Toronto architect eyes restoration of old Kingston broom factory By Bill Hutchins
News – A Toronto company with an eye for design has expressed an interest in acquiring and restoring the old Bailey Broom factory at 305 Rideau Street. The city bought the property from Rosen Fuels for $735,000 last year as part of a land acquisition for the proposed Wellington Street extension, and originally planned to demolish the long-vacant industrial building. But a public outcry persuaded council to find an interested buyer to “acquire, restore and repurpose” the 100 year old building. Despite initial interest from several developers, only one company has expressed a serious interest in owning and fixing up the property. Staff will now begin negotiations with RAW Design Inc. of Toronto to get a detailed proposal for the building’s restoration. Coun. Richard Allen expressed surprise that just one company stepped forward out of 30 potential bidders. “Where did the interest drop off?” he wondered. Commissioner Cynthia Beach says it’s not unusual to get only a few serious bids for projects like this one. “It is a Brownfield with a designation as heritage,” she explained. Staff expressed optimism in RAW Design’s background, adding in a March 3 information report that the company has the “technical experience to stabilize the building, the financial capacity to complete a development of this type, and sufficient development experience with heritage buildings and brownfield properties.” The outcome of negotiations should be finalized this summer for council to determine whether the old factory Kingston’s St. Patrick’s Day parade took place on Saturday, March 7. After a commemoration to Kingston’s Irish immigrants at can find a new use.

News – Budget season is once again here in Loyalist Township. On March 9, Mayor Bill Lowry and Loyalist Township Council officially approved their 2015 operating budget; while budgeting is often difficult, Lowry explained that this year the municipality took a new approach to the process. “We decided to utilize our Strategic Plan that was developed at our last new council election four years ago,” said Lowry. “We worked really hard four years ago, but unfortunately we had left it on the shelf. It was time to either revamp the plan or try to follow it and that is how we started with budget talk this year.” The Strategic Plan helped council identify areas of need within the municipality, but that also meant spending money. “We realized that everything we wanted to do, services, manpower and whatever responsibilities we wanted to take on from that plan were going to cost us,” said Lowry. “When we started the meetings it was tough because we were looking at significant change. We have a smaller staff here and when we started thinking about adding a few part-time or fulltime staff members that was dramatic.” Council identified a need for more staff in recreation services, engineering and planning and development. They want to make sure development in the area is running smoothly and that those who wish to take advantage of recreation services are able to do so, especially in terms of registration times. “Our user friendliness needs to be adapted,” explained Bob Maddocks, CAO for the township. “We need to be more accommodating to our residents and we need to prevent losing business to our neighbours simply because they allow registration on evenings and weekends.” Council also started looking at strategic marketing for the municipality and improving economic and retail growth, something they have struggled with for a number of years. Residential growth has been occurring quite easily in the area, but council wants to see more businesses coming into the area. “At this point we feel that we have everything in place in terms of infrastructure, availability, and growth to sustain the growth,
but we don’t have the interest of the entrepreneurs,” said Lowry. “From the Gross Strategy Report we received we identified that we have to spend money to market ourselves. We want to take some funds and do some branding and beautification and really get our identity out there.” As a result of all this, the General Rate 2015 Operating Budget for the municipality comes in at $11.7 million, with a Capital of $3.5 million. An average residential property with an assessment value of $232,500 will incur an annual property tax bill of $3,130 (2014 $2,923) which equates to a monthly bill of $261 (2014 $244). The budget incorporates incremental costs related to strategic initiatives including economic development, technology infrastructure and a realignment designed to streamline recreation services. Areas of change include provincial grant funding that has been further reduced from previous years’ levels despite increasing underlying costs, and increases in costs of contracted services. “We went through four budget meetings and we have satisfied ourselves in terms of meeting the strategic plan,” said Lowry. “This is a fresh new start. We are looking forward to the report card and response to all of this because we have made some big changes and we will certainly use that information going forward.” For a complete budget breakdown and more information about the 2015 Loyalist Township budget visit www.loyalist.ca

But it remains unclear whether the school boards will have the time or desire to take part. Councillors voted 9-3 to endorse a motion that invites trustees with the Limestone District School Board and the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board to form a new joint advisory group to discuss issues of mutual benefit and concern. “This motion is about breaking down silos between the institutions,” said Coun. Rob Hutchison, who is behind the initiative. He singled out the pending or future closure of schools as one topic that could benefit the city for additional housing, recreation or cultural needs. Many details still have to be sorted out, including the group’s mandate and composition, but council agreed the joint body’s creation is worth pursuing. City staff have been tasked with sorting out the mandate and approaching the school boards to establish the Kingston-Limestone, AlWood Pellet Sales & Delivery • Harman Stoves Sales gonquin Advisory Working Group (KLAAWG), Earl and Marie Ferguson & Family and will report their findings to council by May 19. Coun. Hutchison explained the intent of his ranges from restoring the century-old Lang Tannery industrial building in Kitchener to designing community greenhouses. Preservation of the Kingston building, one of the few remaining symbols of the city’s industrial past, will hinge on whether the city and RAW design can reach an agreement. The fac-

motion is to establish a regular forum for “collaboration and cooperation.” He quipped: “It doesn’t have to be a big monster. It can be an elf.” Coun. Lisa Osanic also disputed the “monster” reference, noting KLAAWG doesn’t have to meet regularly. “Maybe once a (fiscal) quarter or three times a year.” Coun. Peter Stroud believes that creating another political organization won’t accomplish much, noting rural trustees and inner city councillors may have little in common. “I have serious doubts about whether this initiative will succeed.” Coun. Mary Rita Holland mentioned the “elephant in the room” - the controversial closure of two central Kingston high schools. It has been a source of past friction in the community and council, which has consistently rejected overtures from the Limestone board to consider building a new combined high school on the Memorial Centre property. She says it’s important for the newly-formed group to work on improving relations. “I want to know the work of this group is not just about finding efficiencies … but also improving relationships and building trust.” From a staff perspective, community services commissioner Lanie Hurdle says the elected bodies already have a close working relationship. Ongoing high school location discussions, building a community centre beside Rideau Heights school and past work on building a track and field are examples of staff-level talks. “Those discussions already take place.” She is expected to recommend to council what the joint group’s mandate should be in order to improve direct communication between councillors and trustees, and told council it must include a “buy in” from the boards. Coun. Adam Candon, who opposed the motion, says there are easier ways to open up the lines the communication than creating a formal working body. “That’s what cell phones are for.”

