Frosty City to survey public sentiment to Fun encourage more recycling, less garbage By Bill Hutchins
News – If at first you don’t succeed – try harder. The City of Kingston has admittedly failed to reach its goal of achieving a 65 per cent landfill garbage diversion target by 2012. Despite reduced garbage bag limits, the introduction of curbside organics collection and increased public education, Kingston’s diversion rate remains stuck at a 56 per cent, based on 2013 figures. “Kingston’s diversion rate has remained in the 53-56 per cent range over the past four years,” according to a Feb. 10 staff report. A garbage audit conducted in 2014 suggests that up to half of the waste placed into weekly garbage bags could’ve been diverted away from the dump. “A 2014 audit of 100 single family homes showed that 37 per cent of the garbage stream was organics that could’ve been diverted through the green bin program and 13 per cent was recyclables that could’ve been diverted through the recycling program,” the information report noted. Councillors are taking another kick at the trash can by considering a new (front -back) Bath Public School Grade 6 students Kelsey Vermilyea, diversion target and timeline, and posLaura Hagerman and Madison Kerr try out the Febfest snow slide in sibly new rules for curbside garbage Confederation Park, in front of Kingston City Hall. Photo/Rob Mooy pick-up. The committee that oversees
the city’s environmental policies has adopted a motion to aim for a 60 per cent diversion rate by 2018 in advance of a re-established goal to divert 65 per cent of residential waste from the landfill by 2020. The difficult question that councillors will soon have to decide is how to realistically reach the goal within the next five years. So, they will turn to the public to help find solutions. The same committee motion, which council has yet to endorse, calls on staff to seek household waste prevention and diversion options through public forums and a survey starting in March. The feedback will be included in future recommendations for the committee to decide. Some of the options already under consideration may not be popular. These include; -eliminating the one ‘untagged’ residential garbage bag per week in favour of a full user pay system, -reducing the maximum size and weight of garbage bags, -using only clear garbage bags that show collectors whether any of the trash is recyclable or not, -reducing collection frequencies to once every second week. Staff say almost all of these options have already been adopted by other municipalities in one form or another. For example, Ottawa, Toronto, Barrie, Halton Region, York Region and

Durham Region have moved to residential garbage bag collection every second week, and Peel Region will do the same starting in 2016. Markham and Dufferin County will only take clear garbage bags from the curb, while other municipalities will only collect trash with bag tags. City officials say Kingston may have to adopt those or other measures in order to reach the 65 per cent waste diversion target as it tries to lay claim to being Canada’s most sustainable city. The last overhaul of the residential waste rules occurred in 2011 when the one untagged bag limit per household was adopted, with a $2 tag for each additional bag, and the green bin service was launched. Two bag weeks are only allowed following New Year’s Day, Victoria Day and Labour Day. But the green bin program – which includes kitchen waste and table scraps - has not caught on with the public the way officials had hoped. Only about four out of 10 households use green bins on a regular basis since the collection service was launched. In 2013, the city collected 40,795 tonnes of residential garbage - 18,108 tonnes ended up in a landfill and 22,687 tonnes were diverted through recycling. Officials have also revealed that all of Kingston’s garbage is now taken across the border to a landfill in upstate New York through a private disposal contract.

News – The hiring of an Integrity Commissioner has been swiftly shelved by the new council. The issue of whether to add a permanent part-time council watchdog to the municipal payroll with an annual budget of $50,000 led to months of political acrimony. The previous council voted 7-6 to proceed with the hiring more than one year ago, but there were delays in filling the position prior to the election. Coun. Jim Neill has now managed to persuade the new council to ditch the position. “I think this is an unwarranted, unnecessary expense,” he told council Feb. 3. Neill’s motion, endorsed by a 12-0 vote, simply states that Kingston “not hire an Integrity Commissioner on retainer and that any current RFP process to do so be cancelled.” “It’s pretty clear the way the winds are blowing here,” observed Mayor Bryan Paterson, who endorsed the motion even though he supported the last council’s attempt to hire. Paterson says he envisioned the Integrity Commissioner as more of an educational role to advise councillors about their behaviour and to update the city’s Code of Conduct, rather than to act as council’s cop. “Be pro-active so it doesn’t blow up later on,” he told council. However, Coun. Neill says the city doesn’t need an Integrity Commissioner to improve municipal government accountability and transparency. “We can do it ourselves.”
xplore le e ar ay l p
His push to quash the position followed an information report from the chief administrator who advised the hiring process stalled in 2014. Only two applicants responded to a Request for Proposals, and officials wanted to restart the hiring to clarify the city wanted an Integrity Commissioner to put a greater focus on providing pro-advice to councillors. Coun. Neill says the delay in hiring an Integrity Commissioner was an opportunity to reopen the debate, and stop the process in its tracks. He says Kingston can always hire an Integrity Commissioner to investigate individual complaints that may arise, but there’s no need to make it a permanent position. Coun. Ryan Boehme supported the motion based on financial reasons. He’s worried an Integrity Commissioner’s hourly legal fees could easily surpass the $50,000 established annual budget. The decision signals an abrupt about-face from the policy of the previous council, which wanted an independent advisor to be on call to respond to council or citizen complaints about the way elected officials conduct themselves. The initial hiring decision coincided with the launch of an Integrity Commissioner’s probe into the correspondence of former councillor Bill Glover and a city-hired expert during the city’s ward boundary appeal at the Ontario Municipal Board. The investigation outcome, which cost taxpayers $53,000, did not recommend any sanctions against Coun. Glover.

