Medical campus to be built in Kingston’s east end By Bill Hutchins
News - Residents of Kingston’s east end could soon have improved access to non-emergency health care services. A Kingston developer, Clermont Group, has unveiled plans to construct a medical campus on 14 acres in the St. Lawrence Business Park at Highway 15 and John Marks Avenue. Clermont president Matthew Derbyshire says the $2.5 million project will offer 80,000 square feet for potential buyers to open doctor and specialist offices, an after-hours clinic, a pharmacy, medical labs and even a restaurant. “Our vision for the medical campus is to create a hub for Kingston residents and the region to access special-
ized and ancillary care.” He says the city’s east end has a definite lack of healthrelated services, and the development should vastly improve access. An artist concept shows the campus will be a collection of low-rise buildings surrounded by ample parking. Clermont wouldn’t confirm specific businesses that are interested in opening in the campus-style development, but it is being actively marketed. It’s close to CFB Kingston, StarTek and Tim Horton’s distribution centre. The site is also a short drive from some of Pittsburgh District’s fast growing neighbourhoods. KEDCO, the city’s economic development agency, says it worked with Clermont for the past year to make the
project a reality. “We are very pleased to see that further growth in the area is taking place, especially in the healthcare sector, which furthers Kingston’s deserved reputation as a regional centre of excellence,” said KEDCO’s acting CEO Donna Gillespie. Healthcare is a significant and growing sector for Kingston and the new medical campus brings great opportunity for non-emergency based services in private sector facilities, she added. Construction of the medical campus is expected to begin early in 2016, and it should be fully completed two years later. Derbyshire says healthcare professionals interested in purchasing opportunities are encouraged to contact the Clermont Group.

Canadian Blood Services needs 2,500 new donors in Kingston to keep up with demand mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News - Canadian Blood Services (CBS) needs 2,500 new blood donors in Kingston to keep up with current demands. “There is a constant need for blood across the country and in this community,” explained Pamela Mullins, director of donor relations for CBS. “Every 60 seconds there is someone in the hospital who is in need of a treatment or procedure that requires blood and in the summer, donors are even more important.” To lend a hand and encourage more donors, volunteers from CBS in Kingston, staff at the Boston Pizza on Gardiner’s Road and MPP Sophie Kiwala teamed up on July 29 for ‘pizza and saving lives’; the event took place from 5 to 8 p.m. at Boston Pizza and encouraged diners to learn more about donating blood and asked them to sign up for donor appointments. “An event like this is so important to us,” said Mullins. “It
allows us to get out in the community and interact with people and really just pass along more information. We are so grateful to Boston Pizza for reaching out.” Customers who attended the event and made a commitment to attend a blood donor clinic were entered into a draw to win free pizza for a year and also received a 15 per cent food discount that evening as a thank you. Mackenzie Curran, recent recipient of the City’s Youth Volunteerism award, was also on hand at the event to share her story with customers and encourage them to donate. In 2013, Curran was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a bone marrow failure that can lead to leukemia. She needed a bone marrow transplant and in November of 2013 an anonymous donor was found. Curran’s transplant was successful and during her procedures she received 27 blood transfusions. “The transfusions I received came from 27 strangers in the community and I want to use my
story to get others to donate and see the impact it can make,” she said. “Giving blood is something that many people don’t really think about and until you know someone who has received blood or hear a commercial asking for donors you don’t really think about the need. It is always good to let people know that they can do something so simple and save a life.” In the summer, CBS sees an even greater need for blood with car accidents and even heart attacks caused by the heat. Someone who is in a severe car accident can need up to 50 units of blood and someone who has suffered a heart attack can need up to five. “The demand is so high, but in From left, Rebecca Fryer from 98.9 the Drive, Krista Larocque, Mackthe summer we always see a de- enzie Curran, MPP Sophie Kiwala, Tammy Tuck and Cheryl Lapeyre Photo/Mandy Marciniak crease in donors,” said Mullins. teamed up for pizza and saving lives on July 29. “People get busy and they travel and we suffer.” ton right now. worth it and you can save a life. Tighter purse strings:
City records lowest budget surplus in recent years News – City Hall has far less budget wiggle room than in previous years. Stricter controls on spending of tax dollars have resulted in one of the smallest budget surplus years in recent memory, according to the city’s chief number cruncher. “It wasn’t very much,” said chief financial officer and treasurer Desiree Kennedy. The recently audited 2014 municipal budget revealed a surplus of just over $1.2 million – tax money the city didn’t need to spend. In previous years, the annual surplus is usually between three and four million dollars, or about one per cent of the overall operating budget. Instead, the 2014 surplus is less than 0.4 per cent of the overall budget of $363 million. Any unspent dollars are typically socked away in reserve accounts as part of a long-standing policy to cover unforeseen expenses. Of the budget surplus, $200,000 was placed in the police equipment capital reserve fund, $200,000 into the library capital reserve fund and the lion’s share, $881,000, placed into the working fund
reserve. There was far less going into the piggy bank this year. “Our budgets are getting tighter,” Kennedy observed. While it means councillors are budgeting closer to their actual spending needs, it also provides less room to cover emergency expenses. Last year, for example, the city dipped into its reserves to spend an extra $1.5 million for extensive road repairs caused by damage from a severe winter and repeated freeze-thaw cycle that caused roads to heave, crack or disintegrate into massive potholes. The city has also tapped into its reserves to help cover two successive winters where plow crews exceeded their annual budget to clear and remove snow. The relatively small surplus left over from 2014 gives the city less flexibility to pay for those types of unexpected costs should they arise. The city frequently draws from its reserves to pay for consultants, emergency repairs, support for community groups or hosting tournaments - just a few of the unbudgeted expenses where reserves come in handy. “It gets used for other one-time items that come up through the year. That’s
a good use for those funds,” explained Kennedy of transferring the surplus money from one pocket to another. However, she is confident the city’s finances are in good order and its credit rating remains solid. The 2014 budget surplus actually hit $3.7 million due to additional interest revenue earned on short-term operating funds, higher than projected supplementary tax revenues and federal payments-in-lieu of taxation, increased revenues from the sale of recyclable materials and net savings in salaries Seventies rock band Journey performed to a large audience of local fans at the Rogers and benefit costs as a result K-Rock Centre in Kingston on Sunday, July 26. I started taking courses and I think I took every course that I could and really immersed myself in pottery,” said Adams. “I loved it and I kept learning more and then I progressed to teaching too.” Adams started teaching children’s classes and summer camp groups. Soon after those experiences, Amaranth Stoneware expanded to their new location at 745 Development Drive and with more spaces for classes and pottery production, Adams started teaching adult classes too. “It is really rewarding seeing people come in and make something that they will have forever,” she said. “The classes can also be very therapeutic. There is a nice texture to the clay and it is tactile to work with it. The experience is very unique.” To give this experience to more