Bayridge students show what a little imagination can do mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News – Problem solving, creativity, teamwork and originality – these are all valuable life skills, and ones that a group of six Bayridge Secondary School students proved they already have. The group competed in a Destination Imagination regional competition in Arnprior earlier this month and took home top marks in their category. “We had a lot of doubts going into it and it really surprised us when we won and did as well as we did,” said group member Bethany Delve. “We competed against a bunch of other schools and this was our first time so we weren’t sure how we would do.” Destination Imagination (DI) originated in 1999 and is now the world’s largest creativity, teamwork, and problem solving program for students. It encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus and frame challenges while incorporating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the arts and service learning. For this tournament, teams were asked to create a ‘feary tale’ skit featuring a story about a fear and a character that deals with and overcomes it. The skit could be no longer than eight minutes and had to be original. “Our skit was about a girl who

is afraid of sharks because her parents are eaten by sharks when she is a baby,” explained team member Lizzy Hiscock. “She is then taken in by a witch who appears to be good, but turns out to be bad, but then her prince comes to rescue her.” The skit was told from the inside of a shark and featured an original song, which the team earned many compliments on. “It so unique and I think it really impressed the judges,” said Bayridge teacher and group supervisor Carol Allmendinger. “The idea behind DI is to allow the kids to have all of the creativity and do all of the work themselves. They certainly did that and it worked out great.” This is the first time that a group from the Limestone Board has competed in DI and some of the students were hesitant at first, but they were very happy with the end result. The group even beat out all of the teams at the event, 53 in total, for the DaVinci award. The award is given for outstanding creativity and while the students believed they met all the criteria, they were shocked to hear their names. “It was for creativity, original song, team dynamic and overall performance,” added Delve. “It was really exciting because we worked so hard, but none of us expected that.” The team now moves on to a Pro-

An open letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper re: addressing Canadian wealth gap
R0013182275_0319
Dear Prime Minister Harper: The Kingston Faith and Justice Coalition is a multi-faith group of citizens who are concerned about matters of social justice. We are gratified to read that Finance Minister Joe Oliver “has agreed with finance chiefs of the world’s largest economies that they should adopt policies to address the growing wealth gap” [Toronto Star Feb. 11, 2015 p A5]. The same report said that “We will also strive to ensure that growth is inclusive, including through policies that address income inequality.” The members of the Kingston Faith and Justice Coalition are aware that the Broadbent institute reported in September 2014 that the top 10 per cent of Canadians saw their median net worth grow by 42 per cent between 2005 and 2012, while the bottom 10 per cent of Canadians saw their median net worth shrink by 150 per cent [Toronto Star Dec. 17, 2014 p A14]. this news story also reported that 80 per cent of those polled by the Institute supported higher federal income tax rates for the richest Canadians and higher corporate taxes. We would like to know what specific measures your government will take to carry out the promised G-20 objective of fairer income distribution. We await your early reply. Yours truly, Jean Gower for the Kingston Faith and Justice Coalition mjeangower@sympatico.ca

Editorial The joys and struggles of spring cleaning I can’t believe that it is finally spring. I had basically given up hope and just accepted the fact that it would be cold and snowy forever, but I am so happy that is not the case. With spring comes new life, fresh flowers, that fresh smell in the air and for some odd reason, a need to clean everything we own and live in. I’ve never really understood ‘spring cleaning’. I get that it has been a while since we’ve been able to open windows and let fresh air in, but does that really mean that we need to go on a cleaning rampage each year? Can’t we just sit back and enjoy the new season? I like to think of myself as a pretty clean person for the most part. I clean on a regular basis and maintain my living space, but I find it easier to take on cleaning tasks in small steps and spread
out over months. One weekend I’ll mop the kitchen floor, another I might take on high dusting and another I may flip the mattress and clean the pillows, but the thought of doing all of these tasks in one weekend makes my head spin. I googled spring-cleaning recently just to see what people suggest in terms of typical tasks. I was shocked to see how many checklists are out there and the insane amount of stuff on them. Martha Stewart has at least an entire year’s worth of cleaning tasks on one list and even then I don’t know how and why you would clean some of the things she suggests. You’d need superpowers to get it all done. The one thing I do agree with in terms of spring cleaning tasks is getting rid of excess junk and things that aren’t being used anymore. I clean out my closet on a regular basis and donate to Goodwill or Value Village and I try to stay on top of mail and paperwork too, but even this can sometimes become overwhelming. I also find myself reminiscing as I go through things. I find it hard to part with old greeting cards, concert tickets or other memen-
Letter to the editor Kanata Kourier-Standard Hydro One – Enough is Enough!

 Kanata Kourier-Standard
Why is it rural Ontarians are paying delivery charges which are almost 1/2 of their actual usage while the big cities such as Toronto pay a flat rate which, I’ve been told is around $35 or less per month? Why are we still paying a “debt retirement charge every month? Surely whatever the debt was must be paid off by now, we’ve been paying it for years. Lastly, why are we paying HST on hydro? Is it not a necessity of life? I’ve been told that you can’t even go off the grid if you have a mortgage because it’s a requirement of the mortgage companies that you have hydro to your residence, so in my opinion, that makes it a necessity!

I have recently joined a group on Facebook, over 5,000 members strong, Hydro One Enough is Enough, that is trying to fight Hydro One and their totally unreasonable billing practices. If you or someone you know is being gouged by Hydro One you
need to join this group and join the fight
to make our billing fair. This FB group is Arnprior Chronicle-Guide organizing protests, contacting MPs, the
Ombudsman, newspapers, radio and TV stations and whoever else will listen to the voice of the people. There is a protest being arranged for this Saturday, March 21 in Kingston at 1p.m. in front of CKWS TV station at 170 Queen Street. If you are concerned about the escalating hydro rates in rural Ontario please make up a sign and join this protest if at all possible. The more people that get involved the better chance we have of making things change.

A second huge protest is being organized for May 13 at 12 noon at Queens Park in Toronto and if you can possibly attend it would certainly help the cause. These will be peaceful protests and permits have& been acquired everything Vice President Regional PublishersoMike Mount is legal.

tos and because of this I still have more junk than I care to admit. Purging is hard. We all inevitably end up with stuff we don’t use anymore, but we usually feel guilty about throwing it out or giving it away, especially if it is something we paid a lot of money for. When my parents moved last spring and I had to pack up all of my stuff, I asked myself if things were really worthy of going into a box to keep. I knew that I probably wouldn’t be unpacking certain boxes at my parents’ new house; they would be waiting for when I have a home of my own someday, which made it a bit easier. I was able to evaluate if the item was something I wanted for the future or not. I think this a good way to look at all of our possessions, especially when we are deciding whether or not to get rid of them. We need to ask ourselves if we would want that item five, 10 or 20 years from now and if the answer is yes then keep it. I know, easier said then done, but for now that is my philosophy and I’m sticking to it, at least until the end of spring-cleaning.

