TURN

The Class of 1983 is pleased to announce that our yearbook is dedicated to Robert Cook. Among other gifts, he has given us the ability to see everything, including ourselves, in myriad different ways. As a tribute to this aspect that we admire so much in him, we composed a poem and borrowed the theme from W allace Steven's "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird," one of his favorite poems. Here is our version, entitled, "Thirteen Ways of Looking at Mr. C o o k."

1. He is a teacher of symbols and culture Working to have us question the world Helping us to find our own truth Teaching us the beauty of independent thought 2. A sense of self Felt through patient listening And well thought out advice 3. Towering above the Lower School band Are heard the sounds of a lone, brave trombone 4. Doonesbury, George Carlin, dulcimer, and Impromptu remarks 5. When the time came To take on two new responsibilities, Wasn't he perfectly ready, willing, and able? (Well, he managed splendidly, just the same.) 6. Well? . . . 7. Prodding our 20th century television infested minds. He inspires us to reach beyond our prescribed bounds To greater heights 8. Voicing his opinions For what he believes 9. Lathe of wood, Lathe of the mind 10. When won't he impart Some bit of philosophic thought On anyone who'll listen and argue? 11. A slightly southern voice Full of hope, criticism, and twang 12. Marching to the tune of a different drummer 13. He is a friend, a strong support His hand and heart are open If we need a boost through his smile Or a jolt through his wisdom.

With love and affection, The Class of 1983

From this mind, Show to all, The erosive, compulsive and array of brilliant light flashes which dance until grande finale within it.

Dana Elizabeth Baker

Life is like the seasons, After winter comes the spring. So I'll keep this smile awhile and See what tomorrow brings. — "C ycles" — Don't question why she needs to be so free. She'll tell you it's the only way to be She just can't be chained to a life Where nothing's gained and nothing's lost At such a cost. — Stones —

So many people have come and gone The faces fade as the years go by; I still recall as I wander on As clear as the sun in the summer sky. — Boston — They said I would shine like a light in the city, I'd hoped it would be like the moon on the sea. — Jonathan Edwards

Too many hands on my time Too many feelings Too many things on my mind When I leave, I don't know What I'm hoping to find When I leave, I don't know What I'm leaving behind . I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life. ยง F. Scott Fitzgerald

When things go wrong, as they sometimes w ill, When the road you're trudging seems all up hill, When funds are low and debts are high, And you want to smile but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must but don't you quit.

Looking For Space by John Denver On the road of experience I'm trying to find my own way Sometimes I wish that I could fly away When I think that I'm moving Suddenly things stand still I'm afraid 'cause I think they always will And I'm looking for space And to find out who I am And I'm looking to know and understand It's a sweet sweet dream Sometimes I'm almost there Sometimes I fly like an eagle and Sometimes I'm deep in despair All alone in the universe Sometimes that's how it seems I get lost in the sadness and the screams Then I look to the center Suddenly everything's clear I find myself in the sunshine and my dreams And I'm looking for space And to find out who I am And I'm looking to know and understand It's a sweet sweet dream Sometimes I'm almost there Sometimes I fly like an eagle and Sometimes I'm deep in despair On the road of experience Join in the living day If there's an answer It's just that it's just that way When you're looking for space And to find out who you are When you're looking to try and reach the stars It's a sweet sweet dream Sometimes I'm almost there Sometimes I fly like an eagle and Sometimes I'm deep in despair Sometimes I fly like an eagle Like an eagle I go flying high

To the Class of '83. Always remember the positive side of life, the friendship and rewards you have made and accomplished through your years at L .H .T . Have courage to stand for what you know is right! We especially remember you, Anne. It has been wonderful to have a seventeen year old daughter without having to wait seventeen years! You have brought a new dimension into our lives and we wish you all the very best when you return to Norway. Live life to the full . . . " . . . all experience is an arch wherethro' Gleams that untravell'd world, whose margin fades For ever and for ever when I move. For how dull it is to pause, to make an end, To rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use!" "U lysses" by Tennyson With love, Ken, Joanna, Fiona, and Clare Nichols. Jan, Ingunn, Lasse, og Vemund

The trick to it is staying on course when life isn't a breeze
