City looks to Canada Post to make some winter bucks By Bill Hutchins Reporter
News - Winter is usually a big drain on Kingston’s municipal budget, but there could be a way for the city to make some money from snow removal. Councillors are exploring a new source of non-tax revenues by offering to clear away the snow from Canada Post community mailboxes throughout Kingston. But it’s uncertain whether the post office will want to pay for a contracted service that the city has, in the past, occasionally provided free of charge. Coun. Jeff McLaren, who introduced the fee-for-service motion, says Canada Post is obligated to clear the snow around its community mailboxes. He says it makes sense for city plows to charge a fee to do the job, noting it won’t slow down public works crews from plowing their existing routes. “We have sidewalk plows that go right beside (mailboxes).” Mayor Bryan Paterson applauded the spirit of the motion and says it fits with the new council’s vision of being a smart city for the 21st century. However, he questioned the city’s ability to take on the extra snow clearing duties at this time. “If we have capacity then that could make sense,” the mayor said, adding: “This is probably not a window of opportunity.” Chief administrator Gerard Hunt told People interested in the bicentennial of Sir Joh A Macdonald’s birth had an opportunity to see a preview of the SALON Theatre’s performance during New Year’s Eve celebrations at the Rogers K-Rock Centre in Kings- council the city currently has “no capacton on New Year’s Eve. Actor Paul Dyck will be portaying Sir John A Macdonald during local events from Jan. ity” to take on additional services, noting the public works department is “still trying 6 - 11. Photo/John Harman

to get a handle” on its own winter control standards for roads and sidewalks. Council decided to plow ahead with the money-making scheme anyway, voting 8-5 in support of it. Mayor Paterson and Councillors Adam Candon, Kevin George, Liz Schell and Laura Turner voted in the minority against the motion. The motion asks staff to report back to the environment, infrastructure and transportation committee by the end of November 2015 on the potential revenue opportunities and snow plowing capacity issues. Coun. Kevin George raised questions about whether Kingston should be competing with snow clearing companies. “I don’t know if we should be in the business of taking jobs away from the private sector.” He also questioned whether the proposed “drop in the bucket” revenue source could increase the city’s liability if someone slips and is injured around a mailbox. “It is part of the solution not part of the problem,” explained Coun. McLaren of his idea, adding this is “one drop in thousands of drops” that could reduce pressure on property taxpayers. One thing is certain – more community mail boxes will start sprouting up in neighbourhoods around Kingston in 2015 as Canada Post begins phasing out home mail delivery to about five million households in urban areas nationwide. The post office says it has lost $1.2 billion in revenues due to the shift from paper to digital mail between 2006 and 2013, according to information given to the city.

First friction: new councillor’s request for staff ‘accountability’ defeated By Bill Hutchins Reporter
Frontenacs end ‘14 with win over Generals The Kingston Frontenacs ended 2014 on a high note with a 2-1 win over the Oshawa Generals at the Rogers K-Rock Centre in Kingston on December 30th. Kingston played a strong defensive game and got goals from Conor McGlynn and Sam Schutt. Stephen Desrocher had the lone Oshawa goal. Photo/John Harman

News – Just weeks into their jobs, some of Kingston’s new councillors are trying to shake-up the establishment. But they are running into resistance. “This is a new council and we may want to do things differently,” said Coun. Jeff McLaren, who launched council into its first spirited public debate about whether there should be more checks and balances over how budget dollars are spent. Specifically, he questioned the need for council to delegate some of its budget powers to senior staff for the next four years. The delegation of authority for city managers to spend tax dollars, sign contracts and hire employees is a familiar process that’s been going on for decades. It is considered part of the day-to-day running of the municipality that council usually doesn’t hear about. The ongoing policy was brought to the council’s attention by staff who sought the continued transfer of executive signing authority to coincide with the new council term. The powers would give managers direct authority to execute contract and service agreements for a variety of municipal needs such as child care, youth services, longterm seniors home care, social assistance, social housing and support for the homeless. However, the chief administrator’s Dec. 16 recommendation turned out to be anything but a routine request. “I’m not entirely sure what all this means,” said a bewildered Coun. McLaren. He proposed amending the recommendation to allow just a one year extension for staff signing authority, and for staff to give regular updates and examples of del-
egated powers they have used to execute service agreements. “This is not trying to create extra work for staff but to ensure accountability remains,” said Coun. Peter Stroud, who supported the amendment. The amendment for increased “accountability” did not attract enough council support, but it triggered a spirited debate that seemed to catch staff by surprise. “Delegated authority has been in place since 1998. Obviously this is not a new concept,” explained commissioner Lanie Hurdle. She says the amendment asking staff to provide council reports on every delegated decision could cause bureaucratic overload, and end up delaying services to “those in need.” Mayor Bryan Paterson opposed the increased oversight, saying it is council’s job to develop policies and not to get into the kitchen of staff’s work. “This is a $300 million corporation and it’s simply impossible for council to keep tabs on routine operations.” Coun. McLaren admits he is new to the political role, but says council has a higher responsibility to monitor the use of tax dollars. “This is not micro-managing. This is oversight. This is due diligence.” Mayor Paterson urged junior councillors to trust the experience of senior councillors and to support the status quo arrangement. “In the last 14 years we haven’t seen any particular problems with this type of delegated authority.” Veteran councillor Kevin George also spoke against McLaren’s amendment. “I have trust in our staff.” Only McLaren and Stroud supported the amendment, which lost 11-2.