In Prince Edward County you can sign at The Picton Gazette office on Main Street. You can also go online and sign a petition which has over 50,000 signatures so far and growing by the minute!

Become involved and help fight the fight to a fairer Ontario! People are losing their homes, children are not being fed properly and homes are going without heat because of this mess and if we don’t take a stand it will only get worse!

In Our Opinion
Throwing stones from glass houses
Editorial - Last week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper reacted to a federal court decision to strike down the ban on wearing the niqab during citizenship ceremonies by saying to the Speaker of the House “Why would Canadians embrace a practice‌ that is not transparent, that is not open, and, frankly, is rooted in a culture that is anti-women?â€? Then the Twitterverse exploded, and #dresscodePM became a trending topic worldwide.  First of all, we believe that calling a culture with over a billion adherents ‘antiwomen’ is not exactly in the best traditions of Canadian democracy, and people are rightly troubled by the fact that a sitting Prime Minister would paint the entire religion of Islam with the ‘anti-women’ brush in Hansard. In the words of Nickie (@ MuskokaMoneyBag) on Twitter: “Sorry @PMHarper. Believing that women cannot think for themselves & need a White Knight to ride in & save them is anti-womenâ€?. We also wonder: “What would a ‘pro-women’ culture look like? Is it Harper’s Canada? Are we currently living the halcyon days of sexual equality?â€? Over the last decade, the Harper Government has had the opportunity to transform the country’s political, economic and social institutions, but one area that has not received much attention is the promotion of gender equality. Pay equity is still an issue, as is the lack of a comprehensive national day care strategy and the persistent problems of domestic sexual violence, perhaps best illustrated in the government’s unwillingness to engage in a federal inquiry into the hundreds of cases of missing indigenous women. All of these are crises that women in Canada grapple with on a daily basis. Harper would likely argue that this is not the case – that his government has provided more opportunities in the form of $100 monthly cheques ($160 in July!) to all women with children to give them more choice in how to care for their children. However, $1,200 dollars a year isn’t going to do much to help a single mother living in Toronto or Vancouver raise her family. What’s actually required is targeted policy and legislation such as a national daycare strategy that will transform society and enable women to overcome the systemic issues of gender discrimination and inequality. We believe that legislatively compelling women to remove articles of clothing is not the answer to rampant sexism, for all it does is beget feelings of embarrassment and shame at the personal level, while antagonizing an entire group of people at the level of the community. Let’s work together on more positive ways to free women from the binds of s !DVERTISING RATES AND TERMS AND CONDITIONS ARE ACCORDING TO CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING SALES: patriarchy and oppression. the rate card in effect at time advertising published. suburbs, and intensification needs for Inner Harbour lands like the old Davis Tannery site. He urged council to “keep an open mind” when deciding the roadway extension’s fate. But are there alternative solutions the original consultants may have overlooked? A more aggressive study of street widening, intersection improvements, traffic signal optimization, car pooling, enhancing the transit, cycling and walking network, or turning Division, Montreal or Rideau into one-way streets into the downtown may all be considered. Kingston’s routinely-updated Transportation Master Plan already reflects policies that advocate ways to influence travel behaviour. And the city has acted on them, investing millions of dollars for transit express routes, installing speed humps and other traffic calming measures, and relocating main street parking spaces to construct bicycle lanes on Brock and Johnson Streets and, soon, on midtown’s Princess Street. Some of the new councillors are still struggling to get acquainted with the contentious $20 million Wellington file, so their recent decision to do another review of the alternative options will provide some welcome breathing room. But this debate is far from over. The vocal opponents and the transportation experts will undoubtedly clash down the road leaving councillors to determine which solution leads to a better quality of life.

Editorial – There is a growing debate over whether the proposed Wellington Street extension will improve Kingston’s quality of life, or reduce it. Just the mention of building this southern section of the roadway along an abandoned rail line from Bay Street to Montreal Street evokes strong emotions among those fighting to stop it. The Friends of Kingston’s Inner Harbour group is using just about every reason possible to justify cancellation of the controversial road, among them; fewer young people are driving, downtown needs to protect waterfront space, natural trails are better than bicycle lanes, a waterfront road assaults best practices for sustainability, plus it will generate more traffic, noise and safety concerns. “The road is not the right answer,” concluded group spokesperson Mary Farrar in a recent appeal to council. She says the Inner Harbour lands represent so much more for the city’s quality of life in arts, recreation, leisure and open space preservation, which are jeopardized by paving a stretch of it. All may be valid reasons, but there’s another side to this street that should not be ignored. The 2.6 kilometre roadway has long been identified by city planners and consultants as a vital link in the city’s long-term transportation plan for cars, bicycles
and pedestrians. The late parks commissioner Doug Fluhrer, whose namesake park is located at the downtown terminus of the proposed extension, is also said to have recognized the importance of preserving the road right-ofway. A 2006 environmental assessment (EA), which laid the groundwork to justify the twolane arterial roadway, concluded the city’s quality of life would improve with the road link. This statement was based on studies that found “there will not be sufficient north-south road capacity” to handle road traffic even after efforts to increase public transit. The same report noted high traffic volumes on nearby Rideau Street will continue to “worsen” amid downtown intensification, Division Street will be impacted by spillover congestion, plus it found that Kingston lacks an attractive tourism route into the downtown. The original EA said the Wellington extension would also complement the widening of John Counter Blvd. and the future construction of the third bridge crossing, making make the need for another downtown road link even more crucial. It’s important to point out these study results because citizen opponents won’t, and the so-called Wellington ‘champions’ remain mostly silent. Ed Smith, chair of the downtown business association, offered no official position on the politically-charged road expansion, but made it clear the downtown is in a “fragile” state with the loss of anchor stores, retail expansion in the

