Kingston Heritage – The cost of repairing all the potholes created by a brutal winter season could be in the seven-figure range. City officials unveiled the staggering price tag in response to mounting complaints from motorists, and to warn councillors what impact potholes will have on the municipal budget. “We are probably looking at over $1 million,” explained Jim Keech, president of Utilities Kingston, who also oversees the public works department. That’s about five times what the city normally budgets to smooth Kingston streets every year. A late winter snow melt unveiled the extent of damage done to the city’s road network. Hardly a road is untouched by potholes or continuous rows of damaged pavement, known as “alligator” ruts. “The road work will be extensive and expensive,” agreed Coun. Sandy Berg. The environment, infrastructure and transportation committee recently heard a first-hand briefing of the pothole problem, and was told that a detailed cost report will be coming to council in April. City crews have tried to get an early jump on some of the craters by shoveling ‘cold patch’ asphalt into them, but they won’t be ready to launch a full assault on the problem until the spring thaw takes hold, likely in late April. Until then, Utilities Kingston, public works and engineering departments are working on a game plan that will involve stocking up on asphalt and hiring contractors to augment municipal resources, subject to council’s approval. Mayor Mark Gerretsen doesn’t seem overly concerned with the extra resources that staff are expected to ask of budget-cautious councillors this spring. “We’ll get through it,” he remarked, noting there are reserve funds to help address the problem. The extreme pothole season was created by sudden temperature swings – from freezing cold to rain – allowing melted snow to seep into small cracks and then expand when the temperature freezes again, causing the cracks to grow bigger and eventually crumble in certain sections. While newly-paved roads have been able to weather the winter, many older roads went from bad to worse. As for making a pothole claim against the municipality, such as for the cost of repairing a damaged vehicle, you may be hardpressed to prove negligence to get any compensation. The Ontario Municipal Act sets out the specific rules for cities to avoid such claims. The provincial standard requires the city to fix an eight-centimetre or deeper pothole on a paved roadway within a period that ranges from four to 30 days. The repair timeframe is determined by the amount and speed of traffic on a street. Generally, the busier the street, the faster the pothole must be fixed. But even if motorists are aware of a problem street, that doesn’t mean the city knows about it too. “The city’s obligation to fix a pothole is triggered only after the municipality becomes aware of the problem,” according to a recent statement from the city. Motorists are encouraged to report potholes by calling 613546-0000. The city’s legal department will determine whether minimal maintenance standards were met in the event of damage claims.

Council delays vote on referendum motion that could scrap Kingston districts By Bill Hutchins Reporter
Kingston Heritage – City councillors say they want more clarity on the wording of the at-large governance question before they decide whether to make it an election issue. Backed by a 550-name petition, Coun. Kevin George introduced a motion March 4 to add a referendum question to the October 2014 election ballot. It would ask voters if they support elections-at-large instead of the current system of district representation. The question currently reads: “I support elections at large - Yes or No.” But Coun. George decided to withdraw his referendum motion in order to add more “clarity” to the question that could face voters with help from the clerk’s office. Council is expected to vote on the revised motion April 1. “It needs to be written out by non-biased parties,” agreed Mayor Mark Gerretsen. But even a revised question offers no guarantee of political support. Several councillors have already hinted they will vote against the referendum no matter what the wording says because they don’t believe the 12-district system is broken. “I still don’t understand how there’s better representation,” said Coun. Lisa Osanic. A delegation including for former Mayors Isabel Turner, Gary Bennett, former councillor Joe Hawkins, former broadcaster and council-candidate Mark Potter plus spokesperson Jackie St. Pierre urged council to let the people decide. “Elections at large make each councillor accountable to every resident,” St. Pierre told council during a five minute presentation. As a long-serving reeve in the former Kingston Township where at large voting was the norm, Turner lauded the city-wide election system because it allows a diverse group of candidates to represent the entire community. She also criticized the current district system, pointing to recent$14.37-$17.10 complaints from residents 50% OFF

in the north and east districts who feel neglected by city hall. “We’re not making this a whole democratic city. There’s an impression – rightly or wrongly,” said Turner, who served as mayor from 2000 to 2003. But the delegation was challenged to provide proof the at large system of governance – where the top 12 candidates, plus the mayor, would be elected based on the total number of city-wide votes - will fix more municipal woes. Councillors wanted examples of previous council decisions that could’ve been better had the group been elected at large, or to show evidence that district councillors don’t have a city-wide perspective. The group’s main assertion is that voters never had the chance to decide a governance model during amalgamation 15 years ago, and now is the time to allow that. “This decision should be made outside this chamber,” said Bennett, who served as mayor from 1994 to 2000. Former councils have grappled with the best form of representation, and in 1999 it was decided the system of electing one councillor from each of the 12 geographical districts was the best model. This is also the second time in five years that the group advocating elections at large has lobbied for changes. However, at large opponents say running a citywide election can be too costly for some candidates and there’s no proof it will result in more effective representation. Coun. Osanic says she intends to vote against the referendum idea based on feedback from her constituents. “They want a district councillor. They want to know who they can go to with their problems. They don’t want to navigate city hall and say “of these 12 councillors which one can I go to?’” The City of Oshawa is holding a referendum to decide whether to scrap its at large system and return to district representation, she added. Council has until the end of April to decide a referendum question in order for it to be placed on this fall’s ballot. Even if the question proceeds to voters, the referendum results are not binding on the next council. $14.36

Kidney disease awareness day and month hopes to educate and inform Canadians mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Heritage News – Did you know that one in 10 Canadians will be affected by or will be diagnosed with kidney disease this year? That number increases with age and 50 per cent of people that are 75 years of age or older have been or will be impacted by kidney disease. These stats come from the Canadian Kidney Foundation and if you weren’t aware of the significance of kidney disease before, they want to make you aware of it now. “The month of March is Kidney Awareness Month and the idea is just to make Canadians more aware of kidney disease and the risk factors associated with it,” explained Bruce Hill, Manager of the Ottawa Kidney Foundation office. “We also held World Kidney Day on March 13 and on that day, basically any organization that is associated with kidney disease tries to go out on a limb to raise more awareness. We really want Canadians to think about the risk factors associated with kidney disease and what they
can do to minimize those risks.” The two biggest drivers of kidney disease are diabetes and vascular diseases like high blood pressure. Both of these conditions can be treated and often the treatment for both will also help prevent kidney disease. The hardest part is making people aware of the problems. “In terms of preventative measures, the biggest issue is diet,” added Hill. “It is about taking control of your life and focusing on preventing this disease. Eating more fruits and vegetables and reducing sodium are things that should be done already, but if they aren’t then making that change can really help. Those at risk should also be reducing their alcohol intake and of course not smoking, all of the things that go along with a healthy lifestyle already. Another big driver for kidney disease is obesity and that isn’t surprising because those people are also more likely to develop diabetes at some point in their lifetime.” The Kidney Foundation runs multiple awareness campaigns throughout the month of March and
Staff at the Kidney Foundation offices kicked off Kidney Awareness Day (March 13) by drinking a glass of water together. throughout the year to raise awareness. They focus on sharing information at malls, on the radio and often times they visit community centres to do preventative screen-