Frontenac County First World War battalion project ready for inspection Reporter
Gazette News — Although the term ‘Lost Battalion’ usually refers to nine companies of the U.S. Army’s 77th Division, the term could apply to any number of units that have been ‘lost’ from history for a variety of reasons. However, Verona’s Doug Lovegrove, a career military man turned military historian in retirement, has made it his essentially one-man mission to make sure that term will never be applied to the 146th Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The 146th is particularly dear to Lovegrove, as it was the unit formed right here in Frontenac County, in the fall of 1915. As such, in conjunction with the historical societies in South Frontenac and the new museum project (for which Lovegrove will serve as military historian), Lovegrove has spent the past year or so researching and collecting whatever information, pictures and stories about the 146th that he can. And as this goes to press, the 146th Battalion website should be up and running. The site is far from complete, Lovegrove admits, but he’s hoping that it might generate more interest that will result in people contacting him with photos and particularly artifacts, which are very rare and tend to be pricey.
“While the unit was formed in Canada and shipped overseas as the 146th, when it got to England, it was disbanded and its members distributed to other units, he said. “So finding things like uniforms and buttons and insignias is difficult and when you do find them, they are expensive. When the First World War broke out in August of 1914, Canada had only about 3,100 permanent troops. In 1915, Col. Sam Hughes decided to organize volunteers into new battalions, one of which was the 146th. The call went out. Schoolteachers in Verona, Tamworth, Sharbot Lake and Sydenham were required to read a letter from Col. Hughes to their students, asking them to volunteer. Some 500 men from Frontenac, Lennox & Addington and Lanark Counties answered the call, including John Babcock, generally agreed to be Canada’s last surviving veteran of the First World War, who was later transferred to the Young Soldiers Battalion after being recognized as underage by one of the officers. Although Lovegrove has managed to amass an impressive report on the 146th, there is still much to be done, he said. For instance, the regimental colours have been lost, as has the regimental song, and he’d dearly love to hear from anyone who might have information on either. (The 146th did have its own band, nearly 60 members
Doug Lovegrove with the composite photo of the 146th Battalion he pieced together. strong and led by George Grange of Belleville.) To that end, Lovegrove has included a downloadable information form on the website.

