Cap tain Madok and driver Putu Satriawan had reportedly tried to camouflage their illicit trade in protected turtles by hiding the their contraband under layers of dead fish. Press reports say the two men confessed to
smuggling the turtles from Speken on the island of Madura and bringing them by local boat to the port of Kampung Baru in Buleleng, North Bali. The meat had been reportedly ordered by a number of restaurants in Denpasar. The increasingly rare sea turtles can fetch as much as Rp. 4 million (US$400) each for even one small specimen. The Captain and the driver now face prosecution under a 1990 law that provides for a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison and fines of Rp. 100 million (US$10,000). Www.balidiscovery.com

Ninety Paragliders Over Bali on September 9, 2009 Southern Skies Fill with Human Kites as 99 Paragliders Hover Over Bali's Ungasan Southern Peninsula. In a successful effort to set a new "official" Indonesian record of 99 paragliders aloft at one time, pilots began leaping off the cliffs of Bali's southernmost Ungasan peninsula at 9:00 a.m. on September 9, 2009. Drawing participation from paragliders both from Indonesia and abroad, the goal was to have 99 paraglider airborne at once, a feat that the judges determined was achieve at 12:05 p.m., some three hours after the first athlete became airborne. The festivities surrounding the record breaking flight were conducted on a slightly somber note following the death of a 60year old American, Ray Benson, who perished while paragliding on
the peninsula one day before the mass flight. It is unclear if Benson was to be part of the group of international paragliders cooperating to set a new record. Beritabali.com quoted the Manager of the Indonesian Record Museum (MURI), Paulus Pangka, who certified the that 99 paragliders had managed to be simultaneously aloft, saying, "the record for joint flight is hereby recorded in the Museum of Indonesian Records as record number 3907." Not satisfied with breaking only one record in a day, an Indonesian
athlete, Dedi Arifianto, set a longest flight record of 9 hours and 9 minutes, surpassing his record flight set on August 8, 2008 of 8 hours and 8 minutes. Dare we ask, how does an hang-glider on an extended flight arrange a rest stop? Www.balidiscovery.com

Woman theatened and tortured by ex, court hears A WOMAN allegedly held captive by her former boyfriend and subjected to five days of torture and threats of death managed to escape when he went to report to police as part of his bail conditions. Grant Mills of Wilberforce faced court yesterday charged with abducting his former girlfriend Peita Hassett as she walked along a street in Windsor in Sydney's outerwest. Penrith Local Court heard yesterday that Ms Hassett was walking along busy George St, Windsor, when Mr Mills allegedly jumped out of a small car, grabbed her and forced her into the back seat as another man drove. Mr Mills allegedly told Ms Hassett, who had been in an "on and off again relationship" with him in 2008, he would hold her hostage then kill her. Ms Hassett was allegedly taken to Mr Mill's caravan at Riverside Van Park at nearby Wilberforce, where he told her he would chase after her and kill her if she attempted to flee. The court heard she told police officers her alleged ordeal worsened on Sunday, with Mr Mills waking her at
4am (AEST), screaming at her and saying: "God has told me to kill you. I'm not going to kill you yet, I'm going to wait until 5pm this afternoon. I'm going to kill you slowly." The court heard the abuse allegedly continued for almost five hours, with Mr Mills repeatedly punching Ms Hassett to the head and face, choking her, and stabbing her leg with a large stainless steel kitchen knife. At about 9am on Sunday, Mr Mills was driven to Windsor Police Station by his father to report on bail, taking Ms Hassett along. Once he was inside, she ran from the car, allegedly hiding among police vehicles at the back of the station until he left, then reported her ordeal. The court heard shocked officers described her injuries as "severe" and said they included a badly bruised and swollen right eye, cuts to her left leg and forehead and bruising to other parts of her body. Forensic officers searched the caravan park on Sunday night, arresting Mr Mills and locating a knife and items of bedding with blood on them. Police yesterday opposed bail, with Prosecutor Sergeant Daniel Winter arguing Mills was already on bail at the
time of the attack after being charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm less than three weeks ago. Magistrate George Zdenkowski refused bail, noting Mills "long history of criminal offences including substantial periods in custody including for offences of violence". Mills will face Penrith Local Court again on Friday, September 18 on charges including detaining a person for advantage causing actual bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Mills' Legal Aid solicitor said her client would be defending the allegations and denied the blood found in his caravan was from the victim. Detectives yesterday appealed for witnesses who saw Mr Mills allegedly snatch Ms Hassett near the corner of George St and Hawkesbury Valley Way on Tuesday or who can help identify the small red car involved and its driver to contact them on Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
Giant, man-killing eagle legend confirmed
IT might not have killer crocs but New Zealand was once home to an even more fearsome creature that could rip apart humans with its claws. New research has confirmed that a giant man-eating bird long spoken of in legends actually existed. And the Haast eagle was even bigger and more deadly than first thought, fulfilling the same role as the killer lions of Africa.
38
Each creature had a wingspan of three metres and weighed almost 20kg, making more than twice the size of the largest eagle that survives today. "It was certainly capable of swooping down and taking a child," Paul Scofield, of Canterbury University in New Zealand, said. Its talons were as big as a tiger's claws, making it the ultimate "killing machine", he said. "They had the ability to not only strike with their talons but to close the talons and put them through quite solid objects such as a pelvis." Until now, the eagle has been nothing more than a legendary bird called a Te Hokioi by Maori. The first known account of this mystical bird was given to 19th Century New Zealand governor Sir George Grey, who described it as a huge blackand-white predator with a red crest and yellow-green tinged wingtips.Pictures of
the giant creature could be found all through early Maori rock drawings but they were presumed imaginary. Remains of the Haast eagle had been collected in the 1870s but early examinations found it was a scavenger like a vulture. However, new tests of the skeletons using modern technology, including CAT scans, have revealed the eagle and legendary Te Hokioi are one and the same. The research, published in The Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, concluded the bird is the Kiwi equivalent of the great African lion. It survived on a diet of moa, another giant but flightless bird and became extinct just 500 years ago, after humans killed off its food source.

Malaysia Air Traffic Rights Expansion Put on Hold
'Technical Reasons' Blamed for Delay of Expanded Fifth Freedom Rights Between Indonesia & Malaysia. Is this the Latest Salvo in 'Tit for Tat' Between Malaysia and Indonesia? Citing its current inability to fully utilize negotiated fifth freedom traffic rights with Malaysia, Indonesia is temporarily delaying a bi-lateral agreement with Malaysia that would have allowed both countries the reciprocal right to carry revenue traffic (cargo and passengers) to onward destinations as part of services connecting the airline's own country. Fifth freedoms provide participating countries the right to carry passengers between their respective countries and on to a third country. It remains unclear if the sudden decision to delay the formal signing of the fifth freedom agreement is somehow connected to the worsening diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Indonesia over the perceived arrogation of Indonesian cultural icons by Malaysia. Quoted by Bisnis Indonesia, the Director General of
Civil Aviation, Herry S.Bakti S. Gumay said the postponement of the memorandum scheduled for August 2009 was due to "technical reasons" and was awaiting final approval from the Minister of Transportation. Saying the decision to go ahead with the planned agreement is outside his authority and rests entirely with the Minister, Herry was not prepared to commit that the planned agreement would be completed in 2009. Bilateral talks between Indonesia and Malaysia held in Malaysia June 9-10, 2009, worked out the details of a fifth freedom agreement between the two countries that were scheduled to be formalized in Jakarta in August 2009. Malaysian Fifth Freedom Rights The delayed agreement granted Malaysia: Fifth freedom right for Malaysian aircraft to fly 7 times each week to Jakarta, Makassar, Balikpapan and Denpasar (Bali) and for 14 Malaysian flights to continue each week to cities in Australia. Indonesian Fifth Freedom Rights The agreement with Malaysia afforded the following flight freedoms to Indonesia: Fifth freedom rights through Kuala Lumpur, Kinabalu and Kuching to carry passengers
beyond those cities to third country destinations in Asia (except Tokyo) to a maximum of 36 flights each week. Fifth freedom rights via Kuala Lumpur, Kinabalu and Kuching to all destinations in Europe 14 times each week. Fifth freedom rights via Kuala Lumpur, Kinabalu and Kuching to all destinations in the Middle East 21 times each week. Fifth freedom rights via Kuala Lumpur, Kinabalu and Kuching to various destinations in the U.S.A. 14 times each week. In addition to the listed fifth freedom flight rights, the delayed agreement also provided for additional seat capacity for Malaysian airlines in their flight services to Jakarta, Surabaya and Denpasar (Bali). Adding another layer on mystery and intrigue to the decision to delay the bi-lateral flight agreement, the Secretary General of the Indonesia National Air Carriers Association (INACA), Tengku Burhanuddin, welcomed the decision to delay the agreement, saying, "the postponement is very wise in the current situation." He also expressed doubts as to whether the proposed agreement would benefit Indonesian carriers given the number of airlines flying from Indonesian to Malaysia. Www.balidiscovery.com