Landfill Site: Guy Laporte / AECOM and and Caitlin Cook/ Golder Associates attended the March meeting to present the 2014 Wolfe Island Disposal and Ground/Surface water monitoring reports. Both reports indicated that the site ( monitored continuously since 1994) is generally operating in compliance with its certificate of approval, and in terms of ground water quality is in compliance with MOE Guidelines. Laporte also updated council regarding the (2015) closure of the site and the application submitted July 14, 2014 to amend its site’s Environmental Compliance Approval, for a waste transfer station, The Township had determined that the site would take no waste after April 30, 2015 and would be capped by August 2015. (A public meeting to discuss recycling strategy, a Landfill Closure Plan
and waste transfer Information was held in August 2014.) “Processing of the application is going much faster than anticipated,” Laporte acknowledged. “The MOE reviewer has issued a draft ECA accepting everything that was submitted, including the proposed April 30th closure date which is not feasible now, and closing in summer is not desirable.” Guy will recommend a new closing date of September 8 (right after Labour Day) to MOE .” A September closing is necessary to ensure re-vegetation of the site before winter.” An extension would require further MOE and neighbouring property owner approval according to Laporte. 3. Last year the White’s (Rob & Erin) held a successful ‘1st Wolfe Island RoundUP’ . Plans are underway for a similar event July 3-5th. With concerns about ferry service (Frontenac II) at that time, their request to council was for priority boarding for trailers (20+ last year), Friday July 3rd 2 trailers per trip, 9:30 am to 2pm; 1 during am-pm commuter times; 2 after 8 pm. Going home, July 5th-, 1 trailer per trip. The White’s offered this request as a way of reducing wait times, moving trailers in non busier times, and in support of Round Up. (MTO welcomes ideas to reduce congestion) . CAO PLumley will compile a list of those who have been granted

priority boarding status for MTO. 4. WI resident Jarda Zaborovsky requested Water Delivery Service to Wolfe Island residents. The township offered little hope of such a service but will research the liability issues concerning the request. Increasing concern over Ferry Transportation led to major council decisions at Budget Meeting March 11th 1. Frontenac Island Council is calling upon Transport Canada to harmonize the definitions of a short run ferry to align at 5 km found in the Shipping Act for making risk assessments for hazardous goods . “What that’s all about is that Transport Canada has two different documents . One says 5km, the other 3.5km. We want to change it back to 5 km on both documents to end the confusion. MP Ted Hsu has been working with us on this,” Mayor Doyle said. The idea is that this would allow MTO to exclude the winter dock from that restriction when the propane gas trucks are on board, and the township would further encourage MTO to allow for an additional 25 persons when the ferry is at the summer dock where the run is greater than 5km. 2. A petition is being prepared for presentation to the House of Commons, by Ted Hsu M.P., that Transport Canada harmonize the definitions of short-run ferry with the Ca-
nadian Ferry Operators Assn and Frontenac Islands Township. This again relates to the 5km distance which regulates the transport of hazardous goods on the ferry . 3. The Township of Frontenac Islands is calling upon the Province of Ontario to deem the Wolfe Island Ferry an Essential Service. This in anticipation of a labour withdrawal and the move to the Frontenac II with a 35 vehicle capacity service while the Wolfe Islander III is in drydock, already reducing service by 20 vehicles. Combined with the loss of two round trip runs a week for “dangerous goods” the service would be significantly reduced and create very serious if not dangerous social and economic hardship for the island community. News – Frustration has erupted at city council over complaints of the persistent cancellation of some well-known advisory committees. Coun. Jim Neill complained that some nonstatutory citizen advisory committees are not being allowed to meet on a regular basis any more, even when the committee chairs want them to. He says volunteer members are also being shut out as participants. “It’s frustrating to those who put their names forward in good faith waiting to be engaged.” He complains that two particular committees he serves on – Kingston Environmental Advisory Forum (KEAF) and the Memorial Centre advisory board – have barely met in the past year and a half due to an apparent lack of business to discuss. Coun. Neill says the clerk’s office usually requests the cancellations and won’t let committee chairs override the decision or introduce new motions to debate. He brought the matter to council’s bewildered attention March 3 with a motion calling on the practice to stop, noting the ongoing cancellation issue goes against the city’s own procedural bylaw, “All the motion is saying is ‘If we don’t amend the bylaw let’s abide by the bylaw.’” The issue appeared to surprise some councillors and confuse others. Mayor Bryan Paterson called Neill’s motion “unfortunate” and suggested the reason for his mounting frustration is that council must set the tone for crafting policies and the amount of staff workload, not the advisory committees. “They want council to take the lead. Not the committees,” he said of the staff motives. The mayor added: “It’s about who leads and who follows.” But Coun. Neill says if that’s the case then the procedural bylaw, which governs committees, needs to be changed to reflect the top-down approach to governance. He says committee chairs currently have the legal authority to craft their own motions without interference from bureaucrats. His attempt to restore the authority of committee chairs to call meetings and introduce motions was approved in a close 7-5 vote. Mayor Paterson and councillors Ryan Boe-

Let citizen advisory committees do their work, councillor urges hme, Adam Candon, Laura Turner and Liz Schell voted in the minority. Several councillors say it’s hard to understand how the committee system works when they’ve only been on the job for a few months. They wanted more time to observe trends before deciding whether to take action. However, an attempt to defer Coun. Neill’s motion was defeated on a 6-6 tie vote. “I was surprised it created as much angst and debate as it did,” Neill later told reporters of his motion. He says both KEAF and the Memorial Centre board have provided valuable advice to council in past years, noting it was the Memorial Centre board that created the Sunday farmers market. He calls it a frustrating experience when the chairs of both committees are being dissuaded from holding regular meetings due to issues surrounding staff time or any motions that could increase their workload. However, Mayor Paterson predicted the committees will get busier once council maps out its strategic priorities for the four year term, which will take place at the end of March. The city has about 40 committees and boards; some exclusively represented by councillors while others involve a mix of councillors and citizen appointments. The debate comes during a review of the effectiveness of non-statutory citizen advisory committees to determine whether they should be continued, reformed or disbanded. The previous council launched the review of those appointed bodies that advise councillors on a variety of topics such as the environment, Memorial Centre, arts, rural affairs, housing and homelessness, near campus issues and museums.