Kingston Passport Services: what you can really expect By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News – A few weeks ago, Service Canada in Kingston announced that they would now be accepting and processing passport applications, but what services are being offered exactly and how do those services differ from what was previously (and is still) offered at MP Ted Hsu’s office? The Heritage spoke to Hsu about the changes and learned why they were necessary and what people can expect when they apply in Kingston. “For a long time my office has been helping people with passport applications,” explained
Hsu…“But we found that the service was becoming very popular and that we didn’t have the staff and resources to continue.” When Hsu became MP in 2011, his office was processing 4,000 passport applications a year. Last year, his staff processed over 7,000 applications. Hsu had the equivalent of one and a half full-time staff members devoting time to only that service. “It was just too much and it prompted me to write to [then Minister of Citizenship and Immigration] Jason Kenney about the issue,” said Hsu. “I explained that given Kingston’s size, it would be nice if we had Passport Services offered by the federal government here in Kingston.”

FLOOR STOCK & CUSTOM ORDERS
Hsu received a response and acknowledgement of the issue, but no action was taken until Service Canada announced their increase in services a few weeks ago. Hsu was happy to hear about the increase in services and so were many Kingstonians, but when services commenced on Feb. 2, some were disappointed. “I went in there assuming, from everything that I had heard, that the process would be faster than it was before,” said Geoff Josey, who visited the Service Canada office at Frontenac Mall on Feb. 9. “I waited 45 minutes for them to tell me that I wouldn’t have a passport until March 14. I am travelling on March 11 and there was nothing they could do to expedite the process.” While the new addition of services does help process applications, the Service Canada location is not a full Passport Services site like those in Whitby and Ottawa. Applicants can expect a 4-6 week turnaround on their application, a fact that many weren’t aware of. “On Facebook I had a lot of people who were really excited about the service, but they had the idea that it would be a full passport office,” said Hsu. “It is not one of the offices where you can get a rush passport or one in two weeks even. The service is the same as services that are offered in Brockville and similar to what my office offers.” Just like at Hsu’s office, staff at Service Canada will look over passport applications and check for
common errors and they will mail off the forms without postage costs to the applicant; Service Canada is different form Hsu’s office in that they can accept different forms of payment like cash or credit and they can also check pieces of identification and return those that aren’t needed for your application. For Josey, these services aren’t enough and he feels that his time would have been better spent driving to Whitby or Oshawa in the first place. “I assumed that they would look over the application, make sure everything is in order and then send it off to Ottawa or Whitby and I expected it would be a quicker turnaround, four weeks being the absolute maximum,” he added. “I don’t really think these services are more helpful and I don’t really see the value in it.” In Hsu’s opinion, the increase in services will benefit the community and his office at the same time and he hopes Kingstonians see the value in that. “As a member of parliament I really have to focus on the more complicated cases and legislation and different federal issues that constituents bring up, and the passport services were to the point where they were taking away from that,” he said. “We will still offer passport services and handle cases that are out of the ordinary at my office, but now my staff can focus on other issues too.”

Kingston shelter told to open its books before city will open its wallet By Bill Hutchins
News – City council is attaching new strings before it provides additional funding to Dawn House women’s shelter. During the budget talks in January, Coun. Jeff McLaren managed to persuade council, by a close 7-6 vote, to provide an additional $155,000 in funding to the 10-bed shelter to ensure it stays open through 2015. City officials who administer the shelter funding were caught offguard by the surprise budget increase, and warned that it could be viewed as unfair to other non-profit groups. Dawn House was slated to lose its entire municipal subsidy this summer because it failed to apply for ongoing funding under the city’s new housing and homelessness program. The 2015/16 subsidy for the
women’s-only shelter was, instead, awarded to the Elizabeth Fry Society. “It was an unwise move of council to handle this the way it did,” said Mayor Bryan Paterson of the surprise budget amendment. The mayor added: “If this process is about fairness – this is the closest we can get.” In a bid to “fix” their budget decision, councillors decided to add more conditions before Dawn House can receive any of the $155,000. Many complained that because Dawn House did not make a formal application for ongoing public funding that it would be seen as getting preferential treatment over those agencies that did apply. Coun. Adam Candon’s approved Feb. 3 motion requested that Dawn House provide the city with a detailed operational and business plan
before any of the extra funding is allowed. “It’s about holding all nonprofits at the same bar.” “They’re going to provide everything that’s needed, and asked for,” assured Coun. McLaren. Scott Whyte, who chairs the agency’s board of directors, promised council that it can justify its use of tax funds and will submit a budget plan very soon. He also noted that Dawn House continues to serve a vital need in the community by providing temporary housing to many of Kingston’s “harder luck cases” who suffer from drug addiction or mental health issues. “We are looking at 30 or 40 women a month that we have to turn away.” Whyte says many Dawn House residents tend to stay in the shelter longer because they are harder to relocate into permanent housing. “Oc-
cupancy rates are higher than you want. We’d love to work ourselves out of business.” Councillors don’t dispute the vital service that Dawn House provides, but say the agency should’ve followed the funding application process as others did. Coun. Kevin George says council’s ad hoc decision to allow one agency to jump the funding queue is an insult to others who followed the application rules. “I find this extremely bizarre.” Coun. McLaren says a misunderstanding was behind Dawn House not applying for continued funding. He says the shelter thought it didn’t qualify because municipal funding was only being offered to co-ed facilities. However, community services commissioner Lanie Hurdle says that was never the case and all
agencies were given the same application instructions. Hurdle also assured council that the city’s move to a housing first model – placing more emphasis and dollars into long-term housing needs for the city’s most vulnerable – will not result in any immediate reduction in emergency shelter beds. Kingston currently funds 74 beds in different shelters, including Dawn House. As of July, a total 84 beds will receive subsidies under the Housing First model. However, that formula has changed following council’s unexpected decision. Adding Dawn House to the revised funding mix will actually increase the city’s shelter capacity to 94 beds, Hurdle explained. She says it’s additional money the city did not budget for and now has to find.

