City expresses interest in preserving public access to federal heritage property By Bill Hutchins
Kingston Heritage – The federal government wants to dispose of another Kingston waterfront property. Once again, city council is unlikely to make a purchase offer for the spacious grounds which include the original home of Kingston’s first mayor. But it does want to ensure public waterfront access and heritage buildings are protected in the event the land is bought by a developer. “We don’t need to buy the site to ensure public access to the waterfront. We’re very open to partnership with another entity or developer that might be interested in developing other parts of that property,” said Mayor Bryan Paterson. Public Works and Government Services Canada has served notice that it intends to declare the former Correctional Services Canada (CSC) regional headquarters at 440-442 King Street West as surplus. The spacious land includes a collection of mid-19th century buildings with heritage designations - St. Helen’s, Red Cross Lodge, Grant House and Stone Gables. CSC operated its regional headquarters out of the historical buildings until its offices were relocated to a new building on Union Street a few years ago. The now-vacant architecturally significant buildings sit on 3.5 hectares (8.65 acres) of waterfront property adjacent to the city-owned Tett Centre and Queen’s Universityowned Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts. Councillors recently instructed staff to submit a report to the federal government outlining a “public purpose interest” in preserving the buildings and waterfront Kevin Caird, owner of Geek Spazm located at Picker’s World, and Katelyn Cooney check out some of the collectable comics on access, and existing utility easements.

Kingston Heritage - Several Kingston neighbourhoods will be losing their leaves this spring and summer. In fact, entire trees will be cut down. The city is about to embark on a massive removal of the ash tree canopy to combat the spread of the emerald ash borer (EAB). The unwelcome insect, first verified in the Kingston-area in 2013, is slowly but steadily destroying ash trees from the inside out. The city is planning to spend millions of dollars over the next few years to either treat or remove 3,500 trees along streets and in the parks. The job is so big that the city will hire a contractor to help out its own forestry crews. City officials say the massive chainsaw cull was ordered to try and stop the dreaded insect from spreading to other communities, and as a pro-active measure to stop diseased trees from falling down. The program, however, will only apply to ash trees on municipal property along boulevards and in parks. Private property owners will have to pay for their own tree removal, if they so choose. “The city is responsible to keep people safe from dangers associated with infested ash trees. And property owners are responsible for ash trees on their own properties,” said public works manager Troy Stubinski in a news release. Crews have already been busy spray-painting trees on municipal property that are destined for destruction, and will start cutting them down in May. Prior to that, the city is hosting three public information seasons; April 27 at the Isabel Turner Library, April 28 at the Central Library branch, and April 30 in the library at Sir John A. Public School. All times are between 6:30 and 8 p.m. City experts will be on hand to answer questions and to explain the EAB Impact Cost Mitigation Plan. City officials say they’re aware of some concerns they can expect to encounter from homeowners, such as; removing trees prematurely, a desire to retain street trees in front of their property, a desire to remove a sick tree for safety and aesthetic con-
cerns, and a desire to choose the species of replacement trees. This summer’s first phase involves the removal of 425 ash trees described as in poor condition, and they will be replaced with 500 trees of other species this fall. “This infestation was unavoidable, but we are using this as an opportunity to diversify our urban forest and to better locate the replacement trees away from other infrastructure,” explained Stubinski. Only about 600 healthy mature ash trees will be spared the axe. Those deemed in good condition will get a special bio-insecticide injection. But officials say the cost is just too high to treat all 3,500 ash trees, which represent about 12 per cent of Kingston’s urban tree canopy. The city will spend $1 million a year over the next six years to control the spread of the insect. It’s not the only municipality to encounter the costly problem. “EAB infestations have already killed 150-200 million ash throughout North America,” noted Davey Resource Group, a city-hired consultant that drafted the cost mitigation plan. The Asian beetle is believed to have arrived in North America in wood packaging material in 2002. Since first being detected in Windsor the beetle has spread aggressively through southern Ontario. Trees invaded by the centimetre-long dark metallic green beetle typically lose 30 to 50 percent of their canopies within the first year, and the trees will die over the course of two to six years. While mature beetles feed on the leaf edges, the larvae tunnel through the bark hampering the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients from its roots to its canopy. An infected tree is, essentially, starved to death.

Counter Blvd. business park gets cheers from planners, jeers from neighbours By Bill Hutchins
Kingston Heritage – City planners are recommending approval of a new business park on a recently-widened section of John Counter Boulevard, even though dozens of neighbours remain concerned about its impact on their homes. “The applicant is proposing the development of a Business Park and a commercial development with a total of approximately ten (10) buildings and a commercial site that includes a gas station, car wash and convenience store,” according to a report by planning director Paige Agnew. Fort Henry Investments Inc., a development company owned by Doug Springer, has unveiled plans to construct small-scale office buildings with about 11,000 square metres of total floor space at 1122 John Counter Blvd., right across the street from the city’s bus terminal. The property is currently zoned industrial, but planners recommend that commercial and retail uses be allowed on the rectangular-shaped vacant lot covering nine hectares on the southeast corner of John Counter Blvd. and Leroy Grant Drive. They are satisfied the development will not interfere with the enjoyment of a nearby residential neighbourhood, noting on-site parking will be at least 10 metres from the houses and retail uses will be limited to 25 percent of the overall floor space. In addition, the developer will dedicate some of the space for public parkland. “The development of a portion of this underutilized site into a public park to service the area will provide a positive contribution to the area for employees, visitors and residents,” Agnew’s report noted. Planning staff’s recommendation went to the planning committee April 16 and, if approved, the application will be sent to council for the final
okay. The business park is not without its critics. Nearby residents on Wycliffe Crescent and Rockford Place have voiced concerns about noise, odour, privacy, safety, light pollution and loss of green space. They signed a 110-name petition asking the city to increase the separation distance of the proposed development (including parking) from the abutting residential properties, and to construct a sound barrier. “Currently there is the bus station and Tim Hortons and now there’ll be the added buildings. This will certainly be an increase in noise as well. I’d like to know if there will be a sound barrier type wall put up behind our houses on Wycliffe Crescent?” asked resident Timothy Rendell in a letter of objection. Most of the commercial buildings will be situated away from the frontage of John Counter Blvd. and closer to the homes. The development includes a 400 car parking lot that stretches 430 metres along the southern edge of the property, close to 36 backyards, residents complained. “We are not against the commercial development of this land, but are very concerned about the ramifications of its close proximity to our properties,” stated another letter of complaint on behalf of Wycliffe residents. However, city officials say many of the neighbourhood concerns have either been addressed in the rezoning setback provisions, or will be addressed through the site plan process when a noise study, lighting, landscaping and fencing issues are slated to get a closer review. The proposed development is about the same size and just a block away from the Alcan Business Park, which is home to offices such as Intercall and Revenue Canada. The developer hasn’t revealed what type of tenants will occupy the buildings.

