Those years of togetherness, they have now passed. They came happily but were gone quickly. Now we must part to seek our own happiness and success. The road is long and narrow; it has many stops along the way. These are our challenges, our chances to choose between right and wrong, good and evil. But as we leave, we shall take all memories with us. W e shall never forget each other, to call for when we’re most needed. Because we’ll still have each other, Please don’t ever shut the door.

LANI DAVISON I won’t ask of myself to be something else; I ’ll just be me . . . .

ANNELIES de KOSTER

Love the gold of heaven the blue of hell the sun of day the tomb of night — the golden sun anchoring my spinning heart while a blue tomb lurks icily in the dark.

LAURA FO X Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower; W e will grieve not, rather find Strength in what remains behind . . . .

Sam Bass was born in Indiana, it was his native home, and at the age of seventeen young Sam began to roam, Sam first came out to Texas a convov for to be . . . . J

He loved the sun descending and bird songs in pine trees and rich summers, with the roughness of the sea . . . . Sam sold out in Custer City and then got on a spree — A harder set of convoys you seldom ever see.

CIND Y HANCOCK The Road goes ever on and on, Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the road has gone And I must follow if I can Pursuing it with eager feet, Until it meets some larger way where other Paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say.

DEE HOOVER So many lives, so many faces, here am I. Shall I ever be real to you?

But as often is the case with happiness, lost all notion of time, living outside of myself, sharing something, I don’t know what, with light, trees, and with the sweetness of the air. It was one of those moments when a man can still feel almost a part of nature.

AMANDA RIED "W hat are moon letters?’’ asked the hobbit full of excite ment. "Moon letters are rune letters, but you cannot see them,” said Elrond, "not when you look straight at them. They can only be seen when the moon shines behind them, and what is more, with the cunning sort it must be a moon of the same shape and season as the day when they were written. The dwarves invented them and wrote them with silver pens.”

A Thought At Christmas W e speak of Christmas, of beauty, of friendship, of glad tidings, of birth, of merriment, of closeness among men, of joy, of joy — Let us ask, Does it take Christmas to make it so?” W hat of Halloween? W e were very close then. It is joy to be close. Have you seen the sky behind the school building on the way back from hockey games? Beauty brings joy. The Holding book, the casseroles, a "good morning Mrs. — ” from all the way across the field, a honk of the horn in traffic downtown and a hurried wave back before the student s car guns out of sight — books and casseroles, honks, waves bring joy. The sound from the mixed voices of the first coed singing group made goose bumps come and the room smelled of pizza. It was joyous. And the angel said, "I bring you good news of a great joy for to you is born— and, at last, Adrian is born! W e were very close then. Out the window the lower school plays green light without any coats on — it’s cold. Before it was coldj they climbed the apple tree and ate apples. They were joyful. A mural, a national merit award and "I don’t believe it, I got in” — clapping and hugging and tears are joyous. Every morning to see a car being parked, every morning without fail; to overhear a fifth-period baby sitter say, "Oh, I can’t take any money, we’re all doing it” — these are joyous moments. The night the play was given there was an actress waiting in the faculty room wrapped in a sheet. "W h at are you doing in here?” "I’m a prostitute and I’m cold.” Humor abounds and it is joyful. Annelies had an assembly — we were very close then. It is joy to be close. Formafilm is dripping, 'Sweet Baby Jam es’ is playing, King school boys are milling, the eggs are hatching, the mice are smelling! The spirit can be joyous. W e speak of Christmas, of joy, of joy. W e are very close now — Let us ask, "W ill it take Christmas to keep it so?”

Outward Bound" is an organization which provides a very special service to youth. As the advertising agency who has volunteered to tell that story, we call it "schools of the possible." In researching for our Outward Bound ads...we came across this letter from a 16-

year-old boy to his family, written while he was experiencing the Outward Bound program. deGarmo, Inc. 605 Third Avenue, New York 10016

July 13

Dear Mom & Dad & Cath & Anyone else— I want to write and say 1000 times “I love you!” but that would be redundant. The fact is that life for me now, with nothing to do during my solo has been very reflective. It is as tho everyone I know has died, and I am kicking myself for the way I treated them, yet at the end of this longest of 26 days, they will come to life again. ;

Mom, I keep seeing your reassuring face looking in the bus window, and altho I asked you not to make trouble, I’m awfully glad you were there. That was my last contact with you, and so stays in my mind indelibly. Dad, here nobody reprimands you, or nudges you along the right line. Altho I had grown to hate that at home, nevertheless, I wish I had it here. I don’t think I want all the responsibility for my own life or death yet. So if I get rebellious at home, please hang tough because I realize that I need yon greatly. Even at your harshest, you are not as harsh as these elements I have to confront now. The wind, rain and cold I have no love for, and their punishment of me is uncalled for, as far as I know, but hitting the rain does no good, nor does kicking the wind. As for cold I have no defense, for here on my solo I was not able to start a fire with the six allotted matches, so with 48 hours or so to go, I have no fire. I wish I was with you all, for you’d probably say, “that’s all right Jack, don’t let it worry yon.” But the wind just laughs in my face and brings on the cold as if to say, “You failed, now it’s my turn.” And I have no one, nothing to turn to. I need you all, and I realize it now probably more than I have ever before. I doubt also that I will have Cathy from now on, for I realize the value of having someone you can trust and depend on. Here, the fact that she gets such good grades, has been a constant source of pride to me, when I’m asked about my family...

" I want to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life . . . to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms and if it be proved mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of i t . . . or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it. Thoreau BUBU and HEIDI