motions at the first working meeting of their term, both designed to address long-standing concerns from university students and administrators. The first motion, approved 13-0, instructs the public works department to work with university and student leaders to “broaden the pedestrian priority sidewalk snow removal in the Queen’s main campus area.” Queen’s is home to about 20,000 students and has been described as a “small city,” but its main campus sidewalks are not currently identified as priority routes for Kingston’s winter snow plows. “I think this is a good first step to alleviate a serious problem in the core of the city,” said Coun. Jim Neill, who introduced the Dec. 16 motion. The council action stems from a recent appeal by the Queen’s student government to improve sidewalk snow and ice removal on campus, an area used by thousands of students every day. Queen’s principal Daniel Woolf also wrote to the city urging improvements in the snow clearing service. “I have very real concerns.”
The public works department recently completed a report that outlined its struggles to keep pace with winter control in the city, especially sidewalk plowing, amid growing subdivisions and some equipment shortages. The city has added 23 kilometres of road lanes and 60 kilometres of sidewalk and pathways in the past six years. Public works director Damon Wells assured councillors that a service review currently underway this winter will provide a clearer picture of his department’s operational needs in future years. Wells recently told councillors that the city doesn’t have enough staffing and equipment to give campus sidewalks equal plowing priority with other Kingston neighbourhoods, including bus shelters and school zones. However, Coun. Neill says unanimous approval of his motion ensures it will be included in the service review. “It gives staff clear direction.” It’s not the only campus pedestrian safety issue that council tackled. Another motion from Coun. Neill instructs staff to explore the feasibility of creating a “scramble crossing” during the school year at the Union Street and University Avenue intersection. “It makes sense to have a scramble crossing,” said Neill, who noted: COACH & TOURS “Scramble crossings in Toronto work very effectively in high pedestrian traffic areas.” Scramble crossings require vehicles to stop in all directions during EXPERIENCE THE ROAD TO regular traffic light cycles, allowing pedestrians to cross anywhere within EXCELLENCE the intersection including diagonally. Playing holiday tug-of-war
It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is over. Each year it feels like it goes by so quickly, which is usually a bad thing, but this year I was kind of happy to see it all end. Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas and the holiday buzz that comes along with it, but this year I felt like I was being pulled in a million different directions and I had very little time to just enjoy the season. This year, Korey and I were really excited to go home for the holidays (to the GTA) and we couldn’t wait to get away. We both had a significant amount of time off of work and we were excited to spend it with family and friends. We had plans to relax at home, visit with our families and spend a few days with close friends that we rarely get to see throughout the year. It was going to be great, or so we thought. In reality, things were less than perfect and far from relaxing. Between spending time with my family and his family, Korey and I barely had time to do anything else.
We traveled back and forth between our two families several times and by the end of Boxing Day we needed a vacation from our vacation. Believe it or not, I was actually happy to spend some time shopping at the mall. I know that this situation is not unique to us and many people reading this are probably nodding in agreement, but we had never experienced this kind of holiday tugof-war until this year. I’ve always found the holidays very enjoyable and relaxing, but for some reason we were in high demand this year and pleasing everyone proved very difficult. Perhaps our parents and families are so far removed from the time when they had to balance two families during the holidays to realize what they are doing, or maybe they just can’t see that their demands on our time are sometimes unreasonable. Either way, our holiday didn’t feel like much of one at all. I also find the holidays particularly stressful because I am not an extremely social person to begin with. Sure I am comfortable with my family and Korey’s family, but at a certain point I just don’t want to be around anyone or talk to anyone. I think maybe this comes from being an only child. I’m used to having alone time
In Our Opinion and as I get older I cherish that time more and more. I enjoy relaxing by myself with a good book or movie, and although I love my family, I really need those solitary times to recharge. In the end, we only spent one evening with our friends and a very rushed evening at that. Not surprisingly, many of our friends had the same complaints as us, they also felt the push and pull of the holidays. Needless to say we were all happy to be out and free from holiday socializing with family and extended family and we happily enjoyed catching up. Luckily, by the time New Year’s Eve rolled around, we were back in Kingston and ready to relax. Korey and I aren’t much for partying or going out to bars so we spent a simple night in, relaxing, watching movies and basically treating the evening like any other night but with the added bonus of champagne. I called my parents at midnight and I was happy to speak with them and wish them a Happy New Year. I am grateful to have so many great people in my life that want to spend time with me over the holidays and I do truly love seeing them all, I just wish there was more time throughout the holiday season for them‌ and for me.
No, no, no, we simply can’t have two different Quicksilvers Kanata Kourier-Standard son plays the mutant speedster.
The key word here is “mutant.â€? As you are no doubt aware, the Marvel Movie Franchise characters are split up amongst three studios. 20th Century Fox owns the rights to the X-Men (ie the mutants) and Fantastic Four. Columbia Pictures owns the movie rights to Spider-Man and Ghost Rider. Marvel Studios, aka Disney, owns the rest, which includes The Avengers, Dr. Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy. And the various studios don’t seem to want to play nice with each other. This has all culminated in two studios claiming the rights to Quicksilver while the third refuses to let Spider-Man appear in any of the other Marvel franchises. When an intolerable situation exists, something must be done about it. In particular this time, the intolerable situation is two Quicksilvers. Although we haven’t seen much of the Avengers Quicksilver on film yet, he certainly appears quite different from the fellow that helps Professor X and Wolverine break into the Pentagon to spring Magneto. Roasting and toasting the first prime minister Editorial - As most of our readers are undoubtedly aware, Jan. 6 – 11 is Macdonald Week in Kingston. Presented by SALON Theatre’s Sir John A 2015 company, with the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage and the City of Kingston, the event marks the 200th birthday of Canada’s first prime minister. Many people are careful to avoid the using words like “celebrateâ€? in relation to Macdonald Week because, quite frankly, Sir John A did many things that should not be celebrated. For example, ordering the execution of Metis leader Louis Riel, overseeing the implementation of early residential schools for First Nations children, and famously vomiting in parliament on more than one occasion due to excessive drunkenness. Others believe it’s unfair to impose the values of the present on Macdonald. Everybody was pretty much drunk all the time in the mid-1800s, they say. It would have looked weird for John A. to show up for work sober. Everybody was also a raging racist back in the day, so how could we ever expect our first prime minister to somehow rise above the pervading mindset of his time? We believe that yes, we should absolutely judge Macdonald for his actions by today’s standards. Many things that he did, particularly in relation to Asian and First Nations people, were flat-out wrong. We need to take note of that, and in so doing acknowledge not only how far we have come as a society, but also how far we still need to go. That said, our judgement of Sir John A and everyone from previous centuries will naturally be more nuanced than the way in which we would judge a contemporary for the same deeds. To this day, many elderly grandparents have less-than-politically correct terms for people of different races. It is the job of their children and grandchildren to point out their hurtful, narrow-minded attitude and language and encourage them to change. In most cases, though, this does this mean we deny they are our ancestors and fail to honour the good things they have done in their lives. We shake our heads and count our blessings that we were born into a more enlightened generation. But just how enlightened are we, anyway? How will future generations remember us? What will they think, for example, of the fact that we frequently engage in activities we know for a fact contribute to climate change? If Florida becomes engulfed by the Atlantic in 100 years, they will blame us. If the values of future generations shift so that killing animals for food and fashion is widely viewed as murder, the majority of today’s most respected leaders and visionaries will be frowned upon for their diets. While most contemporary democratically elected leaders appear progressive when compared with 200-year-olds like John A, many are still accused of criminal activities, even by today’s standards. Imagine how they will be remembered by future generations. Organizers of Macdonald Week appear to be doing everything they can to promote an open and honest discussion of our founding father, and include input from people who collectively hold a wide variety of perspectives and opinions. More than anything, we are happy to see history being discussed in this way. We encourage you to learn about Macdonald and history in general. Form opinions. Make judgements. Engage. Understanding the past is key to our future. !DVERTISING RATES AND TERMS AND CONDITIONS ARE ACCORDING TO CLASSIFIED For a full ADVERTISING listing of allSALES: Macdonald s Week events, visit http://www.sirthe rate card in effect at time advertising published. I do a lot of work with local arts groups and was present representing a couple of the groups. I was also snapping away with my camera, in awe of what I witnessed. When I walked into the concert hall at the Bader, I stood mesmerized. I whispered to no one in particular: “I feel like I just walked into Juilliard” (one of the world’s foremost performing arts universities, located in New York City). Every corner I turned in the arts hub on the King Street waterfront brought a sense of expectation for things wondrous and spectacular in the arts realm. While wandering the Tett, which at that point was really a structural framework with none of the walls up, my sense of awe grew. Eight arts organizations were about to come together under one arts hub roof. Eight creativity studios awaited resident artists. I was thrilled to be photographing and documenting this historic process, one that is the envy of the arts community in Canada. As we toured the building, I kept touching the walls, those beautiful limestone protectors of history, there for almost 200 years. I saw a giant fireplace under construction, a lakeside restaurant/cafe, a 2,000-square-foot rehearsal hall, special beams (for aerial work) placed in the Kingston School of Dance studios, which, at that point consisted mostly of concrete and beams, wires, tubes and pipes everywhere. At the lakeside end of the building I ran my hands along the limestone walls in the corner and took photographs of the stunning space, even when it only consisted of framed-in skeletons of walls. Last week, I ran my hands along the same walls, this time in my own studio. I was excited for all the artistic collaboration that would be possible at the Tett, thinking I’d continue my ongoing work and projects with Kingston School of Dance and Theatre Kingston. Over the past few months, in my columns, I wrote about each of the resident companies that would be moving into the Tett. Everything changed on Thanksgiving weekend. I spent time in Toronto visiting a relative and a dear friend. I had shown photos to him of the Tett under construction and told him about all that was going on. He asked, “And why aren’t you applying for one of those studios? This is a historic moment for the arts in Canada and Kingston and you aren’t applying to be part of this; why not?” That chat over dinner changed everything. I came back to Kingston, attended an Oct. 15 meeting for Tett applicants, and was buzzed with excitement. The deadline for applications arrived at the end of October and, in the middle of three major projects I was working on, I managed to get my mine in on time. Then I tossed the idea aside. I’d seen the number and quality of artists of many styles who were applying and pretty well put the idea out of my mind, until the date of the announcement. Then the (pleasant) shock: I had been selected as one of the resident artists.