St Helen’s Villa CSC and Stone Gables Mansion
City expresses interest in preserving public access to federal heritage property Continued from page 1
“We’ve also expressed to them we want to make sure the future uses are compatible with the adjacent properties,” explained commissioner Cynthia Beach. Council was given until March 27 to identify its future expectations for the site, although the federal government has not yet set a timeline to invite potential buyers to submit purchase bids. The pending disposal of the King Street property comes at a time when the federal government is also moving ahead with plans to sell its Marine Museum and Dry Dock property at 55 Ontario Street. Even though both sites have waterfront access and heritage ele-
ments, Beach says the property disposal process is different. “It’s not a divestiture,” she explained of the King Street lands. “They’re viewing it as a strategic property. The same rules don’t apply.” St. Helen’s is an 1837-built yellow brick and stucco villa that was once home to Thomas Kirkpatrick, Kingston’s first mayor and hosted Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, in 1860 as a guest. It has elements of Regency, Edwardian and Victorian in its design. It’s also one of the last and best preserved examples of large country estates that once lined King Street West, according to experts. Next door is Stone Gables, a large Tudor Revival style stone mansion with cast-iron fencing, setback from King
Street, built as a private residence in the 1920s. Last year, the previous council served notice that it plans to protect interior features at St. Helen’s - such as fireplaces, doorways, the staircase and main door - from any future alterations unless they are first approved by the heritage committee and council. Mayor Paterson says he’s not completely ruling out a municipal purchase of the site, but prefers to work with another owner to protect civic interests. “We’re keeping options open at this point.” When asked whether the city should buy the house of Kingston’s first mayor for sentimental and historic reasons, the current mayor quipped: “I’ve got a nice house in the west end.”

Kingston Heritage Editorial - “I learned long ago never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty.” -George Bernard Shaw Such words of wisdom can apply to so many different levels. Take Kingston city council’s decision to tinker with the procedural bylaw that governs its own conduct. Deciding to rewrite the rule book on the fly should be avoided at all costs. One reason? Temperamental politicians should not be making up their rules of engagement based on a one-night stand. It benefits no one to make fast and furious changes to the rules of order in the name of political expediency and transparency. Make no mistake. This rule book is the difference between fairness and a free-for-all. Councillors will often hang on the exact wording of the procedural bylaw to try and benefit their positions. The mayor also relies on the specific rules to maintain order. While there’s nothing wrong with politicians seeking to revise their rules of engagement from time to time – when to speak, how to act, when to keep quiet - they need to resist the urge to fix things at the same meeting, assuming that it’s broken to begin with. This happened when two motions recently surfaced with the aim of amending the procedural bylaw; one would give any councillor the chance to amend a motion on the floor regardless of whether they’ve already spoken for their allotted five minutes, and the other would replace the two-thirds majority of votes needed to overrule the Chair’s decision with a simple majority of votes. Both ideas seemed innocuous on the surface. The first motion, as introduced by Coun. Jim Neill, is aimed at giving councillors another chance to be recognized after their five minute speaking limit. It’s based on the presumption that a councillor may have a ‘eureka’ moment later in a same debate that didn’t occur to them sooner, and they would now have more flexibility to speak again and amend a motion. Council toyed with the change, and even fine-tuned it, to allow councillors an extra one minute of speaking time if they want to amend a motion. Said Neill: “I don’t think it’ll be abused.” The second motion to amend the procedural bylaw would, in essence, make it easier for council to overrule any decision of the mayor with a simple majority, which is much easier to achieve than the current two-thirds threshold. But it didn’t take long for councillors to plunge head first into a confusing debate as they tried to refine the first motion to suit their political tastes. It resulted in several amendments, attempted amendments to the amendments, and general frustration. At one point, it was suggested the timekeeping mayor could keep track of the remaining minutes (or seconds) not exhausted

by a councillor’s five-minute limit, and give them the ‘unused’ bonus speaking time later. But can you imagine the problems that would create, forcing the mayor to constantly stare at a stopwatch instead of keeping track of what’s being said? Mayor Paterson warned it could actually make council meetings “much longer and much messier.” The mayor could be seen putting his head into his hands as councillors kept trying to perfect the word-

ing to reach a compromise. It didn’t work. “This debate illustrates the dangers of dabbling with our procedural bylaw,” the frustrated mayor noted. It was nearly 30 minutes into this debacle before council finally had its own collective ‘eureka’ moment – to pack up the entire debate and let a committee sort it out. A wise choice. Council’s attempt to rewrite its procedural rulebook sparks confusion only after an ad hoc committee had spent four years thinking through the pros and cons of making changes to its rule book. Four years! This council tried to do it in a few minutes, and eventually realized this procedural pig had escaped from the yard. Knowing why they want to change the rule book is one thing. Knowing how to do it is something completely different that, hopefully, the committee can figure out before this matter returns to council.

Editorial
My silver screen debut
Editorial - If my first great love was literature, the second was film and the third the art of adapting books into films. In fact, if I had continued my graduate studies past a master’s degree, I’m sure my PhD thesis would have had something to do with adaptation. I remember taking a course on the subject at U of T and doing papers on Sex and the City (a newspaper column turned book turned wildly successful TV show), as well as the famous Heart of Darkness/ Apocalypse Now adaptation. I was hooked. It didn’t even feel like work. Here in Kingston, we are fortunate to have an extremely talented adaptor/film maker in our midst: Anthony D.P. Mann. Anthony is a colleague of my husband, so I always had an idea of who he was and knew he made films; however, I didn’t meet him properly until I did a story about his film version of Gaston Leroux’s The Phantom of the Opera a little over a year ago. Steve and I attended the premiere of Phantom last April. To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, but I ended up loving it. The story is creative and en-
gaging, the acting excellent and the overall feel of the film consistent and satisfying. It amazed me that someone could make such a high quality movie on a shoestring budget right here in Kingston. At the premiere, I met a tight-knit but welcoming community of regular Kingstonians who, though technically amateurs, had come together and made a movie that was actually really good, even by professional standards. I remember thinking that Anthony was the kind of person I wanted to be around. I like to surround myself with those who are creative and optimistic - people who empower others and make them feel like they too can be part of something great. I knew Anthony was already hard at work on his next project, A Christmas Carol, and had a strong urge to get involved. I approached him about it and learned we share an obsession with the classic Charles Dickens tale and its many incarnations. In fact, I’d wager A Christmas Carol is the most adapted story in the English language – a fact that in itself makes it particularly interesting to me. I was thrilled when Anthony agreed to give me a bit part in the movie. After all, it’s hard to have a life-long obsession with movies and not secretly want to “star” in one – even if you’re not really an actor. My scene was filmed in Gananoque on a cold evening in late March. I played a charitable lady volunteering at a soup kitchen. The whole thing only took about

