Out with the old, in with the new: Demolition for new Scotiabank building approved By Bill Hutchins
News – Calling it making the best of a bad situation, city council has agreed to allow the demolition of a row of 19th century buildings in downtown Kingston. The four connected buildings, located at 101-109 Princess Street, will be torn down to make way for a new $6 million Scotiabank branch. Councillors voted 12-1 at their Sept. 1 meeting to issue a demolition permit to The Springer Group based on expert advice that the limestone blocks in the current 1840s building could not be salvaged. “It’s a very delicate situation. It’s a lovely old heritage building. The unfortunate part of it is what’s beneath the stucco is in really bad shape. It can’t be used, explained developer Bryon Springer. The buildings were covered in stucco sometime in the 1960s or ‘70s and about 3,000 nails were driven into the stones. “Pretty much all of the stone has been damaged and is not able to be reused. The heritage that was there before is now gone, Springer added. The developer unveiled plans to tear down the buildings, plus two Bluesman Joe Louis Walker performs for a jammed crowd in Kingston’s market square behind City Hall in the non-heritage buildings at 206 and headline performance of the Limestone City Blues Festival. them with the new banking centre. The redevelopment will feature glass and steel on the main floor while the upper two floors will be given a limestone-style appearance that will maintain some visual connections to the history of the corner. The development will also include 27 underground parking spaces for Scotiabank. The city spent several weeks working with the developer to determine whether any of the original stones could be saved or included in the new project before deciding on the demolition request. “It’s a very difficult situation, observed Coun. Jim Neill. “Under the ugly stucco lurks the heart of a heritage building. Councillors agreed that most visible traces to the history of the buildings at Princess and Wellington Streets are not worth preserving due to the “brutalist renovations of the past. In approving the demolition, the city and the developer have also agreed to a heritage easement that will retain some of the original features and scale in the redesigned building such as the windows and rooftop.

Kingston urges province to pull the plug on Hydro One sale Coun. Jeff McLaren voiced concerns that privatizing a large part of the utility through an IPO, an initial public offering that leads to a stock market listing, with little public oversight could lead to higher electricity bills, or worse. “We don’t want a Nortel Networks or Enron to run an essential business, he said, referring to the collapse of two former corporate giants. “That is a bad deal and very bad policy. Councillors voted unanimously on the motion to support the “continued operation of Hydro One as a publicly owned asset and that any sale of Hydro’s assets be “limited solely to the sale of other public bodies, such as Ontario municipally owned utilities. Copies of the motion will be sent

“There was no awkwardness, he said, while supporting the motion upon his return. Utilities Kingston president Jim Keech also weighed in on the debate, noting the province is also pressuring local distribution companies, like Kingston Hydro, to amalgamate or sell their assets to larger utilities. He believes the pressure is based on the premise that bigger is better. “I don’t think that’s been proven but it is the view of the province.

to Premier Kathleen Wynne, local MPP Sophie Kiwala, opposition party leaders and other municipalities. Coun. Neill chastised the provincial Liberals for not openly campaigning on its hydro plans in the last Ontario election in order to give voters more notice. Council was originally supposed to vote on the motion last month, but agreed to hold off while Mayor Paterson led a Kingston delegation to lobby provincial cabinet ministers for infrastructure funding for the third bridge crossing, airport expansion and transit projects. The mayor said opposing Hydro’s sale while asking for the funding would’ve put him in a difficult situation. He thanked council for waiting.

News – City council has sent a strong message to the Ontario government: Don’t sell Hydro One. Kingston has joined the growing list of municipalities to oppose the pending privatization of the giant public utility. The Liberal government has said it intends to sell shares of Hydro to raise billions of dollars to help finance badlyneeded municipal infrastructure projects. The irony of opposing Hydro’s sell-off while seeking a share of the infrastructure funding wasn’t lost on council. “There’s very much a conflict connected with Hydro and the need for infrastructure money, observed Mayor Bryan Paterson.
But Coun. Jim Neill, who introduced the anti-Hydro sale motion Sept. 1, insisted the utility must remain under public control. He fears it will set the stage for higher electricity rates that will impact everyone, especially small business owners and those on fixed incomes. “Why are we privatizing something that all citizens of Ontario already own? he asked. Coun. Neill also pointed to a recent Environics poll that suggested 81 per cent of Kingston residents oppose the notion of Hydro’s privatization. “I think 81 per cent of Kingstonians deserve to be heard. The fact that the government won’t allow the provincial auditor or hydro ombudsman to have any input or oversight after the utility’s sale is troubling, he added.