We do a kind of screening for kidney disease and then we inform people if they are at risk. a family history of kidney stones, and some research shows that if you had strep throat as a child you may also be at risk. Hill encourages people to keep a watchful eye on their kidney function and simply enquire with their doctor. “Why take chances? When you get older and you go in for a physical it is just another box that needs to be checked on blood work and it is simple to add that to the list each year.” Those that do experience kidney failure have two options – dialysis or transplantation. Neither option is a cure for the disease and Hill emphasizes that neither option is particularly convenient either. “Dialysis is extremely inconvenient with treatments being three or four days a week for four hour sessions for the rest of your life. Even with transplants, they can last anywhere from two years to 25 years, but there is no guarantee. It is a really tough disease to deal with and dialysis makes it really hard to travel and live a normal life. It really consumes your entire life.” Spreading the word about kidney disease is really the most important part, added Hill. The Kidney Foundation is always looking for volunteers to help at screening events or participate in awareness fairs. “We really just need help educating people about kidney disease and the more volunteers we have the farther we can reach.” For more information about kidney disease and what you can do to help raise awareness go to www. kidney.ca/risk
Life in the snow lane: City launches review of winter control service, staffing levels Reporter
Celebrating St. Patrick in Kingston
R0012601433
Kingston Heritage – On the heels of the worst winter season in 20 years, the City of Kingston is taking a closer look at its ability to meet its own snow clearing standards. Councillors are launching an in-depth review of winter control services to determine if equipment and staffing levels are adequate to meet population growth. It’s the first top-to-bottom review of snow clearing since 2008. “The city has grown,” said Coun. Rob Hutchison, who introduced the service review motion March 4. “We essentially have the same amount of resources to do more work.” He’s concerned that council’s push to maintain a low tax rate may have left the public works department short-changed and unable to cope with prolonged severe weather. “That has taken a lot of flexibility out of our budget.” Coun. Rick Downes says he was surprised to learn at the recent town hall meetings that Kingston has 1,900 kilometres of road lanes and 500 kilometres of sidewalks – a job that continues to increase with every new subdivision that’s added to the municipal routes. “We need to look at this from a service and equipment level.” It’s estimated that Kingston adds five kilometres of new road lanes every year, which means more plowing and sanding requirements. But it’s not just population growth that’s adding pressure to meet the city’s winter control standards. The review will also examine the city’s fleet of plows and other vehicles to determine if more equipment and drivers are needed. “It’s a concern of citizens. We need to know what the service level is and what it ought to be,” explained
Coun. Hutchison. Coun. Jim Neill is also concerned with the state of the fleet, noting damaged vehicles or those left in the repair shop for extended periods could hamper the city’s ability to move swiftly to tackle significant snowfalls. “There have been equipment issues this winter.” Council voted unanimously to undertake the service review. The winter that brought an ice storm, above-average snowfall, freezing rain and bitter cold snaps has been compounded by the early arrival of potholes, leading to several complaints about extremely poor road conditions. City officials say crews have been working nonstop to address winter and its aftermath. Mayor Mark Gerretsen has urged patience with the potholes. “All that we really ask is that the public just exercise some patience and realize that there’s a big job ahead of our public works department.” The problem of severe potholes - and how much extra it will cost to fill them - will be the subject of a separate report to council in the coming weeks. During the last winter service overhaul in 2008, city officials determined that sidewalk and bus shelter snow clearing was inadequate and needed to be given a higher priority. The current review will look at other services Kingston’s St. Patrick’s Day parade that could be improved, such as snowbank removal. took place March 8, proceeding to City officials have less than a year to complete their City Hall after a wreath laying cerinvestigation, and determine the associated funding Park. that’s needed to meet winter control or- emony at McBurney tour. inAn Harman Anystandards, y time. Never ePhoto/John der for the outcome to be discussed at the 2015 budget pire! x talks. Damon Wells, director of the public works department, says the hardest part of the review will be to determine the resources needed to deal with an “average” winter. “We look at what the equipment needs are. And for that we would be looking at capital dollars, but we also have to look at the manpower requirement to operate that equipment and that relates to our operating dollars.”

Seedy Saturday emphasizes the importance of growing local and protecting bees By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
the event has seen an increase in both vendors and attendees each year. “More and more people come out and we keep making it happen and that is really great to see,” said Patty Spencer of Seeds Grow Food, one of the sponsors for the event. “It is an association of many different people and organizations and we all contribute in whatever way we can. Today we spoke to about 100 to 120 different people and its great because we are all so passionate about growing locally and harvesting this community and it is wonderful to see so many people that care about this cause.” R0012592377
Heritage News – This spring, when the bees return and start buzzing around, think twice before you swat them away or attempt to kill them. Bee populations have declined drastically over the past decade and while some who are allergic or find them a bit pesky may be relieved, farmers and food growers are extremely concerned. “Bees are really at risk. Last year 28 per cent of Canada’s hives did not survive the winter and that is a huge problem,” explained Grey Hounsell of
Seldom Fools Apiculture. “The main problem here is pesticides that are being used and killing off the bees. Without bees there is no pollination and without pollination there are no crops. It is a serious issue for farmers.” These issues and concerns were discussed in Hounsell’s recent lecture during Seedy Saturday on March 8 at the Kingston Unitarian Fellowship Hall. Hounsell spoke about the importance of bees as pollinators and joined many other vendors who came out to promote local gardening and network with other like-minded growers. This year marked the sixth year for Seedy Saturday and