City eases commemoration rules to celebrate Alcan milestone News - City council is lifting its freeze on approving commemorative monuments in order to celebrate an important manufacturing milestone. Councillors voted unanimously to allow Novelis Kingston Works, formerly Alcan, to install a metal Kingston Remembers-style plaque, along with a bronze historical landmark plaque, to mark the plant’s upcoming 75th anniversary. “Alcan-Novelis is clearly a key
piece of Kingston’s identity,” said Mayor Bryan Paterson, who introduced the motion July 14. The plant’s diamond anniversary will be officially celebrated in September. The city currently has a moratorium on commemorative monuments, plaques and statues while it drafts a new policy to guide the placement, location and type of future markers. The need for a policy stems from concerns that Kingston is becoming cluttered with too many monuments
in its parks and other public spaces. The proposed commemorations policy, which council has not yet approved, aims to put a larger focus on aboriginal, women and ethnic achievements. The cultural services department says public input has made it clear the city has an abundance of military and British-Canadian dedications, and they want future markers to represent other themes. A proposal to designate a downtown area as Valour District to honour military sacrifices was recently
shelved due to the policy’s new direction. Council is also bending its own proclamation rules by declaring Sept. 12-19 as ‘Novelis Kingston Works Week’ in the city. The city doesn’t typically issue proclamations that involve private companies. “There should be an exception to that rule,” the mayor argued. Alcan-Novelis has been a key supporter of many local organizations and initiatives every year, giving back to the community, Paterson ex-
plained. The Kingston Works plant has been a fixture of aluminum making since 1940; it originally opened on 200 acres of midtown land to support the Second World War effort by producing rolled aluminum used in military aviation. In recent decades, the plant’s focus has shifted to support the automotive and special product markets. At the height of its production, the Kingston Works factory employed thousands of people.
Simple techniques to help you relax
Finding ways to relax can improve life at home and at the office. While it’s not often easy to find time to slow down, especially for those men and women juggling the responsibilities of career and family, the following are some simple techniques that don’t take much time but can have a positive impact on your day. • Take some time out from multitasking. The ability to multitask is a cherished commodity for parents and working professionals alike, but men and women can benefit from periodic breaks from their everyday juggling acts. Something as simple as focusing on a single task for 30 minutes at a time, as opposed to checking emails while preparing dinner or working on a project while answering a client’s phone call, can help lower stress levels and have a lasting and calming effect on your nerves. • Make time to meditate every day. Studies have shown that meditation can affect the circuitry in the brain, positioning it to more adequately respond to illness and stressful situations. Meditation has the added benefit of being a relaxing exercise, as meditation encourages people to sit with their feet on the floor with both eyes closed in a relaxing setting that is free of external distractions. • Walk away from your desk and couch. It’s well documented that spending too much time sitting at a desk can have a negative impact on your health. In addition to elevating a person’s risk of heart disease and diabetes, sitting at a desk all day long has been linked to repetitive stress injuries, obesity and back pain, each of which can contribute to stressful living conditions that make it difficult to relax. Men and women should spend at least five minutes each hour walking, whether they are getting up from their desk at work or getting off the couch at home. Doing so takes little time, but it can help to relieve stress at work and at home and improve your overall health. • Practice yoga. Yoga is another activity that can help men and women relax. Yoga involves a series of poses that helps stretch the muscles and aid their recovery from everyday aches and pains, including those that often result from stressful experiences or days at the office