In Our Opinion three hours, but I learned a lot about acting and filmmaking in that time. First of all, there’s a lot of waiting around involved. Second, it’s hard to pretend you’re not cold for the camera when in reality you’re freezing your butt off. Believe it or not, my bright pink, down-filled (and extremely warm) coat was not deemed acceptable attire for 1890s Kingston, when Anthony’s Christmas Carol is set. Instead, I wore a light 19th century style dress and velvet shawl, both generously donated by friends. Still, I wouldn’t change the experience for the world. I didn’t have any actual lines, but I did get to improvise a little with the extras and Anthony has promised me some “face time”. I’m not sure exactly when the movie will be available for watching, but I would expect it to premiere sometime around Christmas. I for one am already excited to see it. I haven’t read the script, but I’m confident Anthony’s Christmas Carol will be amazing. The mere idea that it’s set in Kingston should add an interesting twist, not to mention the fact that the three spirits are played by women and Scrooge, who is quite elderly in the original story, is played by Anthony, who is in his 30s. Plus, it’s probably the closest I’ll ever come to fame – unless someone decides to adapt these columns, Candace Bushnell style…but they probably don’t contain quite enough sex for that to ever happen.
Is Earth Day still making an impact? Editorial – This week, on April 22, the world celebrated Earth Day, the 45th annual Earth Day to be precise. Many marked the day by bicycling or carpooling to work, participating in garbage clean-ups or packing a litter less lunch. While all of these practices are great, we have to wonder, are they still making an impact or is the day simply a false front? Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year. It was originally proposed as a day to inspire world peace and remember to care for the planet we live on, but over the years the celebrations have shifted. Now, the majority of the world celebrates Earth Day by briefly changing day to day behaviors or by protesting about governments and organizations who are failing to protect the planet. Canadians certainly fall into the latter category and right now we have a lot to raise concern about when it comes to protecting our planet and doing our part. A few weeks ago, Canada failed to submit an emissions reduction plan to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change for review before the December convention. This is yet another disregard for environmental issues by the federal government and frankly it is embarrassing. The federal government continues to remain inactive when it comes to environmental legislation, forcing many provinces to take matters into their own hands. Last week, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne signed a historic deal to join Quebec’s cap-and-trade system for carbon emissions. While many of the details still need to be worked out, it is definitely a step in the right direction for Ontario, but we need this type of action to happen nationally and not just provincially. There is only so much that we can do as individuals when it comes to prolonging the life of our planet. We need the government to lend support and show that these small acts can make a difference. As a country we can make a difference and there is still time to get back on track, we just need to be on the same page.
Kingston is celebrating Children’s Arnprior Chronicle-Guide Mental Health West Carleton Review week In this moment many of you might be thinking...We don’t have any of those problems, so that doesn’t include me or my family. Well if you don’t today you’re ‘blessed’, but it might be different tomorrow. This is where education is important for all of us, especially our children. Children’s Mental Health week is celebrated across Ontario May 3rd -9th this celebration is about increasing awareness of the signs of child and
youth mental health problems and decreasing the stigma and understanding that help is available. The more we talk about this, the more we reduce the associated shame and stigma so that young people can get the help they need when they need it the most. It’s about letting your little ones talk about the ‘monster’ under the bed that scares them. It is all about garbage... What to do? What to do? By Margaret Knott
Heritage-Following a recent article about the Wolfe Island Land Fill site and the announcement of its closure as a “Dump” in early September, Island history buff Brian MacDonld informed me with a picture taken in the 1920’s that the site was originally an active quarry. The Wolfe Island Landfill site is soon to become instead , a serious “Recycle Centre and Transfer Station”, a goal the township has been working toward over many years under the direction of engineer Guy Laporte - AECOM. For many, all this has come too quickly. For others, it can’t come soon enough. The rule however is that it “the dump part of the site” must close. In 1991 Guy Laporte then with Totten Sims Hubicki undertook a detailed assessment of the site. “Wolfe Island has been dealing well with the recommendations for the proper management of a landfill site and is planning for a recycling depot,” his report said. The landfill site always under close scrutiny by the Ministry of the Environment at the time, caused Reeve Hasselaar
to say , “we are very serious about all this in spite of the difficulties that arise.” Personally I remember the Wolfe Island waste site the way it was when we moved from Toronto to the island. Very busy with regular burning, and garbage left at the gate for the site attendant to pick up, many times particularly over weekends spilled out and blowing in the wind. That was then, 20+ years ago. And this is now. Early last month Laporte, now a Wolfe Island resident presented an outline of the (Sept. 8 th) site closure with temporary alterations allowing for the Transfer Station to operate until its re-constructed re-opening before the end of October 2015. AECOM will provide the draft and final design for the landfill cap of the pit and for the Transfer Station (hauling and disposal of wastes) with input from the Wolfe Island Waste Management committee. AECOM will also provide part time inspection as work is undertaken. Recently Councillor Barb Springgay chaired a Waste Site Transition Committee meeting where Guy Laporte provided an overview
of key areas to be concluded: site closure itself; Transfer Station design/operation; waste hauling/disposal; waste acceptance levels; a schedule and Public Notification. He said some levelling at the site needs to happen; fencing is in poor condition and a swale designed to manage water runoff is required. Design, moving the hut, the fence , entry and exit locations as well as the placement of the many bins (paper, cardboard, metal, electronics, glass , bottles, plastic, Styrofoam ,compostable waste) will all be considered. CAO Plumley will research prices of compactors to reduce haulage trips. Springgay noting the the importance of reducing waste presented ideas from of a brainstorming session: clear bags; bag limits, User fees, hours of operation, signage, roadside dumping fines. She was quick to acknowledge that developing a long range plan for communicating with the public and providing information and education is of prime importance as the township moves forward. resentative to AMO Waste Management Task Force “We have been doing behind the scenes work at the county, and the Eastern Ontario Warden’s caucus (EOWC) and had asked to participate with AMO at the provincial level,” he said. “We are looking for support from cities to work together on a long term collective approach to waste management, how to handle our garbage 15, 20 years down the road. Municipally it has been too easy to dump the garbage in a hole in the ground. We have to change. County Council solidly endorsed that we must address this issue,”Doyle acknowledged. Islanders who may not have expected the closure of “the dump” so soon, have come a long way in dealing with garbage. Slowly but surely it’s the environment , the reuse of resources and the future that are considered.
Carbon pricing discussions begin Dear Editor: Just a week ahead of Earth Day celebrations, most of Canada’s Premiers met in Quebec City to discuss climate action and a national energy strategy. Unfortunately the federal government refused to participate. On April 11, I marched with over 25,000 people in the Act on Climate march in Quebec City. Marchers called on the premiers to take action on the climate crisis and protested the planned Energy East pipeline, which would put waterways in eastern Canada at risk. Canada is only eight per cent of the way towards meeting our rather weak greenhouse gas emissions targets, with no plans to achieve them. So far it has been the provinces that have taken the most action but until now there has been no coordinated effort. The revenue neutral carbon tax in B.C. that began in 2008 has significantly reduced the use of fossil fuels in B.C. while the economy has remained healthy. Ontario is the first jurisdiction in North America to close all of its coal fired generating stations thus significantly improving air quality. Economic experts say that the single most effective policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is to put a price on carbon. Canada’s Ecofiscal Commission found that GDP in 2020 is approximately 3.8% better under carbon pricing than it is under a regulatory approach. Ontario is now taking bold action to put a price on carbon by joining Quebec and California in a cap and trade scheme. However the
design and implementation will be crucial to the success of the system. Making it revenue neutral, not allowing any industry exemptions and making it completely transparent will help prevent corruption. We need to learn from the failures of the European Cap and Trade market. Although the provinces have taken a lead, much more needs to be done. Canada failed to submit our plan for carbon reductions to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change due March 31, 2015. The federal government announced that it will reveal its climate plan on June 7, 2015. Cap and trade between Quebec and Ontario is a step in the right direction, as the data from Canada’s Ecofiscal Commission made it abundantly clear: market-based mechanisms are superior to regulation. And when marketbased carbon pricing mechanisms are provincially-linked and revenue-neutral they are even better for growing the economy. In the long term the federal government must step in and coordinate a national carbon pricing policy. Most importantly, Canada’s final carbon pricing policy must have grassroots support and it must empower our biggest trading partner, the USA, to adopt a market-based carbon pricing policy. United Way recognizes some of Kingston’s most devoted volunteers By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News - Each year, 13 million Canadians contribute nearly two million hours of their time to volunteering for local organizations within their community; Maddie Hogan is one of these volunteers and on April 14 she was recognized for her contributions at the fourth annual United Way Volunteer Centre ‘Volunteers Grow Community’ awards ceremony. Hogan has been volunteering since the age of 16 and despite some physical setbacks, she still volunteers her time three days a week to the residents of Fairmount Home in Kingston. “Maddie was diagnosed with Spina Bifida at birth and doctors feared she wouldn’t live long,” explained her mother, Cindy Hogan following the awards ceremony at Memorial Hall. “She is 30 now and requires a wheelchair, but we can’t keep her away from Fairmount and the residents. Even in a snowstorm, she has to be there.” Hogan gives her time generously to Bingo, Beauty Break, one-on-one visiting, seasonal events, barbecues, baking, gardening and in the General Store at Fairmount Home. In 2014, she contributed 800 volunteer hours and this year she has already volunteered more than 200 hours of her time. “I really wanted to help people so that is why I started and I especially enjoyed helping elderly people,” said Hogan after
receiving her award. “I like helping make their life more enjoyable and helping them do the activities they enjoy and in some cases helping them break up their day and making them feel less lonely.” The feeling is mutual for the residents of Fairmount Home. They all look forward to seeing Maddie each week and when she faced medical complications a few years ago, the residents let her know just how much she was missed. “They were so kind and sent the nicest cards,” said Cindy. “They really missed her and they love having her around and it is so great to see that appreciation.” Along with Hogan, four other individuals received awards at the United Way ceremony including, Rick Farndon, nominated by the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Matt Williams, nominated by Bereaved Families of Ontario Kingston region, Darrell Petite, nominated by St. John Ambulance Loyalist Branch, and youth volunteer Mercedes Augustyn, nominated by the Epilepsy & Seizure Disorder Resource Centre. The ceremony was held as part of National Volunteer Week (April 12-18) and also recognized two volunteer groups who have volunteered for a local notfor profit group; this year the Knights Of Columbus Basketball League and the Intergenerational Community Health Volunteers were recognized for their contributions to the community and multiple representatives form each group attended the ceremony.