I soon attended my first event at the waterfront hub, Theatre Kingston’s production of Venus in Fur at the Bader—theatre of high professional quality in a world-class setting. The site was off to a great start. In early December, a meeting was held for the 11 artists (some are sharing their space) who will inhabit the Tett’s creativity studios. This was the first time we had met as a group and it was one meeting where I did not get bored (I tend to be antsy after two or three minutes in any meeting) as we all got to know each other. What a diverse group we are, ranging from myself, a writer and photographer, to others who are filmmakers, a sculptor, a drum maker, water colour artists, and other designers of all that is creative. A huge emphasis at the Tett is to bring artists together for collaborative work and to offer arts outreach to the community. There will be a large number of workshops and events planned on an ongoing basis. There are summer arts camps available in several specialties. I’ll be running the photography arts stream. The whole Tett community engagement process is in the talented hands of Shannon Brown. The facility management responsibilities rest with John Mirski. These two have done an amazing job of dealing with we artists as well as all of the construction, delays and coodinating of moves into the building. The grand re-opening of the Tett will take place
on Sunday, Jan. 31 in a program called The Whole Shebang, which has literally taken more than a year and a half of preparation. Some of the talent on hand that day and the work being presented is mind bending. Sneaky hint....prepare for things spectacular from Kingston School of Dance. Feel free to drop into the Tett at any time, not just on Jan. 31. Visit the resident companies and resident artists. We’re all open to chatting and having our work observed. I want to talk photography for hours on end. I’m going to be hosting some photography mentoring in the coming months. I’m in Studio 214E. If you’re interested in drums and drum making, check out the work of Yessica Rivera Belsham (featured in next week’s Enchanté). I’m surrounded by so much talent that I’ll be featuring most of my artist colleagues in my Enchanté columns over the next several weeks. I had touched the walls of my new artistic world during its prenatal stage. When I had the keys in hand near the end of December, I walked to the same wall and touched it again. Then I looked out the window onto the lake. I felt like I was living in a castle. I’d entered Narnia, minus that nasty queen. I began the big move into the Tett studio during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. On Dec. 29, I took my first photos in the studio. I took more the next day, to add to the year-long Ballerinas Dancing in the Streets project I am working on with Jonathan Sugarman.
In fact, I spent New Year’s Eve in my studio. The party thing doesn’t appeal to me anyway, and I wanted to be in this new artistic sacred space. On New Year’s Day, I met with four of the dedicated and highly talented Ballerinas Dancing in the Streets project dancers at my studio to begin the year with them. Three days later, on Jan. 4, four more dancers were involved in another photo session in the studio. I was still setting up equipment, but the ambient light in the room is so beautiful, no external lighting was required. Feel free to drop in anytime, but make sure not to miss The Whole Shebang on Sunday, Jan. 31 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. The doors of the Tett will open at noon that day. Get ready for an afternoon of drums, musical monsters, ghost stories, aerial dance inspired by drop spinning, a piano that looks like a loom and much more. The Whole Shebang promises to be a family-friendly experience. Local artists, under the guidance of Andrea Nann, Artistic Director of Dreamwalker Dance Company, have created an event that brings to life the creative and collaborative nature of the Tett. Every corner of the building will be alive with a diverse array of performance pieces, installation art and optional participation. City councillors face first test of the New Year: 2015 budget talks open in January By Bill Hutchins Reporter
News – The mayor’s ‘smart’ city vision will face a crucial test in a couple of weeks when city councillors open the books on the 2015 budget. The early indications are that Kingston property owners may be facing a tax increase that’s slightly higher than what the previous council achieved. “In the range of two to three per cent is going to be what we’re hoping for,” said chief administrator Gerard Hunt in a year-end interview. He says that includes continuing
the city’s decade-long practice of working a one per cent tax increase into the overall rate to raise money for ongoing road repairs and other capital improvements. The 2015 operating and capital budgets are expected to be presented to councillors over three nights this month – Jan. 20, 21 and 22. Because of the high election turnover, most of them have never sifted through the massive budget details before, and they’re expected to ask a lot of questions about how the money is raised and how it is spent. While Hunt says the budget document is still being finalized, he says it will continue a pattern that was
set by the previous council. “We don’t want to come in with something that’s substantially different than the path that we’ve been on.” The path includes moving the municipal tax increase closer to the annual inflation rate without making any drastic service cuts. In fact, the city plans to increase spending with the launch of two more public transit express routes this spring. Tax affordability remains a sore point for many residents who have complained the city isn’t trying hard enough to limit the increases they are asked to pay annually. In his inauguration address, Mayor Paterson pledged to create a smart city that explores new sources of
revenue to ease the burden on homeowners. Hunt says the upcoming 2015 budget talks will attempt to reflect some of the mayor’s strategies, but he says staff will require further direction in order to have the new council’s priorities incorporated into future budgets. “We have to be more creative and more visionary in terms in how we bring finances to the table for council.” The 2014 budget came in at $318 million with a municipal tax increase of 2.1 percent, which amounted to an extra $75 charge on the average house assessed at $270,000. The previous council boasted about how it had adopted the lowest tax rate in-

Gazette News — Taking a page from the artist/artisan studio and wine-country taste tours, the Lanark & District Maple Syrup Producers Association will be hosting the first-ever Maple Weekend, $ CALL TO DISCUSS FUNDING OPTIONS $ April 4-5 (which is also Easter Weekend this year) in three counties (Frontenac, Lanark, Leeds & Grenville). Sharbot Lake producer George Conboy, who runs George & Darlene Conboy & Sons Maple Syrup on Bell Line road, is one of the organizers and driving forces behind the event. “This is a pilot project and if it’s a success, we hope to make it an annual event,” he said. “The Association has put a lot of money behind it for advertising and such. “Let’s hope the weather cooperates.” Although similar in format to studio and wine tours, weather is very much With the purchase of a monthly WeCare Maintenance Plan! a factor for something like 2495 Princess St. @ Gardiners Rd. this, not only for the comfort of guests but because of the mercurial nature of the annual sap run in area maple trees. www.havenhomeclimatecare.ca R0012895513 TRUCK TRAINING ACADEMY

creases since amalgamation without impacting services. However, staff have warned that it could become increasingly difficult to keep future property tax rates this low due to inflationary pressures from salaries and supplies, reduced government transfer payments, plus spending demands from external agencies and a push to increase frontline services such as snow plowing. Hunt says it all adds up to a delicate balancing act to meet the needs of a growing city without taxing residents out of their homes. “We don’t have the actual (budget) numbers at the moment but we know that more affordability is the issue.”