How hard is it to just use common sense when on social media?
As I’m sure everyone has heard by now, St. Lawrence College business professor Rick Coupland lost his job recently after allegedly writing “It’s the queers they should be hanging, not the flag” above a post about a Florida pride festival. (Actually, the official wording is that he is “no longer employed” at the college but let’s face it, how likely is it that he just coincidentally decided to pursue other opportunities at the exact moment this controversy exploded?) Before I get into this, let me just say for the record that I am relieved this guy was (apparently) sacked for his hateful, bigoted comment. It’s disheartening to think that people with this sort of attitude still exist in what I sometimes dare to think of as our civilized society, let alone that they can be employed at an academic institution. It seems reasonable to assume Mr. Coupland was not in the habit of publi-
cally uttering homophobic slurs, otherwise this all would have come to light long ago - which begs the question: why on earth would he start now? I can only assume that he was either A) drunk, B) felt he was safely within his rights to make this remark, or C) both A and B; again I’m only speculating, but C seems like it could be the most likely option since it doesn’t appear that these comments were habitual. I’ve heard a lot of people talk about how Coupland’s firing denies his right to free speech (actually, I believe what he said is considered hate speech under the Criminal Code of Canada), and others suggest that what he writes on his Facebook page should be considered private and therefore immune from any consequences at work. As an admitted social media junkie, the latter argument is of great interest to me. I first joined Facebook in 2006, when I was still a grad student at the University of Toronto. After finishing my degree, I started thinking about applying for ‘real’ jobs and everyone – from my professors to my mom – warned that I’d better “get off Facebook” because “employers will go on there and check you out.” My question to them was always “have you SEEN my Facebook”?? estly, I have lived what has got to be the most boring, domestic life imaginable since I moved in with Steve at the age of 20. If a potential employer has a problem with a lovely photo of my husband and me standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, I don’t want to work for them. But even when I do engage in ‘questionable activities’ once in a blue moon, I’m not about to broadcast it all over the Internet no matter what the privacy settings are on my Facebook account. Quite frankly, I’ve never considered what I put on Facebook or Twitter – or even in emails, for that matter, to be entirely private. If I want to have a private conversation with someone, I talk to them face to face. Nothing that I’m not comfortable to have follow me around for the rest of my life ever goes into writing. Is someone losing their job over a Facebook post an affront to privacy? I would argue no, because how hard is it to just assume that nothing you put on your Facebook is private? Ten years ago, social media didn’t exist and no one complained about a lack of opportunity for privacy. As for people who post about “hanging queers”, etc.? I hope they keep messing up on social media so I can know who to avoid.
In Our Opinion
Remembering Flora MacDonald Editorial - On July 26, at the age of 89, long-time Canadian politician and Order of Canada recipient Flora MacDonald passed away in Ottawa. Her death impacted many people across the country, perhaps especially here in Kingstonian, where MacDonald served 16 years as a Member of Parliament. MacDonald was first elected as Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands in 1972. She was re-elected four more times before losing her seat in 1988. As an MP, MacDonald became the Progressive Conservative party’s critic for aboriginal affairs and northern development. She was also outspoken on constitutional issues, national defence, external affairs and reform of the penitentiary system. MacDonald was also concerned with the development of Kingston and played a key role in the construction of a breakwater basin in front of City Hall; the basin went on to be named the Flora MacDonald Confederation Basin. Outside of Kingston and just four years after being first elected on the national scene, MacDonald threw her name into the ring of contenders for the party’s leadership in 1976. She was defeated by Joe Clark, but the loss didn’t dishearten her; in 1979, she became the first female secretary of state for foreign affairs in Canadian history. A few years later, in September of 1984, she became the minister of employment and immigration under then-prime minister Brian Mulroney. MacDonald later became Mulroney’s communications minister in 1986. Even after losing a direct tie to Kingston and the Islands in 1988, MacDonald remained a champion for the city and in 2003 she was the honorary patron of the Campaign for the Kingston Seniors Centre. The successful campaign aimed to raise funds for the transformation of Portsmouth Public School into The Seniors Centre. During her career and even after, MacDonald was bestowed with many honours and awards, including the Order of Canada as an officer in 1992 and as a companion in 1998. Maclean’s magazine also honoured MacDonald with a lifetime achievement award in November 2014. Her life was worthy of the honour and she will be remembered fondly both here in Kingston and throughout Canada.

Downtown heritage bank development delayed for more consultation By Bill Hutchins
News – A Kingston developer has “retracted” plans to demolish and refurbish the former Tweed & Hickory store on lower Princess Street pending a review of the project with a city-hired heritage consultant. “Staff have met with the property owner who has agreed to meet with heritage consultants and staff to review comments. The property owner has also retracted its notice of intent to demolish to ensure that there is sufficient time to work through the questions and comments received,” according to a report to council by community services
commissioner Lanie Hurdle. But the delay may not be enough to appease some critics, who fear the project threatens to erode the downtown’s historic charm. ”The demolition of the building and replacement of the ground floor in glass and steel will completely negate any historical aspect of the building from the outside, destroying the quaint and historic nature of the street scape,” said local artist David Dossett. The Springer Group served notice earlier this year that it intended to demolish and redesign its buildings at 101-109 Princess Street, plus the buildings at 206 and 208 Wellington Street,
to accommodate an expanded Scotiabank branch. The project would create 21,475 square feet of office space, plus 27 underground parking spaces, for Scotiabank. The existing buildings, featuring some elements designed by wellknown architects William Coverdale and William Newlands, were destroyed by a fire soon after they were built in the 1850s, and later rebuilt. The Springer family has owned the site for over 60 years, and submitted a heritage impact study outlining the demolition and restoration plans. The original stones on the Princess Street façade, now hidden by a stucco exte-

rior, would be removed during the renovation phase and then put back onto the upper floors. But the ground floor would be rebuilt with mostly glass and steel to reflect contemporary retail banking. The study noted the infill project will improve the deteriorating heritage character of the mid-19th century buildings. “The character has been obscured as the result of decades of extensive alterations, such as the stucco wall covering, the re-sizing or elimination of windows, the reconfigured and rebuilt ground floor elevations, the large signage bands, and flat roofs. This loss will be reversed.” Coun. Rob Hutchison indicated his support for the preliminary plans. “I think it will be difficult to argue it’s a complete heritage loss because the development is actually going to expose the original heritage values.” Coun. Hutchison says removing the stucco exterior should be a benefit. “It’s going to be an interesting meld of modern (architecture) on the first floor, 19th century on second and third floors while maintaining the original roof line.” However, the Springer Group withdrew its demolition request when the matter went before the heritage

