasons, and we’ve got all the tips and tricks to keep you growing well.

Position

Ensure your indoor plants are in a spot with bright, indirect sunlight so they can enjoy the sunshine without getting burnt! Different species have different light preferences. Some plants thrive in low light, while others need more sun, so research needs before finding them a home.

Watering

In the warmer weather, your indoor plants will need a bit more watering. Check the moisture levels in the soil with a moisture meter, or simply stick your finger into the soil to see if it’s damp. When the soil feels slightly dry, it’s time to give them a drink. Just remember to avoid overwatering - they don’t like soggy roots!

Fertilising

Spring is here, and regular fertilising can now resume. Every four to six weeks, use a liquid fertiliser such as Kings House Plant Liquid Food to give your indoor plants a quick nutrients boost. For a slow-release option, apply Kings Slow-Release House Plant Food once in spring, and again in summer.

Repotting

After a few years of growing, your indoor plant may need a new home. Check for roots peeking through drainage holes, slow growth or soil drying out more quickly after watering, as these are all signs that your plant may need repotting. Keep in mind, newly bought plants usually don’t need repotting right away. Some indoor plants like moth orchids, peace lillies and anthuriums prefer being cozy in their pots, so don’t rush into upsizing!

When repotting, choose a new pot that is up to 5cm larger than the current one. Add a layer of Kings House Plant Mix at the bottom for the roots to grow into. Gently

squeeze the sides of the original pot to loosen the soil. Turn the pot upside down, securing the soil with one hand, and carefully pull the pot away. For rootbound plants, a quick flush of water will help loosen up the roots. Place your plant in its new pot, ensuring there is 3 to 4cm of space between the top lip of the pot and the soil level. Carefully fill the space around your plant with new mix, covering the roots but not burying the stem below its original level. Give your plant a deep watering to help it settle into its new home, and wait for a month before feeding with Kings House Plant Liquid Food.