Bali Declared a Rabies Infected Area Confirme d Cases of Rabies Limited to Badung, Denpasar and Tabanan while Other Regions of Bali Deemed Suscepti ble to Rabies Infection. Beritabali.com reports that Bali has been declared as a rabies contaminated region (Daerah Tertular). This declaration follows the growing number of outbreak of the disease in Badung, Denpasar and Tabanan. The remaining 6 regencies of the island have been designated potential areas (Daerah Rawan) for the spread of rabies.
4
The Head of the Livestock Department for Bali, Ida Bagus Alit, told the press of Wednesday, September 9, 2009, that the decision to declare Tabanan as rabies contaminated took place after confirming rabies cases among dogs in that region. Previously confirmed cases of rabies were limited to the Badung regency and the City of Denpasar. In those two regions of the island the government responded with systematic culling of stray dogs and the vaccination of pet populations. Alit told the press: "We have already dropped 5,000 dosages for 5,000 dogs. Using a scale of priorities focusing on contaminated areas first, we can now work on other regions of the island." Alit said he had submitted another request to the Central Government for an additional 400,000 dosages, the number of dogs estimated to populate the entire island.

Government Allocates Money for Rabies Vaccines Meanwhile, the provincial government of Bali has allocated around Rp. 1 billion (US$100,000) to purchases rabies vaccine for the people of Bali who are bitten or scratched by a potentially infected animal. The Head of the Bali Health Service, Dr. Nyoman Sutedja, told Beritabali.com that he hope the Rp. 1 billion remained sufficient to meet the needs of people seeking antirabies treatment. Since the recent outbreak of the disease in Bali there have been 5 deaths confirmed as resulting from rabies and a number of deaths in which laboratory confirmation was not performed, but in which rabies is suspected to have been the cause of death. A POLICE command is in turmoil with female officers claiming widespread sexual harassment and intimidation, including being told their place is in the home. The Daily Telegraph has obtained a female senior constable's 30-page complaint against five policemen at the Goulburn Local Area Command in the southwest of New South Wales. In the complaint, the officer alleged colleagues sent sexually explicit emails at her expense, asked her to join a threesome, sacked her locker and intercepted her mail. Another three officers at the same command's Bowral station have told their local MP they were "demeaned" due to pregnancy or because they were mothers. Burrinjuck MP Katrina Hodgkinson told State Parliament the women "have always been highly respected members of the communities they have protected". The alleged harassment of the senior constable and sergeant
began two years ago. one unsavoury exchange in the police station last year the senior constable said a colleague told her a threesome was "every man's dream" and then suggested she "have a go" with the girlfriend of another officer. A sexually explicit email was then allegedly sent to other officers. When she went looking for support from another female officer, the colleague told her: "If you were female in this LAC and you stood up for yourself and the better you did your job then the more complaints you got." The policewomen have also made serious allegations a local man was assaulted during an arrest in the middle of 2007 and that it was never investigated, despite his family attempting to make a complaint. The senior constable said the arresting officer told her: "That guy's a piece of shit, he was carrying on like a f**wit and
mouthing off, he got what he deserved, we flogged him, he got pile-driven into the ground head first." Two of the male officers accused of much of the alleged abuse were transferred to the senior constable's station last year and the woman complained: "I felt as though they were detaining me in my own police station." A police media spokesman said the women, who were unable to comment because of an ongoing investigation, were the subject of a 181D action and faced a loss of confidence of the Commissioner. "Their reward for a combined 37 years of dedicated front-line service is to be subjected to systematic bullying by male officers because of their gender and because they had the courage to stand up and complain about their treatment," Ms Hodgkinson said. The two women have paid dearly for their service, with the

Schoolkids vote 13-1 to slaughter lamb A GROUP of schoolchildren who reared a lamb from birth and named it Marcus have overridden objections by parents and rights activists and voted to send the animal to slaughter. Marcus the six-month-old lamb has now been culled, the head teacher of the primary school in Kent confirmed yesterday, after the school's council - a 14-member group of children aged six to 11 voted 13-1 to have him killed. The decision has provoked fury among animal-loving celebrities, animal and human rights campaigners and the parents of some of the children, and led to threats against Lydd primary school and its teachers, according to a member of staff. About 250 children at the school take part in a program designed to teach them about rearing and breeding animals. The educational farm was started this year, with Marcus being hand-fed
by the children. The children also look after ducks, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs. The intention had been to buy pigs with the money raised from slaughtering Marcus, but those plans have been put on hold following the furor created by the lamb's culling. The school said the program may now have to be stopped. "It's all up in the air," said a member of staff. "There's been so much pressure on us as a result of all this." Despite that, the school said there had been overwhelming support among the children, the staff and most of the parents to have Marcus - a castrated male who could not have been used for breeding - sent to the slaughterhouse. But opponents branded it heartless and cruel, with animal
rights campaigners asking why Marcus could not have been used to teach the children about wool, and human rights campaigners worried about the emotional impact of Marcus's death on the children. A popular talkshow host offered to buy the lamb and give it sanctuary and Facebook groups sprung up to rally support to keep Marcus alive. But the children had the final say. The school defended the children's decision, calling it educational. "When we started the farm in spring 2009, the aim was to educate the children in all aspects of farming life and everything that implies," the school said. "The children have had a range of opportunities to discuss this issue, both in terms of the food cycle and the ethical aspect.
107-year-old Malaysian woman seeks 23rd hubby KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) A 107year-old Malaysian woman says she is ready to marry for the 23rd time because she fears her current drug addict husband might leave her for a younger woman, a report said Monday. Wook Kundor made headlines four years ago when she married Muhammad Noor Che Musa, a man 70 years her junior in northern Terengganu state, with pictures of the couple's wedding splashed across regional newspapers. But Wook is now looking for new love as she fears that Muhammad, 37, who is undergoing voluntary drug rehabilitation treatment in the capital Kuala Lumpur, will leave
36
her once the programme ends, she told the Star newspaper. "Lately, there is this kind of insecurity in me," the paper quoted her as saying, showing a
photograph of the smiling, wrinkled-faced centenarian wearing a Muslim headscarf. "I realise that I am an aged woman. I don't have the
body nor am I a young woman who can attract anyone." "My intention to remarry is to fill my forlornness and nothing more than that," she said, adding that she felt lonely without her husband by her side to celebrate the coming Muslim festival of Eid alFitr next week. Wook said she planned to visit Muhammad on the second day of Eid if her neighbours were willing to drive her to the capital. Muhammad, who was a lodger in Wook's house, had previously said it was "God's will" that the couple fell in love.