News - Kingston author Y.S. Lee fell into the genre of young adult (YA) fiction more or less by accident, yet it is a field she has be-
wasn’t until my agent got hold of it and she read it and she said, ‘you know, you realize this is a coming of age story’. And she was right.” Last week, Lee published the fourth and final novel in her Agency series, which chronicles the adventures of teenage spy Mary Quinn in mid-19th Century London. The series was originally intended to be a trilogy, and A Spy in the House was followed up by The Body in the Tower and The Traitor in the Tunnel. Yet Lee felt something was still missing. “It turned into a quartet because I felt that Mary Quinn’s, personal story needed to be wrapped up. I wanted to take one last book and do that.” The new novel, Rivals in the City, contains a stand-alone mystery that can also be enjoyed by readers unfamiliar with the first three books. It also ties up some loose ends regarding Mary’s personal character arc that long-time fans of the series are sure to appreciate. “I had more to say than I initially thought I would have when I proposed the trilogy and mapped things out many years ago,” Lee says. “I was actually feeling a bit inconsistent by the end of The Agency series and I was quite pleased when I finished Mary’s story [in Rivals]. I thought: this feels right,
this feels good.” All the same, she notes that it’s also bittersweet to say goodbye to a world that has been such a big part of her life for so long. “Now that I’m actually walking away from Mary’s story, I feel quite wistful and nostalgic. She [and all the characters] were really good company and so I’m very sad to leave them behind.” As always, Lee is looking forward to the responses she will receive from young readers. “I love how very unselfconscious and unmediated their responses are. I think a lot of times when adults try to talk about [books] they’re concerned about sounding smart enough or insightful and original, whereas when you talk to younger readers it’s just this beautifully unselfconscious emotional response. It’s really fun and really in-
teresting.” Lee notes, however, that young adult fiction is officially marketed for “12 and up”, and indeed many “older” adults who like a good mystery also enjoy her novels. “I hear a lot from readers that are adults and who are reading a lot of YA but are not necessarily Y themselves,” she laughs. At the moment, Lee is hard at work on her next project, a novel set in South East Asia during the Second World War. “I’m doing a ton of really exciting research and really, really enjoying it,” she remarks, adding that “I think this is a really wonderful time to be a reader of young adult fiction. There’s never been more choice and there’s never been more interest out there. It’s a privilege to be part of that.”

Local lawyers travel to compete in ‘Mundiavocat’ World Cup By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News – The World Cup may have taken place last summer, but the Mundiavocat (World Lawyers) Cup is nearing and a team of Eastern Ontario lawyers is hoping for gold. “Our firm received a letter about this tournament and my boss thought it would be fun to put together a team,” explained Warren WhiteKinght, a junior associate at Bergeron Clifford LLP. “It seemed like a cool idea and this year’s tournament is being held in Santiago, Chile so it should be a lot of fun.” French lawyer Vincent Pinatel created Mundiavocat in 1983; he saw it as a fun way to create a network of lawyers around the world and now over 1,800 lawyers and 75 teams from five continents compete in the tournaments worldwide. The tournaments are divided by region and each year there is an Africa Lawyers, Asia Lawyers, Euro Lawyers and America Lawyers tournament. There are also two formats for each tournament, one with 11 person teams and one with five person teams or half-pitch. WhiteKnight and his teammates will be entering the half-pitch tournament with their team six. “We have three lawyers from
Kingston, one from Peterborough, one from Cornwall and one from Smith Falls,” he explained. “We all have a variety of sports backgrounds, but I think it is safe to say we are all fairly out of shape, so I’m not sure how we’ll do.” While WhiteKnight naturally wants to win, he sees the tournament as more of an opportunity to get to know other lawyers in Eastern Ontario and network. “Everyone always says that there are too many lawyers in the world, myself included, but the truth is that the legal community is actually very small,” said WhiteKnight. “It is important to know other people in the community and especially in the Eastern region. We aren’t in Toronto and we are more spread out so we need to try harder to network.” Bergeron Clifford LLP also has offices in Whitby, Perth, Ottawa and Morrisburg and WhiteKnight finds it hard sometimes to make contact in all the areas where they provide service. The firm only focuses on injury law so they constantly have clients looking for lawyers in other areas. “When people come to us for other types of law we want to be able to recommend someone that we trust and vice versa. Lawyers rely on networking and sharing business in that way. This type of
networking opportunity really helps all of us.” The tournament takes place April 1 to 5 in Santiago. While WhiteKnight hasn’t had a practice session with his teammates yet, he hopes to in the next few weeks. “It is difficult to coordinate, especially with our careers and families, but I think we can do it. I think it will be a lot of fun and a good opportunity. We may get beat pretty badly, but it should still be fun.” For more information on Mundiavocat and to follow the team’s progress during the tournament visit www.mundiavocat.com
A group of lawyers from Eastern Ontario will travel to Santiago, Chile for a Mundiavocat tournament on April 1.

Nevermore: hope hovers beyond darkness “Nevermore....a haunting play with a darkly fun script, work-of-art costumes, dance and music in a Gothic manner. Poe lives @nevermorenyc.” There is nothing with which to compare this play. It’s breaking new ground. I could say it reminds me of some bizarre, grotesquely beautiful combination of Gothic, steampunk, Devo meets Rocky Horror meets Edward Scissorhands. And for good measure, throw in the innocent lovable nature of Winnie the Pooh. It’s romantic and terrifying in the same moment. There are deeply tender scenes; there are also disturbing scenes. Nevermore was written, composed and directed by Jonathan Christenson, Catalyst Theatre’s Artistic Director. Bretta Gerecke, also of Catalyst, designed the physical world of Nevermore, including sets, costumes and lighting. That’s a lot of talent in two people. Now multiply that several times and add the entire cast and crew. After its initial Alberta run in 2009 to commemorate the bicentennial of Poe’s birth (January 19, 1809), Nevermore went on the road, touring throughout Canada and then to London, England, where it played at the prestigious Barbican Centre. It touched down at the New Victory Theatre in New York City
for its first run in 2010. That’s when big time producers took note. Radio Mouse Entertainment headed up production.
They brought it back to the City this year. The show starts the moment you enter the theatre. Music sets the tone. Haunting . As Nevermore unfolds, there are times you’ll feel like you’ve