Heritage news- There is no doubt about it. There are serious concerns at this time about the provincially operated ferry service (MTO) to Wolfe Island. Although talking about it has a tendency to cause concern for island business operators about the future of their island businesses, tourism and economic development generally . The hope being that in not talking about concerns, they might just all go away. But instead, Frontenac Islands Councillor Wayne Grant brought forward a new and significant concern at the February council meeting where he introduced correspondence he received from islander Dr. Janine Handforth (Posthumus) on behalf of the dairy producers on Wolfe Island, addressed to the Dairy Farmers of Ontario, and written to raise awareness of potential issues that could arise “in the next short period of time” should an OPSEU strike come to pass. Dr. Handforth pointed out that as one of four Wolfe Island dairy farms, the only link to Kingston is via the MTO ferry. “The employees of MTO are members of OPSEU and could walk off the job if a strike occurs,” she says noting certain essential factors. One that the milk transporter, from the mainland, comes every other day to pick up the milk from the four milk producers. Without an island outlet, livestock feed is delivered from the mainland, as is gasoline and diesel fuel twice weekly for the operation of farm machinery since there is no island fuel depot. If there are veterinary services, or issues pertaining to milking equipment and machinery etc., service providers must come from the city. Their fees include travel and time spent on the island. These service providers receive no preferential travel status on the ferry There were clear reminders by Dr. Handforth about the last strike, when picket lines were set up and the Essential Services Agreement, established between the OPSEU union and the province, set three round trips in the morning and three in the late afternoon. The remainder of the time the “boat” was anchored whether there were vehicles waiting in line for transport or not. (The regular schedule of the Wolfe Islander III ferry from Wolfe Island is 19 roundtrips per day and any extra emergency trips.) Following some discussion it was determined that the Township of Frontenac Islands will send a letter to the Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca, M.P.P. Kiwala, & MTO Regional Director Kathryn Moore, identifying87 the negative impact of reduced ferry service on Wolfe Island residents, farmMo ck

City council to school board: This land is our land, not your land Editorial – Sometimes, council meetings are just like the movie Groundhog Day. Issues, once thought dealt with and over, just keep coming back as a political re-run. Such was the case over whether to study the Memorial Centre grounds for a new high school. This instantly contentious issue surfaced several times in the previous council term and, each time, the outcome was the same. Council passed motions telling the Limestone District School Board to essentially ‘Keep off our grass!’ The most recent debate on Feb. 3 – which, ironically came the day after Groundhog Day on the cal-
endar – saw a delegation from the school board and student body appear before council to gnaw at the issue one more time. What with councillors and trustees newlyinstalled, perhaps a fresh approach was in order? Comments of desperation, frustration and cooperation crept into the latest debate, as school board chair David Jackson stated his case for council to at least study the pros and cons of building a school on the southwest corner of the Memorial Centre grounds, site of the Agricultural Society barns and the only corner of the 24-acre midtown park that hasn’t been upgraded. As Jackson candidly stated: “The best location is sites you own, not us. Could the city, please, just explore its property options and not limit the scope of “thoughtful consideration, he urged. But this council, like the last one, was in no mood to give away the farm, so to speak. Turf talk
about protecting the Agricultural Society’s long-standing right to use the property, the city’s multi-million dollar recreational investments around the Memorial Centre, and limited park space in the Kingscourt and Williamsville neighbourhoods became the familiar battle cry for rejection. Councillors voted to reaffirm earlier decisions to keep this midtown jewel out of the school board’s hands. But, as a gesture of goodwill, Site B – Kington’s version of Isla Sorna – was suddenly thrust into the spotlight. Councillors agreed to loosen their grip and let the board investigate another city-owned site, known as Katings pasture/Cook Brothers in the city’s old industrial park. It’s a mostly undeveloped, and probably contaminated, site that’s sandwiched between Montreal and Rideau Streets. Kinda off the beaten path for high school students to get to once KCVI and QECVI are closed, but the board
isn’t complaining. It’s not as if central Kingston has plenty of 11-to-16 acre tracts of land for sale to accommodate a new combined school and its sports fields. Some councillors got defensive when it was suggested the city should be doing more to help the school board find available land. Coun. Peter Stroud says the board made its bed, and the city shouldn’t be expected to solve a problem that trustees created. That may be true, but let’s not forget something else: elected councillors and school trustees represent the same constituents, even though the latter lacks the power of taxation. Many of those constituents have families, and their sons and daughters may end up at this new $36 million school. So, the city should resist the urge to score political points through fingerpointing and work with trustees on a common solution, just as they did
with the track and field facility at the Invista Centre. As Jackson observed, he went to council seeking two potential school sites and came away with one. We await the outcome of technical studies of the Kastings/Cook Brothers site. This groundhog issue is sure to pop up again.