The main goal for Spencer and Seeds Grow Food is to promote genetic diversity in the plant life in Kingston and really focus on plants that can survive the climate and weather conditions of the area. The group is also focused on working with farmers to provide local seeds to people who want to grow their own crops. “Our main goal is to get seeds back into the life cycle. A lot of people are accustomed to growing seeds that are commercially produced. They get them at Canadian Tire or out of a catalogue and they don’t come from the Kingston region. We really encourage people to be food sovereign and food independent from these commercial sellers. We need to have our own grass roots organization and kind of a free alliance of people that are doing that,” added Spencer. Hounsell and his partner at Seldom Fools, Gord Campbell, are also focused on keeping products local and above all natural. The pair started their hives in 2008 and although they have had many people tell them they can’t keep their hives alive without chemicals, they’ve persevered and are now more successful than ever. “I always tell people that we are trying to save the world one bee at a time,” explained Campbell. “We were always told that we couldn’t
Greg Hounsell (left) and Gord Campbell from Seldom Fools Apiculture educated people on the importance of bees at Seedy Saturday. Photo/Mandy Marciniak do it without chemicals but here we are six years later and our hives are thriving. Other people tell us ‘wait until next year and then you’ll see problems’, but so far nothing has happened. Our hives are alive and well and chemical free.” For Campbell and Hounsell, it isn’t even about the honey production or the wax, it’s about the bees and learning more and more about them. They both strive to educate people about bees’ importance and they want more people to pay attention to the bees and more importantly, the lack of bees.
“We really took to it and it is just fascinating to watch and be a part of. You can also very quickly see the impact that the hives have on the whole environment around them. Suddenly, with these two hives around, we had tons of raspberries popping up and the dogwoods were covered in berries and it was truly amazing to see how quickly it all changed. Bees are really important to our environment and we really just want people to be aware of that.” For more information on Seldom Fools and their bees visit www.sfapiculture.ca

BREAK the stigma. JOIN the conversation. Let’s talk about something that is impacting our future: depression in youth.
Coun. Rick Downes wondered why Utilities Kingston doesn’t launch a marketing campaign to promote the theme that local tap water is better than bottled water. Keech says they have thought about a campaign, but says it’s not something they will pursue at this time. Instead he says the annual compliance report, which must be presented to the city and the Ontario government, speaks for itself, as did previous reports that also stated the treated water meets or exceeds provincial regulations. Utilities Kingston is already planning for the city’s future water needs. A construction crane towers over the Point Pleasant water plant on Sunny Acres Road, which is currently in the midst of a $72 million expansion to ensure there’s enough future capacity in the west end. The expansion work is scheduled to finish in 2016. Ratepayers will have to foot the bill since neither the provincial nor federal government has provided any funding for the upgrades.
Kingston Heritage - It’s time to raise a glass and toast Kingston’s water supply. The city has, once again, received a clean bill of health in its annual water compliance testing. “We have 100 per cent confidence in it,” declared Jim Keech, president of Utilities Kingston. It’s a simple statement but one that Keech couldn’t be more proud to make considering all of the strict regulations that municipalities face in the wake of the Walkerton water disaster. Kingston currently treats about 27 million cubic metres of water every year, and must have lab testing done on over 2,000 water samples throughout the year. “There were no incidents of noncompliance during this reporting period,” Keech explained. Utilities Kingston, which is owned by the city, operates two plants on the shores of Lake Ontario: The King Street Water Treatment Plant and Point Pleasant Water Treatment Plant in the west end. Both facilities provide about 72,000 cubic metres of treated water every day to the city’s 124,000 thirsty residents. If those numbers are broken down further, the average 315 Bagot St. Kingston Kingstonian uses 586 litres of water (Corner of Bagot & Queen) per day, which is well above the Canadian average of 300 to 400 litres a day per person. R0011949064 The tap water usage includes drinking, bathing, laundry, plus other seasonal activities such as washing COACH & TOURS the car or watering the lawn. The 2013 compliance report, presented to council March 4, gave Keech a chance to trumpet the good quality that comes out of Kingston’s Blue Jays vs Yankees - Saturday, April 5/14 taps. In Our Opinion
Crisis? What Crisis? Oh yeah‌
A book to change Canada Mandy Marciniak Reporter mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Heritage editorial - Technology has changed the way I interact with many things. I watch TV online or on Netflix instead of through cable, I listen to music digitally through iTunes instead of on CDs, I read books on my kindle or iPad instead of in paper form and now I listen to the radio through podcasts. I recently discovered podcasts and I have to say that I really love them. I love that they are commercial free, I love that there are millions of different ones to choose from and I love that they are free to download. I listen to a variety of podcasts including different book discussions and some more newsy podcasts, but my favorite by far is Q with Jian Ghomeshi. The podcast is a recorded version of the show that runs every weekday morning on CBC Radio; it focuses on the latest in arts and culture. Jian interviews musicians, artists, actors, activists and he often runs news panels too. The show is always very informative and I must admit I have a little crush on Jian. I find his interviews thoughtful, insightful and extremely well done. I
aspire to be as talented as he is in terms of interviewing. I listen to interviews with people I have never heard of and on issues I never knew about and I end up loving them. Jian also hosts a yearly book competition called Canada Reads. While I knew about this competition before, I never really paid much attention to it until this year. It originated in 2002 and each year a panel from CBC selects Canadian books that coincide with a certain theme. As the list narrows down to a top five, different Canadian celebrities who have been chosen to participate choose a novel to defend. Then, over the course of a week, the panel of defenders gathers to debate about their novels and each day they take a vote on who should be eliminated. In the end, one book comes out on top, but really the week is about celebrating Canadian literature. It is kind of a reality/game show about books and therefore it is extremely appealing to me. This year, the theme was ‘A Novel to Change Canada’ and the top five titles focused on issues that are prevalent in Canadian culture right now. Topics like global warming, gender identity, racism, discrimination against immigrants and issues with reconciliation amongst aboriginals were brought to the table and
over the course of four days, heated debates occurred. What I found most interesting was the intensity of the debate and how great it was to listen to. Korey and I looked forward to listening to the podcast of each day and hearing the debates. It really was great radio and it made me so proud that it was occurring in Canada. I have been a big supporter of Canadian literature ever since I read Margaret Laurence in high school and Canada Reads really helped me justify and remember why I was so passionate about it before. Canadian literature isn’t just Anne of Green Gable or stories about the prairies, not that there is anything wrong with that, but Canadian literature today is thoughtful literature about important issues. We have so much talent in this country and Canada Reads really works to show that. While it may be unrealistic to expect a novel to change the country, these novels definitely bring up important issues and will hopefully inspire conversations and maybe even other debates that may not have occurred otherwise. Apparently this year was an overwhelming success for Canada Reads and the debates inspired me to read the titles I had yet to read myself. Hopefully many others will too.