While only five individuals and two groups were recognized at the event, the United Way received 28 submissions from across the community before choosing the recipients of the awards this year. “It is difficult to decide when we get the applications, but these recipients really represent what it means to volunteer in the community,” said Jacquie Costron, regional director for the Investors Group Kingston, sponsors of the event. “Volunteers really do help build a community and hopefully these recipients will inspire others to do the same.” For more information about volunteer opportunities in the community visit http://unitedwaykfla.ca/get-involved/volunteer-centre/

Murder, mystery and intrigue come to the Domino Theatre in ‘Silver Dagger’ mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Events – Steve Marsh is a mystery writer, winner of the coveted Silver Dagger Award, but he has a problem; soon after his third novel is published, Marsh’s wife receives a series of phone calls and letters that threaten to destroy their marriage. This is the plot of ‘Silver Dagger’, a murder-mystery that is sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seat and it is coming to the Domino Theatre on April 23. “It’s a very intriguing play and as soon as I read it I wanted to direct it,” explained director Michael Sheppard. “I think it will be a great night of entertainment and certainly one that people aren’t expecting.” The play is written by Canadian playwright David French and was first produced in 1993. The play is set in Canada, but it is unclear when it takes place, something that Sheppard really enjoyed and decided to play up in his production. “There are vague references to different time frames, but nothing too specific and I kind of liked that and I wanted to keep that in the play,” he said. “I decided to do the play in grey-scale and really make it like a black and white movie. I wanted the audience to wonder when it was happening and see it in this sort of weird world where there is no colour.” The effect of the grey-scale is quite dramatic. All of the set, costumes, props and even the actors all appear on stage in black, white or grey and for actor Matthew Hunt, the concept was definitely exciting. “I’ve never been part of anything like this production,” said Hunt, a third year drama student at Queen’s. “You don’t often see thrillers on stage so this will be a unique experience and the production choices just add to that.” The play focuses a lot on relationships and specifically on a marriage that is on the verge of falling apart. Bianca Chelu, a fourth year