Local pharmacy opens travel clinic after KFL&A Public Health’s closes By Hollie Pratt-Campbell hpratt-campbell@perfprint.ca
News - As of Sept. 1, there is no more travel clinic at KFL&A Public Health – but that doesn’t mean you still can’t find a wealth of information on how you need to prepare medically for travel right here in Kingston. Suzanne Kerr, owner and pharmacist at DrugSmart Pharmacy on Queen’s campus, has been preparing to open a travel clinic at her pharmacy for over a year, becoming certified through the International Society of Travel Medicine and teaming up with internationally renowned travel doctor Jay Keystone and Julie Bridson, a local nurse who spent many years at the Public Health clinic. Kerr notes that people often underestimate the importance of educating themselves on how to properly prepare for travel. “Before you go travelling there
are a lot of things that you need to think about with regards to your health and safety,”she says. “It’s more than just getting the shots that you need that are on a list.” Outside of North America, Western Europe and Australia, different standards related to health, animal control or even traffic can all affect how a traveller should prepare; moreover, Kerr emphasizes it’s also important to consider a person’s individual medical history or even family medical history – things that staff travel clinics will examine comprehensively if needed. “[Needs] can also change depending on the particular area that you’re going to - what altitude it’s at, etc. there are so many things. Also what you’re doing, whether you’re doing aid work or going on a cruise - it’s all so different.” She adds that it’s important to remember even those travelling to luxurious, five-star resorts in places like the Caribbean need to be mind-
ful of certain health hazards. “Lots of North American people go to these and even though the standards are super high, they might not realize that in fact there is some risk of, for example, Hepatitis A. That’s not a routine vaccination that we give in Canada because it’s not something you’re going to get here.” Sometimes, countries even require people to show paperwork confirming they’ve had a certain vaccination to enter. For example, some people might be surprised to learn that if they’re on a cruise that travels to Trinidad and Tobago then Venezuela, they will need to show proof that they’ve had their yellow fever vaccination before entering Venezuela. “You don’t
want to be surprised by that type of thing when you get to the border,” Kerr notes. She’s confident the DrugSmart Pharmacy travel clinic will provide an excellent replacement for the one at KFL&A. “As far as the service you get, it would be practically the same considering we even have the same staff.” Dr. Keystone, who is very well respected in the travel medicine field, will serve as medical director. He’s drawn up guidelines for the clinic and will be on hand to review any
complicated questions. “We’re very lucky to have him,” Kerr says. “He was the first person I looked to when I was thinking of training in travel medicine.”In addition, clients will be able to book appointments online through the DrugSmart Pharmacy website; they can also bill their drug plans directly for vaccinations as opposed to paying the cost upfront, as was the case at the KFL&A clinic. DrugSmart Pharmacy is located at 284 Earl Street, in the same building as the Queen’s Athletic and Recreation Centre.

KEDCO house call: Agency gets invite to appear before council this month News – The city’s embattled economic development office will get its first public opportunity to address community criticism about the need for greater transparency and accountability. Kingston Economic Development Corporation (KEDCO) representatives have been asked to appear before the next council meeting on Sept. 15 to present details of their forthcoming internal review process. Mayor Bryan Paterson says his formal invitation motion, unanimously approved Sept. 1, is not a demand for information. “We’re calling it an invite,” he noted of the request. But the mayor says he also recognizes KEDCO could face some tough questions from councillors. “We all know there’ve been a number of concerns that have been raised over the last nine months and that there’ve recently been a number of big changes within the organization. This is an opportunity for them to appear before council to let us know what their thinking is and also to let the community know,” said Paterson, who also serves on the KEDCO board. The city-funded agency that promotes tourism and economic development receives about $2.7 million tax dollars a year. It has faced public and political scrutiny over whether it’s providing good value for the money it receives. Coun. Adam Candon, who has openly questioned the ratio of public funding KEDCO receives compared with other municipalities, welcomes the chance to get answers. He hopes to move beyond the finger pointing of the past. “They’re listening to a lot of the responses coming out of the community. That’s the best dialogue to have, instead of the back and forth with ‘I’m right, you’re right.’” The mayor suggested KEDCO
has hired experts to help it address the criticism during the upcoming council briefing. “What you’re going to see at this presentation is some analysis presented by a third party that’s going to compare what our investment is to KEDCO versus other municipalities.” The mayor adds it’s important for KEDCO to follow the same strategic priorities that have been determined by council. “Our number one strategic priority is creating a smart economy, so if we want to build a local economy
we need to be aligned with KEDCO - make sure we’re all on the same page.” The economic development office, which operates at arm’s length from council, has already announced plans to undertake a detailed review of its operations. A panel is expected to be appointed this fall, including members of council and the community, to look for ways to improve the agency’s mandate. KEDCO says it also plans to reduce its annual budget request from City Hall in 2016.
The review follows the resignations of long-time CEO Jeff Garrah and tourism director Rob Carnegie. While both are departing for different reasons, it’s expected KEDCO will hold off on filling the highprofile positions while the review is underway. The mayor says KEDCO has achieved some big successes recently including the promise of new jobs and big manufacturing investments by paper shredder Iron Mountain and food processor Frulact. But he also believes there
needs to be improved lines of communication with council and the community. “One of the major issues has been communication – how to communicate the information that’s coming to the KEDCO board to the broader community.” Coun. Candon is encouraged with the agency’s willingness to improve dialogue with the new council. “It certainly seems as though they listened and they’re to make changes accordingly, which is a positive thing.”