My organiz-ized life You know that scene in Taxi Driver where Robert De Niro tells Cybill Shepherd that one of these days he’s going to get organiz-ized? Sometimes I feel like that phrase is the story of my life. I am not an organized person by nature, though I long to be. My house is messy and cluttered and it drives me insane. I know it’s possible to live in a home with a toddler and two adults who work full-time and not have it be a whirlwind of laundry and dishes and toys and dog hair and smashed up crayons – I’ve seen it done. I just have no idea how these people do it. There is simply so much to do – cooking, dishes, wiping up/scrubbing spilled food, folding and putting away clean laundry, sweeping/vacuuming up dust and dirt and dog hair, taming the explosion of toys and art supplies. That doesn’t even get into the time that parenting takes. I usually work well over 40 hours a week and Steve has been lately, too. When we’re home, we want to spend time with Summer - reading to her, playing
with her, teaching her the alphabet. We’re also in the middle of potty training, which in itself takes up a lot of time. Granted, we usually spend about an hour before bed watching Netflix. Maybe this is when organized people would do their organizing. Still, even if we spent this time being productive, I’m certain we wouldn’t get to everything that needs to be done. Plus, this hour is one of my favourite times of the day – I really don’t want to give it up. I’ve griped about this subject for years, and I think I’ve even written about it before here, but lately I’ve begun to get more serious in my quest for cleanliness and organization. A few months ago, Steve and I bought a brand new house; it’s so new it hasn’t even been built yet, but we’ve chosen everything for it – the colours and the cabinetry and the style of flooring. We move in at the end of June and it’s been a really long time since I’ve been this excited about something. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to me to develop the habits I know it will take to keep this house beautiful. I’m obviously no expert, but I think that moving in with minimal “stuff will be key, along with being mindful of how much “stuff we bring into the house after we move in.
Kanata Kourier-Standard
However, getting rid of “stuff is a challenge in itself. I gave away over 100 of my books last fall, but it barely even made a dent. And I don’t think anyone wants our broken toaster, broken coffee maker, broken pots and pans, etc. When you’re already drowning in daily housework to try and avoid living in a disgusting cesspool, it’s hard to find the time to figure out a responsible and reasonably sustainable way to dispose of these kinds of things. Still, when I set my mind to a goal I’m usually able to achieve it, and I think I may finally have the motivation necessary to de-clutter my life. First, I will write out a step-by-step plan detailing what needs to be done. That’s what organized people do, right? I think it will go something like this: Step 1 – Get rid of anything in my home I don’t believe to be either beautiful or useful. Step 2 – Develop a routine that will allow my family to stay at least somewhat on top of daily chores. I realize more specific goals are required, but it’s a start. I’m open to suggestions from those of you out there who are organized regarding what can be done to improve my plan. With any luck, by the time we move into our new house I will have become less organiz-ized and more organized.