Undaunted, however, Conboy believes the odds are on their side. “All springs are different,” he said. “Two years ago, we were all done by mid-March and last year it just dragged on and on. “But most years it’s about the same time and we hope to be boiling sap that weekend. “Even if the sap is not running, we’ll have steam going.” And that’s a big part of what the weekend is all about, he said, showing people how the syrup made from sap, and how the sap is collected. And while the ultimate goal is to promote eventual sales, this weekend is more about informing and entertaining, he said. “We’re trying to get people interested and aware,” he said. “It used to be that everyone in the area came from the farm but now many are three or four generations removed from that.” The tour features 18 producers, from Mallorytown to Mississippi Mills. Of course Wheeler’s Pancake House is one of the stops and in Frontenac County, Conboy is joined on the tour by cousins Melvin and Joyce Conboy, also on Bell Line Road but the other side of 509. Many of the producers will be of the larger family varieties, typically those in the 4,000-5,000 gallon tap range, with some smaller producers as well. For more on Maple Weekend, as well as a map of locations to visit, go to mapleweekend.ca. Conboy said the industry is essentially in good shape, citing two equipment stores in Lanark County that are thriving as evidence. One of the two stores tends to cater to hobby-style producers, which he said is a growing aspect of the industry. And for those hobbyists, Conboy said all of the participants are “very open to sharing expertise.” But mostly, he said, it’s a good opportunity to get out for a spring drive with the kids after a long winter. “We’ll show you the process . . . and give you a little taste,” he said.

OMG you guys! QMT presents Legally Blonde: The Musical Events - Pink is just as powerful as any other colour. That’s the message at the heart of the novel Legally Blonde by Amanda Brown, and the 2001 film by the same name starring Reese Witherspoon. In 2007, the story of Elle Woods’ acceptance to and first year at Harvard Law School was set to music and made its Broadway debut. From Jan. 8 – 17, you can see it live at Theological Hall as Queen’s Musical Theatre presents Legally Blonde: The Musical, starring Mariana Paz-SoldĂĄn as Elle and Liam Collins as Emmet Forest. “It’s a ton of fun,â€? remarks director Sean McCabe, a fourth year drama major. “It’s something popular that people can recognize. It will bring a lot of people to the theatre, I think, especially a lot of students, just because of the success of the film.â€? For McCabe, the show is, at its heart, a celebration of femininity. “It’s the idea that we should recognize that people can succeed in all sorts

what heroes) that can bring a phenomenon crashing down. Marvel superheroes have been enjoying great success at the box office in the past few years, primarily because of director Bryan Singer’s excellent vision in his treatment of the first two XMen movies. This threatened to come apart when major characters (Cyclops, Jean Grey, Professor X) were killed off in the third one. Cudos to Singer for cleverly re-booting the franchise with DOFP and getting his movies back. But they’re fragile things, movie franchises. In 1978, Richard Donner decided to take Superman (fairly) seriously and created a decent movie. They got worse and worse until the absolute mess that was Superman IV killed superhero movies for quite awhile until Tim Burton came along with Batman in 1989 but its sequels too fell short culminating arguably the worst performance ever with Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mister Freeze in Batman & Robin. But then, Singer came along with X-Men and a renaissance of sorts began. Soon, we had the Dark Knight Batman series, Man of Steel and the Marvel Universe’s Iron Man and arguably the best superhero movie ever — The Avengers. But, it’s getting dangerously close to too much of a good thing, and everybody wanting in on the gravy train. It could come crashing down just like sports cards did.
of roles. Women can take on masculine roles, but feminine women and feminine men should be celebrated as well. It’s not just about people making their way in a ‘man’s world’ but also how do we celebrate the successes of femininity. McCabe explains that the script of the musical leaves quite a bit of room for interpretation and creativity, allowing him to really bring the point of this theme home in some fun and interesting ways. “We find our moments and do our best to create this as a team together and make our own unique choices. The most fun part of the QMT interpretation, according to McCabe, is (spoiler alert) Elle’s wardrobe choice for the last day of the big case she is working on. “Elle returns to the court after initially deciding to leave, but she decides this time to wear her pink suit instead of the navy suit that she had compromised on earlier. This, he says, epitomizes the thesis of the production: “She’s not going to conform and take on a masculine role, she’s going to do it with what she knows, and that’s going to
be the reason she succeeds. McCabe notes that he feels fortunate to have such a strong team behind him for this production. “It’s a really big cast, which speaks to the incredible skill of our stage manager and our production team to manage all that. Having to costume and light and mic and organize and schedule 27 people has been definitely a challenge, but they’re just incredibly committed, motivated people. That’s made it a lot easier. He encourages both fans of the movie and those who are new to the story to come out and check out the show. ‘They take a few creative liberties to make it theatrical and make it fit to The cast of Legally Blonde rehearses. the stage, but all in all it’s quite similar to the movie, says McCabe, add- formed Jan. 8 – 17 at Queen’s Theo- from the Grand Theatre’s website at ing that the music is pop/rock style, logical Hall. Kingston athlete receives OFSAA character award By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
R0012912099
Sports – Each semester, the Ontario Federation of School Athletics Associations (OFSAA) honours two high-school students, one male and one female, with a character award. The award recognizes athletes that demonstrate OFSAA’s values of leadership, equity, respect and sportsmanship. For the fall 2014
semester, Kingston’s own Mackenzie Curran was the proud recipient. “I actually found out on Twitter when one of my friends congratulated me,” said Curran. “I was very surprised and very honoured. I know that so many students probably get nominated and I can’t believe I was chosen.” Curran, a Grade 12 student at Holy Cross, is not a typical high school athlete. The 17 year-old basketball player was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in 2013, a bone marrow failure that can lead to leukemia. She needed a bone marrow transplant and in November of 2013 an anonymous donor was found. Curran’s transplant was successful, but recovery has been difficult. “When I was sick I wasn’t sure I would be able to return and play again and that just makes this award so much more special because of what I overcame to get to this point,” said Curran. “I want to keep playing and keep getting stronger. It has taken a lot of work to get back to the level I was at before, but I keep working at it and I love playing.” On top of recovery and building back her athletic skills, Curran has also worked with the Canadian Cancer Society and Canadian Blood Services to raise awareness about bone marrow donations and the importance of making matches. She has travelled across the province for

