Coach for the Champion

esides professional skills, being loving, patient and careful are things to be a qualified gymnastic coach.

2. In order to ensure the safety of intensive training, Qin requires students to do 30 minutes warm-up exercise before stunts training. After 30 minutes, five children’ clothes are soaked with sweats.

1. Children who prepared for professional competition are accommodating in the base. Other children who learn gymnastics as a way to keep fit usually come at 16:30 after school to receive a 2 hours training.

“I hope they can do better, not only for champion. Gold medals should not be their whole pursuit.� Qin thinks that athletes need to overcome obstacles and undertake more difficult challenges with strong determination. This experience can be of great service to children in their future life.

3. Qin started to learn gymnastic coaching at relatively late age. However, researching and following the guidelines from old coaches, he can provide his students clear and precise instruction to finish stunts.

4. Even though the training is tough, most children stick to it and finally fall in love with this sport. Qin always plays games with his children during the break time and gives them a very enjoyable experience.


The training base of Zhuhai teenager gymnastics is home to 13 young athletes who won 2 gold and 5 silver medals in the Guangdong Teenager Gymnastic Championships at the end of August 2014. They all started to received professional training at the age around 4, which is regarded as the best age to start preparing for this athletic career. Besides the training for gymnastic competition, there are 150 teenagers practice gymnastics as a hobby in this base. Wei Chunyu, aged 8, was the winner of Guangdong Gymnatics Junior Championships. He is the student of Qin Haopeng, the 26 year-old coach at Zhuhai Lining Gymnastics School. Now they are preparing for the coming competitions. The career as a gymnastic coach for Qin was more like an accidental choice rather than a goal he pursued for long. He was matriculated by Xi’an Institute of Physical Education, and he chose gymnastics as his major without any specific thoughts. He wanted to be a PE teacher after graduation, but it turned out that he got the job as a gymnastic coach. It is usually around 7 at dawn that the last kid is picked up by parents and 9 is the time for ultimate release in dorm after dinner with other five coaches. The dream of Qin is to cultivate a world champion. And more importantly is to make kids feel the process of competition, which is the source of his happiness.

Children are usually aged from 5 to 8, some of them are naughty at the beginning. Disobeying rules may bring dangers at the gym, so Qin sometimes let those naughty boys stand in the corner as a “punishment” and meanwhile prevent them from dangerous.

While other kids are enjoying their pleasant school life, these kids in the gymnastic school have taken sweat and toil for their dreams. The callus in their hands are the proof of their persistent hard-working since they came to the school at age of 4.

Ten-year Practice for One Day

Children are less stronger than adults, they may be lazy and easy to give up. Qin always encourage them rather than criticize. “They actually want to complete each action, but sometimes can not overcome their inertia. After all, they are still kids.”Qin says.