In Our Opinion
Is it 1984?
Editorial – It may be the year 2015, but with more and more developments in technology, our world is starting to feel increasingly Orwellian. The number of internetconnected objects now out-numbers humans and between location trackers, voice sensors, Bluetooth enabled devices and social media it is becoming harder and harder to get around without feeling like ‘big brother’ is watching you. Last week, media outlets went after Samsung for their latest Smart TV, claiming that it was invading consumer’s privacy. The TV in question has voice recognition software in it that allows the owner to control the volume, change channels and do numerous other commands with their voice. This sounds great, but it was also revealed that the TV can eavesdrop and record the conversations of those watching it. Smart TV’s aren’t the only things invading our lives and personal spaces. LG just announced their new refrigerator that can send grocery lists to phones and warn consumers about upcoming expiration dates inside. Intel and Ford are even working together on a face recognition system for cars that will only allow recognizable faces to drive. While technology is considered a good thing in most cases, we have to wonder if all of this is getting to be a bit too much. Is technology reaching the point where it is not only invading our privacy, but also starting to become a form of surveillance? While major companies and the developers of these products have gone on record to say that none of the information they collect will be sold to a third party, many consumers aren’t so trusting. There is also the possibility that information collected by these products could be hacked and used against consumers. We’ve seen examples of this with password hacks and personal information hacks from credit card companies, but these scenarios could become much worse. We know that in the digital age privacy is less of a factor, especially considering how much of our lives are already online for the world to see, but it is scary to think that someone can listen to your conversations in front of the TV. Perhaps we need to rethink a couple of these developments or at least rethink the security measures that come with them, as long as they don’t include the Thought Police. $6 million needed for second mri at KGH
O
ur region is fortunate to have the best stroke care possible, but our care providers need access to the best tools to provide that care. It is very import to have access to diagnostic information, in a timely fashion. Earlier diagnoses, better treatments and improved outcomes will result from the installation of a second tertiary care MRI. As KGH’s role in providing the highest level of specialty care (such as cancer care and stroke care) has grown, access to critical equipment such as MRI, has not. The province will provide ongoing operational funding for a second machine, but the community needs to raise the $6 million needed for the purchase and installation of the equipment. The need is clear. At any given time, there are 850 people waiting for an MRI at KGH. It is where the most complex scans are completed in the region. Anyone who is well enough and can be served at a communitybased clinic is referred there. Scans that must be
done at KGH are those that require special skill sets, equipment and services such as general anesthetic for children. Those waiting for MRI scans are prioritized by need. But because of the growing demand in our region, far too often, appointments are cancelled because a more urgent patient needs to be scanned. Imagine having a child who requires MRI scans every three months to monitor brain cancer and learning that the earliest they can get in is every five months. More specialized care and better treatments are also resulting in more demand for diagnostic services such as MRI. This is particularly true with the delivery of cancer
care. Best practices for treatment (known as clinical standards of care) call for MRI in more instances for screening, diagnosis, disease staging, treatment planning and post-treatment assessment. “This is about providing people with access to the imaging care they need, when they need it,” says Karen Pearson, Director of Imaging Services for KGH and Hotel Dieu Hospital. “Not only will it help us meet wait time expectations, but most importantly, it will provide patients and their care teams with access to the information they need to get on with their treatment.”
Rivalry rages on between Frontenacs and Bulls The Kingston Frontenacs gave up a three goal lead at the Rogers K-Rock Centre Feb. 6 and lost 4-3 to their rival Belleville Bulls. 100 years young mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News – Doris Peterson was born at Hotel Dieu Hospital on Feb. 13, 1915; last week the lifelong Kingstonian, now living at Helen Henderson Care Centre in Amherstview, happily celebrated her 100th birthday. “I never really thought about turning 100,” Peterson told the Heritage the day before the big celebration. “I don’t really feel 100. I’m not sure if I feel 50 or 60. It really is just a number and another day.” Peterson grew up on Howe Island under the care of her grandmother. Her mother died at a young age and her father couldn’t support her so her grandmother took over. “She took care of me and she was a good woman,” said Peterson. “She lived to almost 100 too I think.” Peterson got married when she was ‘old enough’ according to her and went on to have five children. Many of these children are now in their 60s and 70s and have children and grandchildren of their own. “I’ve got maybe 500 grandkids,” she joked. “I can’t count them anymore. I’ve met all of them at one time or another.” Many of Peterson’s grand chil-
dren, great grand children and great, great grandchildren came to celebrate her remarkable milestone and while she may not remember them all, she certainly enjoys visiting with them when she can. “I look forward to seeing the people and visiting,” she said. “It keeps me going to have people around and I like to keep moving.” Staying active is one of the things that has undoubtedly kept Peterson going for so long. For many years she worked in downtown Kingston at Abramsky’s furniture. She then moved on to working with her husband, a cheese maker by trade, at the Wilton Cheese Factory. Event at the age of 90 Peterson didn’t slow down too much; she chose to move into the Helen Henderson Care Centre and helped out and worked within the facility whenever she could. “When I sit for too long I could scream. I want to do stuff and stay going. I used to fold towels, help out in the kitchen and do the newsletter. I still help when I can and I like being active and doing things.” Now, at 100, Peterson can’t do as much as she used to, but she still loves to read, sing and recite poetry from memory for anyone who will listen. “Many of the poems and songs I
can remember are from my father. He used to say them and sing them and they stuck with me.” At the request of one of her many granddaughters Peterson is writing done some of these songs and poems as a keepsake for her family. “I’m starting to forget things now,” she said. “I never used to. I should have written everything down, it would have made a great book.” When asked about her secret to living so long, Peterson simply shrugs and attributes a lot of it to her faith. “The good Lord has been good to me I guess. I didn’t think I would live this long. I never even thought about and it seems like it went by so quickly. I’ve had a pretty happy life.”
Doris Peterson celebrated her 100th birthday on Feb. 13.

Hotel Dieu adult eating disorders clinic unveils new kitchen facility during awareness week By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News – Talking saves lives. That was the theme of this year’s eating disorder awareness week (Feb. 1-7), and staff at Hotel Dieu’s adult eating disorders clinic were certainly practicing what they preach. The clinic held numerous events last week, as well as an open house to raise awareness about adult eating disorders. “In Canada there are approximately one million people who struggle with eating disorders and there is an even larger number of people who go unnoticed or unrecognized,” explained Mac Neil. “We really want to encourage conversations about eating disorders and break down some of the stigma associated with them. By inviting the public into our space here, I hope we can do that.” Members of the community and even other medical professionals in the hospital were invited to attend and take part in numerous workshops and information sessions, and even an event entitled the ‘Northern Smash’. “It is our version of an event that was started in the Southern United States,” explained Mac Neil. “To raise
awareness for weight-based stigma they invite people to bring in their scales and write a message of hope or recovery on it and then they smash all of them together. We have collected quite a few scales so it should be good.” As part of awareness, week the clinic also unveiled brand new kitchen facilities that were funded by Scotiabank and will allow staff to run lunch programs to help patients work through food fears and social eating issues. “The need for the kitchen came from the clients themselves, really,” explained clinic member and registered dietician Sandra Leduc. “They struggle with eating so we thought why not create the environment they struggle with and help them that way too.” Lunch programs have already started within the clinic and Leduc hopes that they can expand further and create cooking groups. She hopes the kitchen will be a positive space for patients and thinks that is will really help with their treatment overall. “It is definitely something they all struggle with. Whenever we help patients with treatment they often strug-
gle when they go home and are on their own, especially in the kitchen,” added Leduc. “I think because they struggle so much in this environment we can really get to the root of the problem with this program and this facility.” Mac Neil also hoped to raise awareness about the treatment programs that are available at the clinic throughout awareness week. Often he hears that long wait times are a deterrent for patients seeking treatment, but with recent expansions and improvements over the years the adult eating disorders clinic at Hotel Dieu has been able to cut down those waits significantly. “This is an opportunity for folks to learn that there are treatment plans available and how many of them are in fact available. Our wait times are pretty good and we estimate about 4-6 weeks. We also allow people to start treatment the day after their team assessment and we’ve been able to do that as we’ve expanded over the years.” For more information about the Hotel Dieu eating disorders clinic visit http://www.hoteldieu.com/programs-and-departments/adult-eating- Psychologist Brad Mac Neil and registered dietician Sandra Leduc in disorders-program the clinics new kitchen facilities. Niko Carrillo, 12, is currently being considered for a supporting role in The Trap with Benicio Del Toro and Jamie Fox, and Jeff Ellenberger, 31, recently auditioned for a supporting role in The Reverent starring Leonardo DiCaprio. He ended up being one of the top 20 final choices, but in the end the role went to Domhall Gleeson of Harry Potter fame. “He was brand new actor and really hadn’t done anything before,” Godefroy says of Ellenberger. “He came to one of my open calls and did a monologue from Good Will Hunting. I was like, where have you been? He said he always wanted to act but just never did it before.” Godefroy is holding another open call on Sunday, Feb. 22 at Queen’s Theological Hall from noon – 3 p.m. She says this kind of event makes it a lot easier for her to choose who she will repre-