There can never be a more haunting line in literature than, “Quoth the raven, ‘Nevermore.’” Likewise, there is no more memorable theatre than the Canadian production, Nevermore — The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe. The soul of Poe lives on the stage in Nevermore. The show’s poster reads: “His darkest story was his own.” That pretty well sums it up. Born in Edmonton at Catalyst Theatre, Nevermore has made its way over tens of thousands of miles, across Canada, to England and now in a second run in New York City, this time moving up to New World Stages, in the heart of the theatre district. Actor Scott Shpeley, who plays Poe, joined the cast at the show’s inception. Like several others involved in Nevermore, Shpeley trained at the University of Alberta. Six of the seven original Canadian cast members are still with the show. The lone newcomer is an American, Lindsie VanWinkle. “In 2008, I auditioned right out of
school,” said Shpeley. “Ryan [Parker, who plays Rufus Griswold] and I were in the same class. I’ve been really lucky to be part of projects like workshops of new plays and musicals.” Once a show has its official opening, nothing is changed. Usually. Nevermore bends that rule. “It’s been an adventure,” said Shpeley. “This show has broken the mold with changes happening throughout, since the opening. That’s what I love about Catalyst [Theatre]. They’re not scared of diving back into a work and adjusting it.” Shpeley as Poe has a pivotal and crucial role in Nevermore, as I saw it performed last week. “When the show started, I said almost nothing, and only sang twice or thrice,” he said, sounding rather Poe-like. “Now I’ve got bigger songs and more speaking. The narration of the story has changed. The story has evolved. Even the costumes have had to evolve with the show and new things have had to be built or adjusted on stage. The fearlessness and joy that the [Catalyst] company brings into the room is unlike many companies.” Shpeley is spellbinding. It’s difficult to take one’s eyes off of him throughout the show. But the entire cast is special, drawing the audience into their collective and individual worlds. Immediately after the show, I tweeted:

He asks the right questions and challenges you to really think about food. The book is really a movement.” Continued on page 20

Nevermore: hope hovers beyond darkness Continued from page 15
famed Poe stories. “Much in his life was heartbreaking,” said Shpeley. The show opens with Poe holding a massive bound text, asymmetrical in proportions—of course, everything about this show is out of proportion. There’s an oversize quill, which Poe holds onto through much of the show. In that opening scene, Poe blows a cloud of dust off the text, opens it, and then the stories unfold. Like Poe’s poetry and prose, Nevermore has a unique rhythm. It takes a heightened sense of musical awareness for actors to capture that. It’s comes as no surprise to learn that Shpeley is a multi-instrumentalist. He plays piano, drums, bass, guitar (acoustic and electric), cello, accordion and has performed in a nose flute ensemble. “I really like music,” he said. “That’s kind of why I love theatre. When you get a group of actors in theatre or musicians playing together, there’s a community that can do things with and without speaking. There’s nothing else like it that you can build as a community.” He is particularly fond of drums. “It’s the instrument I love playing the most,” he said. “I really dig the drums. The rhythm of Poe’s work is so delicious, so mesmerizing and all of his work has such a unique rhythm.
You hear that in The Bells and in The Conquerer Worm. A lot of the show is Poe’s own words. That fits the rhymes, the images in the show. You’ll see images from The House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Black Cat.” You can also sense traces of Ligeia and The Masque of the Red Death meandering into the script. Shpeley said that he loves the vocabulary of Poe. “I find that theatre can do that really well; you almost hear his voice.” As the curtain closes, you will feel changed, moved by this unique experience, hopeful, despite the great despair that ever threatens to overwhelm us in life. As one audience member said following this seductive stage production: “Don’t miss this show. Don’t waste time on other shows. Just see this.” What’s next for Nevermore. That’s an unknown. I’d love to see this production hit a Kingston, Gan or nearby stage. It’s worth travelling great distances to experience this masterful creation. “The producers are very excited with plans for the show,” said Shpeley. “They’re just as passionate about this piece as we are. They want as many people as possible to see it.” Visit nevermoreshow.com for some video clips. Cast and Creative:
hopped onto the wondrous and scary boat ride in Willy Wonka. Watching the show, awe filled me from beginning to end. One moment it was the costumes, the next the music, then the movement on stage. Rarely have I experienced such a flawless production. The choreography by Laura Krewski is a unique combination of contemporary, ballet, lyrical, even jazz. Like other aspects of the show, dance weaves itself seamlessly into the spell that is being cast for two and a half hours. Is this a musical? Certainly not in the traditional sense. In fact, some promo material calls it a musical play. Actors sing most of their lines, but more like they’re reciting poetry (Poe’s). Is it a play? Again, not in the traditional sense. It’s performance art in that it challenges traditional theatre. It also challenges audiences to combine opposing feelings. The main themes running throughout this production are despair and hope. “For me, this play is important because everything about its style is heightened,” said Shpeley. “What I love is that we ask the audience to live as large as we’re living on stage and to dive into the hope that Poe experienced, as well as his despair, but always his return to hope out of despair. We all go through phases, and we have to find a way back to hope. This guy’s journey through life is like that. He’s got a belief in the world that there’s beauty and love and he’s happy, then sad. Applicant / Agent:
A tale of two very different auto issues and resolutions call the service manager and see what else could be done. They called me back within half an hour, and said the service manager would now send my issue to tech support for review, and he then mentions that my vehicle’s serial number is on the list for piston and ring replacement. I was flabbergasted that they would keep giving me the run-around, and then finally admit that my car was on this list. Within two weeks the dealer calls me and says that they will perform the ring and piston replacement. I agreed, and at the beginning of Feb. 2015 they performed the repair. The rep at the dealer was nice in that he kept me up to date after they pulled the engine apart, and informed of the condition of the cylinder walls along with pictures. Currently I am still in the break in period, and have 2000 km on it, but I have not seen any oil consumption yet; the oil is still at top of dipstick and clean. So at this time I am satisfied with the results, as all I wanted was realistic oil consumption. As I do understand with a high compression engine like this, and the thin oil they use, 0W20 there will be some consumption. I am guessing once it is broken in and I start
to hit higher revs it will use some, but time will tell. Besides I don’t plan on keeping it once the Honda Turbos come out in 2018. Yes I still love my Honda’s.” Thank you, Matthew The second reader’s tale was shorter but much less sweeter. It involved too many emails to print here, so I’ll provide the highlights. It was the tale of a 2009 Toyota Rav4 that was the subject of a voluntary recall involving the vehicle’s rear suspension components. It seemed that two rear adjustable linkages were prone to breaking due to corrosion and the recall involved the replacement of these links along with a sealing procedure that rendered them nonadjustable. The Rav4 had a wheel alignment as part of the process. The technician’s report on the alignment indicated that the right rear wheel was just outside of the manufacturer’s specs but was (in the dealership’s opinion) within acceptable range. Our Rav4 owner took his vehicle to two other repair shops for an alignment check and both agreed with the dealership that the right rear wheel was just beyond spec. This customer repeatedly asked his