Increasing Indonesia's Tourism Targets Interview with Sapta Nirwandar, Director General of Marketing, Department of Culture and Tourism. The September 10, 2009 edition of the Bali Post interviewed Sapta Nirwandar seeking information on the Indonesian government's intention to increase its target to 7 million foreign visits in 2010. The following is our free translation of that interview. The Interview: Sapta Nirwandar, Director General of Marketing, Department of Culture and Tourism Bali Post: What's the target for 2009? Nirwandar: For this year we have set a goal of 6.4 million foreign tourists, while for next year our plans are to increase this to 7 million. Bali Post: What's the basis for increasing the target? Nirwandar: This is based on the positive development of Indonesia's tourism sector. What's
more, Indonesia appears to be one of the few countries in the Asia Pacific which are developing positively, such as Malaysia and South Korea. These three countries' tourism industries continue to grow while most other countries report declining numbers. Bali Post: What does this look like? Nirwandar: For the first semester of 2009 Malaysia recorded 3.5% growth, while Indonesia achieved 2.5% growth in the same period. These figures prove that factors which have the potential of stunting growth, such a the global financial crisis, bombings and earthquakes - are having insignificant impact on Indonesia's tourism sector. Bali Post: What about this year's tourism target? Nirwandar: For this year's target, I remain confident that we achieve or surpass the 6.5 or 6.6 million mark for foreign visitors.
Bali Post: What steps are being taken to support the achievement of these targets? Nirwandar: Offensively we are undertaking promotion and marketing in a number of key markets recording positive growth in international tourism. We are performing offensive marketing in growing markets such as Australia, China, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, East Europe and the Middle East. Bali Post: What's the adopted theme for tourism? Nirwandar: As regards the theme for tourism, we intend to continue this year's theme of "Marine" and "MICE" (meetings, incentive, conferences and exhibitions), with the additional theme of "culture." After the woman's death blamed on multiple organ failure, hospital authorities assumed responsibilities for the ritual cleansing and wrapping of the victim's remains in order to prevent any possible contamination of family members who would normally undertake these tasks. Family members were cautioned by hospital authorities not to open the funereal shroud and to dispose of the remains as soon as possible. Hailing from Tampak Siring in the Gianyar regency, the eightmonths pregnant woman was admitted to the hospital on August 29, six days before her death. Hospital officials report that the unborn baby died of oxygen
deprivation on the third day of its mother's hospitalization. Meanwhile, Bali health officials are now checking the health of fowl and human populations in areas surrounding the dead woman's residence. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently abandoned efforts to count the number of H1N1 contamination, blaming hundreds of deaths in over 160 countries worldwide. As recently as late August 2009, Indonesian authorities confirmed over 1,000 H1N1 cases nationwide. Www.balidiscovery.com

Police Chief: Recheck Identity of All Airport Staff Bali Police Chief: Use of 'Insiders' by Terrorist Cells Necessitates a New 'Inside-Out' Approach to Airport and Hotel Security. Bali's Chief of Police, General Sutisna, has instructed Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport to re-survey and review their staff as a preventative step against terrorism. As reported in BisnisBali, when General Sutisna recently toured the airport as part of precautions for the expected crush of travelers over the Idul Fitri 1430 H period he took the opportunity to underline the importance of checking the veracity of all personal and biographical for everyone working at the airport. Insisting such a data review must be done without exception and include all those working at the facility, General Sutisna said: "Beginning from gardeners, cleaning service staff up to and including 'bosses' everyone must
be re-checked and their personal data verified. This is important in order to anticipate and prevent an 'insider' from playing a role in potential terrorist acts." Sutisna also told the airport to not only review the identity of all those working at the airport but to also pay attention to the manner in which they perform their duties. He went on to add: "The management (of the airport) must work to create a compact team, avoiding situations where a supervisor doesn't know the name or face of one of his workers." The Bali police chief's warnings come in the aftermath of two bombings at Jakarta Hotels on July 17th in which one hotel worker was determined to have taken a role and the recent discovery of a former Garuda maintenance worker's membership in a terrorism cell. Because of this, Sutisna hopes that all the security staff working at the airport, both from the
private sector and form the police, will remain eternally vigilant against criminal and terrorist acts. In order to keep Indonesia's airways safe Sutisna reminded, "officers must not become slack, but remain vigilant in increasing security measures already in place and coordinating their activities with other departments." Indonesian adulterers to face stoning MUSLIMS who commit adultery can be stoned to death under a new sharia law approved today by lawmakers in Indonesia's staunchly Islamic province of Aceh. The law - which also allows punishments of up to 100 lashes for offences including rape, the consumption of alcohol, homosexuality and gambling - was passed unanimously in the province on the northern tip of Sumatra island. "All parties agreed unanimously to pass the Bill into a law, including the article stipulating the punishment of death by stoning,'' parliamentary special hearing chairman Bachron M Rasyid said. "This law will be effective in 30 days with or without the approval of Aceh's governor,'' he said. The law replaces elements of the civil code with sharia or Islamic law. It stipulates punishments of up to 100 lashes of the cane

for an unmarried person who commits adultery and death by stoning for a married person. "This law is a preventive measure for Acehnese people so that they will avoid moral degradation,'' said Moharriyadia, a spokesman for the Islamicbased Prosperous Justice Party The administration of Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf, a former rebel fighter of the separatist Free Aceh Movement, is opposed to the strict sharia law. It had urged a delay in the Bill's deliberation. "Indonesia is created from a plurality of cultures and local wisdom. If Aceh applies sharia law as criminal law, it's dangerous for us, for Indonesia,'' liberal Muslim intellectual Mohamad Guntur Romli said. "Shariah law in Aceh is part of them not splitting off from Indonesia and it is the people there that are suffering from this,'' Romli said. Aceh had previously adopted sharia law only partially,
enforcing modest Muslim dress codes, mandatory prayers five times a day, fasting and the giving of alms to the poor. The Islamic code was introduced under a broad autonomy package granted by Indonesia's central Government in 2001 to pacify the hardline Muslim region's demand for independence. Separatists in Aceh had been fighting the Indonesian Government since 1976 until a peace deal in 2005. Nearly 90 per cent of Indonesia's 234 million people are Muslim. Most practise a moderate form of the religion.

Horoscopes: Predictions for Sept. 14-20 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) -- It might not be wise to pursue goals involving others, unless you can stop impulsively rejecting new ideas. Either open your mind or wait until next week, when this "ornery" mood passes.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) -- A recent act of kindness on your part could take on special meaning this week. Also, look for signs of upcoming changes in both your personal and professional relationships.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) -- It's a good time for the Bovine to be creative and practical for yourself and your surroundings. Shop wisely, not impulsively, and keep your Bull's eye focused on quality, not quantity.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) -Many of the tougher communication barriers between you and others in the workplace or at home could begin breaking down this week. Expect some surprises to emerge.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) -- You should feel more confident about moving ahead with plans that had to be delayed by an unexpected turn of events. Also, family matters might need more time than first anticipated. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) -- Be considerate of others as you move into a new area in your professional life. Take time to meet people and discuss mutual goals. The more you get to know each other, the better. LEO (July 23 to August 22) -- Creating a fuss could get your ideas noticed quickly. But it would be best to present your case, and then wait for a reaction to follow in due course, rather than try to force it to happen. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) -- Unkept promises might cause plans to go awry this week. You can either grumble about people "letting you down" or find a way to make the best of it and move on. The choice is yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) -- Putting off making a commitment early in the week could be a good move. Best to act when you know you're making an informed decision. Expect more facts to emerge by the week's end.
32
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) -- Your "tough love" attitude toward someone you care for could be misunderstood. Try to be less judgmental and show more consideration in the way you relate to that person. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) -- An unexpected workplace challenge could be daunting. But take what you know (and you know more than you realize) - and apply it to the problem, and you should see positive results. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) -- Recent relationship changes for both single and paired Pisces continue to influence much of your week. Keep your focus on developing the positive aspects as you move along.
IF YOU WERE BORN THIS WEEK: You set your goals with assurance and influence others to follow suit. You would be an excellent philosopher and teacher.