8 The Kingston EMC - Thursday, March 20, 2014
Our paper took note of a spate of editorials over the past few weeks taking aim at the politicized notion that the middle class is in decay. The authors marshaled Statistics-Canada data to demonstrate that income, wages, and net-worth were all up across the board over the last 15 years, and therefore the crisis is a complete fabrication. Margaret Wente’s “The phony crisis of the middle class proclaimed “every income group in Canada has gotten richer, while the people at the very top have gotten filthy rich. Is this a problem? You decide, while the National Post’s John Shmuel wrote “the three middle quintiles — which can roughly be defined as Canada’s middle class — increased their share of the country’s $8.07 trillion personal net worth by 1.8 percentage points.  The overall message was crystal clear: The data speaks for itself. You’ve never been doing better. Keep calm and carry on. Everything is fine. Well, not quite. As economists Eugene Lang and Frank Graves have argued in the Toronto Star, Wente and Shmuel gloss over the fact that the net worth boom is almost entirely due to the phenomenal increases in housing values, which has had the doubly negative effect of pricing a new generation out of the housing market while enabling boomers to drown themselves in lines of credit and credit card debt. Then of course, there’s the troubling question of how long can the housing boom possibly last before meeting its inexorable end? Total debt has increased 110 per cent over the past 15 years, from about $450 billion to well over $1 trillion. These are supremely uncomfortable debt-loads, all underpinned by a housing market that may very well be on the brink of catastrophe. This level of personal debt is relatively new for our country, and most economists worth their weight fully realize that it’s not at all sustainable without significant economic growth. Which turns us to the question of wages. Methodologies vary on how best to calculate what income growth translates to in real-world terms. Most have settled on the concept of ‘real wages,’ which is a reflection of how much your earned income can actually buy when it’s adjusted for inflation. Andrew Sharpe at the Centre for the Study of Living found that the median real wage increased from $41,348 to $41,401 (in 2005 constant dollars) over 25 years. That’s $63. Not exactly boom time figures. In fact, the same Stats-Can report referenced by Wente and Shmuel found that over 30 years, real wages only grew by $2.50 for men and $4.50 for women, which translates to 11 per cent and 26 per cent, respectively (in 2010 dollars). Hardly enough to support and drive the kind of debt binging currently fueling the economic “recovery from the 2008 economic collapse. Things are different now - more precarious, less just. We really aren’t richer than we think.

There are few things in life more serious or stressful than being diagnosed with cancer. No matter what form or stage of cancer a person has, successfully managing the disease takes all of a person’s health, willpower and resources. And even then, there is no guarantee of success. Worse, the conventional treatments used to eliminate cancer tend to leave patient sick, weak and with longterm health complications. However, there is a safe, proven and gentle alternative to help combat cancer. High doses of Vitamin C delivered through intravenous therapy can help treat cancer and enable people to better manage the illness. Modern pizza lovers are an adventurous bunch, going to great lengths to add variety to their lists of preferred toppings. For example, amongst India’s Top 10 favourite pizza toppings you’ll find a trilogy of unconventional tastes that includes ginger, minced mutton and tofu. However, the crew at Bubba’s Poutine and Pizzeria www.bubbaspizzeria.com are absolute purists when it comes to the most important topping of them all – the pizza sauce. Bubba’s reputation starts with their signature pizza sauce, made with a recipe that is over 30 years old. Of course, they’re not about to list all the ingredients that go into its making – after all, a magician never reveals the trick to the magic, and Bubba’s does have competitors that would love to know their sauce recipe. However, there are some things to know about pizza sauce that can help give you a more educated pizza palate when choosing your favourite pie. The first thing to recognize is that there is a profound difference between pizza sauce and pasta sauce. Despite their shared tomato base, quality pizza sauce should have a much thicker consistency than typi-

cal pasta sauce. Although it can be done, making your pizza with pasta sauce will result in soggy pizza unless you par bake the crust before you apply your sauce. There are typically two schools of thought when it comes to the choice of sauce. One thought is that “fresh” is the way to go, topping a pizza with an uncooked sauce that would include a blend of canned whole tomatoes processed with only a few added spices. This is certainly a more traditional and authentic style. The second school adheres to the belief that a pre-cooked sauce is the better option. Pre-cooked sauce would be thicker thanks to the cooking process and the addition of spices, olive oil, garlic, onions and thickeners like tomato paste. Most large commercial pizza chains use cooked sauce. Every pizza made at Bubba’s begins with a pizza sauce and dough recipe that has 30 years of customer satisfaction behind it. Best of all, Bubba’s offers many different types of pizzas with different topping combinations, so you can choose off the menu of customize your own creation. Sibling bond leads to success on the court By Mark Kerr Reporter
Heritage Sports--The La Salle senior boys’ basketball team rarely lost this past season, but when the Black Knights did drop a game, you didn’t want to be around the Graham household. “It can get heated,” said Jesse Graham, 19, who along with his brother Tanner, 17, helped lead La Salle to an Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athlete Association AA title. They were coached by their mother Karen Graham. “Normally the car rides home (after a loss) aren’t bad. It’s after we let it settle and then talk about it: that’s when it gets heated. We talk about it for hours. We talk about it at the dinner table.” A passion for the game enveloped Jesse and Tanner from a young age. Their earliest basketball memories were formed on the backyard court where they would lower the nets and practice dunking. That gravel court, which was eventually upgraded to a concrete

ate from La Salle this spring, but they plan on sticking together after high school. They will attend Queen’s University in the fall with the hope of cracking the Gaels’ lineup. Jesse has been accepted to concurrent education, physical education and general arts, while Tanner has been accepted to engineering and science and hopes to hear about kinesiology in the coming weeks. As close as they are, the brothers never set out to attend the same university. “It wasn’t like we were going to go together no matter what. More and more we wanted to go to the same university,” Tanner said. The Graham brothers know they have to keep improving to make it at the university level. For Jesse, that means getting quicker and improving his shot. Tanner is focused on working on his speed, quickness and refining his ball-handling skills in order to make it as a guard. “It’s something new. I don’t know what to expect, but I am going to go in with an open mind,” said Jesse. 649 Justus Dr “[What the Queen’s trainers put 613-384-7447 us through this summer] is going to www.grantstile.com be tough,” said Tanner. pad, hosted a fair number of intense games of one-on-one and American 21 between Jesse, Tanner and their older brother Dale, who was their assistant coach at La Salle. “There’s been some battles back there,” said Jesse gesturing to the makeshift court. “For American 21, you have one person on offence and two defenders. It gets everybody involved. It’s maybe not the best for developing skills but it was fun.” The brothers started playing Knights of Columbus basketball in grade school. For the most part, they have always played on the same team up through elementary and high school and club basketball, except for a short stint where Tanner played in his age group. Playing together for so long and being brothers offers a certain advantage, according to the younger sibling. “I find you always know where the other one is on the court more than anyone else,” said Tanner, who plays the guard and small forward positions. “We seem to know each other’s tendencies.” The brothers inherited a strong basketball pedigree from their mother, a former member of the Canadian national team. She began coaching at La Salle five years ago when Jesse entered Grade 9. “She knows her stuff. She tells us stories and shares situations she has been in that are unique,” said Jesse, who played forward and centre in high school. “But I would say it’s like having any other coach. It’s not really any different.” Coach Graham led the team to a 35-6 record this season and a berth in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championship. The Black Knights bowed out in the quarter-final, losing to the eventual champions, the Mississauga-based Ascension of Our Lord Eagles. The Black Knights advanced to OFSAA after winning the EOSSAA AA title. The victory came after a disappointing loss to the Frontenac Falcons in the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association championship. “It was a really great season,” said Jesse. “We had a great start and then we had a lot of adversity to get through. I loved every minute of it and I am glad I came back to play.” “It was a lot of fun,” Tanner said. “It was a really good group of guys.” The Graham brothers will gradu-