EDITORIAL
September sadness Back to school – these three words used to make me very happy. I loved everything about going back to school myself. I loved supply shopping, clothes shopping, meeting new teachers and learning new things, but as someone who is not going back to school this year, I loathe September. I hate the traffic, craziness and busyness that come with September. It is like a magical switch flicks when the calendar turns to September and we all go from relaxed, laid-back summer attitudes to angry, manic, crazy people rushing around. I know that September means a schedule change for many people, but it seems that none of us really know how to make this transition in a logical way. Parents are rushing around with their kids and school buses are still learning their routes and taking their sweet time doing it. Traffic in general just increases
exponentially in September and as someone who commutes into Kingston from the Sydenham area daily, this can be very frustrating and time consuming. School buses are particularly frustrating. If I get caught behind one on Sydenham Road I can guarantee my commute will take at least an additional 10 minutes and that is so frustrating. Logically I know that if I leave the house a bit earlier I can bypass this situation, but I really don’t want to modify my own schedule for a school bus. Craziness also comes in the form of retail stores and malls in September. I have been avoiding Costco and WalMart like the plague for the past few weeks and I will continue to do so until the end of September. These stores were empty for most of the summer and it was blissful, but now they are filled with kids and parents desperately trying to find whatever they need as fast as they can so they too can avoid the craziness. All of this seems to be amplified in a city like Kingston because along with all of the craziness of kids going back to elementary and secondary school we have a university thrown in for even more fun. Driving through Queen’s,

as unfortunately I have to every day to drop off Korey and pick him up, is an absolute nightmare in September. In the first few weeks you have students moving in, people reuniting after the summer and of course frosh and all of their crazy activities. At certain times it feels like you are driving through a circus, especially when you see people dressed in costume and dyed purple. I understand all of this is to build school spirit and get students excited for the coming year, but for many of them all of this excitement leads to a complete lack of concern for their safety. Perhaps Queen’s could work in a frosh activity to teach frosh how to cross the street properly or about cycling rules? I know that would help me out a lot. On top of all this, September means the inevitable end of summer and I am not ready to let go of it just yet. We had such a long winter this year and I feel like summer just flew by. I really do love fall, but I would not object to another month of summer right now. Perhaps we’ll get lucky and September will be unseasonably warm this year – maybe that will make it a little more tolerable.

In Our Opinion
What you need to know to avoid being told you can’t vote this election day Editorial - We are still over a month away from the Canada’s federal election, but we feel it’s important to urge our readers to start planning to vote early, as the government’s recent passage of the sweeping, controversial Fair Elections Act could mean some people might be surprised to learn they are ineligible to vote when they arrive at the polls.  Here’s a list of some helpful things to know to make sure you’re prepared with what you need on voting day: 1) You cannot use your voter information card as eligible I.D. as in years passed. You’ve been warned. There are 40 different kinds of eligible ID, a list of which can be found on the Elections Canada website, elections.ca.  2) It is simplest to have government issued photo-identification on your person proving your current address, such as a driver’s license or your OHIP Health Card.  3) If your government issued photo identification does not prove your current address, you must have at least two of pieces of other ID, at least one of which must have your current address on it. These can include your birth certificate, passport, Indian status card, hospital card, student identity card, credit card, debit card, bank statement, personal cheque, or utility bill. Visit elections.ca for the full list.  4) If you don’t have any such identification that can attest to your current residential address, you can have someone in the same voting district who does have all the required documentation agree to sign an oath or residency for you. For example, your neighbour will usually be in the same voting district. You can verify this information with your voter ID cards. But, the catch here is that you still have to present some form of ID to vote. Co-signers can only sign one other voter’s oath, which is subject to mandatory audit, and any false declaration will result in a $50,000 fine.  5) What if you are a student living in residence, currently residing at a senior’s residence, live on a First Nations reserve or are of no-fixed address? Don’t forget your “Letters of Confirmation of Residence. They will be absolutely crucial in this election. If you can, print the letter of confirmation of residence form found at elections.ca and ask your residence administrator (RA) to complete it and sign it. They will also accept a letter from the administrator that is printed on the letterhead of the establishment. When you go vote, bring the letter and a second piece of ID with your name.  Also, please don’t forget that you can vote early. The Canada Elections Act (justice laws website) says that advance polls must be held the 10th, 9th, 8th and 7th days before an election day. As a result, advance polls coincide with Thanksgiving weekend, which runs from Friday, Oct. 9 to Monday, Oct. 12. Your voter information card should tell you where the polling station for advance polling will be. You can also call up your local Elections Canada office. There’s no better way beat the potential chaos at polling stations on Oct. 19 than to get it out of the way with before the big day. Once again, we urge you to get all your voting ducks in a row now so you’re not met with a frustrating surprise on Oct. 19. . s !DVERTISING RATES AND TERMS AND CONDITIONS ARE ACCORDING TO