Bali to allocate Rp 250b for truly `free' education Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika says the province will need Rp 250 billion to provide a truly free education for the island's children by 2010. "That amount will ensure the public real free-of-charge education, instead of the fake one," he said recently. He was referring to several so-called free education programs that allegedly still burden students and their parents with various fees and compulsory "donations". Mangku said the provincial administration had allocated Rp 125 billion from its annual budget to make the free education program a reality by 2010.
He urged all regency administrations across the province to come up with another Rp 125 billion. There are nine regencies and one municipality in the island. The availability of that fund, Pastika said, would enable the province to provide free education for students from elementary school to junior high, senior high and senior vocational school. "Naturally, this free education will be offered to students who attend state-run schools," Pastika said. "To make the 12-year compulsory education program a reality, starting from this year the
provincial administration has provided a financial aid package for every student at state-run senior high schools and senior vocational schools across the island," the governor said. Under the scheme, each student will receive financial aid of Rp 500,000, which they can use to pay non-tuition fees required by schools. Badung Regent A.A. Gde Agung welcomed Pastika's request to regional administrations to cough up an extra Rp 125 billion.
Australia's `Balibo' film may not reach RI viewers The Indonesian government may prohibit the Balibo movie being screened here as it may be deemed "offensive". Indonesia's Foreign Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said Friday that neither he nor any other government officials had seen the film but, based on media reports about the controversial film, it was likely to offend the public. "I don't think the censorship agency will allow such an offensive film to be shown in this country as it will open up old wounds," he said at a press briefing. "We have to ensure that the interests of the larger community are being served." Balibo depicts the brutal killing of five foreign journalists by Indonesian soldiers during the invasion of the then East Timor in 1975. Directed by Australian Robert Conolly, the movie was released two months before the Australian Federal Police (AFP) announced it had reopened the investigation into the deaths of the five journalists, known as the Balibo Five. The Indonesian and Australian governments had concluded that the journalists, two of them Australian, were accidentally killed in the crossfire and considered the case closed.
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, however, promised the families of the slain journalists, during his 2007 federal election campaign, that he would resolve the case. Balibo is based on a book written by Jill Jolliffe, who witnessed the first incursions of the military into the Balibo territory and reported the death of her five colleagues. She moved to Portugal in 1978, but continued to follow the story of the Balibo Five for more than 30 years. Historian Clinton Fernandes from the University of New South Wales' School of Humanities and Social Sciences, who acted as a consulting historian for the film, said Connolly was committed to historical accuracy. "*The five journalists* were killed deliberately on orders that emanated from the highest levels. Their corpses were dressed in uniforms, guns placed beside them, and photographs taken in an attempt to portray them as legitimate targets," Fernandes said on his website. The film premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival in July. There is a possibility that it will be screened at the annual Jakarta International
Film Festival (JIFFest) in December. JIFFest festival manager Nauval Yazid said the festival had not finished selecting movies but acknowledged that Balibo was among them. "I haven't received any official notification from the government about the banning of the film," said Nauval. Film Censorship Institute (LSF) chairman Mukhlis Paeni refused to comment on the Foreign Ministry's statement. "I can't give you any comments before I see the film," he said. In 2006, the LSF banned four films at JIFFest: The Black Road about the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and three about Timor Leste, namely Tales of Crocodiles, Passabe and Timor Loro Sae.

Indonesia's Parliament votes to require disabled pedestrians to wear signs "identifying them as handicapped JAKARTA -- Disabled pedestrians in Indonesia are required to wear signs identifying them as handicapped under new traffic regulations passed unanimously by parliament. Amendments to the Traffic and Transport Law state "handicapped pedestrians must wear special and clear signs which can be easily recognised by other road users." The lawmaker in charge of the committee which drafted the amendments, Ahmad Muqowam of the Islam-based United Development Party, said they were designed to protect disabled people from road accidents. "This is a humanistic act. It's for their safety on the streets," he told AFP. Asked what the signs should read or where people should wear them on their bodies, he said this was up to
the government to decide at a later date. "They won't be penalised if they flout the rule; it's only a precaution for their safety," he added. Transport experts said the law was preposterous and the government should focus on providing facilities such as level footpaths and wheelchair ramps rather than requiring people to wear signs. "It is strange when handicapped people are asked to carry extra burdens and obligations," Institute of Transportation Studies chairman Darmaningtyas said. Association of the Parents of Disabled Children chief Hendratmoko said: "This is a mistake. Why should our children put signs on their bodies? "I don't understand what's motivated the lawmakers. They should give protection by providing
facilities for the disabled. There are hardly any facilities even in a big city like Jakarta." Critics have complained that the amended law gives priority to car drivers over pedestrians and those using public transport, and runs counter to efforts to encourage people to take buses to alleviate pollution and traffic jams. The Indonesian capital, a city of some 12 million people, is choked daily by traffic gridlock (pictured) but there are almost no facilities for pedestrians - ablebodied or otherwise - except footbridges. The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy has predicted that by as soon as 2014 Jakarta could experience total gridlock, where all road space is filled with barely moving vehicles.