Tir Nan Og: when you’re in need of a drink Up in my grill
Up In My Grill - St. Patrick’s Day, held each year on March 17, is not just for the Irish; around the world people celebrate with shamrocks, leprechauns, feasts and beer. In
Kingston, the hooley (the party) is definitely on at the Tir Nan Og Irish pub, located at 200 Ontario Street, across from Springer Market Square. The pub is located in the Prince George Hotel, which is one the oldest buildings in Kingston. It’s rumored to be
haunted. Close your eyes, and while you may not encounter ghosts, you can imagine that you are in the Irish countryside at a local watering hole. There are not one, but two long mahogany bars to swill beer and whisky at. Each seating area is separated into little nooks

from bar stools to cozy chairs to wooden barrel seats typical of any good pub. In the summer, the sprawling patio is a great place to dine. On a cold day, I prefer sitting next to the fire, but so does everyone else, so plan ahead. In fact, I wish there were big comfy chairs next to the fire instead of the table for two, but then, I’d probably never leave. Since 1986, the “Nog” as it’s fondly nicknamed, continues to serve up good times for all. Each week they feature live music generally of the Irish flavor, but not always, and it doesn’t have to be St. Patrick’s Day for you to nosh on traditional Irish fair. The menu ranges from the usual grill items to comfort food like boxty, Guinness crocks and fish and chips. The “blarney chips” are waffle fries topped with tomatoes, green onions and cheese – yum! Mostly known as a drinking hole, the food can be inconsistent in taste, but the service is always warm and friendly. Irish food tends to be seasonal, local and simple in preparation. While potatoes, steak and lamb are often featured, the Irish are also known for fish dishes. I tried the fish and chips the day I was into Tir Nan Og. The flaky, perfectly fried pieces of halibut and a pint of lager made for a superb lunch date. Although, my hubby would argue my best Irish pub experience was on St. Patrick’s Day nineteen years
ago, when I met him during the Irish festival in New Zealand. There is an old Irish saying, “In heaven there is no beer. That’s why we drink ours here.” I love all things Irish, and thankfully we have a little slice here in Kingston at the Tir Nan Og. Every Sunday there is live jazz at Montes, the lounge located inside Tir Nan Og and with a valid Queen’s student ID you can enjoy 25 per cent off food items at the “Nog”. Follow them on Facebook or sign up to receive their monthly newsletter to learn of more promotions and featured live music events. In the spirit of the Irish, here is a simple fish recipe to try: Tilapia and Tomato Sauce Makes 4 servings Browning the fish fillets first keeps them golden and crisp when you add them to the sauce. You can also fry them completely in the skillet for 8 minutes and serve with the sauce spooned over top. Ingredients: 3 tbsp. (50 ml) extra virgin olive oil 1 onion, sliced 3 cloves of garlic, minced 1 sweet red pepper, sliced 1 tsp. (5ml) of dried oregano or 3 sprigs of fresh oregano ½ tsp. (2 ml) ground cumin ½ tsp. (2ml) each, salt and pepper ½ tsp. (2ml) hot pepper
sauce 1 punnet of fresh cherry tomatoes 2 tbsp. (25 ml) chopped fresh coriander 2 tbsp. (25 ml) orange juice 1 tsp. (15ml) lime juice 4 tilapia or catfish fillets (any white firm fish will suffice, but these are my favorites) Directions: In a shallow Dutch oven, heat 1 tbsp. (15ml) of the oil over medium heat; fry onion, garlic, red pepper, oregano, cumin, half each of the salt and pepper, and the hot pepper sauce, stirring often, for 15 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Add tomatoes; bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes or until thickened and reduced to about 2 cups (500ml). Stir in coriander, orange juice, and lime juice. Meanwhile, in a non-stick or cast-iron skillet, heat remaining oil over medium high heat. Sprinkle fish with remaining salt and pepper; fry, turning once, in batches and adding more oil if necessary, for four (4) minutes or until browned. Nestle into hot sauce; simmer for 4 minutes or until fish flakes. If you have a food biz or restaurant suggestion please email me at ladydinesalot@gmail. com or follow my blog at LadyDinesAlot.com.

Local hockey players head to Italy for International tournament mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Heritage Sports – For many young boys, hockey is life. They dream of one day playing for the NHL or travelling abroad to play for different international teams. For 11 year olds Donovan Sebrango and Nicholas McGowan, that dream is becoming a reality a little sooner than they expected.

it looks like there,” added McGowan, who along with Sebrango has been selling the book locally to raise funds for the trip. Pecota agreed to donate the profits from her book during the month of March to the boys and as part of this gracious offer, the boys spent Friday, March 7 promoting the book at Chapters in Kingston. “They’ve seen a lot of response to the book today and they have sold quite a few,“ added McGowan’s mother Caroline Barette, “They are
here all day and then they go play a game tonight so we’re definitely making them work for the money.” The boys have also been campaigning to local businesses, making grilled cheese sandwiches at their parents’ offices and looking for any other way to raise funds for their trip. While it may be hard work, they both see it as just another step towards enjoying their favorite sport abroad. “My favorite part of playing hockey is the experience of getting to meet new friends and go to different
places around the world,” explained Sebrango. “I’m looking forward to getting to stay with our teammates in our rooms and we won’t really see our parents very much either so that will be fun too. It is kind of like a vacation but it’s even better because we get to play hockey too.” Hockey Across Canada is available at Chapter for the rest of March and retails for $10 with proceeds going to McGowan and Sebrango for their trip to Bozano, Italy at the end of April.