News – It’s a reign date that Kingston wouldn’t have missed. The City of Kingston held a special ceremony Sept. 9 to commemorate the latest milestone of Queen Elizabeth II, a record of longevity that may never be surpassed. “It’s certainly something to be commemorated,” noted Mayor Bryan Paterson. On Wednesday, Sept. 9, Her Majesty officially became the longest-reigning British monarch at 63 years and seven months, surpassing the reign of her great-greatgrandmother Queen Victoria, who died in 1901 after ruling the United Kingdom for 23,226 days, 16 hours and 23 minutes, according to Buckingham Palace. “It’s certainly history in the making,” said Marlene McCracken, chairman of the Kingston branch of The Monarchist League of Canada. While exact details of the civic ceremony weren’t available at press time, it was believed the city would hold a public ceremony in Confederation Park at 11 a.m. Sept. 9 featuring speeches, the playing of God Save the Queen, O Canada, a civic proclamation read by the Town Crier, and the display of royal-themed artifacts from the civic collection in City Hall. “There are going to be celebrations across the world on Sept. 9 and here in Kingston we’re going to join in and have a commemoration ceremony in front of City Hall. We’ll be doing our part to mark the historic occasion,” said Paterson.

Councillors say recreating history is the best compromise they can get. “It’s good faux architecture, but looks better than what’s there now,” said Coun. Neill of the proposed new building. “There’s nothing wrong with doing that as long as it’s done tastefully,” added Coun. Kevin George. It’s not the first heritage-style building in the downtown to be rebuilt with modern materials to reflect historic architecture. A Shoppers Drug Mart and a Tim Hortons restaurant, damaged by fires, were rebuilt to resemble heritage buildings of the past. “What we have before us is the best possible way forward,” said Mayor Bryan Paterson of the Scotiabank project. It was also praised by the downtown business association. “The proposal will blend with the look and the feel of the downtown,” said Doug Ritchie, the association’s managing director. Council’s demolition vote went against a recommendation from the heritage committee, which urged the
buildings get a formal heritage designation in a last-ditch bid to save them from the wrecking ball. Coun. Peter Stroud was the lone opponent of the demolition. He argued the Princess Street buildings, constructed at the same time as historic City Hall in the 1840s, can be saved and re-purposed into a modern banking centre if there’s a will to do so. “They were horribly mutilated but it can be restored. It can be done but the tenants don’t want to do that.” A Scotiabank representative told council the bank wants to remain in the downtown, and the new banking centre will lead to the closure of two existing downtown branches. “We have simply outgrown them,” said Scotiabank’s Paul Mills. He did not indicate how many employees will work in the consolidated branch. Springer, who’s been working on the Scotiabank project for 10 years, says the new building will benefit the downtown. “For Scotiabank to commit to a legacy project, building a new branch that’s 21,500 square feet is a tremendous boost to the downtown.” Demolition work is expected to begin this fall.
Kingston declares ‘reign’ date Sept. 9 to mark Monarchy milestone The Monarchist League of Canada, which requested the civic proclamation, says it’s fitting for the Limestone city to celebrate the lengthy rule of Elizabeth, given the city’s historic ties to royalty. In fact, many streets and plaques in the King’s Town district pay tribute to the city’s royal connections. Queen’s University was also established by Royal Charter from Queen Victoria in 1841. “We do have strong ties to the monarchy. I think we’re certainly proud of those roots and this is not an occasion that comes up every day. The fact she will become the longest serving monarch is really quite an accomplishment,” the mayor added. Queen Elizabeth was 25 years old when she came to the throne in 1952 as a young mother of two. Victoria inherited the throne at age 18 in 1837. McCracken believes there are many similarities between Victoria and Elizabeth, aside from their longevity. “They both had a strong sense of loyalty, duty and responsibility.” She says the 89 year old Queen also has family genes on her side. “Look at her mother, who lived to 101. I also hope to celebrate Her Majesty’s Sapphire Jubilee of 65 years on the throne.” McCracken has personally met the Queen twice, including one time in the 1970s while in a summer job at the library of Parliament in Ottawa. She had planned to follow Royal protocol to curtsy if the Queen got close enough to her during a walk-about in the Parliament buildings. But when the moment came, McCracken
forgot what to do. “I froze. My knees locked,” she recalled of the unforgettable experience. “The Queen kept looking at me even as she passed. She must have thought I was acting crazy.” However, years later, McCracken had a chance to write a passage in a book for the Queen’s 80th birthday and made it a point to apologize for her behaviour. “I was surprised the Queen actually read that book and she sent me a lovely letter thanking me for my loyalty to the Crown.” McCracken believes Elizabeth has no plans to retire and will hold the title for life, as long her health holds up. “Oh absolutely. Her motto is ‘I serve.’ There’s no way she’s going to give that up.” Which means, she adds, Prince Charles could be a King in waiting for a while longer.