speaking engagements and was even the face of the Canadian Blood Services recent holiday campaign. “I wanted to give back and hopefully help other people find matches too,” explained Curran. “I actually spoke at Parliament Hill for the launch of the campaign this year and that was a great experience. I want to do whatever I can.” Curran was nominated for the OFSAA award by her coach, Kelly Dixon who watched her recovery over the past year in amazement. “Most of the time when you look at awards, you are looking at athletic ability and how the player has contributed to the overall success of the team,” explained Dixon. “In Mackenzie’s case it was more about how sport motivated her in her recovery and how it motivated her in terms of doing stuff above and beyond the school community.” Through various school and community fundraisers, Dixon watched Mackenzie grow and was inspired by not only her progress on the team, but also by her progress as an individual. “We always say that sports help to build character in kids and a lot of times that is what I am trying to help them with as a coach, but with Mackenzie those skills were already there and this experience has just enhanced those skills and her strength of character has really come through.” Curran was grateful for the nomination and for the award itself. She hopes to keep moving forward with her recovery and with

Dixon hopes Curran’s story and success will motivate other students and all members of the community: “I think she is a great example for kids on and off the court. We are all very proud of her and we are all thrilled with her recovery. It is so nice for her to receive some muchdeserved recognition.”

Heritage Events – Robert Burns may not be a name that is recognizable to everyone, but his work surely is; the Scottish poet and lyricist is most famous for writing songs like ‘Auld Lang Syne’ and ‘A Red, Red Rose’ along with other popular Scottish anthems. Each year these works and the man behind them are celebrated around the world and this year that includes a celebration in the town of Bath. The event, being held on Jan 23 at St. John’s Hall, is a celebration of Burns’ 218th birthday and includes a three-course prime rib roast dinner and Scottish entertainment. The celebration has been organized and is a fundraiser for the Fairfield-Gutzeit society, a group of volunteers who manage and maintain three historical houses in Bath. “The event is part of the ongoing fundraising that has to be done to look after these beautiful old buildings,” explained volunteer organizer and society member Diane Nolting. “We wanted to plan an event that would be fun, historical and that would maybe be of interest to those with Scottish heritage in the area.” Organizers have worked to make the event very true to Burns himself and the evening will include haggis, Scottish salads, scotches and wines and traditional trifle. Guests will also see performances by local bagpipers and Scottish dancers. “Many people when they think of Burns
think of wine, women and song and this promises to be an evening filled with all of those things and more,” added Nolting. “We will also have toasts to Burns that have been written by volunteers, it should be a great night.” Funds raised from the event, tickets are $50 each, will be used to help repaint the Fairfield-Gutzeit house in Bath. The home dates back to 1796 and has been maintained and preserved by the local society since 1998. The group also works to maintain Bath Town Hall and Layer Cake Hall. “We work hard to preserve these houses,” said Nolting. “We don’t want to restore them exactly, but we want the history to be preserved and displayed throughout so members of the community and visitors can learn and enjoy.” The Fairfield-Gutzeit society also holds a number of other fundraisers throughout the year including tours throughout the summer, holiday open houses and in recent years they have even rented out the properties for weddings. “We are always looking for new ways to fundraise,” explained society board member Sally McCulloch. “We’ve wanted to do an event like this dinner for a number of years and we hope it will become and annual event for us.” McCulloch originally hoped that the event could take place at the actual FairfieldGutzeit house, but because of space it had to be moved and she hopes that more people will come out for that reason.

et comes with a list of scientific credentials that would be the envy of any scientist not named Einstein. For example, he holds two doctorates, from Cornell University and the University of Moncton. He retired from Carleton University as Professor Emeritus, following a distinguished academic career that featured several visiting scientist/professor stints at prestigious universities including the University of Texas, the University of Warsaw and Uppsala University in Sweden. Add to that a lengthy list of consulting credits and several pages of scholarly published works and a constant demand for speaking engagements. And now, in his golden years, he has set upon pointing out the beauty that is the Canadian landscape, the necessity of preserving it, and just how important it is. “People in Kingston, for example, like to say that they don’t depend on us (here in the northern end of Frontenac County) but we are an integral part of their enjoyment of life, he said. “Can we start incorporating beauty into our concept of municipal planning? “I know that if somebody wanted to build something between me and my sunset, I wouldn’t be happy about it. With 450 named lakes in Frontenac County, there is plenty of beauty, increasing as one drives north on Road 38, he said. And while he’s not alarmist, he does see the value in preserving that beauty. “I don’t think anybody moved here for the industry, he said. “But if the lakes were to

