letter from the executive director Dear Friends, This summer, we opened our eleventh school. The launch of KIPP Excelencia Community Prep marks the first KIPP elementary school in the Bay Area, the first KIPP school on the Peninsula, and the first KIPP school in a new community in the Bay Area in over a decade. It is born of the hope, struggle, and resolve of an extraordinary group of parents; now their vision carries forth in the dreams of our youngest scholars who are embarking on their educational journeys. Coming full circle, we also welcomed seven former KIPPsters — graduates of Barnard, Cal State East Bay, Notre Dame de Namur, San Francisco State, Spelman, UC Riverside, and University of San Francisco — to our growing KIPP Bay Area Schools team. We now serve over 3,800 students in eleven schools located in some of the highest-need communities across the Bay Area, and we have over 1,100 alumni in college. As we expand to serve more students and launch new schools, we aim to position a generation of children who might otherwise be in the shadows, to be creators — not just consumers — of the culture of innovation that surrounds us here in the Bay Area. Our mantra is to get better as we get bigger. Through our focus on restorative justice practices, social emotional learning, personalized learning and continued access to technology, and the elevated rigor that the Common Core State Standards require,  we continue to cultivate great teachers and school leaders, which remains the heart of our approach. We are committed to transparency and continuous learning as we grow to serve more students. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all of the educators, partners, and investors who travel with us on this journey to support our KIPPsters to and through college and help us to improve as we amplify our impact. Sincerely,

Beth Sutkus Thompson Executive Director

It takes more than dedication to be a KIPP teacher; you have to find that magical joy and curiosity in the everyday lessons, in the interactions with students, and in your own self-enrichment. KIPP Excelencia Community Prep was founded through the efforts of parents in Redwood City who were seeking a high-quality, college-preparatory option for their students.

“As a public school system, we make a unique commitment to support students all the way through college, because the data is clear: college completion is what is going to allow our students maximum flexibility to chart their paths in life, uplift their families and communities, and fuel the next generation of innovation and economic progress.” Beth Sutkus Thompson, Executive Director

question 3

are our students progressing and achieving academically? Over the past two years, our teachers have embraced the new Common Core State Standards, which enhance rigor and critical thinking in the classroom. This shift ensures that all students gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in college and the workplace. The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) is a state-led service that provides assessments to measure progress against these standards. Combined with MAP and AP exams, SBAC provides our teachers with measures of achievement that provide a holistic view of individual student progress toward college- and career-readiness.
