PALMYRAH COLLECTION

PALMYRAH COLLECTION  Palmyrah trees grow wild in the northern part of Sri Lanka. The long leafs of this graceful palms are used by the local women to weave products of many kinds. We truly found inspiration in the beauty of the Palmyrah scenery of the Jaffna landscape and its ancient handicraft.

The ancient trade is taking shape under the palmyrah palm shades.

JEWELLERY 窶右ach piece of jewelry is handcrafted with the utmost attention to detail throughout the manufacturing process in Sri Lanka. All pieces consist of precious metals and gemstones, and are meticulously assembled by hand.

BATIK SCARVES  All the artwork is drawn with hot wax on pure, untreated silk. The applied wax resists dyes and therefore allows the artisan to colour selectively by soaking the silk in one colour, removing the wax with boiling water, and repeating if multiple colours are used. Much love, care and time has been given into every single scarf.

PASHMINA SCARVES  The hand-woven pashmina scarves are created in a cottage industry in Rajasthan, the north of India. The very fine, flossy pashmina fibres are blended with 20% silk to give an exceptional softness and durability. After the yarn is hand dyed with beautiful shades to reflect colour and textural stories it takes around two weeks for the artisan to weave just one scarf. The beauty of these scarves lies in the gorgeous handcrafted materials and in the fact that they support a fading industry.

Caught in-between homesickness and a longing for distant shores, Josie and Jessica Fernando founded KINSFOLK to unite their homelands of Switzerland and Sri Lanka. With strong bonds to both cultures, the sisters express them in evergrowing collections of jewelry and scarves. These are created in partnership with craftsmen from small manufacturers and cottage industries in Sri Lanka and other parts of the Indian subcontinent. They compliment the sister's designs with traditional techniques and materials of the highest quality. Each piece of the KINSFOLK collection is handmade. For both jewelry and scarves the materials are carefully selected, rather for their natural and individual beauty than for clarity or perceived value. The goal is to celebrate enduring design that inspires for a lifetime. KINSFOLK principles are to manufacture ethically, and ensure that artisans earn a sustainable living while preserving the skilled crafts and trades.