Kingston Interval House marks 40 years By Hollie Pratt-Campbell hpratt-campbell@perfprint.ca
seen for many years.” She adds that more support and counselling services for children who experience violence are also essential. “We know that for girls who grow up in unhealthy relationships, that’s what they consider to be normal and what they will end up expecting to experience, and boys who grow up in unhealthy relationships also are role modelled in that way and will perpetuate violence.” Havery explains that more affordable housing is also essential to stopping the cycle of violence. Unfortunately, if women don’t have an affordable option, they often end up back with their abusive partner after leaving a shelter; to help minimize this, four years ago the agency opened Robin’s Hope, a second stage housing option that provides a solution for women who find themselves with no safe place to go when they leave Interval House. “It’s not the only answer but it’s a big obstacle and it’s a big service that we can provide. They can move from our shelter and into safe, affordable, rent-geared-to-income housing for a year, and they get support services while they’re there.” Moving forward, Havery hopes

News - Kingston Interval House has been providing sanctuary for local women and children experiencing violence for 40 years now. Over the decades, the organization has moved four times, and grown to meet the needs of those it serves in the community; what started out as a 10-bed shelter in 1975 now provides refuge for 25 residents. On Sunday, Sept. 13, everyone in community is invited to come out to McBurney Park to help mark this important milestone and learn more about what the organization does; the event will be held from 1 – 4 p.m., and include music, cake, kids’ activities, a few short speeches and more. “Lots of women have come through Interval House and have been able to move on to better lives without violence, which is excellent,” notes Kingston Interval House board chair Marilyn Birmingham. “And the staff is just amazing. There’s staff that have been there for a long time – I think the longest one has been here close to 30 years.” Indeed, current executive director Pam Havery began her career
at KIH as a frontline counsellor in 1987. Between then and now, she has seen a lot of changes not only to Interval House itself, but also to how violence against women is perceived by society. “When I started in this work, it was considered a private issue,” she explains. “People didn’t talk about it and other agencies didn’t always recognize that it was an issue.” While Havery doesn’t believe the severity of violence against women and children has lessened any, she does note that there’s not the same disbelief surrounding it as there was 40 years ago. “I think every one of us has a friend, a family member, ourselves or somebody we work with who is a woman and has experienced violence, or we know a child who has witnessed or experienced it. So I think we’re talking more about it. It’s not so much in the closet.” Still, there’s a long way to go when it comes to putting an end to violence against women and children in our society. “Shelters in our country need to be more than just adequately funded,” Havery says. “I think that they need to see annual increases from our government, which we’ve not
that with more financial assistance from the government, the agency can provide even more social housing to the women it serves: “[Shelters like Kingston Interval House] are critical for women and children to have a safe place to go when they leave an abusive relationship. But it’s very short term and if
a woman can create her own home and her own environment that’s safe and [affordable], she can begin to rebuild her life.” To learn more about Kingston Interval House, visit http://kingstonintervalhouse.com, and/or come out to the anniversary event on Sept. 13, which will take place rain or shine.