committee in order to allow for further consultation with city officials. The committee, meantime, is working to formally attach a heritage value designation to the 101-109 Princess Street buildings, which would give the city more control over how they are repurposed. The property at 101-109 Princess Street is “listed” on the City’s Heritage Property Register but does not have an associated designation under Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, according to Hurdle. Dossett, who has painted many of Kingston’s heritage scenes, believes that while the redevelopment will showcase the 19th century façade on the second and third floors, the ground level will be too modern. “It is not enough to preserve individual buildings that are historic; we must preserve the historic integrity of the streetscape. If you look at cities around the world where tourists flock and artists gather to paint or to take photographs, these cities have much stronger control on heritage so that the entire street is preserved.” It would be better to leave the buildings as is, ugly stucco and all, so they can be redeveloped in a more sensitive manner down the road, he added. “I strongly urge council to designate these properties so that they will not be demolished and that the city will have a say in how the development will be done.” The existing three-storey buildings have seen many commercial uses over the past 165 years. They are currently used by Gallery of Fine Art, Chumleighs and the now-vacant site of Tweed & Hickory. The developer has not indicated a timeline for the revised bank development plans, but council could deal with the heritage designation issue as early as Aug. 11.

Dry stones represent history, both old and new, for Amherst Islanders By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News – Andrea Cross always admired the old stone walls on Amherst Island, but until a couple of years ago she never knew just how special and historical these walls truly are. “I read an article talking about the large number of walls on the island and their similarity to traditional and historical Irish Dry Stone Walls,” said Cross, now a board member of Dry Stone Canada. “I realized that we
had something really special here that we needed to promote.” Since then, Cross has worked with Dry Stone Canada to create the Amherst Island Dry Stone Initiative, an initiative that aims to document the existing walls, build new walls and structures using historical methods and promote the tourism of these walls to the rest of the world. Earlier this month the Amherst Island Dry Stone Initiative received support from the province through a $73,000 Tourism Development Fund Grant for the Dry Stone Walling

Amherst Island is the site of the largest known concentration of historic Irish dry stone walls in Canada, many close to 200 years old. This initiative will celebrate Irish heritage, create local jobs, launch a new fourseason cultural heritage, and boost local tourism year-round. “The money is great for the initiative and really attracting attention to these historic sites on the island,” said Cross. “We are working hard to promote the initiative and as part of that we are holding the first Amherst Island Irish-Canadian International Dry Stone Festival this fall.” The festival takes place Sept. 25-27 and to launch the Initiative, two new permanent legacy dry stone structures will be built by world-renowned wallers. Night time is the right time to visit Kingston’s museums By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Events – Kingston is a city filled with museums and historic sites, but visiting them all can be a challenge, especially when most have limited hours. Luckily, the Kingston association of museums, art galleries and historic sites, understands this dilemma and for the second time this summer they are hosting ‘Museums at Night’. On August 6, 14 museums and historical sites across the city will be open from 5 to 8 p.m., giving many Kingstonians an opportunity to explore and enjoy all that the city has to offer. “So many of our small museums don’t have a lot of staff so they are often only open nine to five during the day,” explained Mark Badham, curator of the Miller Museum of Geology at Queen’s. “We hear from a lot of visitors that it would be great to have evening hours.” Throughout the year, Badham sees a fair amount of traffic from school groups and from camp groups during the summer, but he sees this event as an opportunity for more parents to come in and check out the dinosaurs and rare gems. “It’s not exactly ‘Night at the Museum’ but I think it is interesting,” said Badham. “I think a lot of parents would find it interesting too and hopefully we can attract some new fans.” This is the second time that ‘Museums at Night’ has been offered this summer. The first was July 9, and while turnout was good the first time around, Badham hopes it will be bet-

