ALUMNI LEADERSHIP DAY

17th Annual
October 12, 2022

The Kinkaid School’s 17th Annual Alumni Leadership Day

Dear Class of 2023,

This year we have a very impressive group of over 50 alumni returning to campus to visit with the Class of 2023 about their respective careers and the decisions and paths that defined their choices.

We want to thank our alumni for participating in this special event. Each of them has generously made time for Kinkaid and is willing and eager to share their insights so that you will be better equipped for the opportunities, challenges, and decisions that lie ahead.

The alumni panelists have shared a brief summary of what a “day in the life” of their career entails, along with their contact info and educational and work history. We hope that this information can be used to provide you with a realistic view of the demands and expectations of these various jobs.

Our goal is that you will begin to better formulate questions about your next steps in college and beyond. We encourage you to ask questions during the panel sessions and follow up with the panelists after the program. Making connections within the vast network of Kinkaid alumni is extremely valuable, and we hope that the Class of 2023 will take advantage of this unique opportunity.

Sincerely,

Kenner Smith Francis ’10

Prior Employer: Sesame Workshop

I write for the Blue’s Clues reboot, Blue’s Clues and You. I usually spend a couple hours a day in writing meetings, research debriefs, and episode walk throughs where we check in with the different parties who have a say in the episodes we are writing (the production team, network executives, show creators, and the research team - they test every episode as a storybook with a group of kids!). The rest of the day is spent hitting writing deadlines or brainstorming future episodes/trouble shooting problems that came up in the earlier meetings with the writing team. We try to leave a couple days of the week free of meetings to focus on writing episodes. When writing, it’s usually just me, Final Draft or Word, and a document or two of notes to address.

As a strategy consultant in our sports practice, I execute high-priority projects for sports teams, leagues, associations, and governing bodies that help executives consider how they might advance their business. A few questions we might answer: “How should the NBA structure and leverage their fan data to make more money?” or “How could the Texans improve the digital experience within their stadium?” or “How can the United States Golf Association reach certain audiences and advance their brand in the digital age?” My day-to-day activities include hosting client meetings to discuss progress and ask questions, building business cases to inform decision-making, and crafting data-based stories to communicate our ideas to clients.

B.S.; M.S. Management Science & Engineering, Stanford University

Prior Employer: Morgan Stanley

I spend most of my day using Excel and other software tools to analyze and draw conclusions from financial data. These analyses are used to drive decisions across the business, most notably how we allocate our financial resources (how many people we hire, which products we cut / which products we continue to develop, how to improve our cost structure). Additionally, I help department heads (HR, Legal / Compliance, IT, Product / Engineering, Sales / Marketing) think through their future resource allocation. I work with leadership to determine what the key performance metrics are and set goals for the coming year. We create a budget, forecast where we expect to be, develop an automated system to monitor these metrics, and meet frequently to make adjustments.
