1 Academy of Applied Permaculture The Three Ethics of Permaculture

The only ethical decision is to take responsibility for our own existence and that of our children. Cooperation, not competition, is the very basis of future survival and of existing life systems. Permaculture is guided by the following three overarching ethics:

Care of the Earth: includes the care of all living and non-living things, plants, animals, land, water, air

Care of People: promotes self-reliance and community responsibility and access to resources necessary for existence

Benevolent Distribution of Goods and Resources: setting limits to population and consumption; sharing and distributing any surplus yield

Generally, any actions that demonstrate the Three Ethics can be considered Permaculture in practice. Come and learn how you can put Permaculture into practice in your life.

WEEKEND/EVENING WORKSHOPS (cont.) 19 CLAY, SUN AND WATER Water Collection/ Rainwater Harvesting

Build a Rocket Mass Heater Workshop (3 days)

Jarad Barkeim

Wayne Weiseman & C. Milton Dixon

Water is a precious resource that we all too often take for granted. This is a primer course on rainwater collection techniques, the creation of simple rainwater collection systems and creating a basic water plan for your home. We will cover a brief history of rainwater collection and the multiple uses of captured rainwater as well as general information about household gray and black water. Additionally, you will learn about safe water storage principles, calculating rain volume yields from roofs and other impermeable hard surfaces, using gravity fed water transfer systems (gutters, pipes, hoses), cistern and water tank basics, and more. Children ages 13-17 may register with a registered adult. Date: Sunday, July 13 Time: 9:00am-1:00pm Course Fee: $60

This workshop will focus on building a cob style rocket mass heater. It will be constructed inside the straw-clay cabin at Kinstone and will include a bench. This beautiful heater will be used to keep this cabin warm on chilly Wisconsin evenings. A rocket mass heater can heat a living space with a fraction of the firewood that would be used in a more traditional wood stove.
Wood burns so efficiently in this style of heater that there is virtually no smoke, simply steam and carbon dioxide.
The stove’s thermal mass stores and may radiate heat for days after a single firing.
Over the course of this weekend workshop you will build a rocket mass heater and by doing so, learn how to: mix and apply cob and earthen mortars from sand, clay and water; lay bricks for the combustion chamber and manifold, use clay slip and perlite to insulate around the combustion chamber and heat riser, safely install and connect stove pipe for the exhaust/chimney, and more. Daily free breakfast, lunch and dinner available for registered students. Children ages 13-17 may register with a registered adult. Dates: September 12-14 (Friday-Sunday) Course Length: 3 days Daily Schedule: 9:00am-5:00pm Course Fee: Early bird: $400 After August 12: $445

Cob Oven Workshop (2 days)

Aquaponics Workshop

Jarad Barkeim

Wayne Weiseman & Jarad Barkeim

We will also cover topics such as soil analysis for sand and clay content, variations on the oven design, how to care for and maintain the oven, as well as how to fire it up and cook in it. The use of the cob oven encourages a new way of relating to our food and the processes we use to cook and create it. Within two weeks we will send you a confirmation email including a confirmation letter, a materials list, other course specific information that may be applicable, a list of local accommodation options and a liability release form that must be signed prior to the start of class. The Registration Form can be found at the back of the Course Catalog or it can be downloaded as a PDF from our website; find the link to the form on the “How Do I Register?” page at www.kinstonecircle.com/registration/. 1. By Mail Complete the Registration Form and send it to our mailing address. 2. Payment and Deposit Information For courses with a published course fee under $150, full payment for the course fee and the materials fee (if any) is required at the time of registration. For courses with a published course fee of $150 or more, a deposit equal to at least 33% of the course tuition is due upon registration. Any remaining amount is due two weeks before the start of the class. Special payment arrangements may be possible; contact the Kinstone Academy office to discuss. Payment must be in US funds only and may be made by cash (in person), check, money order, or credit card via Paypal. Do not send cash through the mail. Please make checks and money orders payable to Kinstone. You will find a link on our website to pay for each course using PayPal or using a credit card via PayPal. You can also call us for specific PayPal instructions if you prefer. Please contact us directly if you have any questions regarding these payment options.

Tuition Discounts Kinstone Academy of Applied Permaculture offers many courses at two different rates: a less-expensive “early-bird” rate available to those who sign up for a course more than four weeks before it begins and a “regular” rate for those signing up within 4 weeks of a course’s start date. See the individual course descriptions for specific rates. We offer an additional 10% discount for certain courses that have a multiple-course discount associated with them, for military personnel and for couples who register for a course together; however only one of these discounts may be applied per person per course. These discounts apply to tuition only, not materials or supply fees.

Course Sizes and Registration Deadline Classes at Kinstone Academy of Applied Permaculture are intentionally kept small and may fill quickly. We recommend that you register early to ensure your participation. The registration deadline for any course is two weeks before the start of the course unless otherwise specified in the Course Description. We reserve the right to cancel courses if there is insufficient enrollment by the registration deadline. Cancellations will be posted on our website and registered participants will be notified via email or phone. Late registration may be possible due to student cancellations; please call the office regarding last minute openings.

Cancellations/Refunds If you cancel fourteen (14) or fewer days in advance of the course start date, you will receive no refund. If you cancel more than 14 days prior to the start date of a course, you will receive a refund of 50% of the total course fee paid minus the 33% deposit which is non-refundable. Any refunds due will be paid by check within two weeks after receiving a written cancellation notice from you.

Waiting List Kinstone Academy of Applied Permaculture will maintain a waiting list for those wishing to sign up for classes that are already full. We will contact the persons on the waiting list only if space becomes available. Further, we will use these lists to determine if and when to offer another course on a given topic. Persons on the waiting list are given first priority should we decide to run an extra session of a given course.