ter this time. “We had about 175 people through the different sites and that isn’t too bad for these small sites,” he said. “Sites aren’t offering extra programming or anything out of the ordinary, we just want to gage the response and see how many people have an appetite for events like this.” This time the Window Art Gallery and the Agnes Etherington Art Centre will be added to the list and will join 12 other sites including Modern Fuel, Union Gallery, Murney Tower, Museum of Health Care, Bellevue House, Kingston City Hall, Royal Military College of Canada Museum, Penitentiary Museum, Frontenac County Schools Museum, Pump House Steam Museum, Miller Museum of Geology and the MacLachlan Woodworking Museum. Admission to the museums isn’t free, but the association has done everything possible to mitigate costs. “The reason we chose a Thursday evening is because the McLachlan Woodworking Museum and the Pump House Steam Museum have free admission on that night,” said Badham. “The rest of the sites are typically admission by donation or free already and the only museum that has a set admission is Bellevue BUY GET House.” $14.36 50% $14.37-$17.10 $21.95 Attendees of the event will also ONE beONEable to OFF use the Kingston Trolley to get around; the Save 20% I Reg. $17.95 Reg. $15-$35 Save 40% I Reg. $22.75-$28.50 Save 63% I Reg Trolley will operate on extended hours and Mark Badham is the curator at the Miller Museum of Geology at Queen’s and chair of the Choose from select TIG Choose from Sebastian Shaper and Choose from select AG Curl products Choose from select DESIGNLINE will go by nine of the 14 museum locations. marketing committee with the Museums Association inPlus Kingston. New service allows seniors to stay independent and eat healthier at home By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News – When Kate Cochrane’s father fell ill a few years ago, she began searching for nutritious meals that catered to his medical needs. “He needed a lower sodium diet and that was fine when I was cooking for him, but there were times when I wasn’t around and it was hard for him,” said Cochrane. Cochrane began looking for meal delivery services that could help and she quickly discovered Heart at Home Meals, a service that makes, delivers and unpacks frozen home-style meals, soups and desserts aimed at seniors. Cochrane’s father tried the meals and loved them, however there was one catch. “We couldn’t get them in Kingston on a regular basis because there was no franchise in the area,” she explained. “I contacted the provider to see how we could get them more regularly and we decided to open a franchise of our own.” Now, after a year of set up and hard work, Cochrane and her partner, Wes Mulder, have launched a franchise of Heart to Home Meals in Kingston. The process was long, but Cochrane is happy to finally have this valuable service in the city. “It is especially convenient for seniors who are living on their own; it can be hard to cook for one person,” she said. “We offer low-sodium meals, texture friendly meals and most of the meals are diabetic friendly, aside from some desserts.”
In 2011 there were 5 million people over the age of 65 living in Canada and by the year 2031 this number will nearly double to 9.6 million. “These people want to stay in their home and they just need a bit of help to do that,” said Cochrane. “With our service, we can come right into clients houses and put the meals in the freezer for them. It is very easy.” Heart to Home Meals meets individual dietary needs and customers can choose from a range of more than 150 different items using a menu catalogue. On average, meals cost $6.50 and that includes taxes and delivery. Meals can be easily heated in the oven or microwave and menu options change every six months. Although Cochrane’s Heart to Home Meals’ delivery service is based in Kingston, it will serve seniors across the region from Cobourg to Cornwall. Most deliveries can be made in a few days, but most clients prefer to set up weekly, scheduled deliveries. So what has the response been like so far in Kingston? “We’ve been open for about four weeks now and people are learning about our service and responding really well,” said Cochrane. “I’m excited to get the word out there more and get busier.” Cochrane has a very loyal customer in her own father, but she also receives business advice from him too. “My dad ran Cochrane’s groceries

Kingston native explores human emotion through children’s books By Hollie Pratt-Campbell hpratt-campbell@perfprint.ca
News - Through her work as a marriage and family therapist, Allie MacPhail hears many stories about human struggles. “Everyone has a story, everyone goes through pain at some point in their life, whether they’ve been there or will be there,” she notes. “How you handle that pain in your own story is a really big priority and a passion for me.” MacPhail is also a writer, so she decided to explore these themes through children’s books with emotional messages. Her first book, ‘I Can’t Sleep’ deals with a young boy who suffers from anxiety at night; with the help of his parents, he finds a way to alleviate it so he can successfully fall asleep. ‘Sammy the Snail’ tells of a snail whose village is destroyed by a storm and learns to cope with his grief by turning it into art. “I love writing because it gets things out for me, it helps me process things,” says MacPhail. “And then when I realized that the stories, especially I Can’t Sleep, were so much fun, I thought they could be quite helpful for anyone. An adult has actually approached me and said you know, ‘I need a bag to put my worries in too’.” MacPhail is originally from Kings-
ton, however currently resides in the Bahamas where her husband, Bryn, works as a pastor. “It’s hot,” she laughs when asked how she likes living there. “It’s actually quite fun…[and eyeopening] because we get to interact at the level of the locals. Everyone thinks of Nassau as a destination because it’s so beautiful, and it really is. But behind the scenes, where my husband in particular gets to work for the church, there are a lot of kids and families in desperate need.” She notes, for example, there you’ll often see locals who have no running water juxtaposed with the tourists on their million dollar yachts. “To be able to work hand in hand with these people [and help] is amazing,” she says. “I love it.” MacPhail has had a number of opportunities to visit Bahaman schools to discuss the writing process and the concept of telling a story with local children. “I’ve done book tours, in Nassau that have included probably about 20 different schools -that doesn’t seem like a lot but it is for the island. I got to educate them about how do you write, how do you tell your story, how do you deal with emotions.” She explains that these sessions are especially rewarding considering literacy in the Bahamas is not at an ideal level.
“When these kids realize that they are a;; authors also because they have their own stories and they start writing, it’s such a great feeling.” MacPhail also welcomes the opportunity to visit Canadian schools via Skype. “It’s not as active but it’s still really fun to be with the kids and hear their questions and to read the book over the Internet,” she remarks. So what’s next for MacPhail? Will there be more books? “I have plenty of ideas but I’m not sure if they’re going to make it to paper,” she says. “I always have stories going on and I just love the writing process so if [an idea] ends up being decent enough it might go into a book. The hard part is finding illustrators because that is not my thing.” For now, she’s happy to continue her work as a therapist in the Bahamas. “It’s an honour for me to hear people’s stories,” she says. “Writing these [books] has been really helpful - not just for my clients, but also for me to be able to process things. There’s hard stuff in everyone’s life, including mine. Everyone has pain and anxiety in their world that has to be talked about and understood in a different way.” To learn more about MacPhail, or to order one of her books, visit www. tenac Islands that Transport Canada revert to their former interpretation, which included carrying passengers on trips with dangerous goods. It was the length of the trip from Kingston to Wolfe Island that brought about the unwelcome restrictions, which led to long ferry waits and much frustration. The Township sought the assistance of MPP Sophie Kiwala and MP Ted Hsu in this matter. The new certificate under the federal Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act will allow one dangerous goods tanker at a time to be transported on any regularly scheduled ferry trip. This one tanker per trip policy also applies to the now empty but un-purged dangerous goods mobile unit on the return trip. It is important to note that dangerous goods carriers will be accepted on a first-come, firstserved basis. An earlier communique noted a crew training review for flammable gas detectors and portable foam firefighting equipment in advance of the welcome change.