Donovan Sebrango (right) and Nicolas McGowan spent all day Friday March 7 selling ‘Hockey Across Canada’ at Chapters to raise funds for their upcoming trip to Bozano, Italy to play in an international tournament.
The boys will be travelling to Balzano, Italy at the end of April to participate in an elite International Hockey tournament. Both are Minor PeeWee players with the Greater Kingston AAA Minor Hockey Association and they were scouted by two different organizations -McGowan by Selects Hockey, and Sebrango by Pro Hockey Development last fall. The boys were selected from over 300 kids who tried out for each team and the fact that they were chosen is quite the accomplishment. “I went to the tryout in Buffalo and there were eight other goalies there and a lot of kids and they picked the best players and luckily I made it,” remembered McGowan, who has been playing hockey since the age of four. While the tournament is certainly exciting, it is also costly. They boys have been reaching out to local sponsors to pay for the $5,000 trip and have been doing multiple fundraisers too. “We’ve been trying to contact everyone we know to get sponsorship and help for our trip,” added Sebrango. “I’m really excited to play and meet new people and maybe try some new foods while I am there too, we just need to get there first.” Recently, their fundraising campaign gained more momentum when local military artist Silvia Pecota learned about the boys and their future travels. Pecota, coincidentally, is from Bozano and recently wrote and illustrated a book called Hockey Across Canada. “The book talks about the different provinces across Canada and focuses on hockey in each province and what

phy encourages people to come out to the event simply to enjoy the day as a family. Events start at 9:30 a.m. with the children’s run and then at 10 a.m., the 5k and 10k races start. During the longer races, kids can enjoy a wide range of activities like crafts, musical activities and a break dancing demonstration. “The event is really just about raising awareness and having fun,” added Murphy. “We also award each child that participates with a medal as a thank you to them and to show that we appreciate kids helping other kids. That is really what it is all about.” The run/walk takes place on Sunday March 23 at 9:30 a.m. at the Queen’s Athletics Centre, 284 Earl Street. To register or to donate visit www.kingstoncdc.ca

which made me realize that it was special.”
Very positive experience “Today I have taken the Hair Volume tablets for 38 days and I can truly feel an improvement and less hair loss. My nails are also stronger and less grooved. All in all a very positive experience. I will definitely continue taking this product”, relates a happy Christie.
DID YOU KNOW? Grey hairs can begin to appear due to a lack of copper in your diet. Hair Volume™ tablets contain copper, which affects melanin production to help avoid grey hairs.

Heritage Events – Hopefully the snow melts by March 23, otherwise participants in the annual Children’s Development Centre (CDC) run may be skiing across the finish line instead of running. The group’s annual run has been going on for a number of years, but after a brief hiatus, this new and improved version of run is celebrating its fourth anniversary this year. While planning for the run each year can be time consuming, the end result is always worthwhile. “We have a run committee that organizes the event and on that committee are some staff, volunteers from the hospital, community volunteers and we also have a parent that is volunteering,” explained CDC worker and run organizer Nicole Murphy, “We start planning back in August and it really is a lot of work, but our goal in the end is to provide a really fun and great event to help increase our presence in the community. This is our only fundraiser and it allows us to be able to purchase some of the very expensive special needs equipment that we use for treatment. We try to keep on top of technology and trends and we want to be able to help our clients as much as possible.” The CDC in Kingston is one of 21 chilExciting dren’s treatment centres in Ontario. They are an outpatient facility for children and Opportunities youth ages 0-21 who have neurological, in Healthcare physical or developmental disabilities. This includes kids that may have cerebral palsy, autism or Down syndrome. The centre ofPharmacy Technician fers a variety of services for these patients and their families. Legal Administration Proceeds from the run will go towards new equipment for the centre, but some Medical Administration funds will also go towards the ‘Chances for Children’ fund. Small Classes “There are many different donors into this fund and it is designed to help families Hands-On Training with the extraordinary cost of raising a child with special needs,” explained Murphy. Work Placements “As children grow they often need home renovations and when parents are no lonSpecialized Curriculum ger able to bear that cost they come to us. 5 tips for buying a vehicle this spring 5 ways to eco-drive trucks or large SUVs. You can find a vehicle with moderate thrills that won’t cost a bundle to fill up or maintain. Think light, think small, think efficient. Your friends will be impressed with your concern for the environment if you choose a smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicle that produces fewer greenhouse gases. Why buy a bigger, more expensive vehicle when a smaller, greener one will do? Do the math. Check the EnerGuide label on the vehicle for the fuel consumption ratings. The label gives you an idea of how many litres; always strive for the lowest fuel consumption rating. For example, a vehicle with a fuel consumption rating of seven litres per 100km would use about half the fuel than a vehicle with a rating of 14 litres per 100km. If you’re looking to purchase a used vehicle, you can still get fuel consumption ratings from websites such as www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca, which will also give you estimated annual fuel cost. What a great tool for budgeting. By analyzing your driving lifestyle, choosing the vehicle and power that’s right for you and doing your fuel consumption homework, you’ll be driving in style in no time—with money in the bank and a green mindset.
(NC) Accelerate gently. The harder you accelerate the more fuel you consume. In the city, you can conserve fuel by easing onto the accelerator pedal gently and gradually. Pretend there’s an egg under the gas pedal and an open cup of coffee on the dash. Try to drive without breaking the shell or spilling the coffee and you’ll be good to go. Maintain a steady speed. Be consistent. Unintentional dips in speed and sudden bursts of acceleration take a toll on your tank and your wallet. In fact, tests show that varying your speed up and down between 75 km/h and 85km/h every 18 seconds can increase your fuel use by 20 per cent. Use cruise control whenever possible. Anticipate traffic. Read the road ahead, anticipate road disruptions, monitor the movements of pedestrians and other vehicles and keep a comfortable distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. and pickup trucks operate most fuel efficiently when travelling between 50 and 80 km/h. Anything above this optimal speed zone and vehicles consume increasingly more fuel the faster they go. For example, if it takes $10 worth of fuel to drive a certain distance at 100 km/h, it would cost $12 to travel that same distance at 120 km/h. That’s like throwing a toonie out the window every 100 km.