Academy Of Learning College http://aolkingston.com/ in Kingston is a private career college registered by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities that helps people find the career they always wanted. The college offers a unique, student focused blended learning environment getting you ready for work in today’s fast paced professional world. If you’ve always loved working with numbers or dreamed about managing the people and processes that keep a successful running, you can study Accounting or Business Administration. If you enjoy taking care of people, you can earn a diploma in Healthcare Administration, and if you are more of a technical computer person, you can study Information Technology. The bottom line is, no matter who you hope to become, you can do it as long as you’re motivated. You can be a living success story for others. http://aolkingston.com/?page_id=270 It’s important to believe that what you want is possible. But of course, life has its challenges, especially if you’re no longer a 20-something. Perhaps you already have to maintain a job to put food on the table, support grown kids who have just finished their own education and plan for life after work as well. Add that to the stresses of day-to-day living and going back to school can be quite the challenge. That’s where the Academy of Learning College in Kingston really excels. They offer flexible class scheduling, classroom friendly
environment and qualified staff who will work with you closely and coach you based on their own real-world experience in your industry of choice. Susan is just one of the amazing students who took full advantage of the academy’s Office Administration program. She had spent 10 years in the real estate industry before a sharp downturn left her unemployed. What was most challenging for Susan was that she was also dealing with health issues at the time and needed to have surgery as a result of a workplace injury. She had hoped to move to Nova Scotia to start a new life but prior to doing so, Susan made the decision to upgrade her skills at the Academy of Learning College as a way of opening new doors for herself. Not only did she open new doors, she blew them off of the hinges, graduating within a year, making the move up East and landing employment! Susan credits the faculty at the Academy of Learning College for teaching her, letting her pace herself and deal with everything going on in her life so that she could become the person she is today. So what do you want to be and what success story do you want to live out? Don’t wait on your dreams anymore. Be the next Susan. Visit the Academy of Learning College website http:// aolkingston.com/ or give the Kingston campus a call today at 613-544-8973 and find your path to becoming the person you always wanted to.

dealership and Toyota Canada for some resolution or adjustment, but none was offered. I was supplied with the alignment specs and in my humble opinion didn’t think the current set up was likely to cause any accelerated tire wear or other problems and I advised the owner to live with it and to have his rear tires checked at regular service intervals for any unusual wear. To add insult to injury, Murphy’s Law decided it needed to be applied to this situation and a few months later the Rav4 developed a loud howling noise from the rear drive axle. Back to the dealership it went and out came an estimate for $3,000 to repair the rear differential. Needless to say, this owner won’t be waiting for the next latest version of a Toyota to grace his driveway. I recently received emails from two readers who displayed an amazing amount of persistence and patience when dealing with their automotive problems and the results couldn’t have been farther apart. This first one needs a little background. Matthew purchased his 2012 Honda Civic Si new in the fall of 2011 and noticed right from the start that it was consuming engine oil (at the rate of about 0.5 L every 1,500 km). He brought this to his dealership’s service department’s attention and asked for a resolution. They began an oil consumption test which required our Civic owner to drop in any time the engine was low on oil so their tech could record the mileage and the amount of oil required to top it up. Our reader got the distinct impression that no repair was forthcoming so in April of 2014 he sent me an email asking for my advice. I found out that his Civic was the subject of a technical service bul-
letin issued by Honda Canada to its dealers indicating that a certain number of their vehicles were subject to oil consumption and that the recommended repair involved the replacement of the engine’s pistons and rings (a rather major process). I provided this info to our reader and almost one year later he was kind enough to supply this followup. “Hello Brian, It has been a year, but my car finally finished the oil consumption test with the Honda dealer, it took longer because they messed the records up a bit. The results were sent into Honda Canada, and by my calculation it was consuming 0.6L/1500km, so it was within an acceptable range (for them), being below 1.0 L/1500km. And needless to say, I got a call from the dealer’s service advisor informing me that because it fell within the acceptable allowance, no further action was required. I called Honda Canada, and talked to a rep who again said there is no issue with my car, and its oil consumption was acceptable. I asked for further investigation, he then asked if the service manager had sent these results to Honda’s technical support division yet. So I said no, and the rep suggested he would

Findlay Oval meant so much during the Depression years It had darkened early that midwinter day, with the sun dipping below the west hill just as we were finishing our supper. Audrey lit two coal-oil lamps, putting one in the middle of the kitchen table, and the other on the washstand that served as a place for our winter mitts, scarves and extra socks. My three brothers did the usual chores that had to be done every night after supper. Everett filled the wood box, stacking it high from the wood piled in the summer kitchen. Emerson gathered up the few scraps from the table and fed Sport, who was eagerly waiting at the back door, well aware of what was coming his way. Earl got down on his hands and knees, and pulled the big white granite basin out from under the icebox and emptied the water into the reservoir of the Findlay Oval. Audrey and I redded up the kitchen, washing the dishes, drying them with the flour-bag tea towels, rubbing the red and white checkered oilcloth, making sure it was spotlessly
and made on the Findlay Oval. All along the very top of the stove was the warming closet. It was seldom used for food, because as soon as a meal was cooked, we were more than ready to sit around the old pine table and dig into it. But it was a wonderful place to dry wet mitts, or heat a towel to wrap around a wet body after our Saturday night bath. Always, and that night it was no different, Father had put blocks of wood around each side of the stove, and our galoshes and rubber boots were propped against the wood to dry out over night. And I knew that when I put on my galoshes in the morning to go to school, my feet would feel that delicious heat long after I had left the house for the three and a half mile walk to the Northcote School. In the winter time, when Mother would bring in the freshly washed laundry from the clothes line, stiff as boards and frozen solid, a wood clothes rack Father had made would be folded out before the Findlay Oval, and that night, even though it wasn’t a wash day, I felt I could smell the sweetness of those frozen clothes that seemed to go right through the house as the clothes
dried from the heat of the stove. And of course, it provided us with the only warmth we would have, with its pipes snaking through the kitchen and poking through the floor upstairs. That night how I wished I could write so that I could put down on paper all that the Findlay Oval meant to us during those Depression years. It would take me forever to print the words. I guessed I would just have to rely on my memory. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Ottawa Farm Journal was in front of me, and so were my crayons, but I had lost interest. My attention was on the Findlay Oval, and it was as if I was looking at it for the first time in my life. I mentally counted all the uses we had from the stove, and I wished longingly that I knew how to write, so that I could put down on paper what the old stove meant to us out there in Northcote. Of course, there was the reservoir at one end. It supplied us with all the hot water we used in the house; our Saturday night baths, the Monday washings, scrub water, and the water we had just used to wash up the dishes. And it was where, when we had a stuffed-up nose, or Mother thought we were getting a cold, we sat close, on a chair, with our heads under a sheet, breathing in the steam from the reservoir. It was the Findlay Oval that made our toast in the mornings. The tin toaster sat over the front burner that had been removed, and four slices could be toasted at one time. And it was that same burner that Mother lifted to singe the chickens before they were stuffed and put in the oven for our Sunday supper, and that night I thought of the popcorn that was so often a treat on a cold winter’s night