Creator of light and dark art
Ashlee Earle creates mesmerizing art. Some works, like her portraits, are intensely real; many of her paintings meander amidst layers of surreal. Like many artists, she’s quietly reflective. “For me, I think I can speak in a different way through art,” she said. “Art is like a second language for me. It can mean different things and is not necessarily like linear speech. In art, you can interpret things you can’t explain with worlds. My friends think it’s funny when they are trying to explain things and I explain it by drawing it out.” Oddly, the first time I saw her in action it was as a different kind of artist. She was being examined
for an advanced karate belt. Still, amidst the punches and pummeling, there was a gentle artistry to her work when performing karate kata, an intricate choreographed set of movements of a specific martial arts’ style and system of fighting. In Ashlee’s case, it’s Goju Ryu karate, practised at The Academy of Martial Arts at 851 Princess Street. Later I saw her visual art work. Stunning. You can check out her art at facebook.com/ashleesArt. There are folders of traditional art, sketches, and Digital/Graphic/3D Art. There’s a light playfulness to much of her work. There’s also a dark side, a beautiful, near-Gothic darkness. After looking at the almost naive innocence in some of Ashlee’s work, there’s a bit of emotional whiplash when coming upon a piece like Frantic Shock, which features blood dripping from fingers, bones breaking through fingertips. Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy, the godfather of Gothic rock, would love this artist.
As for the innocence in Ashlee’s art, it’s not really naivete; it’s more along the lines of Lou Reed singing: “Just a perfect day. You made me forget myself. I thought I was someone else, someone good.” In other words, there’s always a twist or a catch. Ashlee says she painted Frantic Shock on the streets of downtown Kingston. “I wanted to paint and wasn’t having inspiration,” she said. “At school when I was painting, there were people around me. I used a lot of art energy on the play (Pirates of Penzance). I work better around people. I think that’s why I went downtown to paint. It’s not necessarily the contact, but the presence of people.” She explained that Frantic Shock was inspired by a dream less graphic than the painting. “In the dream, I hit my fingers so hard that my bones broke through the tips of my fingers. though it wasn’t bloody. The piece is called Frantic Shock because, in the dream, I was freaking out and yell-

lee sat, looking relaxed and mellow, in a rocking chair in my studio. I discovered that Ashlee was responsible for the elaborate backdrop used in Regi’s Pirates of Penzance production. This is an artist with diverse skills. Born in Newfoundland into a military family, Ashlee’s moved around a lot with stints in Newfoundland, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Williamsburg and Kingston. “It’s hard to get used to,” she said. “But it’s nice being able to see different places.” She spent three of her high school years in Kingston at Regi. She decided to do the extra victory lap year. “I wanted to save for Algonguin and get some experience.” That experience included a co-op placement at COGECO TV. She said that, although it’s a TV station, there’s a similar feeling in the setting to what one finds in an animation studio. She also completed two dual-credit (high school and college) courses at St. Lawrence Collegein media and the arts and film studies. In her past year at Regi, she studied painting, for which she received the CAPPA Award.
to be serious all the time,” she said. “But I think life is more than studying and thinking all the time. Art breaks those boundaries. It gives people a different perspective and introduces a whole different world. It’s the same for any talent, once you’ve got a passion.” Ashlee Earle sells custom paintings, drawings and portraits and will take commissions from buyers. Don’t expect to obtain some of her early work and creations you see on her Facebook page. “I’m reluctant to get rid of ones I’ve done,” she said. “I currently do commissions for portraits of people and pets, and some landscapes,” she said. Her long-term goal is to work as an animation artist. “Working in a studio like Disney would be cool, but so would a smaller studio like Triggerfish.” She’s more concerned about her art than the day-to-day grind that worries many people. “I think it’s funny that people think you have to own a house,” she said. “That’s not where creativity and happiness come from.” You can reach Ashlee Earle through email at artbyashlee@gmail.com. In the autumn, she’s headed to Ottawa’s Algonquin College. She hopes to spend a year in that program and then head to Humber College in Toronto. “Algonquin looks like a good place to start,” she said. “They focus on 2D and 3D and don’t seem to prefer one or the other. Humber is more 3D. Algonquin is more cartoony; I’ve watched a demo reel from Humber, and it’s more CGI.” As for her other arts interests—the martial arts—Ashlee began her karate training in 2009. “I saw a girl from my class walking down the street in her karate uniform and she asked me to come to one of the classes,” said Ashlee. “I’m still doing karate. I like the flexibility. It felt like something I’d like to do, like art. In free sparring, it’s kind of creative thinking of strategies.” One of the paintings she brought to show me was based on a dream she had as a little girl. “I was nine years old,” she said. “It was also inspired by Dali. The concept of the ice, raft and penguin is based on the dream; the shapes by Dali. Dreams are like little movies in my head.” She remembers that particular dream because it recurred. Her art has always been part of her life. “I think a lot of people think they need
FARM BOY ARTISAN
Favorite fair foods County fair season has arrived, and that means there will be rides and games galore. While many people are drawn to fairs by the entertainment, just as many are willing to stand in line for the unique and tasty foods that seem to embody fair and carnival fun. If it can be served on a stick or deep fried, chances are you can find it at a fair. Everything from chocolate-dipped bacon to deep-fried butter may turn up on fair stand menus. The following are some of the more coveted foods revelers can expect to find at their local fairs and carnivals. • Funnel cake: Funnel cake and it’s close cousin, zeppole, have long been fair favorites. Topped with powdered sugar, funnel cakes can be pulled apart and shared with others. • Corn dogs: Corn dogs are essentially hot dogs on a stick that have been covered in cornmeal and fried. Like funnel cakes, corn dogs have become so synonymous with fairs and carnivals that few people have ever enjoyed them anywhere outside of their local fairgrounds. • French fries: French fries are a favorite at fairs, and carnival-goers can choose from savory shoestrings to hearty steak-cut potato chunks. • Cotton candy: What fair would be complete without a cotton candy vendor? Cotton candy is made by heating up granulated sugar until it is liquified enough to be blown into thin threads. Those threads are collected and wound into a sweet treat that
is loved by kids and adults alike. • Pie: Fair-goers are likely to happen upon a pie-eating contest or pie-tasting tent. Many prefer to indulge in a piece of pie while at the fair, preferring such treats to sweeter, heavier desserts. • Corn on the cob: Corn on the cob is proof that carnivals and fairs provide some healthy fare for customers in addition to the many decadent treats on display. Corn on the cob is most popular in corn-producing areas and can be the ideal complement to burgers and other fair foods. • Anything on a stick: Each year fair vendors experiment with culinary oddities that can be served on a stick. One day it may be skewered pork chops and the next a sleeve of cookies. Those who want the full fair experience should consider trying something served on a stick.