What’s On ? A Midsummer Night's Dream in Bali William Shakespeare's Classic Adapted in a Balinese Version at Ubud Writers and Readers Festival October 7, 10 and 11. This year's Ubud Writers and Readers Festival theme is 'Suka Duka', which roughly translated become 'Solidarity and Compassion' or "through thick and thin." On one level, "Suka Duka" defines the shared support that communities in Bali offer to each other in times of joy and sorrow. To explore this theme and the diverse talents of the communities in Bali, theatre firefly will present a contemporary Balinese version of the Shakespearean classic, A Midsummer Night's Dream in October. This magical Balinese adaptation of Shakespeare's classic explores our relationship with ourselves, our environment and each other - dissolving the boundaries between audience and actor, East and West, seen and unseen. Featuring some of Bali's most talented performers along with professionals from England and America, the production will also showcase our talented youngsters, giving the opportunity for performers with a variety of backgrounds and experience to work together. Directed by South African theatre maker Rehane Abrahams, with digital gamelan and video installation designed by Noe saKAna, this feast for the senses promises to delight audiences of all ages and backgrounds. About the Production The show will be presented outdoors as a site-specific work at the ARMA Museum and Resort. This is a unique venue for the performing arts where actors and audience can blend into one unique world. The production is not limited to the physical boundaries of the stage and the actors no longer have to be separated from the audience, allowing them to be more immersed and interactive in their theatre experience. The resulting performance is a rich one. Actors, audience and the space in which they inhabit are all intertwined in a unique relationship. The nature of the site means the audience, performers and environment will all interact in a rich performance, dissolving boundaries and offering new experiences for both performer and audience alike.
One of the most important themes to be explored by this production is our relationship with our environment. Many of the costumes will be constructed from recycled waste both organic and man made, mixing rice straw with plastic bags or discarded offering cloths. The costumes will be designed to express natural life mingling with petrochemical by-products to create a new mutation in form. The current production poses the question what happens to a water spirit when the stream he or she lives in is full of chemicals from a factory, and how can we express this visually? In keeping with the creative uses of recycled materials theme, instruments for the younger performers are created from found and recycled materials. These will be used to punctuate the fairies choral speaking of Oberon and Titania's lines. The rest of the soundscape will be made from sampled environmental sounds and sampled gamelan to create an electronic score that will enhance the atmosphere and provide accompaniment for dance sequences without overwhelming the performance. Projecting across water and other natural features uniquely available on the ARMA grounds, the performance will rely heavily on the use of video in which the audience become immersed and forms part of the environment. Using layers of transparent cloth in between the audience and throughout the performance space, the projections bring the audience and the performers into one space. The combination of the diverse cast, unique costumes, outdoor venue, soundscapes and video installations will create a rich and contemporary atmosphere in which to experience Shakespeare classic work and a multimedia feast for the senses for audiences of all ages. The Director Rehane Abrahams has a BA and performers Diploma from the University of Cape Town, South Africa and has worked as a professional actor and theatremaker for the past 20 years. She founded numerous theatre companies including Mothertongue www.mothertongue.co.za, of which she is co-founder and co-director. A published
playwright, her work with Mothertongue is studied in the contemporary South African theatre module at universities in South Africa. She is also an educator and has worked with at risk and differentlyabled students in South Africa, in Somerset, England and the Bay Area. This is her second larger scale work in Indonesia, her play 'Spice Root' featured composer Aloysius Suwardi with a cast of 6 dancers and musicians from Solo and traveled to theatres in South Africa. This play formed part of a seven year cycle ('Body of Work/Water') of four performance works spanning South Africa, England, Indonesia and Malaysia to address personal and social issues of colonialism, race and identity with particular reference to the Indian Ocean. The current production of A Midsummer Night's Dream marks a new cycle in her theatremaking which she calls 'A New Geography of the Heart' that focuses on environmental performance and our immersion in landscapes of being. Japan's mobster underlings go back to school They're members of the biggest, meanest organised crime group in Japan, but these tattooed gangsters are being sent back to school by their godfathers. Under new laws, mob bosses can be sued for the misdeeds of their underlings. So the leaders of the feared Yamaguchi-gumi have begun testing their mobsters' knowledge of the laws. They've drawn up a 12-page test paper which questions them on a range of banned activities, from bootlegging fuel to dumping industrial waste. For decades, the Yakuza has been the violent underbelly of Japanese society. Tattooed toughs and punks without pinkies, celebrated and denigrated alike in movies, books and comics. But these mobsters are feeling the pinch. For a start, the global economic downturn been bad for business and now tough new anti-mob laws are also squeezing these enterprising gangsters. For example, Yakuza dons can now be sued for crimes committed by their subordinates, meaning they can be cleaned out if their underlings mess up. Masahiro Tamura is a former chief of the Fukuoka Prefectural Police, a veteran yakuza hunter who commanded a force of 12,000 officers. "I think this is a good move, because it puts the responsibility on the crime bosses to control their gangsters. It means innocent people are less likely to be targeted," he said. The crime bosses are looking for ways to beat the news laws so they can save their own skins. And to do that, they've sent their mobsters back to the classroom. During a raid in central Japan this week, police found a 12-page test paper for yakuza members. One question asks, "What kind of activities are banned?" And the correct answer: Dumping industrial waste, phone fraud scams, bootlegging fuel and theft of construction equipment. Former police chief Masahiro
Tamura says the Yakuza are merely evolving to suit the new environment. "I am not surprised at all that the Yakuza are studying the law. The last thing they want is to be fined large amounts or have costs awarded against them in court," he said. And the godfathers of Japanese crime believe they've already found a few legal loopholes in the new laws. This was one briefing note recently distributed to Yakuza members of one group:
"It is now illegal to give financial rewards or promote someone who was involved in a hit against a member of a rival gang. But it is not illegal to give them a salary through a front company and promote them within that organisation." So there you have it: Some free legal advice from Japan's mafia bosses: Don't pay the hit man directly, instead give him a job in a front company and a salary. So from busting heads on the street to cramming heads for exams, life has never been so cerebral for Japan's Yakuza hard men.

Clooney 'training' Damon for 'sexiest man' mantle Actor George Clooney pledged to help his friend and fellow thespian Matt Damon shape up to reclaim the title of "sexiest man alive." "Matt is very competitive with both Brad [Pitt] and myself, and Brad and I are two-time 'sexiest men alive,' and Matt's only won it that one time, and I kinda consider that a fluke," Clooney quipped. "Having seen him recently, he's got a lot of work to
do if he wants to get back up there," he said. "But I'm going to work with him and he's going to run a strong campaign this year." Damon was named 'sexiest man alive' by People magazine in 2007, for his piercing blue eyes and family-guy demeanour. But he gained almost 13.5 kilograms eating pizza and drinking beer for his latest role as a whistleblower in film The Informant! - the last time Clooney saw him. Since then, Damon has actually shed the weight. Clooney and Pitt remain the only two-time recipients of the honour in 1997 and 2006, and 1995 and 2000, respectively. The pair have shamelessly campaigned for Damon in the past. Actor Hugh Jackman won last year. "Matt was pretty upset about the whole Hugh Jackman thing," Clooney commented. "I'm going to train him, I'm going to work with him, and with any luck at all..."
Clooney, with a bandage on his hand after slamming a car door on it accidentally, was in Toronto promoting the film Men Who Stare at Goats. In the film, scoop-hungry journalist Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor) happens upon Clooney's character, Lyn Cassady, embarking on a mission to find Bill Django (Jeff Bridges), founder of the US Army's secret "psychic soldier" program, in Iraq. The film is based on a book by Jon Ronson about the army's experimentation with New Age concepts and the paranormal, for instance the ability to kill goats by staring at them, begun in the 1970s. His hand "should be fine in two weeks," Clooney said. Others who have received the People magazine accolade, which has been announced yearly since 1985 when Mel Gibson was the winner, include Tom Cruise (1990), Denzel Washington (1996) and Jude Law (2004).
Vera Lynn beats Beatles in British chart tussle British World War II armed forces sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn made history when she took the top spot on British album charts with her songs from 70 years ago, beating The Beatles, with their songs from 40 years ago. Nostalgia was the dominant sentiment as Dame Vera shared the limelight with the Fab Four who had four new entries in the top 10 thanks to the reissue of their remastered back catalogue as individual albums and in box sets. But Dame Lynn, 92, saw off the pop music icons with her collection We'll Meet Again: The Very Best Of Vera Lynn, becoming the oldest living artist to have a number one album. The previous record holder was Bob Dylan, who in his 60s topped charts earlier this
12
year with Together Through Life. "I am extremely surprised and delighted, and a big 'thank you' to all my fans for putting me there," Dame Vera said in a statement. Her collection moved up one place to number one in its third week in the charts, while Jamie T was a new entry at number two with Kings And Queens. The Beatles, meanwhile, set a record for most albums simultaneously in the top 10 by a group. The band had been tipped to dominate the charts after a wave of Beatlemania swept London's streets last week when EMI Music reissued digitally remastered editions of the band's albums, along with an interactive video game. It was the first overhaul of their catalogue since 1987. Beatles fans could buy the records as individual albums or in
mono or stereo box sets. Albums bought as part of the box sets did not count individually in terms of the charts. Bookmaker William Hill had cut the odds on The Beatles having all the top 10 albums to 25/1. The band settled for number five with Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, number six with Abbey Road, number nine with Revolver and number 10 with Rubber Soul.

The blonde rushes downstairs to grab the phone, but just as she's dialling, her fouryear-old son comes up and says, 'Mommy! Mommy! Aunty Shirley is hiding in your wardrobe and she's got no clothes on!' The blonde slams the phone down and storms back upstairs into the bedroom, right past her husband, rips open the wardrobe door and sure enough, there is her sister, totally naked and cowering on the floor. 'You rotten 'Bitch', she screams. 'My husband's having a heart attack, and you're running around naked playing hide and seek with the kids!!'