like driving for free. By anticipating traffic slowdowns as early as possible, you can decrease your speed, conserve fuel and save money by simply taking your foot off the accelerator. Today, most vehicles are equipped with fuel-injection systems that automatically shut off the flow of fuel to the engine when the accelerator is fully released. Avoid high speeds. (NC) Let’s face it. Spring fever isn’t about love at all; it’s about cars. New cars, used cars, car shows, car showrooms, car ads, that new car smell and test drives. For those in the market for a vehicle this spring, there are some things you can do to make the experience interesting, rewarding and satisfying. The first is to become informed. A video produced by the Office of Energy Efficiency at Natural Resources Canada is a great place to start. The video is fun, entertaining and informative plus it describes everything you need to know for making that allimportant first purchase. In a nutshell, it offers five great tips for buying your first car. Analyze your driving needs. Where do you live? What do you do? How will you use your vehicle? How many people and things will you carry along with you? How much will you travel each day? These are just a few of the questions you can ask yourself to help give you a realistic idea of the size and type of vehicle you’ll need. Analyze your choices. Gasoline, diesel, electric or hybrids are your basic power choices nowadays and each has its advantages depending on your driving needs. Avoid temptation. There are some thirsty, fuelguzzling vehicles out there and they’re not all pickup

Lifestyle - “Hi Brian, My wife and I have a small RV based on a 2004 Chevy Express 3500. We just got back from a 13,000 km trip through the US. We ran into a consistent problem that we have also seen here but to a lesser extent. The newest gas pumps are often so fast that they constantly click off no matter how delicately you grip the handle. In one instance, I was only able to get a few cents of gas at a time. Pretty frustrating with a 125 L tank! One gas station maintenance guy told me that the newest pumps put out 6 gpm (gallons per minute) whereas the previous ones were only 1.5 gpm. My impression is that some pumps have a slow start while others go full blast from the beginning. If you want a local reference, Ultramar is where I find the problem the worst. Any suggestions on how to solve this problem? Thanks, Dan
else’s table. While John didn’t mention anything about his health, statistically his age brings a higher risk of losing his driving privileges than the average driver. If he signed a new lease and then lost his license, he would still be legally responsible for all monthly payments and fees. If the worst happened, his estate would be responsible for these costs. Now the same could be said for a consumer loan used to pay out the lease, but on this side of the coin, the vehicle is worth more than the loan so its disposal wouldn’t be much of a burden. A loan for this purchase can be easily amortized to keep the monthly payments within John’s budget. Another issue to consider is the differences in vehicles. so they may be playing fast and loose with the rules. Another problem might be how the RV body builder adapted the evaporative emission controls that came stock from GM on the van, or the system may have developed a problem due to its age. If they relocated a vent or a vent line improperly it may cause a fuel spit-back. But if the RV is okay at most personal-use vehicle pumps, this probably isn’t the case. “Hi Brian, Can you advise me on the best way to proceed? I am 75 years old and live on a fixed pension. I leased a 2011 Honda Civic and made a substantial down payment to reduce my monthly leasing charges. The lease expires this month. I have just over 34,000 km on it and the car has been regularly serviced. I have a few options when the lease is up and I don’t know which is right for me. A) Return the vehicle to Honda and pay any damage charges (scratches etc.) and walk away. B) Lease a new Honda Fit for another four years (requiring another substantial down payment for low monthly costs). C) Purchase the Civic for around $9,000 plus tax (it will probably need four new tires and maybe a new battery). Some of my friends say to turn the car in and sign a new lease and keep my $9K in the bank.” John I usually can find several pros and cons to most solutions, but this one was pretty onesided. The current value on a 2011 Honda Civic with 34K km is anywhere from $14K$15K retail. John’s substantial down payment not only kept his monthly charges low, but drastically reduced the buyout figure ($9,000) on his lease. Walking away from the car means leaving a lot of money on someone

Daytripper - A facade of gardening made a life-altering impression on Rena Upitis. When the Queen’s University arts education professor attended a conference in Chicago in 2007 she noticed some odd things. “I was walking up the street and saw a concrete planter with mulch in it,” she said. “I looked down the street and saw a bunch more planters. A massive truck arrived, bringing tulips in full bloom. They planted them in the planters. They had to mulch them all or they’d die because they were growing them somewhere else and bringing them in. Someone said, ‘Oh, look, spring has arrived.’ But it comes in two trucks: one with mulch; one with bulbs.” Thinking that spring arrives when trucks bring blooming tulips to place in concrete containers struck Upitis as absurd. She realized that intelligent people can be heavily disconnected from nature. She returned to Kingston and wanted to create ways to provide education on sustainable living, our planet and the climate. Upitis thought she had to do something, and that something became Wintergreen Studios, a non-profit, charitable organization that offers year-round wilderness education and retreats in the Frontenac Arch and Biosphere, about an hour
from Kingston. Wintergreen offers an off-grid setting for workshops on arts, culture, education and sustainable living. They’ve also established an independent literary press. “Part of the impetus for Wintergreen was to provide a place where people could experience contact with the natural world,” said Upitis. “I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. How we live affects whatever future we leave for our children. “It’s also an interesting place for established and emerging writers. We’ve hosted readings by people like Lorna Crozier, Lawrence Hill and Stephen Heighton. We also hold regular events like dinner concerts and other entertainment.” She said Wintergreen has brought the local community together. “We’re about an hour out of Kingston,” she said. “Locals who come to our events tend to drive about 15 minutes to get here. The community has become united by having Wintergreen here. We have entertainment, concerts and readings that the world would envy and many of our visitors only drive minutes to get here. It’s been a huge community builder for locals.” Upitis explained that funding for the setting comes from a variety of sources. Wintergreen relies on revenue from workshops and events, rentals for people who want a visionary meeting
or personal retreat in the woods, and from donations. “We also have a number of partnerships with community organizations and grant income sources,” she said. “These include TD Friends of the Environment and the Ontario Trillium Foundation.” They also host free events for schools and a regular open house series so people can see the kinds of things that go on at the site. “There are so many myths out there about living off-grid and renewable energy,” she said. “Off-grid doesn’t have to be ugly, dank and dark. Wintergreen is a working model of how a centre can function in a way that is respectful of the environment without obsessing about every detail. Many of the techniques we use can be integrated into homes, work, and schools.” She said the guiding vision at Wintergreen is the art of living sustainably. “The art part is important,” she said. “The sensibilities we bring as artists to sustainability education have the ability to intertwine art, culture and the environment in powerful and energizing ways. We want to model a kind of living that is really satisfying and connected to the natural world.” Wintergreen also features gardens and they grow a lot of their own food used during events. “We operate with the idea of being