Queen’s drama student, plays Pam, the wife, in the play and while she had never played a similar character before, she really enjoyed playing a character that evolves throughout the play. “She is a very intelligent woman, but she is not super confident,” said Chelu. “She is really just happy to be with her husband and in her eyes he can do no wrong, but eventually she learns otherwise and she really learns to stand up for herself. I think the audience will really enjoy seeing her grow.” Sheppard hopes audiences will enjoy watching Pam grow too and he hopes that the whole aesthetic of the play encourages more people to come check it out. “I think this is something that people won’t see anywhere else. I think it will be really interesting to see and definitely worthwhile,” said Sheppard. “It is a really unique opportunity to see different design elements and see how they work and it should be a good show.” Silver Dagger runs Thurs. to Sat from April 23 to May 9 at the Domino Theatre. Shows start at 8 p.m. and tickets are available at the Grand Theatre Box Office. For more information visit http://www.dominotheatre.com/

Farm fresh flavours all year long hpratt-campbell@perfprint.ca
Events - Do you dream of freshly harvested strawberries, tomatoes and more in the dead of February? So do Nathalie Banger, Kat Evans, Barb Danielewski and Tim Gray, all of whom have been passionate canners for many years. “I like to think that my ancestors went through a famine or something so now it’s just engrained in me – gotta save it,” Banger laughs. “It’s so nice to open up something in the middle of winter and be like oh yeah, I remember that day that I did this.” “And it tastes so much better,” Evans adds. “It still has the farm freshness of local food, but you get to have it in February when the world is miserable and it tastes like summertime.” Evans and Banger both find that many people they talk to seem curious about canning, which led to a desire to share these skills with others. “People ask us ‘how do you can’? ‘Can we come learn’? So we thought let’s get this out of our home kitchens and into a proper space where people can learn something,” Evans says. Thus Summer Squirrel, a new canning instruction initiative, was born; courses will be held in KCVI’s classroom kitchen on five Sundays through harvest season: June 28, July 19, Aug. 16, Sept. 20 and Oct. 18. There will also be an “open kitchen” day for tomato canning Aug. 30. The dates are intended to line up with when certain canning-friendly foods come into season - e.g. everything from cucumbers, tomatoes and strawberries to the more adventurous pickled garlic scapes and asparagus. The star ingredient of each class may vary depending on how the season plays out.
“We’re going to play it by ear a little bit and see what’s super plentiful and in season and what people get really excited about,” Evans says. “Do people get really excited the first time we do a salsa? Do we want to do more than one? Do we want to do a peach salsa?” Banger notes that once you start canning, it’s easy to get hooked. “I started with jams one year because I was starting to get more into local food and I [had all these strawberries]. Then I got more into sauces and stuff. Now it’s like this compulsion every year to spend half my summer in the kitchen just putting stuff up for winter. I get stressed out if I’m not canning. What if I run out?” She’s even been successful at the Fall Fair, where the typically rather elderly canning community was excited to see a young woman take up the trade. “After my second year I started entering Nathalie Banger (Left) and Kat Evans with some of their canned goodies. Photo/Hollie Pratt-Campbell stuff at the Fall Fair. All the ladies there were so excited to see me - they were like, oh my god you’re like 20 years old. I only enter four or five things every year but I really like to see how that goes.” Evans points out that canned goods can also make excellent gifts. “I do a few things that aren’t my favourites but are favourites of people I love. Then at Christmastime here you go – summer in HOMe SHOW SPeCiAL a basket. And by then you’ve forgotten how much work it is.” 11/2 TON Of PeLLeTS WiTH The cost per workshop is $75, or $325 for all five in the series. ‘Spirit Horse’ hopes to spark Aboriginal studies and understanding in Limestone elementary schools By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News - Racism is a difficult topic to discuss with anyone – especially children, but a new play organized by the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) hopes to make the subject a little easier to broach. ‘Spirit Horse’, a theatrical production that chronicles the adventures of two Aboriginal children who challenge cultural stereotypes and confront racism, is currently on tour throughout Southern Ontario; the show made a stop at Duncan McArthur Hall in Kingston to perform for more than 200 Limestone Public school students in grades 4 to 8 on April 13. “The play is very high-energy and fast-paced and that is really important to keep the kids engaged, but it also has a great message,” explained Dakota Hebert, one of the four cast members in the production. “Together, the four of us play over 65 characters throughout the play and it is so much fun for us and the kids.” The play follows two urban First Nations children as their lives are suddenly changed; their grandfa-
ther brings them a horse that has mysteriously appeared to him and the children feel an incredible bond to the animal. The horse links them and their dad to their Stoney Nation heritage and brings them on a very imaginative journey that helps them heal and cope with the loss of their mother and wife and become a family again. “The play is really about racism and showing that we don’t know everyone’s story,” said Hebert. “These girls get called some very unfortunate names in the play and these names are not uncommon, but I think the play really works to point out the effects that those names have on people and it is really powerful.” The play was adapted by Ojibway playwright Drew Hayden Taylor and is being performed by Roseneath Theatre Group. The stop in Kingston is one of 75 throughout the province and the group has seen many positive responses to their performances since beginning their 100-show tour on March 30. “The play has been so well received and the students always have really interesting questions afterwards. I think they really get
it and that is amazing to see,” said Hebert. “They get a bit uncomfortable at times throughout the play, but that is really important and we want to see that reaction.” ETFO hopes the performances in each city will inspire conversations in the classroom and lead to more awareness and acceptance of aboriginal students within schools. “This play is a way to highlight the aboriginal issues, struggles, systemic discrimination and stereotypes that Aboriginal children may face when coming from a traditional background into the contemporary atmosphere,” explained Mike Lumb, President of the Limestone ETFO Teacher Local. “We see a large amount of aboriginal students in schools throughout Roseneath actors Timothy L. Kingston Fencing Club celebrates many accomplishments after Ontario Championships mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News – Everyone enjoys a good sword fight – especially members of the Kingston Fencing Club; the private club, started by Henk Pardoel eight years ago, started as a place for fencers of all ages to come out and try the sport and it has definitely grown since then. “I was the head coach for Queen’s and RMC fencing for many years, but I really wanted to start my own school,” explained Pardoel. “I wanted to be able to teach seniors, adults and kids and now we teach kids as young as six and adults as old as 84 and we have 84 members in total. It is a pretty big club for a smaller city and we see more and more growth and success each year.” The club teaches everything from beginner level classes to high level competitive classes. The club also competes in numerous competitions throughout the year and recently took home nine medals at the Ontario Fencing Championships. “We did really well,” said Pardoel. “One of our students, Aaron Olmstead, brought home a
gold medal and became the provincial champion in his category so that was pretty exciting.” Olmstead has been fencing for a number of years now and decided to give the sport a try after not liking hockey and soccer; he loved fencing immediately. “I love the intensity of fencing,” said Olmstead. “With other sports you have short bursts of intensity and a lot of time off, but with fencing the entire sport is entirely about that intensity and you are constantly going back and forth with your opponent. It is such a rush.” At the age of 15, Olmstead knows that he still has a lot of room for improvement with the sport, but he hopes to one day compete in the Olympics. “That is my ultimate goal, but for now I just really enjoy the sport and I think a lot of other people would too,” said Olmstead. “Everyone wants to come in and try sword-fighting at least once and if they stick with it, it is a sport that works out your entire body and it really is a lot of fun.” Pardoel certainly echoes these sentiments and sees fencing as a great activity for kids who may
not enjoy team sports, but still want to be active and involved. “We attract a lot of the kids who are more into gaming and things of that nature and they want more of an independent activity,” said Pardoel. “Fencing is really great for kids because it focuses a lot on hand-eye coordination and it really helps kids build confidence in themselves and I think a lot of people don’t realize that.” The next step for the club is Eastern championships in Sherbrooke at the beginning of May and then Canadian National Fencing Championships in June and Pardoel is confident that the club will do well again. “We have a really dedicated group here and I hope more people will join to be a part of that. Fencing is a great sport and after 35 years I still love it and I love coaching too.” For more information on the Kingston Fencing Club visit www.kingstonfencingclub.ca The club is also running a series of summer camps this year in July for a variety of age groups and skill levels. London Calling A recent Heritage Festival performance for the students of the Regiopolis-Notre Dame (Regi) high school senior band provided the dream trip of a lifetime. This was no ordinary jaunt to a local performing arts centre. Before Easter weekend, the senior band hopped on a bus that took them to Montreal. There, they caught a plane to London, England. After a three-hour wait on the tarmac due to an equipment glitch on the aircraft, the rest of the trip went off smoothly. Hugh Johnston, who is in charge of Regi’s music program, as well as conducting the band, explained how the trip came about. The Regi band has taken part in the Heritage Festival for the past
several years. The Heritage Festival has been held throughout the United States since 1980. About three years ago, the Festival sites expanded to Europe as part of the WorldStrides Heritage Performing Programs. High school ensembles who participate in the Festival are ranked according to international standards. The most talented and highest ranked ensembles, which could be choirs, bands or orchestras, are invited to perform in the Festival at Carnegie Hall. Two years ago, the Regi band made it to this top level. According to the Heritage Festival website, Festival at Carnegie Hall gives the most elite choirs, bands, and orchestras the opportunity to perform on the Ronald O. Perelman Stage in the Isaac Stern Auditorium, the largest performance venue at Carnegie Hall, and learn under the direction of internationally acclaimed adjudicators and conductors. After the musicians proved themselves in many locations, doors