We may have a difference of opinion. There may be somebody championing for someone that initially I may not like and I’ll take a second look. It’s just a great opportunity to meet new people and see what kind of talent is actually out there.” SoHo is also offering 15-week TV/film acting classes for teens (ages 11-17) and adults from March 5 to June 17 in Kingston (excluding March Break). “Kingston is such a great community, and it’s an art-based community,” notes Godefroy. “I think it’s phenomenal that finally we’re able to get these people out there and give them the opportunity that they would never normally have unless they were living in Toronto.” For more information, visit www.sohomgmt. com, or contact Tammy at tammy@sohomgmt. com or 613-583-0952.

In the uber village called New York, millions of people mingle in hundreds of small neighborhoods and communities. Street smart and gritty, those people who inhabit one of the world’s greatest cultural centres are also the friendliest. They tolerate anything and have lived through everything. They look out for each other. We look out for each other. I’m torn between calling Canada and New York home. When I’m away from the City, I crave its energy. I have heard from quite a number of people heading to New York over the March break, so I think it’s time for another love letter to the city of aspiration. From fine cuisine to street vendors, world class museums to underground (literal and metaphoric) performance art, the New York City Ballet to spontaneous dance in Washington Square Park, from renowned jazz musician Ron Carter at The Blue Note to a busker in Central Park, you won’t find greater expressions of art and culture anywhere. Period. Countless songs have been written about New York and recorded there. What musician doesn’t want to call New York home? From John Lennon and David Bowie to Patti Smith and Taylor Swift, they all end up living in New York. Where else would you hear about someone like the late Lou Reed showing up in person when he heard there was going to be a public listening of his first album to commemorate its anniversary? Mr. Reed walked into the gathering in a bar and sat and listened, along with his fans. As for film, a lengthy list of movies and TV segments are filmed there every year. A love affair with New York
R0013141877
coffee and cookies on a cold winter day. I asked if I could take his photo. He was okay with that. I ended up selling a copy of the photo for a nice price a few months later. When I found Larry to share the money with him, he told me, “No, man, just give it to the shelter. That way we all benefit.” That’s my New York. That’s the New York I know and love. If you’ve never been to New York, I’d advise spending your first trip just getting oriented. New York is a wonderful, walkable city. Once you understand the street grid, it’s hard to get lost. That statement goes out the window when you are south of 14th Street in Manhattan. Then you’re looking at the lines of the old Dutch settlements. Streets radiate from central squares and turn every which way. It’s easy to get lost. But that makes it fun. Just start wandering Greenwich Village. It gets even more chaotic south of Grand Street and into Chinatown and the Financial District. If you’re exploring south of 14th, keep a map with you. If you’re into jazz, The Garage at 99th 7th Avenue, at the #1 Metro stop at Christopher Street/Sheridan Square, is one of my favorite locations. There’s live jazz nightly (until 2:30 a.m.) and all day on Saturday and Sunday. Don’t be surprised to see Grammy winners get up on stage to jam. The food is great or you can just sit at the bar and listen. There’s no cover charge. I’m often asked what some “must-see” sites are in the city. That’s difficult to answer. Depends on your interests. If you’re into art, obviously MoMA (Museum of Modern Art); for theatre lovers, there is no end of live theatre. You’ll see the finest performances in the world in Broadway and offBroadway productions. The scripts gets edgier (meaning, to me, better theatre) off-Broadway.
The only difference (aside from off-Broadway costing half the admission price) is that Broadway theatres seat 500-plus and offBroadway venues seat 100 to 499. Sometimes, shows are testing the waters off-Broadway before moving to Broadway. Some of the best and most powerful plays I’ve seen have been off-Broadway. You’ll see the same actors in either setting. Famed Broadway (and TV) actor Bebe Neuworth and film star Cristina Ricci performed in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in a small off-Broadway theatre. So do not hesitate to take in a good offBroadway show. If you are a theatre lover, don’t miss Alan Cumming in Cabaret. You won’t see a better actor than Cumming or a quirkier, yet very touching, show than Cabaret. It’s closing on March 29, so this is your last chance to catch it. New York’s Central Park is an absolute must during a visit. Central Park is a free adventure. You can relax and be entertained. Musicians busk in many locations. There’s breathtaking scenery and beautiful bridges, along with fresh air and exercise. Many visitors have fun recognizing locations from movies or TV shows. Don’t be surprised if you see your favorite actor with a child in tow or walking the dog. I spend a fair amount of time in Central Park to get away from the sensory overload of the city.