The idea is to be mindful about the choices we make, but not to beat ourselves up if every choice isn’t perfectly correct. In that spirit, we hope to encourage people to make small changes in their lifestyles that, cumulatively, have an enormous and positive effect.”
She offered an example of how altering our appliance usage can have a significant impact of power consumption. “Many appliances continue to draw a small amount of power when they are switched off,” she said. “Vampire power costs US consumers $3 billion a year. Fitness and exercise tips for beginners You want to get into shape, but you aren’t sure where to start. Cardiovascular (cardio) exercise is a good entry point into the world of fitness. Cardio includes anything that really gets you moving, such as walking, running, and the like. Before you even consider stepping on a treadmill or an elliptical machine, you need to make sure you’re ready for it, mentally. Tip #1 Remember that you’re worth it. Exercise is about more than physical exhilaration. It’s about transforming your body and mind, into a state where you believe that you’re important enough to deserve the body of your dreams. Tip #2 There are no shortcuts. It’s all about you. Change won’t happen unless you really want it to, and part of that means being fully committed to daily exercise. Tip #3 Work out, and then work out some more. Don’t slack, give it

your all each and every time you head to your fitness club. Do five more minutes of intense cardio, or 10 more reps with weights. Push yourself. Of course you want to make sure you don’t push yourself too far, so make sure you have a personal trainer or fitness professional by your side when you’re first starting out. Any successful exercise regimen will include both cardio and weight training. Cardio is a good place to start, but in order to burn the maximum amount of calories, weight training is necessary. Remember it’s not just about losing fat, but also building muscle, and raising your metabolism. If you think you’re ready to take the plunge and start exercising, visit Omega Fit Club in Kingston. You can call the club directly at 613-634-3484, send them an email, or visit their Facebook page for more information.

Local teens perform with rock stars at the K-Rock Centre By Hiba Kesebi Reporter
Heritage News - Twenty dancers from Kingston’s TK Danceworx had the oncein-a-life time opportunity to rock the stage with Hedley during their March 8 concert at the K-Rock Centre. And rock it they did. Shaking their hips to Hedley’s Cha-Ching, the girls not only had the audience captivated with their performance, but even Jacob Hoggard, Hedley’s lead singer, had to turn around a few times to look at them. “He was surprised,” says Alana Stevenson, one of the 20 dancers who performed at the concert. “He kept on turning around to look at us and people in the front were videotaping, some were waving. It was just a great experience.” The performance, which was a highlight of many girls’ dance lives, came by surprise, explains Tina Kyle, director and founder of TK Danceworx.
A week and a half before the concert, Kyle received a phone call from Hedley’s production assistant requesting some of her dancers to perform to ChaChing on stage. “A lot of these dancers have been with me for over 10 years so it was easy for me to pull them in and tell them this is what we are doing. We learned it [the dance] in a couple of sessions,” says Kyle. But according to Stevenson, rehearsal was one thing and the actual performance was another. Before Hedley, the girls had only performed in front of hundreds of people and the dance to Cha-Ching marked their first performance in front of an audience of thousands. “The time right before [performing] was pretty scary. A lot of us felt like we were going to be sick, because we never danced like that. And then when we ran on stage and we saw the lights and people cheering that all went away,” recalls
Brianna Acton, who has been dancing for more than 13 years. And when the girls got on stage, it was all a blur. “It was just so good. It felt so great to be up on stage,” says Cierra Blundell, a dancer of 11 years. But it wasn’t just the on stage performance that had the dancers excited. The backstage experience did too. Their favorite backstage moment was of Hoggard coming out of the dressing room with toothpaste on his face. “He had white toothpaste near his lips and no one
said anything,” smiles Kyle. “Then we took a group photo and that’s when he noticed and he’s like “Why didn’t anybody tell me I had toothpaste on my face!” “It was just an amazing experience. I’m still high from the energy of it,”
laughs Blundell. The dancers are now looking forward to perform at the Harlem Globetrotters show on April 3. For more information about TK Danceworx visit: www.tkdanceworx. com.

Giller Prize winner Lynn Coady imparts knowledge on writing and the importance of literature in society during visit to Queen’s University By Hollie Pratt-Campbell hpratt-campbell@perfprint.ca
Heritage News - Author Lynn Coady admits that she was a little shocked when her name was called as the winner of the 2013 Scotiabank Giller Prize for her book of short stories, Hellgoing, last November. “I was really surprised,” she laughed. “It almost felt like a cheat. “With [my novel] The Antagonist, which was nominated in 2011, I had worked my ass off on that project for two to three years and it almost killed me. It felt like that’s how it should feel when you finish a book. You should feel dead. And so if that had won…I would have felt vindicated.” Hellgoing, Coady noted, felt like a much easier and more straight-forward process. She is quick to point out, however, that the difference between the two books is likely due to the fact
that the stories in Hellgoing were written over a 15-year period - most long before she ever had the idea to compile them all in a book. “Most of them had been edited already too because they were published in magazines, so it was like they were ready to go. There were only maybe three or four of the stories that were fairly new and maybe needed a bit more polishing. All that was really left was just to decide which order to put them in and away it went.” The Kingston Heritage sat down with Coady when she came to Queen’s on March 10 to visit with the university’s English students. The event was part of a seven-year tradition of visits from the winner of Canada’s most prestigious literary award. More than anything, Coady hoped to impart a sense of how significant the concepts of story and narrative are to our lives. “I think it’s probably harder and
harder to get students interested in long-form narrative for its own sake,” Coady said. “And so I think it’s important, for not just young people, but for everybody to keep in mind that narrative is all around us. It’s sort of what gives meaning to our lives, and fiction is one version of that. “I don’t want people to feel like fiction is this elite, cloistered, inaccessible art form that only fancy people have access to and are interested in,” she added. “I want to impart a universality and relevance to fiction.” Coady also had some advice for young writers who are serious about breaking into the field: think of writing like it’s your job, even if you don’t get paid much at first. Indeed, she noted that this was how she was able to form the habits that eventually allowed her to become such a successful writer. “I was unemployed when I was first starting out, so I had a lot of time for it.

It was the mid-‘90s and I couldn’t find a job, so I decided to treat writing as my job because I figured that’s what I want to do anyway. I didn’t have a computer in those days so I thought I’ll go to the nearby university, I’ll log onto one of the computers in the morning and I’ll write all day. I’ll come home at night and it’ll be like I’m going to work.” Coady later completed a master’s degree in creative writing from the University of British Columbia, which gave her four years to focus completely on her writing. “Starting from an early age, I’ve always prioritized writing because I thought it was the most important thing and I thought that I didn’t need to have a lot of money to live,” she said, adding that “In my 40s now I sometimes get angry at that person for making those decisions on my behalf because I lived without very much money for a long time, but that’s how I became a writer.” Author Lynn Coady.