opened for them, including Carnegie Hall in 2013. “In the past three years, we’ve had some phenomenal trips to Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Strathmore in Washington,” said Johnston. “So we felt we needed to up the ante if we could. But how do you top Carnegie Hall? I’m not sure you can, but I thought
London could equal that.” He said that what he thought would be a good trip exceeded everyone’s expectations. “The planning to get there was more difficult,” he said. “It wasn’t just a bus trip. We had to plan an overseas trip and it was only the festival’s second time running it in London. But the reaction of the students being there in that setting, they fell in love with the place. I wondered if it was just going to be another big city trip for them. But this was a very special experience

for them to go to Europe and live in a different culture.” He gave an example of some of the girls who went for lunch in Windsor and quickly realized they weren’t at home in Canada. “One of the girls asked if they had iced tea,” said Johnston. “The guy said, ‘No, this is England.’” He explained that the organizers of the tour helped make the whole experience positive. “We had two fantastic tour guides,” he said. “They met us at the airport, then took us to everything and kept us well informed. They knew all the nooks and crannies. They even took us on the tube (subway). Some days we had our own private double decker bus to tour the city.” It was also a special trip for Johnston. It was his first trip back to London since completing his Master’s Degree at the University of London. Still jet-lagged on their second day, the band had to perform. They were on their game. “There was great adjudication,” said Johnston. “It was a good learning experience musically. The concert hall was superb and we received the gold standard at the awards ceremony. At some festivals there isn’t a lot of interaction between student groups, but they got to socialize and meet students from California and New York.” This was the first time that a Regi ensemble performed in Europe. “This was important for the students to realize we were representing more than just Regi,” said Johnston. He got in touch with Kingston’s mayor, the premier, and representatives at the school board. He heard back from most with letters of support. He even received a message of well wishes from Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, whose message said: “Music is the most ancient and truly international lanContinued on page 27

Healing hands Stefan Duerst’s creative heart and hands are also adept at healing. The metal artist and blacksmith has completed his registration training and opened his own practice in the relaxation method of Jin Shin Do®, which literally means “the way of the compassionate spirit.” The popular t-shirts with the slogan “Keep Calm and....” should probably read, “Keep Calm and Jin Shin Do.” The technique is a combination of traditional Japanese acupressure, Chinese theory and Ericksonian psychotherapy. It is recommended as a relaxation therapy, to be used as an adjunct to qualified medical or psychological care. It is purported to assist the healing process by releasing tension, decreasing stress and encouraging a sense of increased well-being. in 2009, Stefan Duerst became involved in Jin Shin Do® when he accompanied his wife, Tanya Harrington, to a training program in Mexico. “Tanya has been training for about ten years,” said Duerst. “We went to Mexico to visit her teachers and they became my teachers, too. They gave me a session and I wanted to learn more. I did it for my own sake to deal with my own stuff, and I just kept going. I really enjoy the theory behind it.” Since then, he’s travelled to Mexico, California and Lasqueti Island off of Vancouver to complete his own training. Tanya is not yet registered as she still has to complete a mandatory examination. However, the couple recently decided to work together. Stefan offered a treatment so I could understand the process first hand. Wise move. Having experienced a 90-minute session, it’s safe to say that the technique’s claims as a useful relaxation method are valid and
accurate. I’ve taught relaxation training programs in many settings. Jin Shin Do® takes it a step further. Rather than simply allowing a state of mental relaxation, the addition of pressure on acupressure points definitely releases negatives and provides relief from stress. When I met with Stefan, I’d just been through a horrible month of upper respiratory infections with a resultant complete lack of energy. What happens to many of us, myself included, when we become ill, is that we also become increasingly stressed. We cannot keep up with the usual expectations of ourselves and entire a negative spiral develops, from which it is difficult to break out. During the Jin Shin Do® treatment, I felt the external life pressures become less relevant and then non-existent. I felt completely relaxed for the first time in weeks. So much so that, when the session was complete, Stefan slowly brought my focus back to the here and now. He made me sit up for several minutes while we chatted. He said he didn’t want me driving right away. For lack of a better explanation— and I’m guessing here, as no EEG was taken to confirm this—but I think that during the deep relaxation I’d entered an alpha brain wave state. We talked about our own forms of artistic practice and how much of it is intuitive and inspired in the moment. When I start a photographic session, I usually have no idea where it will end up. The same applies to Stefan’s metal art. He explained that the intuitive approach he uses in his artistic craft serves him well in Jin Shin Do® practice. He does not begin a session with a pre-conceived idea regarding what a client needs. He needs to listen to the client as well as his own intuition. “It’s important to know the theory,” he said. “But you also have to follow your intuition within your working knowledge.” During a session, the client remains fully clothed while lying on their back on a massage table. It’s a non-intrusive and noninvasive approach. During this time, the acupressurist applies pressure to a number