Variety show supports queer film screening Aric McBay Reporter
R0013078802
Events - The Kingston Derby Girls and Reelout Queer Film & Video Festival are teaming up for a variety show and dance party on Jan. 9. Proceeds from the event will go toward a screening of a new documentary film. “This is going to be a really exciting event,” said Marie Bencze, one of the variety show organizers and a member of the roller derby league. “Performers and artists from the Kingston community are going to bring amazing energy to what promises to be a peppy, sexy, fun experience!” Entertainment will include live music from Mr. LoveClub, burlesque performers Buxom Betty, Miss Mae Oh My!, and E.L.E. Incognito, as well as roller derby-related acts from Manic Breeze and others. The variety show will be followed by a dance party with music by DJ Bluestocking and DJ Seditious. The fundraiser will support the screening of new documentary called In the Turn, which tells the story of Crystal Labonte, “a 10-year-old transgender girl who finds acceptance and
empowerment in the company of a queer roller derby collective.” After facing prejudice in her home town of Timmins in northern Ontario, Crystal gets support from “the Vagine Regime, an international queer collective of roller derby players comprised of people of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds and identities.” Reelout director Matt Salton approached the Kingston Derby Girls for help bringing Crystal and her mother to Kingston for the film festival’s lateJanuary screening of In the Turn. Bencze explained that the variety show is combined with “an online crowdfunding campaign to raise funds to give Crystal the red carpet treatment.” The crowdfunding page is at http://rkthb.co/51988. As of Jan. 1 the campaign was about halfway to its goal. Toni Thornton, another roller derby player and organizer for the variety show, is enthusiastic about the event as well. “I’m queer and strongly believe in the value of encouraging those who are queer/gender-queer to take up space and have voice. KDG is very proud to be involved in this project
with Reelout, and hope that folks will support our fundraising efforts to bring Crystal and her mom to Kingston for the film festival.” Thornton continued: “We want to celebrate her strength and her bravery in being a role model to all whose identities require asserting. And we want to embrace her as a member of the roller derby community!” The variety show and dance party starts at 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9. Tickets are available at the door for $10 or pay-what-you-can. The venue, The Mansion, is at 506 Princess Street. Fans of the Kingston Derby Girls will have to wait a bit longer for their first bout of the year; the season opener usually happens in May. But there are plenty of Reelout events in the near future. The queer film festival’s 16th season kicks off on Jan. 30 with the screening of In the Turn at the Isabel Bader Centre at 7 p.m. The festival runs until Feb. 7, and the full schedule can be found at www. reelout.com. Kingston Heritage/Frontenac Gazette - Thursday, January 8, 2015 17
Sandman shares winter magic with Mary Lifestyle - “Why is it, Audrey? As always, when I had to get an answer to an important question, I went to my sister...so much older and wiser than I was. I had been thinking about it for a long time, and that night, as we sat around the old pine table, having gone through Eaton’s catalogue once again, I had to have the answer, once and for all. I had asked Audrey why the Sandman only came to me, and why only in the dead of winter. And why, when Mother looked over at me, she would nod, and say, “here comes the Sandman again. I would look around me, seeking this creature, who it seemed, singled me out from the rest of the family, and without my even realizing it, said it was time for bed. Audrey closed the catalogue, draped her arm around my shoulders,
and said that after a certain age, the Sandman was no longer needed. He only came to very young children, and the reason he only came in the winter time, was that the days were shorter, and besides, he didn’t like the hot summer nights, and so hid away in the farthest regions of the world where it was much cooler. This all made perfect sense to me. Since I preferred winter too. And then Audrey, who Mother often said had the patience of a Saint, reminded me of all the times I fell asleep before anyone else in the house, and she said it was because the Sandman knew exactly when I was getting tired. She told me how she often had to nudge me in church on Sundays, when the minister deep in his sermon droned on. And she said that happened in the winter because there was nothing to look at outside the window by our pew, but in the summer I could see the birds, and sometimes a squirrel in a tree. And she said the Sandman would come, and unbeknownst to me, would tap me on my eyelids, and off I would go. I asked her how come I always
fell asleep in the flat-bottom sleigh when we were coming home at night from a neighbour’s, or from something going on at school or our church. Well, Audrey had a perfect explanation for that too. She said, the Sandman loved the cold weather, and the frosty nights, and the sleigh bells, and the sound of the horses hooves crunching in the snow, and he had so many little people to visit, he would come to those who fell asleep the fastest. Well, that was me alright! I would be barely tucked into the sleigh, under the big fur blanket, with a heavy scarf wrapped around my head, when I would drop off, and waken only with the gentle nudge of my sister that we had arrived at our old log house on the farm. And so often when it was time for us to play host to the Saturday night house party, I would stay awake as long as I could, listening to the fiddle music, the table being pounded
by euchre players, and the sound of Father playing the spoons. And I would sit on the bench near the back door, the best place to see the entire goings on, and I would find myself nodding, mesmerized by the sounds. If we were at someone else’s home for the Saturday night house party, the youngest of us would play upstairs in one of the bedrooms, and end up laying cross-wise on a bed, and like a miracle, I would waken the next morning in my very own bed, never waking while being dressed and carried out to the sleigh. My sister Audrey said the Sandman would have touched the eyelids of all of us, putting us to sleep, and then like limp dishrags, and unaware, we would be carried to the sleighs, undressed at our own homes, tucked into bed, none the wiser. I asked Audrey why I never felt the Sandman touching my eyelids. Why didn’t I see him? And my older and much wiser sister
would explain that the Sandman was just like Santa Claus. We knew he existed, didn’t we? And yet we didn’t see him, or hear him, or feel his touch. Well, she said, it was the same with the Sandman. And so like Santa Claus who I knew existed, but who I never saw, and just like the cream in the milk cans would rise to the top overnight, or how it would change to butter when churned, or how old Mrs. Beam seemed to know exactly what to do when we were hit with the measles or the chicken pox, there was no explanation. The Sandman was simply unseen but was there putting me to sleep when I least expected it. I put it all down to just plain old Renfrew County magic. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Go to https://www.smashwords.com and type MaryRCook for e-book purchase details, or if you would like a hard copy, please contact Mary at wick2@sympatico.ca.