Lyme disease – serious, preventable, and treatable
R0013377004-0806
Nova Health Naturopathic Centre www.novahealthnaturopathic. com/about-nova-health-clinic-and-doctors in Kingston, Ontario brings our attention to the seriousness of contracting Lyme disease. This disease, which continues to find its way into the news, is fortunately both preventable and treatable. Lyme disease is an infection that is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. In Canada and the continental U.S., it is transmitted by the bites of two types of deer ticks: the western blacklegged tick (on the west coast) and the blacklegged tick (in other regions). Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne illness in North America and Europe. It is an inflammatory disease that is characterized by rash, headache, fever and, later, possible arthritis and neurological and cardiac disorders. If left untreated, Lyme disease can last for months or years. It is important that you see a healthcare provider immediately if you develop symptoms of Lyme disease. Lyme disease can be acute or chronic depending on the duration of the infection. Acute (severe, short term) Lyme disease can be eradicated if treatment is received within six to eight weeks of the infection. Chronic (long term) infections can require extended use of antibiotics for a duration of several months to two years or more. Symptoms: Initial symptoms can vary between people and can therefore be difficult to diagnose. Symptoms of Lyme disease may not appear for weeks after a bite. The first typical symptom is a large, reddish “bull’s-eye” rash – erythema migrans (EM) rash – that spreads on the skin. The rash might appear on different parts of the body as the infection spreads. Additional symptoms can include fatigue, fever and chills, headache, spasms or weakness, stiff neck, body aches, and swollen lymph nodes. Symptoms may be similar to those of the flu, but will last longer. In some cases, an affected person may develop cognitive dysfunction (such as brain fog or dizziness), nervous system disorders, arthritic symptoms (muscle and joint pain), and more rarely, heart problems. Diagnosis: Lyme disease can be difficult to diagnose because it is similar to other ailments, such as the flu. The one symptom that is unique to the disease is the bull’s-eye rash, but this symptom does not appear in all cases. If symptoms appear without the distinctive rash, then a detailed medical history is generally used, along with a physical exam and
laboratory tests to check for the presence of antibodies to B. burgdorferi. The Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation notes that some types of testing canlyme.com/just-diagnosed/testing/ such as the ELIZA (Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) test may not be reliable and can produce negative lab test results when results should be positive. Treatment: Lyme disease can often be treated with four weeks of administered antibiotics if addressed early. Longer term antibiotics may however be required depending on the symptoms and the time it took for the disease to be diagnosed. It is important to note that, in Canada, doctors who have treated chronic Lyme disease through long-term use of antibiotics have been reprimanded. Canadian doctors are not educated about chronic Lyme disease, nor are they allowed to treat chronic Lyme. Natural therapies are available to treat Lyme disease. Here too, it’s important to point out that such natural treatments should be determined and administered by a qualified doctor of naturopathic medicine. Prevention: Since the disease is passed through the bite of an infected tick, you must take measures to prevent tick bites. Ticks inhabit outdoor grassy and wooded areas. When outdoors, wear close-toed shoes, longsleeved shirts and pants, socks over pant legs, and other appropriate clothing. As well, use insect repellant that contains DEET or a more natural repellent containing Geranium oil. Information about natural tick repellents can be found all over the internet and are safer. Learn more about the prevention of Lyme disease (www.healthycanadians.gc.ca/diseasesconditions-maladies-affections/disease-maladie/lyme/prevention-eng. php) from the Government of Canada website. If you suspect you may have been infected with Lyme disease, or have been struggling with symptoms of the disease, contact www.novahealthnaturopathic.com/contact-us Nova Health Naturopathic Centre in Kingston, Ontario by calling 613-546-9995 or email. info@novahealthnaturopathic.com. The clinic is operated by Dr. Kimberly Oxbro, a certified Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine who also holds a Master’s degree in Pharmacology. Quite a bit of ceremony involved in the day of thrashing Regardless what it said in the dictionary, everyone at Northcote called it “thrashing”. Threshing was a foreign word to the farmers who gathered at the homesteads this time of year to separate the grain from the chaff. To us five kids, the day was almost as good as going off to the Renfrew Fair. We didn’t go to school that day. Every hand was needed on the farm. Chores would have to be done before the sun was up on thrashing day, and certainly breakfast over with and the kitchen made ready for 15 or 20 men Mother would be feeding at dinner. Neighbours came when their own chores
were out of the way, and they would gather in the barn yard, leaning on their wagons, smoking their pipes and passing the time until Mr. Briscoe with his team of horses pulling the big thrashing machine came through the gate. And then it was time. Teams of horses would bring in the sheaves from the fields, feed them into the big machine, coaxed into action, once bright red, but now faded from the elements. The noise was deafening as the thrasher chugged away under the blistering hot sun. My three brothers worked right alongside the men, and I, when I wasn’t pressed into service in the kitchen, pulled a chair up to the window, looking out into the barn yard, watching all our neighbours working as one. My sister Audrey had the job of keeping the granite pail of water filled to the brim, with shards of ice from the ice house floating on
top. One tin cup would serve all who wanted to stop for a cold drink of water. In the house, the kitchen would be beastly hot. All night the big haunch of beef would be cooking in the oven. The day before thrashing, Aunty who came each year to help, would have turned out 8 to 10 pies, and they would be on the bake table, already cut in four. All morning the kitchen buzzed with dinner preparations. The old pine table wouldn’t hold all the men, so three planks stretched across chair backs. The planks were covered with a thick quilt, and then sparkling white flour bag sheets, all to take care of the overflow. Every last plate, cup and saucer, and every piece of cutlery was spread out on the two tables, and it was my job to go outside and into the dark hole under the house which served as a cellar and was the bane of my existence, and bring up at