Martello Alley a welcome addition to Kingston’s arts scene By: Rob Mooy Reporter
Nestled among shops and restaurants in an alleyway off Wellington Street, art lovers will discover a unique enclave of artists displaying their creations for all to see. Along its historic limestone walls you will find a virtual cornucopia of paintings, photographs, sculptures and artwork. Many of these images feature Kingston’s historic landmarks, while others depict the varied artistic styles and mediums created by a dozen local artists. It was the creative vision of local artist David Dossett that led him to establish an artist collective in one of Kingston’s abandoned alleyways. “I’ve lived in Kingston all my life,” explains Dossett. “But, I also enjoy traveling and one of my favourite destinations is Quebec City. Here you will find rue du Trésor, home to one of the largest open-air galleries in Canada. All manor of artists display their creations along this quaint narrow alley that has become a renowned
attraction of this old city.” It was in Quebec that Dossett got the idea to open his Martello Alley at 203-B Wellington St. He wanted to create a unique gathering place where artists and art enthusiasts could interact with one another. “I’ve often thought that such a place would be a big hit in Kingston,” he says. “We didn’t seem to have anything like that in our city and I’ve found the perfect spot in our little alley off Wellington Street.” It didn’t take long for a dozen artists to come onboard, wanting to display their work so locals and tourists alike can find a souvenir, print or original artwork to complement their fine arts collections. “Our Martello Alley is geared towards tourists,” explains Dossett. “It’s unlike anything we have in our city. The art covers the entire alleyway. It’s not neatly organized like you would see in the typical gallery or museum, but arranged in a welcoming manner. You may even find artists painting or sketching new works as you tour our gallery.” ”Artists love this place because there are
so many areas where they can sit down and paint and be in a comfortable position with just the right amount of sun and/or shade, not to mention a nice cool breeze coming off the lake.” Dossett discovered one of his artists, who goes by the name Tully, working on a painting of the Sir John A Public House on King Street. “He loved my work and immediately invited me to show at the alley,” says Michael Pearson, who’s gone by the nickname Tully since kindergarten. “I think there is so much energy around this Alley. Artists are enthusiastic and many are pitching in to help get it off the ground. It’s an amazing space, so easy to feel inspired while spending time there and working on our art.” This talented artist enjoys having his work alongside so many creative people. Martello Alley is home to not only established artists, but also up-and-coming artists whose work you don’t often find in galleries. Tully has been
using his painting abilities to supplement his income for over two decades. Years ago, when not picking fruit in Penticton, BC, this artist began painting businesses and boats in Victoria, even a mural or two. “I have a lot of paintings out there of motels,” adds Tully who took fine arts at St Lawrence College, before they cut the program. “At the time I was juggling a job at a bread factory and being in a rock n roll band, so unfortunately I wasn’t able to complete the program, but I did get a lot out of it.” These days he excels at creating artwork depicting many of the Limestone City’s historic buildings and landmarks. “People have their favourite Kingston businesses and scenes,” he says. “So I do my best to try and capture that energy in my scenes. Most of my work is done on location. I enjoy meeting and chatting with people and get quite a bit of good feedback. Most people find it interesting just to see an artist working away.” Many locals and visitors have stopped
by the alley over the summer. “We’ve had people drop by who are visiting Kingston from as far away as Australia and New Zealand,” adds Dossett. “Even a couple of Parisians visiting Kingston said it reminded them of home.” When you venture down to the Martello Alley, prepare to have a smile that only great art and creativity can create. “It truly is reminiscent of, and inspired by, rue du Trésor, in Québec,” adds Tully. “This is an adventure with a wonderfully artistic ending, an artist collective offering eclectic works that are sure to brighten any day. From original art work to prints, sculptures and gift cards, Martello Alley is a space designed for any budget and any style/size of space” If you’re in the area drop by and see what’s new, meet an artist and have a cup of coffee. They would love to share their joy of art with you. Visit the collective on Facebook to discover more about the artists and what’s happening at Martello Alley.