As for getting to New York, there are only two ways I’d travel. By plane or Amtrak train from Syracuse. I love trains, and you can get from Syracuse to Penn Station (34th St) for about $110 return (CAA/AAA gives you a 10% discount). Seriously, I can’t get to Toronto for that amount. Amtrak has free wifi, a club car, and you can change your itinerary without outrageous change fees. Next week, I’ll look at how to be a tourist in New York, and, more importantly, how to not act like a tourist. Mark Bergin on Twitter @ markaidanbergin.

Sunday service was starting thanks to Herman Lifestyle - There was a lot to grab my attention in church every Sunday, and it wasn’t always what the minister had to say from the pulpit. If the truth be known, I had trouble trying to figure out what he was talking about, as he flailed around pounding his bible on the rail. I was much more interested in waiting to see the well worn black book go flying into the congregation, which I was sure would happen. It would just be a matter of time. And then there was his wife, who Mother said was a pure angel. She sat ram-rod straight, and my brother Emerson said the whole place could blow up and he doubted if she would blink an eyelash. I would spend many minutes waiting for any movement from her, which never came all the time we went to the Lutheran Church in Northcote. Of course, I was keenly interested in seeing what the girls I
went to school with had worn to church. And so that cut a fair bit of time out of the church service too. If one wore a new hat (even very young girls wore hats to church) I looked at it with envy, and I was reasonable sure I was committing a mortal sin by doing so, and was right up there with stealing pennies off the collection plate. And then there was old Herman. He sat by the East window, and I spent many minutes staring at his very bald head. It had a glow to it, which my brother Emerson said got that way because he rubbed it with goose grease before he came to church. My sister Audrey said that was pure nonsense. Goose grease was for shining your boots, not to be wasted putting a shine to a bald head! Some Sundays I couldn’t take my eyes off old Herman. He was known to consume a little too much of his homemade brew on a Saturday night, and it wasn’t unusual for him to come to church the worse for wear. He would be alright when the church service was just beginning, but with the hot sun beating on his bald head, the old stove belting out heat, and the droning on of the minister, it
didn’t take long for old Herman to drop his head to his chest. And every few minutes he would waken and snap his head up, only to lose consciousness again seconds later. Well, one Sunday, right in the middle of winter, there was someone else in old Herman’s seat! And yet, it looked like old Herman...same bulbed nose, halfshut eyes, but the shiny head was gone! What was on his head looked very much like a tight hat of fine brown straw, and I wasn’t the only one glued to old Herman! Every eye in church was on him. Emerson started to laugh until Mother gave him a poke that settled him down in a hurry. I thought even the minister paused on his way up to the front of the church leading the choir, as his eyes fell on the sight in Herman’s pew. My sister Audrey, who Mother always said was smart beyond her years, leaned close to me and said, “of course it’s Herman...he’s gotten himself a wig.” I had never seen a wig in the Northcote area before...there were a few in the town of Renfrew I knew, but not out in Northcote!!!

Local Business moving into National market Debbie Lloyd, owner of The Travel Broker & Cruise Centre says she’s amazed that her company is already into its 4th year in their new location. She opened The Travel Broker with her husband at the Bath Road location back in 1977 and together they built a company completely on the local community here in Kingston. “Like many companies our business was greatly changed by the internet and had to reinvent ourselves in order to survive.” After her husband died Debbie decided to keep the business and bought a lovely old home on Sydenham Road and moved her travel agency into it. The Travel Broker & Cruise Centre decided to stay local and to concentrate on custom travel for their clients and specialties such as destina-