clean, and ready for what would be a couple hours of pastimes that kept us busy until it was time to climb the stairs for bed. It was my favourite time of day. It would be a couple hours before we would go upstairs, and the time would be spent sitting around the kitchen table, each of us doing what we liked to do best when the day was done. Mother at one end with her diaries and scrap books spread out before her, and the rest of us amusing ourselves in any way we wished. That night I sat on the bench under the window that looked out onto the grape arbour. I could feel a draft, and so I had taken a blanket that was always folded at the end of the creton couch and wrapped it around my shoulders. Like everyone else, my feet were tucked into handmade felt slippers. And I could feel the most delicious warmth and contentment as I looked around that old kitchen... everything so familiar and so much a part of our everyday lives. Father had moved to the rocking chair in front of the Findlay Oval, and his feet were up on the cushion on the opened oven door. His papers were around him, and his pipe hung loosely in his mouth. That night I was contented just to sit. The colouring picture from the

make backyards more appealing. The scope of your investment will depend on the size of the deck and design. Doing the work yourself can cut the cost of decks in half, but only if you have the specific tools or experience to tackle such a project. • Improve curb appeal. Adding attractive landscaping and freshening up the entryway to a home can add considerable value to your home, as buyers judge homes by their exteriors. Completely renovated interiors may never be seen if buyers pass up your home because of a less attractive exterior. Classy, subtle changes, like well-placed shrubbery and a green lawn, can work wonders. An inviting front door and well-lit entryway also add curb appeal to a home. Before making improvements, homeowners should determine if a given project will provide a solid return on their investment.
R001R0013180425
• Put in another bathroom. Multiple bathrooms are an attractive selling point, particularly in older homes that may not have been equipped with more than one bathroom. Finding extra space for a bathroom can be tricky, but consider closets, areas under stairs or even taking some space away from another room. Popular home-improvement television channel HGTV advises that half-bathrooms require at least 18 square feet of space, while full baths need 30 to 35 square feet for a stand-up shower or bathtub. • Renovate the HVAC system. Aesthetic improvements aren’t the only ones that add value to a home. Many home buyers are eager to purchase a home that has a new heating and cooling system, as buyers understand that furnaces and air conditioning units are substantial investments that can last for years. Other improvements, such as adding attic insulation or replacing older windows and doors with more energy efficient options, also are smart bets. • Add illumination to rooms. A dark home is a dreary home. Adding light can mean including more overhead and accent lighting. Under-cabinet task lighting is a nice touch. Inclusion of skylights and sun tubes can bring natural light into rooms that may not have south- or west-facing windows. • Put a deck addition outdoors. Outdoor living spaces have become more desireable, especially as the “staycation” has grown in popularity. Decks and patios can

Homeowners choose renovation projects for a variety of reasons. Although many improvements are made to increase functionality and comfort of a home, several others are seen as worthwhile investments. These investments can add up to a higher resale value when the time comes to sell a home. Certain projects have a history of providing a greater return on homeowners’ investments than others. The following renovation tips can add beauty to your home and generate great returns when you put the home up for sale. • Invest in your kitchen. Kitchen remodels are a safe bet when it comes to putting money into improving a home. Residents tend to spend a great deal of time in the kitchen, but a dated, poorly functioning kitchen can detract from the value of a home, even if the rest of the home is in good shape. It’s possible to recoup between 60 and 120 percent of your kitchen remodel investment, especially if the kitchen matches up well with the rest of your home. Homeowners should know that a deluxe renovation may not be necessary, as relatively moderate improvements can create a whole new look for a kitchen. • Look to paint. One of the least expensive improvement materials, but one that has a significant impact, is paint. Neutral, modern colors can easily liven up any space. If you paint with low-VOC paint, you also can advertise an eco-friendly home, which is very desireable these days.

Living in an historic home can be a labor of love. The history and the distinct architecture of historic homes draw buyers to such properties, but what historic homes have in regard to history they often lack in the conveniences of modern life, forcing many historic-home owners to make renovations to bring their homes into the 21st century. Historic-home renovations differ from other types of modifications. According to the Victorian Preservation Association, renovation is getting a home back to where it may have been when originally built, but making concessions for today’s lifestyle. Preservation is the act of maintaining a structure in its current historic state, and restoration is returning a home to its original state. Unless a homeowner plans to use an outhouse or live without electricity, the majority of work done on historic properties is likely to fall into the category of a renovation. Renovating an aging structure can be fulfilling and help to make a home more functional. But make no mistake, such a renovation is a major undertaking. Before beginning, it pays to hire a professional consultant with expertise in renovating historic properties. He or she can inspect the property to determine which areas of the home are safe and which will need to be upgraded. A professional inspection also can determine if any deficiencies lie hidden in the structure. Potential concerns can be toxic paints and other substances, building code issues, rotting, and structural settling. Professionals will know what to look for and guide homeowners accordingly. Homeowners also may want to consult with a preservation association, community restoration group or general owner-builder group. These people can refer homeowners to the craftspeople and materials that will be needed for a job. Homeowners can request to

see other historic properties in the area and learn what those owners did to maintain the integrity of a home when using newer materials. Before any work is started, homeowners should find out if their home is listed with the National Register of Historic Places. According to the United States National Parks Service, property owners can do whatever they want with their property so long as there are no federal monies attached to the property. However, the property owner should also contact his or her state’s historic preservation office, or SHPO. The SHPO is the state agency that oversees historic preservation efforts in each state, and there may be state or local preservation laws that the owner should be aware of before renovating a historic property. Craftspeople should have experience with historic homes and a sensitivity and appreciation of renovating older properties. Homeowners always should see examples of a craftsperson’s work and verify references from each contractor before hiring anyone to work on the property. Homeowners who want to include traditional hardware and other period details in their homes may be able to find quality replicas of historic milling materials, while others may want to scour antique shops or salvage yards for era-appropriate materials. Historic renovations can be costly and have a tendency to go over budget because of unforseen damage and hazards that have to be repaired so the building is up to code. Going into the project with this in mind can help soften the blow of extra costs down the road. Historic homes can be beautiful and appeal to buyers who appreciate the one-of-a-kind nature of older properties. Renovating historic homes may take time and money, but the results may be well worth the effort.