Visiting speakers to recount dramatic N.B. fracking struggle Reporter
Events - Kingston will be visited by a cross-country speaking tour about the struggle to protect land in New Brunswick from fracking. Annie Clair and Miles Howe will speak in Kingston on Monday, Sept. 14 about protests which have seen huge public support as well as mass arrests and police raids. Annie Clair, Mi’kmaq land defender and grandmother from Elsipogtog First Nation, will describe her role in the events and discuss the traditional role of Mi’kmaq women in protecting the waters. She’ll be joined by journalist Miles Howe, who was often the only reporter on the scene and wrote a book about the struggle. Queen’s professor Robert Lovelace will introduce the pair in Kingston. “I’m really happy that we’re going to hear from Miles and Annie about the situation in New Brunswick, Lovelace said. “It’s a classic struggle over the right to protect land and to protect the relationship that human beings should have with land. In 2013, more than 100 New Brunswickers from a variety of backgrounds were arrested while protesting plans to fracture land in New Brunswick near Elsipogtog First Nation. Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing,
is an oil and gas extraction process in which pressurized fluids are pumped into the ground to crack open bedrock and drive out petroleum. Fracking has been blamed for poisoning groundwater around the world. “It’s not just Elsipogtog that’s important, said Clair. “It’s important everywhere. It all has to do with water. It’s not all about money. We cannot eat money or drink money. The speaking tour coincides with the release of Miles Howe’s new book: Debriefing Elsipogtog – The Anatomy of a Struggle. “I’ve read the book, said Lovelace, “and the book is a beautiful and strong account of activism in Canada and how communities can work together. And the challenging things too, the things that make it difficult for communities to work together. Howe explained: “Canada could learn a lot of from the people who came together in that small, rural, fairly impoverished part of New Brunswick. He warned: “For me the response we saw in Elsipogtog in terms of resistance and the way that the state came down and viciously attacked, it’s a template, a scenario that can replay itself anywhere across the country. Not all is bad, however, Howe adds: “It’s the story of corruption, of
co-option, of money, of what money Not just for aboriginal people, but for will do to people. But it’s also the everybody. Not just our children, for story of success, cooperation, and everybody’s children. coming together from a variety of diLovelace encouraged everyone verse communities. to come to the event on Sept. 14. Annie Clair has six charges and is soon headed to Moncton for trial. Clair, though, is not intimidated by the charges and urges others to come forward when land and water need to be defended. “They need to start standing up for Mother Earth. Conservative incumbent Reid hopes to continue working for the community in the Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston riding By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
R0013450127_0910
News – Scott Reid has been MP for the Lanark and Frontenac area for the past 15 years and although the riding has undergone many changes, Reid says his commitment to the community he serves has not. “My commitment has always been to the residents and I think my biggest accomplishment in the riding has been the installation of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) into public buildings,” said Reid. “My goal has been to raise awareness about heart health and aid in this area and I hope to continue that work.” The project started back in 2001 when Reid was faced with the dilemma of whether or not to take a pay increase. While MPs already earned a salary of approximately $100,000, a new bill wanted to increase that salary by $20,000. MPs were asked to vote for or against the
raise and those who voted against were asked to opt out. “I went out and I asked my constituents to answer a questionnaire about whether I should opt-out, or whether I should opt-in and then take that extra money and put it towards a local charitable cause,” explained Reid. Reid received many responses and 80 per cent of those who responded asked Reid to take the money and use it in the community; Reid did just that and has spent it on community AEDs, CPR courses and general health causes ever since. “In rural areas it takes longer for ambulances to arrive and an AED can save lives,” he said. “I even took the cause further and brought a motion to parliament to put AEDs in every arena across the country. It passed and my next goal is to get them in every OPP and RCMP officer’s trunk.” Along with health concerns, Reid is also very concerned about the

economy, taxation and the prospect of a global economic downturn. “The key issues are the same urban, rural and nationally and the economy is clearly num- b e r one,” he said. “Taxation is a key issue and whether we are going to take on debt with the proposed new Ontario Pension Plan put forth by Premier Wynne or if we are going to stick with the Conservative choice of the taxfree savings
accounts.” Reid also pointed out that while it is still unclear, the economy could be on the verge of a major downturn and he hopes that voters will put their trust in Prime Minister Harper to steer the country in the right direction. “People want someone who is capable of responding to the crisis and then rebuilding us out of crisis as Stephen Harper has done before. They don’t want a government whose response to that is simply spending more money.” Reid is looking forward to getting out on the campaign trail and reacquainting himself with the new and old areas of the LanarkFrontenacKingston riding. He knows that some are opposed to the addition of Kingston north Conservative incumbent, Scott Reid, hopes to con- of the 401 to tinue his community work in the Lanark-Frontenac- the riding, but Kingston riding this October. Photo/Submitted he sees it as a
welcome addition. “That area has a lot of linkages to South Frontenac and in many ways it is closer to the issues that face that area than those in the city of Kingston itself,” he said. Reid hopes that voters see his track record when they go to the polls and he also hopes that they take into account the many years of experience he brings to the riding and to Ottawa. “There is a lack of long-term expertise in our parliament and the average MP is not in for that long,” said Reid. “I have been around for a long time by Canadian standards and that gives me a level of knowledge that many people don’t have.” Along with holding the position of MP, Reid has also been the chair of the International Human Rights Sub-committee through three parliaments and is currently the Deputy leader of the Government in the House of Commons. “I have a level of knowledge that I think is unrivalled,” he said. “I think all of this, along with the kind of community involvement I have and my focus on issues regarding rural health are very valuable to this riding and I hope people vote for me to continue my work.” Place Place youyour ad in ad in EMC the Classifieds Classifieds