guage joining us all. Good luck to everyone in the Regiopolis-Notre Dame Senior Concert Band with your travel and concert in London!” “We made a display board at school so the kids could see that this trip goes beyond them,” said Johnston. “I told them, ‘You guys are representing our school, province and country.’” In addition to the band performing in England, the entire tour focused on the arts and cultural events. “There were some highlights like seeing Billy Elliott (the musical),” he said. “What’s great about that show is that it touches on the dance aspect of a boy’s life as well as the miners strike in England. You see what life was like in northern England in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Sometimes in a musical the storytelling is rushed. But the pacing in Billy Elliott was perfect. It made me believe in the West End, not that I didn’t before, but it gave a real appreciation.” Other highlights included visits to the Tower of London, Big Ben and Windsor Castle. “Just experiencing the city was exciting,” he said.
of acu-points that follow the eastern medicine concept of energy meridians in the body. It’s safe to say you’ll leave a session with significantly less stress and tension than you started with. The theory and philosophy is that over time, our reactions to stress involve holding feelings and emotional responses with muscular tension. The flow of energy through the meridians is inhibited and blocked. The pressure applied by the practitioner on the acupoints of the body helps to release the blockages to energy flow through the meridians, thus relieving the client’s pent up stress. Stefan continues with his artistic metal work, but now practises Jin Shin Do® on Friday’s in Kingston in the Chiropractic Matters clinic at 1343 Princess Street. You can book sessions on other days at his rural property near Verona, where Stefan and his wife live and are developing a beautiful re- Artist and certified Jin Shin Do practitioner Stefan Duerst works on a treat setting that includes a treatment room, client. “All the walking and being on the tube and going to the Shakespeare Globe Theatre. It was built as a replica of Shakespeare’s theatre in approximately the same location, using the same materials and construction methods. It’s open in the middle and you watch in the round while standing in stalls like in 1600. People say it’s the best place to watch Shakespeare.” What’s next for this talented band? “I think we’ve reached the pinnacle,” said Johnston. “One of the reasons for reluctance to make the London trip was the expense. I didn’t want to exclude anyone, although everyone who really wanted to go went. We had 61 students on the trip.” He said they won’t attempt to top the London experience. With their international gold standing in place, they can continue to perform in elite locations. “I think we’ll plan to go to New York again next year.” So, from London to New York, the Regi band continues to perform on stage in world class settings.

out and explore and we invited Dr. Dolph Harmsen to talk about his 40 years of research and take us on a tour of his project at Chaffey’s Lock.” Forty years ago, Dr. Harmsen, now a retired Queen’s University biology professor, began a 50-year research project studying the conversion of farm field to woodland. Using the Queen’s University property at Chaffey’s Lock, he has monitored test plots for four decades, comparing different methods of encouraging reforestation of old agricultural land. “We had three different treatments of the land,” explained Harmsen. “In one area we had fencing and we didn’t allow deer and rabbits to get in and eat the things in the field, the other treatment was to keep an eye on what was happening and if we saw insects coming in and feeding we would spray them and kill them and the last area was untouched.” According to Harmsen, the experiment challenges the generally accepted theory of succession in plant communities. Observing many local ecosystems, he has concluded that plant communities are really only one component of more complex systems, and that animals of all sorts must play a role in this holistic “ecosystem succession.” Harmsen will be sharing his findings with those in attendance at the meeting and he will also be sharing his plans for the next 10 years of the project. “The OWA works to promote the wise use of our private woodlands through education,” said Sexsmith. “We run workshops, lectures, demonstrations and we really focus on forest education and Dr. Harmsen certainly knows a lot about that. It will be interesting to hear what he has to say.” After a brief explanation of his work, Dr. Harmsen will lead a tour throughout the Chaffey’s Lock property. He hopes to show off some of the larger trees in the area and explain the different things that have occurred in each section. “Hopefully I can share some useful knowledge and help people with their own projects and properties,” said Harmsen. Following the tour, lunch will be provided and then the General Meeting will commence. After the meeting Dr. Harmsen and other forest professionals will be available for questions and Sexsmith encourages people to come prepared. “If people have any questions pertaining to tree health or forest health or what they should do in their own woodlot, this is the time to ask,” said Sexsmith. “It should be a great day and I think people will learn a lot.” Spring Field Day takes place on April 25 and starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Biological Station on Opinicon Rd. Pre-registration is required as there are limited spots available. For more information or to register please contact 613-373-9334 or owalimestone@gmail.com.

Seed ordering was one exciting yearly tradition heart that Mother would put a pencil mark beside the picture that took most of one page. Finally, she would have made her choices. The form was filled in from the back of the catalogue, and the order sent off in the mail in an envelope with a three cent stamp. Now, the wait began. And it was beyond my imagination, how, by simply writing a few lines on a piece of paper, sending it off to some far off city, and in due time, a packet would arrive with all the seeds my Mother had ordered. Of course, the entire mail system was a complete mystery to me to begin with! But then, just days after the order had been sent in, there the box would be! Sometimes it would come from Montreal, and sometimes all they way from out West... another miracle as far as I was concerned. Of course, Mother would have to have the money in her hand to pay for the seeds, because the box would come to us C.O.D. Mother knew how much I loved

seeing the box of seeds, and so the day it would arrive, she wouldn’t open it until after supper, and I was allowed to get the scissors out of the sewing machine drawer and cut the strings and open the box. And there would be all those beautiful packets of seeds! Just like the pictures in the catalogue. I would line them up on the table after the kitchen had been redded up, and stand them up against a drinking glass, all in order, so that I could see them better. And everything was in vivid colours. The tomatoes were the brightest red, and the cucumbers vivid green. I would take a packet over to show Father sitting beside the Findlay Oval, and he would look it over, make a grunting sound without taking his pipe out of his mouth, and that would be it. And sometime during the evening, he would again say the very same seeds could be bought right down the road at Briscoe’s General Store...and you wouldn’t have had to waste three cents on a stamp either.