Looking at real estate as a long-term investment is just one way approach a potential investment property. The following are a few additional considerations prospective investors should contemplate before buying an investment property. Location Many people are familiar with the real estate industry axiom, “location, location, location!” When buying an investment property, location is everything. A great location should outweigh your own personal feelings about the home, especially if you do not intend to live at the property. You will likely define a great location for an investment property differently than you would a property you intend to live in, so don’t let your own desires in a home cloud your judgement when choosing an investment property. Properties in safe neighborhoods that boast good schools and offer easy access to public transportation tend to make great investment properties. Décor Décor is another thing to consider when looking for an investment property. If you don’t plan to reside in the property, your opinion of the décor should not carry much weight. When viewing a property, try to imagine how much it might appeal to prospective tenants. Quirky properties typically do not appeal to as many prospective tenants
as properties whose décor are similar to other homes in the area. Though you might find a tenant who prefers properties with unique interiors, a property that appeals to as many prospective tenants as possible often makes for a better investment and a lot less stress when the time comes to find tenants. Condition The condition of the property also must be considered before buying an investment property. Some investors want a fixer-upper, while others prefer turnkey properties that won’t require any elbow grease. The former type of property likely won’t cost as much as a fully renovated property, but those cost savings might be lost when it’s time to renovate. Find a property that’s in the type of condition you’re comfortable with. If you decide to go with a fixer-upper, learn the cost of your potential projects before submitting an offer. Cost Real estate makes a great investment, but don’t go overboard when buying an investment property. Before making an offer on a property, research rents in the area and the cost of insurance in that particular neighborhood. You want a property that essentially pays for itself, so make sure the rent you’re likely to collect is enough to cover your monthly costs, including the mortgage on the property, insurance and the costs associated with managing and maintaining the property. Real estate investors often reap great rewards when selling their properties. But it’s still important for potential investors to consider a host of factors before investing in a property.
Tips for homeowners on their first renovation projects Home renovations are typically exciting, as homeowners get to see the visions of their dream homes come to light right before their very eyes. Turning an outdated bathroom into a modern oasis or an empty basement into the ultimate man cave strengthens the sense of attachment homeowners have with their homes. But few home renovation projects go from start to finish without experiencing a few bumps in the road along the way. Such bumps can be difficult to handle for homeowners working on their first renovation projects, but there are many ways for novices to navigate the sometimes murky waters of home improvement projects and come out relatively unscathed on the other end, where a newly renovated home awaits. • Plan well and know what to expect. When working with contractors, get all agreements in writing and spell out exactly what you desire in a home renovation. Photo references can help guide contractors and architects. Ask for the full picture of what can be expected with the work, from demolition to the punch list. Knowing what lies ahead can keep you grounded throughout the project. • Discuss work each day and set payment schedules. Make payments contingent on work completed. This can help keep contractors on schedule. Paying for all work upfront leaves homeowners at a disadvantage, as it does not provide incentive for workers to be timely and efficient. Check in with workers to get daily progress reports. • Have reasonable expectations. A renovation project may exceed its budget and take longer than initially
FANTASTIC EXECUTIVE EAST END NEIGHBOURHOOD
expected. Understanding that these potential setbacks might be part of the process will make it easier to handle them when the foreman speaks to you about any issues that arise. • Accept the mess. Construction work is messy. There’s no way to maintain a pristine house when contractors are entering and exiting all day. Dust is bound to be generated, and tools can fill up rooms. A home in disarray can be stressful, but continue to visualize the end result and the mess won’t bother you so much. • Establish a contingency plan. Bathrooms and kitchen renovations are typically the most disruptive home improvement projects. Going without a kitchen can make it difficult to enjoy meals at home, while a bathroom remodel may require you to navigate water shutoffs. If your project is scheduled to take several months, establish a contingency plan to deal with the consequences of your renovation project. Speak with family members about using some of their home amenities, and prepare and freeze meals in advance so you can reheat them later on when you don’t have access to your stove. • Plan your escape. Sometimes the constant work and mess of construction is too much to bear. Afford yourself time away by visiting relatives or staying at a hotel. Even a single night away can provide the relief you need. A home that is undergoing a remodel can be a less than comfortable environment. But homeowners who have never before lived through a renovation project can take several steps to make the process go as smoothly as possible.

Make the most of your home appraisal pect to pay a fee for the appraisal, which is generally included in your closing costs. The appraiser gathers information for the appraisal report from a number of sources, but the process often begins with a physical inspection of the property, both inside and out. He or she also will compare your home against a few others in the neighborhood, which are known as comparables, or comps. Appraisals will be based on recent prices of comparable properties as well as other factors. Apart from the improvements done to the home, there are other ways to get a higher appraisal amount. The appraiser may consider the overall maintenance of the home and property. It is wise to consider curb appeal and ensure the home is clean and maintained when the appraiser arrives. Minor repairs or common maintenance can impress the appraiser. Removing clutter and cleaning up the home’s interior can make the home appear larger, possibly increasing its value as a result. It may be worth it to invest some more money into the property before having an appraisal done. A study sponsored by the National Association of Realtors says wood floors, landscaping and an enclosed garage can lead to a more favorable appraisal. An appraiser will spend roughly 30 minutes in a home. Try to give that person space to do his or her job. Following the appraiser around during an inspection can raise a red flag that something is wrong with the house that you don’t want to
be seen. Turn lights on throughout the house, make sure the heating or cooling system is functioning at full capacity and keep pets locked away. Move items that can impede

When homeowners think about renovating their properties, many first need to secure some funding to finance such projects. Some may tap into the equity of their homes by refinancing an existing mortgage, while others may apply for home equity loans. Taking the latter approach may require certain steps, including an assessment of how much the home and property is worth. Home appraisals compare your home to neighboring properties to determine your home’s current market value. Homeowners can facilitate the process by having certain information readily available for the appraiser. When preparing for appraisers, homeowners should consider and collect the following information: • If your home was built on the largest lot in the community. • If you have made significant upgrades since it was last appraised, such as installing a new roof or siding. Don’t overlook smaller renovations, like extra insulation added or sealing drafty windows, which can increase a home’s value. • Proof that you have used sustainable resources or if you participated in any energy-savings programs. Naturally, any expansion projects, such as adding another bedroom or extending the footprint of the home, should be mentioned. A real estate appraiser is a certified, licensed professional who will do his or her best to determine the value of your home. The appraisal provides banks with information that can tell loan officers if the house is worth the loan amount. Ex-