A group of about 20 dancers took part in a performance of Move, presented by the City of Kingston last week in the malting tower of the Tett Centre. The installation piece, created by acclaimed dancer Peggy Baker, marked the end of her residency in the arts hub. Baker is considered one of the most influential contemporary dancers of her generation. During Baker’s residency, she presented: Figures in Motion, a presentation exploring the parallels between the visual arts and dance; dance workshops for dancers and teachers; Flux Session, a movement-based session that allowed all ages and abilities to create choreography; an arts educator workshop; and Move, the dance installation piece. The Good News from the Wolfe Island Community Medical Clinic is that Dr. Deanna Russell returns to the island October 8th for regular patient appointments Tuesdays from 2:30 pm to 4:45 pm followed by an after hours clinic till 6pm. Further Good News is the fact that Nurse Practitioner (NP) Bonnie Sparrow will continue to hold weekly Thursday Clinics from 9:00 to 11: 30 am. It is anticipated that these will clinics will be increased if there is sufficient demand. It should be noted the summer NP clinics were very popular and much needed. The WI Community Medical Clinic Board urges residents to keep an eye out for a notice ( in the near future) inviting them to a public meeting to determine the community’s interest in seeing the NP Clinics continue and even expand. I never once saw him blow his nose into it, but he would take it out in church and pat his forehead with it, and I’d watch his eyes skirt around to see if anyone had noticed his spanking white handkerchief. If Kleenex was invented, we certainly knew nothing about it out on the farm. Mother hemmed squares of scraps of flour or sugar bags, and these were ‘everyday’ hankies used by the women in the family. They were taken to school by the girls, and Miss Crosby stressed time and again that it was important to bring a clean hankie to school every day. My older and wiser sister said it was because one girl who, it was rumoured, ‘only had a bath when the dirt started to show’, used her sleeve. Bad Marguirite of course, had hankies with the days of the week embroidered in one corner. What else would you expect from a girl whose golden curls came from a bottle from Ritza’s Drug Store, and wore white stockings and Mary Jane shoes to the Northcote School? hankies in their purses, and every time Mother left the house, a clean hanky was doused with cologne and tucked inside, and when she opened her purse to get out her change purse (women didn’t have wallets back then), the heavenly scent of her perfume would float out, filling the air around her. My brother Emerson hated the smell, and vowed Mother’s perfume laden hankies gave him a headache, but I often opened and closed Mother’s purse in rapid succession just to get a whiff. Hankies were bought in fancy square boxes, folded so that the corners showed tiny embroidered flowers. These could be bought at Walker’s Store in Renfrew for .25 cents, which made them a perfect gift for the teacher at Christmas, or when school ended in June. I was sure Miss Crosby had a stack of boxed hankies a mile high. My brothers handkerchiefs were just like Father’s. Either dark blue or red. Emerson longed for handkerchiefs like Uncle Lou’s, as white as the driven snow, and crisp as paper. The year he got one for Christmas, he was so overjoyed, he went right to the phone, rang three longs and a short, and told his friend Leo Thom. Mother wouldn’t let him take it to school. He put it in his back pocket only on Sunday’s for

handkerchiefs had many uses. Audrey and I had our own hankies, and we kept them in our drawer in the washstand in our bedroom. We didn’t have many, perhaps three or four. And one was kept especially for tying whatever few coins we had into its corner. We laid the hanky out flat, put the coins in one corner, wrapped the corner over, and then tied it in a knot. Audrey’s were in one side of the drawer, and mine in another. The few others we had were taken to church, and only occasionally to school, and we carried them tucked under the wrist of the sleeve of whatever we happened to be wearing that day. If we had short sleeves, then the hanky was tucked under the leg elastic of our underpants. There was no shame in hauling out our hankie from the leg of our bloomers in school hours, if we needed it! Now, Mother’s hankies were a different story altogether. She hoarded the few she had brought from New York as if they were made of the finest linen. Some had her initial “M” embroidered in one corner, which I thought at the time was the height of elegance, and I suspected back then, were probably the only hankies of their kind in all of Northcote! And Mother’s hankies had a special purpose too. Ladies carried their