(In)famous sporting dummy spits Number one sporting dummy spitter John McEnroe. (Getty Images: Matthew Lewis, file photo) It is hard being a good sport all the time and Sarina Williams shouldn't feel too bad about losing it at the US Open overnight - here are some of our favourite sporting dummy spitters. 10. Eric Cantona at Crystal Palace The French-born soccer player lost it while playing for Manchester United in January 1995 after being sent off at Crystal Palace. As he was being escorted from the pitch, Cantona ran towards the crowd and launched a kungfu style kick, followed by a series of punches directed at a Crystal Palace fan. But it wasn't all bad news for the footballer-comekung-fu-king, a photo capturing the famous kick featured on the cover of the the band Ash's single, Kung Fu, booting the hit into the charts. 9. Mike Tyson and the ear Probably one of the craziest moments in sporting history - the moment when Tyson launched a cannibal-style attack on Evander Holyfield. The incident has forever marred the former world heavyweight champion's image. Tyson bit off a piece of Holyfield's ear (it was later found on the boxing ring floor) during their bout dubbed The Sound and The Fury, at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, in 1997. Tyson's defence was that he had had enough of Holyfield headbutting him. 8. The Indian cricket team In the summer of 2007 India threatened to quit their Australian tour if off -spinner Harbhajan Singh was found guilty of making racist remarks about Andrew Symonds. Singh allegedly called Symonds a monkey, however after a hearing and an appeal and a bit more name calling between both sides, India and Harbhajan remained in the competition. 7. Ricky Stuart at the World Cup The former Kangaroos coach lost his job during the 2008 Rugby
League World Cup after Australia's loss to New Zealand in the final. In a chance encounter with the game's referee Ashley Klein the next morning, Stuart allegedly screamed "You're the **** that lost us the World Cup", in front of a number of witnesses.

What happened in week two of the AFL finals series? You can analyse, scrutinise, examine, dissect and inspect the second week of the AFL finals for as long as you like. Or you can read the five burning questions, with answers, right here. The choice is yours. Good old Collingwood forever. Yet again they win when they're supposed to lose. What is it about the Magpies when their backs are against the wall? Call it spirit, call it arrogance, call it what you like, but Collingwood take serious exception to being written off. Down on players, down on form and well down on the scoreboard at half-time against Adelaide Crows - the Pies conjured a comeback of the ages to advance to the penultimate weekend of the season. The players were very good, but coach Mick Malthouse was incredible. The Crows were running his team off their legs in the first half, but thereafter Mick reconfigured his midfield set-up and cajoled his men to lift their intensity and their workrate. Collingwood ran so hard after the break you'd have thought Usain Bolt, Pheidippides and the Energizer Bunny were in the 22. The Crows hit back in the last term to put their noses back in front, but John Anthony kicked truly in the dying seconds to ice a remarkable contest. Collingwood will again be the underdogs against Geelong in Saturday's preliminary final. Cats: you've been warned. Wake me up when September ends for the Crows. I'll be asleep for about five minutes, then. That's a little harsh considering Adelaide walloped Essendon by 96 points in an elimination final and against Collingwood were barely seconds away from securing a preliminaryfinal berth. But results speak for themselves, and the Pride Of South Australia have now dropped six of nine finals games under coach Neil Craig. The highpossession, high-speed game that
14
served the Crows so well in the second half of the season was exposed in the MCG cauldron on Saturday night. Either that, or they got a shivering case of the Greg Normans and just choked after leading the Maggies by 32 points in the second quarter. Slice it any way you like, but the fact remains that Adelaide have again fallen short when it matters. Craig insists his gameplan will hold up to the pressure of finals footy, but we'll only believe him once it actually does. Western Bulldogs were good against Brisbane Lions, but next week is a different story. What will win out the Bulldogs' run off half-back or the St Kilda's tackling pressure? That is the million-dollar question heading into their preliminary final on Friday night. The Bulldogs' backmen were superb against Brisbane, with Lindsey Gilbee, Ryan Hargrave and Jarrod Harbrow triggering most of their forward movements. Gilbee is rapidly developing into one of Rodney Eade's most potent attacking weapons, with his speed and perfect disposal on show in the semi-final. But Eade only has to look at St Kilda's qualifyingfinal win over Collingwood to see what Gilbee and co will be up against this week. St Kilda chased and tackled their hearts out, slowly squeezing the life out of the Pies until they could take no more. The Dogs have been warned they won't have the same freedom they were given against the Lions. A big pat on the back for the Lions after getting to September for the first time since 2004. But how far can youth really get you? It's hard to know whether Brisbane Lions' season was a success or not. While they have exceeded most people's expectations, their limp exit on Friday night would have left Michael Voss with a bitter taste in his mouth. The most disappointing aspect of their loss to the Bulldogs was the poor performance of their young guns. Rising Star Daniel Rich, James Polkinghorne and Mitch Clark were all below their best in September, taking some gloss off what were their
breakthrough seasons. There's no doubt these youngsters have had a fantastic 2009 and were probably overawed by the ferocity and speed of finals football. But with the careers of Simon Black, Daniel Bradshaw and Luke Power drawing to a close, the Lion cubs need to make the next step if the premiership cup is to head north of the Tweed River once again. Aren't there two other teams still in the finals? What on earth did they get up to on the weekend? St Kilda and Geelong were given a week off as reward for winning their qualifying finals in the first week of September. Senior coaches Ross Lyon and Mark Thompson were spotted - wearing dark glasses, fake beards and baseball caps - at the semifinals, doing a bit of spying on their opponents for the preliminary finals. OK, we're stretching the truth: they weren't wearing baseball caps. But just because the AFL's top two teams weren't in competitive action, don't think the players were taking it easy. We're reliably informed that training for both teams was “intense, football-focused … as if we we're playing on Saturday”. The Saints and Cats are mindful not to let their troops taper off physically or mentally and this is good thinking. Shane 'That's What I'm Talkin' About' Crawford says “too much of a rest can be a disaster”. Having slept through to Thursday last time we had a public holiday, I do know what he's talkin' about. But in all seriousness, players with niggles will be good to go this week and the odds are stacked in favour of St Kilda and Geelong winning through to the grand final.

Couple caught having sex in Dinosaur used in outback stolen car - at servo nude calendar A couple who attracted the attention of police by having sex at a petrol station in a Northern Territory town have been arrested. Police were called to the service station in Adelaide River, 110 kilometres south of Darwin, to move the couple on last night. But they soon discovered the car had been stolen from Jabiru earlier in the day. Watch Commander Bob Harrison says police also found the driver was heavily intoxicated. "We received a call that two persons were having sexual intercourse in the passenger seat of a vehicle at the petrol bowser," he said. "We attended and we asked them to stop what they were doing and they didn't seem to want to, but they finally did. "They were intoxicated and we arrested the driver for breath analysis and they gave a reading of 0.179 per cent.
Residents of the tiny town Muttaburra, in Queensland's central west, have bared all for a calendar shoot. The town's Community Development Association is raising money for an ambulance defibrillator and the local school, and came up with the idea for a "slightly risque" calendar. Muttaburra is famous for the Muttaburrasaurus dinosaur discovered in the region. The association's secretary, Kerry Robinson, says she had no problems encouraging people to be involved and some interesting props were used. "It was done discreetly - there was only two photographers," she said. "[It] sounds silly but we [used] vegetables, the fire brigade used hoses and hats and gloves, we had a shearing so we had a sheep. "The dinosaur was used - the man who found the dinosaur posed at the dinosaur with his wife.