But nothing could dampen my joy of playing with those crisp little packets of seeds. Soon Mother would plant them in little wood boxes Father had made years before, and they would sit in the kitchen until they sprouted and it was time to move them to the garden. I watched them daily, and when the first spot of green appeared, I was ecstatic. I’m not sure if I was more excited about the actual growth of the plants, or marveling again at the fact that by simply sitting down at the kitchen table and sending off an order to some far away city, a parcel would arrive. And that parcel in due course would turn into an ample garden and feed us for months to come. Yes, a miracle indeed. All for the cost of a three cent stamp! By the time Mother had written out her order on the last sheet of the Steele-Briggs seed catalogue, the pages were practically in shreds after many hours of pouring over the choices she would make. The little catalogue would arrive early in the Spring, and the cover would be masses of bright flowers, some I had never heard of, and certainly would never find their way into the flower beds out in Renfrew County! But anyway, flowers weren’t what Mother was interested in. Her interest was in the pages of vegetables, all listed alphabetically and looking so real, it seemed you could just pick them up and eat them. Father could never understand why Mother even bothered with
ordering packets of seeds from the Steele-Briggs catalogue. Sure, you could get the same seeds right down the road at Briscoe’s General Store! Mother knew that, but she said there was something about ordering seeds from some far off place, and besides, there was a written notice that satisfaction was guaranteed or you would get your money back. I asked Mother if that meant if the seeds didn’t turn into vegetables, would Steele-Briggs send back the few dollars she had laid out. “That’s exactly what that means,” she would say, with a firm nod of her head. “Fat chance,” Father would say from his place near the Findlay Oval. From the day the little catalogue arrived, it rarely left the end of the old pine table in the kitchen. Mother liked nothing better than to thumb through its pages, and with a pencil put an ‘X’ beside what she thought she might order. Seeds for tomatoes, cucumbers and beans seemed to interest her the most, while pictures of big green watermelons kept me captive, and I hoped with all my

1949 Prefect a perfect blend of old and new The British-built 1949 Ford Prefect owned by Claude and Irene Dube of Harrow, Ontario, is an awesome award-winning street rod. Claude’s wife Irene found the car in Amherstburg in 2006. It needed a lot of work and this would be Claude’s first experience at building a street rod. The transformation took seven years. He repaired the front fenders, hood, and inner fenders, made new running boards, added one inch to the rear fenders, frenched in the licence plate and a pair of 1932 Ford taillights, reskinned the trunk lid, and reworked the shape of the doors to fit the openings. He fabricated a new floor and tunnel, tubbed the rear wheels, raised the trunk floor for the custom gas tank, built a new fabricated frame, and installed a custom Mustang II front end with coilovers and sway bar. Claude cut 21 inches off the 9-inch Ford rear end, installed Bear axles, a 4-link setup with panbar and coilovers, and a rear sway bar. He also installed a custom interior, complete with coffee cup holder! Now finished, it has won 17 trophies out of 19 shows. Claude made most of the missing parts himself. The car has been rebuilt as a resto-rod with a 350 Chev V8 crate engine and 700R4 transmission. The front wheels

are 15-inch and rear wheels 17-inch to give the car a slight rake. The Mustang II front end provides independent front suspension. The body has been channeled over the custom-built frame and the entire car has been repainted a dazzling Sea Moss Green. The first time out, Claude’s car won Best of Show at the Canadian Street Rod Nationals held in nearby LaSalle, Ontario. At another show the same year, his car won People’s Choice. At this rate of winning, we predict that Claude will soon have to build extra shelves in his garage to accommodate all the trophies. And this car is driven, not trailered. Last summer, the car travelled 4,000 kilometres (2,500 miles) to car shows and cruise nights, including Sarnia and the ones held regularly at the Canadian Transportation Museum at nearby Heritage Village (519776-6909). On the wall is a blue-on-white 1949 Ontario licence plate (A6569). Claude wanted to mount this on his car but was told that number is currently registered. He found another pair of 1949 plates (68K96) and mounted them on his car, made legal by YOM (Year of Manufacture) legislation.

Are there any safety concerns? Parents of young children may be hesitant to install a pool, but today’s pool installation codes consider many of the potential hazards of a pool and attempt to eliminate them. Fences surrounding inground pools with self-locking gates, as well as locking ladders for above-ground pools can eliminate accidental falls into unattended pools. Your municipality will have a list of requirements for pools, so peruse the list prior to making your final decision. If the decision has been made to move ahead with a pool, it can be helpful to understand a few facts about the process of installing a pool. Always work with a pool-installation company that has earned positive reviews and has a stellar record of service. While this does not guarantee that the job will not encounter problems, contractors with glowing reviews tend to have earned those reviews. Read reviews from unbiased, online customers as well as any friends or family members who have used a particular pool company. It’s important that homeowners recognize that the installation of a pool may require some heavy machinery, which can damage lawns. Fence panels may have to be removed to let in excavation equipment. Sand, soil backfill or gravel may be needed to level out a landscape, and things may get noisy and messy when the installation hits full swing. Some homeowners can handle installing above-ground pools on their own, but less DIYsavvy homeowners may want to leave the installation to a professional installer to ensure the job is done right. Always secure the proper permits and inspections prior to using the pool. This not only ensures the safety of swimmers, but also guarantees the pool is legal. Backyard swimming pools make for an enjoyable place to congregate when the weather is hot. Follow a few guidelines and ask the necessary questions to make a pool installation go more smoothly.
7
Now that the weather is warming up, many homeowners’ thoughts are drifting toward relaxing days spent soaking up some sun by the pool. Early spring is a great time to install a pool so the family has a go-to hangout by the time summer arrives. Installing a pool is a large financial investment, and homeowners considering adding a pool should not take that decision lightly. When attempting to determine if a pool is for them, homeowners may want to ask themselves the following questions. Is my yard suitable for a pool? Some yards may not be large enough for pools, while others may not meet the zoning requirements set forth by the town. Still other yards may have soil that’s not suitable for putting in an inground pool, or may have a high water table that can delay construction. What is the average weather? Will a pool be enjoyed enough to warrant the cost? Homeowners who live in areas that get many hot days will likely get their money’s worth. But if the climate suggests that a pool will sit unused more often than not, perhaps a pool is not the best investment. Can we afford it? A pool can range from a few hundred dollars for inflatable or self-installing models to many thousands for elaborate inground designs. You budget will dictate which type of pool you can afford to install. How will we use the pool? Decide if you’re putting in a pool for the kids, to entertain the family or to make an architectural statement in the yard. Having a clear sense of purpose will help to guide the decision-making process. Who will maintain the pool? Many homeowners tackle the day-to-day maintenance required to keep their pools clean and safe. Others hire pool cleaners to maintain their pools and ensure the water is properly balanced. Maintenance can cost additional money, so consider this potential cost when determining if a pool is for you.
