Who We Are The Kinkaid School is a non-sectarian college preparatory day school enrolling a total of 1,380 boys and girls in grades prekindergarten through twelve. The school has three divisions: Lower School (Prekindergarten, Kindergarten, and grades 1-4); Middle School (grades 5-8); and Upper School (grades 9-12). Each division has its own faculty, classrooms, identity and a specific educational plan for nurturing its students. The divisions are unified through educational ideals that characterize Kinkaid and determine its policies. All lower and middle school students wear uniforms, and upper school students do not. Kinkaid is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest. Kinkaid is a private, non-profit and tax exempt corporation. It is governed by a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees, which draws its members from Kinkaid’s graduates and parents and other members of the Houston community.

Kinkaid’s History and Philosophy The oldest independent coeducational school in Houston, Kinkaid was founded in 1906 by Margaret Hunter Kinkaid. The School has had three locations - the first of which was Mrs. Kinkaid’s own home, where classes were conducted in the dining room. From its earliest days Kinkaid has emphasized both academic attainment and character development. Margaret Kinkaid encouraged her students to seek honor as well as achievement, and she described her ideal student as “the intellectually capable boy or girl of sound character whose talents, interests, and uniqueness are educational assets for other Kinkaid children.” Today’s Kinkaid remains faithful to its founder’s calling, valuing its students for their potential as well as their achievement and striving always for their balanced growth - intellectual, physical, social and ethical.

Character Education Although Kinkaid’s primary goals are intellectual endeavor and achievement, true to Margaret Kinkaid’s vision, the School continues to believe strongly in the sound development of a student’s character. To that end, Kinkaid actively promotes its four core values – honesty, respect, responsibility and kindness – by encouraging lower school students and requiring middle school and upper school students to participate in community service projects. In addition, middle school and upper school students have the opportunity to participate in programs such as The Anti-Defamation League’s No Place for Hate, Peer Mentors, the middle school’s leadership curriculum, Governing Council and Admission Ambassadors, to name a few.

LOWER SCHOOL
Grades PreK-4 Quick Facts

The units of study are multi-disciplinary in grades PreK through four.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Grades 5-8 Quick Facts

The Kinkaid Middle School emphasizes the acquisition of study skills within its curriculum, especially in the fifth and sixth grades, to help students make the transition from selfcontained lower school classes to Middle School. The StudentTeacher Ratio is 14:1.

Students in grades seven and eight are ready for an accelerated curriculum which provides the critical bridge to Upper School with traditional course offerings, as well as arts and athletics.

Highlights of every grade in Middle School include various field trips and overnight trips that focus on teamwork and cooperation.

The Middle School meets students at their stage of development and is committed to ensuring their physical, emotional and intellectual growth. It strives to engage students in the learning process and encourages them to become independent thinkers.

Trip Programs The annual class trip is an exciting and important part of the Kinkaid Middle School. • The sixth grade visits Mo Ranch to focus on class unity activities and specific environmental concerns. • The seventh grade travels the Texas highways to learn about our state’s history, government, culture, geography and ecology. • The eighth grade spends four days touring the Washington, DC area, focusing on the history and government of the United States.
Peer Mentoring Program Eighth grade students meet weekly for leadership training and mentor preparation. They serve as ambassadors for the Middle School, coordinating and facilitating interactive lessons with fifth and sixth grade advisories.

Athletics The athletic department strives to provide each student with a quality experience in athletics, physical education and wellness. The goal of the athletic program is to ensure that every student athlete will be afforded the opportunity to learn life-long skills that are rooted in individual accountability and humility while maximizing their individual potential and contributing positively to their teams. Through the years, competitive athletics has provided thousands of students valuable opportunities to work, grow, learn and have fun.

Our teams have won numerous conference championships, and our athletes have earned distinction for themselves and for the School through their achievements at Kinkaid and, in many cases, in their college athletic careers.

Interscholastic athletics are voluntary at Kinkaid, and we are proud that each year over three-fourths of our students choose to participate in at least one of our more than 90 teams.