plates when it came time to dole out the pie. The dinner plates looked like they had been washed in soap and water, wiped clean with thick slices of bread. There was no loitering after the meal. Mr. Briscoe was the first to push his chair back from the table, and I could hear the thrashing machine roar into action, and the work began again. My three brothers and Father had barely enough energy to do the chores afterwards. But the bags upon bags of grain stacked inside the barn, would once again show what it meant to live in a tight community where farmers depended on each other. That, simply, was the way things were done back then. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? least four different kinds of pickles from the swinging shelves. There was little formality back then. The full jars were put two to a table, with a big serving spoon at each. By the time the CPR clock struck noon, the thrashing machine was closing down. Mother had put two wash basins at the back door, with a new bar of Ivory soap. Each man splashed water on his face, gave it a rub with the huck towel, and handed it off to the next in line. They were far from clean when they piled into the kitchen, found a place to sit, and awaited the heaping platters and bowls of food. There were creamed potatoes, carrots, turnips, cabbage salad, jugs of gravy, and of course, platters of hot beef and cold sliced roasted pork. Two plates of fresh bread and butter sat at either ends of the two tables, with Mother and Audrey at the ready to refill the bowls. No one bothered with clean

Aliens in form of 1980s video game characters serve up plenty of laughs By Mark Haskins
Pixels is the first Adam Sandler movie I’ve wanted to see in a long time. It was also the first Adam Sandler movie in a long time that didn’t disappoint. In 1982 NASA launched a probe into space. It contained examples of human achievement and culture in the hopes that if it reached an alien race it would have an understanding of us. Included in that probe were video games. An alien race did find that probe, and completely misinterpreted it. In the present day a U.S. Air Force
a declaration of war, and they’ve come to our world to battle us at our own games. Naturally our best defenders are gamers from the ’80s. Sam brings in Ludlow ‘The Wizard’ Lamonsoff (Josh Gad), and they get the 1982 world video game champion, Eddie ‘The Fire Blaster’ Plant (Peter Dinklage), out of prison. Armed with technology created by Lt. Col. Violet Van Patton (Michelle Monaghan) the three fight real life versions on their favourite video games to save the world. You don’t walk into a movie like Pixels expecting it to make sense. You walk
However, all of these things put together are great excuses for some classic video game action, ’80s pop culture references, and a lot of laughs. What I like the most about this cast is how they go from wacky and outrageous one minute to saving the world the next. Michelle Monaghan takes charge as a Lt. Col. Patton and scores some laughs playing off of Sandler.
Josh Gad is hysterically funny as a conspiracy theory nut who is finally proven right. I’m not even sure where to begin with Peter Dinklage’s character except to say he is brilliant, and while it may be hard to imagine Kevin James as President I’d vote for him. Adam Sandler’s fondness for the ’80s makes him an ideal choice for this film. He’s also pretty good at playing
that likeable, nice-guy, everyman who’s thrust into an extraordinary situation. He gets the laughs, he gets the girl and he saves the day. I talked my wife in to seeing this film, and she hates Adam Sandler. This film didn’t change her mind, but she didn’t hate it. High praise indeed. Mark Haskins’ column is a regular feature.
MOVIE: Pixels STARRING: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad, Michelle Monaghan and Peter Dinklage DIRECTOR: Chris Columbus RATING: PG base is attacked by what looks like a 1980s video game called Galaga. President Cooper (Kevin James) turns to the one person he knows can help – his best friend, and the 1982 runner-up in the world video game championships Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler). The aliens saw those video games as
in expecting to have fun, and Pixels is a lot of fun. Aliens attacking the Earth with 1980s video games like Centipede and Pac-Man doesn’t make sense. Defending the Earth with old video game champions doesn’t make a lot of sense. Kevin James as President of the United States is hard to wrap your head around.

Stunt rider Jarrett Pronk flies high over Kingston City Hall during a high-flying demonstration by Jason Thorne FMX motorcycle stunt team during the Kingston Show N Shine motorcycle show on July 25.