Steven Johnson expected to play for Geelong against Collingwood A 40-minute training session by Steve Johnson on Friday convinced Geelong coach Mark Thompson that his superstar forward was ready to return to action. Thompson said Johnson, who had hip surgery 17 days ago, had amazed the club with his recovery. "He trained for 40 minutes of a skills session on Friday at top pace. He was powerful, explosive, changed direction, he kicked . . . he did everything," Thompson said. "We're really confident he will play." Johnson will add much-needed potency to the Cats' forward line for Saturday night's preliminary final against Collingwood. "We all thought at the time of the surgery that it was it for him this year," Thompson conceded. "We've been amazed." Thompson said the Cats would not take a punt on Johnson's fitness, making it clear he would be close to 100 per cent fit if named. "I want to let people know that we won't play him if he's only half fit or 60 or 70 per cent fit," Thompson said. Johnson, who carried hip soreness through much of the last half of the season, finally travelled to Tasmania to visit surgeon Michael Pritchard in search of answers. "It wasn't as if we were sitting there waiting for it to heal. We were trying everything," Thompson said. "He felt good at times and then at other times he didn't. "One time there I remember on a Wednesday night at training he went out and tried to run and couldn't run. "Then at other times he could play games. "It was a weird injury. Hopefully we've got it worked out, fixed up and he can contribute. "The doctors and Steven decided to go in and have a look and it was something that could be fixed up relatively easily. "To give him a chance, we needed to do that. If it works and he comes out and plays, well, then it's a great decision." Speaking on Channel Nine on Sunday, Johnson declared: "I'm feeling 100 per cent at the moment. "I'd say only if something else goes wrong with me ... that would be the only thing that stops me," he said. Johnson started slowly at the start of last week, but lifted the intensity as the week went on. "I trained pretty lightly early in the
week, that's the first time I've started running," Johnson said. "On Friday we had a solid session and I did about 60 to 70 per cent of that. "Hopefully the next couple of days before the game I can build on that and just be feeling good coming into game day. "We had a solid session on Friday arvo and had the weekend off." Max Rooke, so important as a defensive forward capable of holding the ball in and stopping rebound, is the other major injury story at Geelong. Rooke missed the qualifying final against the Western Bulldogs with a quadricep strain, but is also given a strong chance of returning. Quad injuries, though, are notoriously difficult to shake.

Confucius say Paris wise, but Oscar wiser Words of wisdom from American socialite Paris Hilton are to be immortalised alongside remarks by some of the greatest thinkers of all time in the latest edition of the Oxford Book of Quotations. Hilton, the socialite turned reality TV star and retailing phenomenon, is listed in the latest version of the 65-year-old dictionary, released this week, alongside the likes of Confucius, Oscar Wilde and Stephen Hawking. Her contribution? "Dress cute wherever you go - life is too short to blend in." Hilton, 28, was delighted to be featured in the book, which is a renowned list of memorable sayings.
"So cool that I have a quote in the dictionary," she wrote on her Twitter page. Another new entry in the seventh edition of the Oxford University Press publication is Sarah Palin. The former vice-presidential candidate makes the cut for her most famous quip: "What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull? Lipstick." More than 20,000 new quotations have been added to the dictionary, including one credited to President Barack Obama that echoes words spoken by Martin Luther King Jr: "The arc of history is long,
but it bends toward justice." Others came from the likes of British author Terry Pratchett using "embuggerance" to describe his Alzheimer's - and from author Fay Weldon: "Guilt is to motherhood as grapes are to wine".

Bush topped a poll of the worst examples of mangled English, followed closely by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Donald Rumsfeld. French footballer-cum philospher Eric Cantona and former US president Bill Clinton also produced prime examples of gobbledegook, according to the online poll of 4000 people inspired by the Plain English Campaign. The notoriously languagechallenged Mr Bush romped to the top accolade for his: "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." Second came bodybuilderturned-actor-turned-California Governor Mr Schwarzenegger, who during an election campaign in 2003 minted the puzzling: "I think that gay marriage should be between a man and a woman." The rest of the top 10 in the poll, commissioned by an insurance company after it won an award from
the Plain English Campaign, were: 3. Mr Rumsfeld, in February 2002: "Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns: the ones we don't know we don't know." 4. Murray Walker, motor racing commentator: "The lead car is absolutely unique, except for the one behind it which is identical." 5. John Motson, football commentator: "For those of you watching in black and white, Spurs are playing in yellow." 6. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, explaing budget plans to lawmakers in July this year: "Total spending will continue to rise and it will be a zero per cent rise in 2013-14." 7. Mr Clinton, in 1998 grand jury testimony about Monica Lewinsky: "It depends upon what the meaning of the word 'is' is. If 'is' means 'is and never has been'
that's one thing - if it means 'there is none', that was a completely true statement." 8. Cantona, 1995: "When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea." 9. Mr Bush, July 2001: "I know what I believe. I will continue to articulate what I believe and what I believe - I believe what I believe is right." 10. Rafael Nadal unfazed by 'really nice' male kisser A FAN of tennis player Rafael Nadal, who breached US Open security to embrace the Spaniard courtside, faces jail time after he was charged with interfering with a sporting event. Nadal was in the midst of changing shirts after he beat France's Gael Monfils when the male fan leaped out of the stands onto the centre court in Arthur Ashe Stadium and put his arms around Nadal before kissing him on the cheek. Noam Aorta, 23, of Queens, New York, who sprinted
past courtside security to reach the 23-year-old Nadal, faces up to one year in jail and a $US5000 ($5800) fine for criminal trespassing. District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement that authorities took such security breaches seriously after previous incidents including former world number one Monica Seles, who was stabbed in the back by a spectator in 1993 in Germany. The stabbing severely hampered her career. "For me it wasn't a problem," Nadal, who appeared
unruffled, said about the encounter. "The guy was really nice. He was a great fan, he said 'I love you' and he kiss me."

Officers were called to a service station at Casuarina just after midnight and say the 44year-old man was visibly drunk. "I'm told it was a saratoga, not a very good one either, only about 30 centimetres long apparently," he said. "We don't know why he
produced it and where he got it from. But yeah, he was intent on showing it to them." Police say the man later recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.235 per cent. Superintendent Farmer says he is unsure what happened to the fish. "As far as I know, it's still with the car now," he said. "I don't know whether there were other people there who may have been able to take care of the fish or whether he's going to have a surprise in his vehicle when he gets back to it. "It's not a good idea to keep
dead fish in your car." The man is due to appear in court along with another alleged high-range drink-driver who had only just been released on bail after crashing a stolen car. Police say the man went drinking again, stole a ute, backed it into a parked car and later crashed it into a moving car, before ending up in a stormwater drain near Darwin's CBD. The 28-year-old has been refused bail, and police say he did not have a licence to begin with.
Explorer's letter comes in from the cold The 1912 letter from Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen was found recently. A letter from the first man to reach the South Pole has resurfaced in Hobart. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen spent 13 days in Hobart after completing the expedition in March 1912. He was offered honorary membership with the Derwent Sailing Squadron and his letter of acceptance has now been found behind a filing cabinet at the club. The president of Tasmania's Maritime Museum,
24
Colin Denny, says the letter is a valuable piece of Hobart's maritime history. "The first place he came to after reaching the South Pole is Hobart and he was here for 13 days," he said. "And it was from here that he telegraphed the King of Norway and Nansen his supporter and told them the story of him reaching the pole and it was from here that the story spread around the world." Derwent Squadron Commodore, Peter Geeves says the letter is a unique piece of antarctic and maritime history. "Obviously there were telegraphs sent from Hobart on
Amundsen's return to Hobart before he left to sail back home, a lot of reporting but we don't believe there was a lot of this original letterwork - he was a very secretive person from what I understand," he said.