For the photographer Scotland has it all - great land and seascapes; architectural gems; wildlife and “hairy coos”; colourful kilts, weathered faces - it’s a great place to improve your photo skills. It is the Scots and their great sense of hospitality which makes the overall experience so enjoyable - “will ye no come back again?” is said with sincerity and real hope. Well, the service went on, and I lost interest in looking for new hats, and keeping a close eye on the Minister’s wife...my sight was glued to old Herman. That Sunday, we could have gotten along without the heat from the old stove, because the sun was pouring in through the East window, and of course, right onto Herman. I don’t think the minister was into his sermon five minutes when old Herman’s head fell to his chest. That in itself was not unusual, and to be expected. What wasn’t expected was what happened to the wig. It fell over his eyes with his first head-drop, and stayed there! It sat on his nose completely blocking his vision. With the curved seats in the pews it was impossible not to see what was happening. The minister’s voice got louder and louder. And it wasn’t until the organist pumped her feet on the two felt pedals with force and brought her hands down with a bang on the keys to start a hymn that old Herman came to. Of course, he couldn’t see a thing. The wig covered the front of his bald head right down to the tip of his nose. That in itself was enough to startle the whole
church, but what it did to old Herman was something to behold. He must have forgotten for the moment that he was wearing a wig, because he was blinded by it, and yelled in a voice that could be heard in the United Church down the road. “Where am I? What’s goin on?” Mr. Kallies, sitting right behind him, grabbed the back edge of the wig and righted it, allowing Herman to realize where he was. His face turned beet red, he grabbed the wig off his head, crammed it in his pocket, and bolted. He didn’t even wait for the plates to be passed for collection. As always at the Lutheran Church, after the service, people mingled at the back and had their visit. Not a word was mentioned about the wig or old Herman. But on the way home in the double cutter, my brother Emerson said the church service that day was as good as going to the picture show in Renfrew on a Saturday night! Design in Mind, Don’t be Afraid to Colour your World The most important goal of an interior designer is to help project your personality and taste throughout your home using furniture, accessories and colour.
Colour can be a very helpful tool in creating a specific mood in a room, so don’t be afraid to ‘colour your world’. Changing the paint on your walls or ceiling is an inexpensive but highly effective way to revive, reinvent or revitalize any space. Do you want your kitchen to feel bright and homey or create a bathroom oasis? Red is warm colour that is associated with the sun, fire and heat; it can evoke appetite and is especially effective in an eating or dining area. Blue is considered a cool colour and reminds us of water or the
sky and has an extremely calming effect, so it is particularly effective in a space in a home where you relax and unwind.
Interior designers recommend soft colours in large spaces such as your walls, ceiling and floor and bright colours for small areas that include your furniture and window coverings. The designers at Tall Pines Interiors will work with you to build a colour scheme in your home based on your personal taste and comfort levels. Visit their website http://www. tallpinesinteriors.com/services. html for more information on their services. An interior designer will also consider: • The shape and structure of the room • Architectural features such
as doors, windows and fireplaces • Sun exposure and temperature of a space • The character and intended function of a room The designing experts at Tall Pines Interiors can help transform a dull and uninspired room into a space that is inviting and bright. Tall Pines Interiors uses colour, lighting, furniture and draperies to create an environment that reflects your personal tastes and a space that you will love for years to come. See their website for a complete list of their products http://www. tallpinesinteriors.com/products. html. The importance of shopping for mortgage terms before buying your dream home The real estate experts, William Taylor and Shane Ruys http://www.kingstonagents.com/ at the renowned real estate organization, Century 21 in Kingston help their clients understand all the requirements of purchasing a home. Many prospective homebuyers delay mortgage financing and prospecting of mortgage rates and terms, which is a grave oversight. Before looking for your next home, take some time to do strategic planning. Get pre-qualified by the bank or mortgage broker that you choose in order to discover whether you qualify for financing. This will save you time and energy of searching for homes in the wrong price range. Pre-qualifying gives you peace of mind, helping you narrow your search criteria. Further, pre-qualifying for a mortgage provides a negotiating edge by alleviating the seller’s concern over financing, which is especially important in a competing offer. Therefore, it is crucial that you do your homework beforehand and consult the mortgage experts http://www.kingstonagents. com/links/. If you hold a good credit rating and take advantage of services such as RRSPs, savings accounts and others, you will be more likely to benefit from a lucrative mortgage rate. Ask whether the bank will cover appraisal fees, buy-out fees, penalties, payment options, and portability. Inquiring about mortgage financing http:// www.kingstonagents.com/articles/ can save you enormous dollars over the life of the mortgage. Along with understanding mortgage options, you must also be cognizant of the full cost of home buying such as legal fees, transfer tax, property taxes, new home landscaping, fencing, appliances, window coverings and more. Be aware of the potential costs that you are willing to put into increasing the market value of your home over time such as basement renovations and additional upgrades. After all, Taylor & Ruys believe that buying a new home is a significant and valuable investment and you deserve the best! Things to consider before downsizing your home The decision to downsize a home is often bittersweet. Many couples who downsize their homes do so after raising a family. A home might be filled with memories, but downsizing a home helps couples save more money, and that financial flexibility often allows men and women to more fully enjoy their retirement. But in spite of the financial impact of downsizing a home, there’s more than just money at stake for homeowners thinking of downsizing their homes. The following are a handful of factors homeowners should consider before downsizing to a smaller home. Real estate market The real estate market can be a seller’s friend or foe. Many sellers have a sale price in mind when they decide to sell their home, but the real estate market can be fickle, so homeowners should do their research before putting their home up for sale. Will the current market make it easier for you to get the most for your home, or will you have to settle for less than you prefer? How fast are similar homes in your area selling? When studying the real estate market, it’s also a good idea to study the market for smaller homes. If you plan on moving into a condominium but the market is not flush with properties, you might end up paying more than you want to for your new home, which might negate the savings you can expect from downsizing. Furniture When downsizing to a smaller home, many couples realize their current furniture is unlikely to fit into a smaller home. That means couples will
have to sell or donate their current furniture and then buy all new items for their new home. If it’s been a while since you purchased new furniture, you might be in for some sticker shock on your first visit to the furniture store. Another thing to consider regarding your furniture is which items you simply can’t live without. An antique dinner table might have been the centerpiece for your family holidays over the last several decades, but there’s no guarantee it will fit into your smaller home. You may want to pass this down to your son or daughter, but that’s only possible if he or she has the room for it. Before deciding to downsize, consider your attachment to certain items that you may or may not be able to take with you to your new home and the emotional toll that selling such items might take if you’re left with no other options. Proximity to family When downsizing to a smaller home, many couples move out of the suburbs and into cities or towns with more ready access to culture and restaurants. While that accessibility is great, grandparents may find that it comes at the cost of less time with their grandchildren. That’s a steep price to pay for doting grandparents, and it may also impact your children if they frequently rely on grandma and grandpa for babysitting. Before downsizing, consider if you’re willing to move further away from your family. If not, you likely can still find a smaller home in close proximity to your current home and any nearby family members. Medical care
Many older men and women must also consider the effect that moving may have on their medical care. Downsizing to a home in the country may make it harder to maintain contact with your current physician, and rural areas typically have less medical practitioners than more densely populated

towns and cities. In addition, if you have been visiting the same physician for years, you may not want to move and have to start all over again with a physician who is unfamiliar with your medical history. Consider how much maintaining your existing relationship with your physician means to you, and