Kim Clijsters wins US Open final with 7-5 6-3 win over Caroline Wozniacki Kim Clijsters won the US Open for the second time on Sunday, defeating Caroline Wozniacki 7-5 6-3 to complete one of the most stunning comebacks in modern sports history. In so doing, the Belgian became the first mother to win a Grand Slam title since Australian Evonne Goolagong in 1980 and the first wildcard, man or woman, to win a US Open title in the history of the tournament. The win came just five weeks after she returned from a 27-month retirement and it left her on her knees and in tears after smashing home the winner at the net. “I don't have words for this,” Clijsters said. “I am just glad I could come back and defend my title from 2005. “I just wanted to start these three tournaments to get back into the rhythm of tennis so I have to thank the USTA (United States Tennis Association) for giving me a wildcard to come back here. “Winning the first one helped me to keep my nerves at the end.” “Now it will be really exciting to go home and live the family life again.” Wozniacki paid tribute to Clijsters saying: “She is such a great girl. “I am so excited that she came back. She played a great match and deserves the trophy.” The 26-year-old Clijsters won her only Grand Slam title here in 2005 after losing four finals, three to compatriot Justine Henin and one to Jennifer Capriati of the United States. She was unable to defend the title the following year as she was injured and then in May, 2007, she rocked the tennis world by retiring, saying that she had had enough of injuries and the tennis lifestyle. In her time away from the sport, she married and had a baby daughter and it was only at the start of the year that she started to consider a comeback. That came in Cincinnati in early August, and Flushing Meadows was just her third tournament since she returned. True to form, Clijsters, who defeated sisters Serena and Venus Williams on her way to the final, opened strongly, holding serve and then grabbing the first break of the match to lead 2-0. The 19-year-old Wozniacki, playing in her first Grand Slam final, counter-attacked to break back in the next game, converting her fifth break point with a raking forehand drive that Clijsters failed to control. The Dane held serve and then broke again as Clijsters struggled to contain her opponent's length and variety of shot. With her 18-month old daughter Jada watching in the players' box as well as husband Brian Lynch, Clijsters had three break back points to level at 3-3 but failed to take them. Wozniacki, like Clijsters the daughter of a professional footballer, kept up the pressure and drew mistakes from the Belgian to set up two more break points for a 5-2 lead. Clijsters dug deep to close to 4-3 and in the next game she stepped into the court to send Wozniacki onto the back foot and the Dane double faulted on double break point. The former world No. 1 looked set to take a 5-4 lead, but Wozniacki scrambled her way back

into the game and stunned the Belgian by breaking her serve for a third time in four attempts. She served for the first set, but again Clijsters went on the offensive to level at 5-5. Wozniacki had two further break points in the 11th game, but this time Clijsters steadied to take a 6-5 lead. She then broke Wozniacki's suspect serve for a fourth time wrapping up the first set in 54 minutes. In stark contrast to the opener, games went with serve in the second set until the sixth game, when Clijsters set up triple break point and she made no mistake by banking the first of them for a 4-2 lead. Clijsters held serve to lead 5-2, but had to serve out for the match as Wozniacki made it 5-3. She set up match point and drove Wozniacki wide with another big forehand. The Dane scrambled the ball back, but Clijsters dashed in to the net to hit home the title-winning smash.

A second experiment was conducted with a mouse that had been partially sedated by a veterinarian, and that rodent calmed down considerably as he floated in the air. According to a paper published by Mr Liu and his colleagues, under repeated levitation even mice that were not sedated began acting normally inside the special cage, eating and drinking while they floated off the surface.

after Friday night's clash with Melbourne Storm. Ox will surely be trying to forget one of those missed tackles, when Billy Slater stepped around Orford to touch down for a 14-0 lead five minutes before half-time, a position from which Melbourne were never going to be stopped. In contrast to Orford's performance, Billy Slater, Cameron Smith and Greg Inglis all ran riot on the field as the Manly skipper struggled. All in all, it was a dismal night for the reigning premiers against a Storm playing more like the benchmark team they have been for the past three seasons. Can Jarryd Hayne really take the Eels from 14th place to the top of the tree? Yes he can, but Sunday's performance against St George Illawarra proved the Eels aren't just a oneman-band. Billy Slater has been AWOL from Melbourne Storm in recent weeks. Did he manage to hitchhike back in time for Friday night? By his own lofty standards, Slater's season has hardly measured up to expectations, but the little man from Nambour dumped his swag on the sidelines at Etihad Stadium to put in his best game of the year and prove his recent indifferent form was simply a break of habit. Slater almost single-handedly demoralised Manly with a four-try haul in his side's 40-12 win in the qualifying final. His dominance also saw his love affair with the stadium continue; he's now scored three hattricks and 11 tries from five games there. In his star-billing, Slater thrilled with a full medley of tricks, ending with a grand finale of him dancing around three Manly defenders to cross for his fourth try in the dying minutes of the game. As for the preliminary final and another chance to rule the roost at Etihad, Slater has warned: “It's finals footy now. If you can't get up for a semi-final, you won't get up for any game.” Whatever happened to 'finals footy'? We are always told that finals produce a unique style of football. They are grinding affairs with minimal ball movement and not many points, with teams simply aiming to survive and fight another day. Apparently, the Broncos and Titans didn't get that message. The south-east Queensland derby on Saturday produced 13 tries and 72 points in one of the most free-flowing finals in recent memory. One would think that, based on the scoreline, the defence of both sides would need some serious work if they want to keep their September dream alive. But a match total of just 64 missed tackles (compared to the weekend's average of 76) suggests it's the

Brisbane Lions chasing Andrew Raines and Richard Brisbane Lions will be aggressive in this year's trade period as they seek to plug weaknesses in a list they see as being just a few quality players short of becoming premiership contenders. Coach Michael Voss has a handful of experienced campaigners and possibly a firstround draft pick that could be used as bait to lure a big fish. Brisbane is expected to cut a deal with Richmond's Andrew Raines, while ex-Lions midfielder Richard Hadley could also return to the Gabba from Carlton. Brisbane need speedy outside players who can use the ball well, but their shortcomings at stoppages in key games this year suggests they also need to bolster their ball-winning ability. Voss identified the inability to win contested possessions as a
main factor in Brisbane's 51-point semi-final loss to the Western Bulldogs on Friday night. Midfield general Simon Black desperately needs another strongbodied midfielder to share the load and Hadley could provide the chopout he needs. Raines, son of former Brisbane Bears player Geoff Raines, is out of favour at Punt Rd. But the Lions know his dash from defence and another creative defender would boost their back six. While those two trades would bolster the ranks, Brisbane would also love to land a top-line player, goalkicking midfielder or even a classy half-forward. Midfielder Tom Scully is the unbackable favourite to be this season's No. 1 draft pick, and talent scouts suggest there are 10-15 other quality players before the pickings become slim.
The Lions are well stocked for big men. Although it has become apparent they lack an extra tall defender against sides with quality key forwards, ruck sensation Mitch Clark might be reinvented again next year as a centre half-back. With Matthew Leuenberger and Jamie Charman expected to be available for pre-season, Clark will be freed up to play key position.

Brawn's Rubens Barrichello wins Italian Grand Prix Veteran Rubens Barrichello produced a beautifully-measured drive from fifth place on the grid to win the Italian Grand Prix ahead of his Brawn GP team-mate Jenson Button. The 37-year-old Brazilian made the most of his one-stop strategy and a fine start to finish 2.8 seconds ahead of the 29-year-old Englishman and endorse his challenge for the drivers' world championship. Australian Mark Webber had a disastrous day, retiring on the opening lap after tangling with Robert Kubica's BMW, but retained fourth place in the championship. Button, winner of six of the seven opening races of the season, remains on top with 80 points, but Barrichello is now second with 66 points, having cut his teammate's advantage from 16 to 14 points with just four races remaining. Defending world champion Briton Lewis Hamilton, who started from pole, looked certain to come home third for McLaren Mercedes, but crashed heavily at the Curva di Lesmo on the final lap and failed to finish. This left local hero Finn Kimi Raikkonen to take the third podium place for Ferrari ahead of German Adrian Sutil of Force India, two times champion Fernando Alonso, who was fifth for Renault, and Finn Heikki Kovalainen in the second McLaren. German Nick Heidfeld finished seventh for BMW Sauber and compatriot Sebastian Vettel eighth for Red Bull. Barrichello's win was his second this season and 11th in his long 284 races career, lifting him into a strong position to catch Button in this unpredictable season. The Brawn pair now looking certain to deliver the constructors championship to their eponymous team-chief Ross Brawn in the outfit's first season.
