THE ISSUE Cycling’s popularity in the 1960s dropped significantly due to the technology of motor vehicles. The importance of cycling is used as a method to promote a sustainable commute in hopes that it will help reduce

pesky pollution and traffic

congestion.

PROJECT BRIEF A cycling oriented programme built to serve Transport of London (TfL)’s sustainable travel strategy which is bringing back the popularity of cycling to help London’s pollution and congestion. This project explores the creation of an indoor cycle route infrastructure that wraps around an existing 4 storey building, turning it into a visually-appealling, purposebuilt headquarters and cycle through shop for cyclists of London.

OBJECTIVE 1

To hone and cater for London’s cycling culture.

2

To increase the numbers and interest of active cyclists (in hopes of preventing congestion).

3

To intrigue non-cyclist the activity of cycling.

TARGET AUDIENCE Cyclist (primarily), public

budging traffic

THE CONCEPT A concept extracted from London’s cycling infrastructure history: budging traffic: taking

away a portion of

something rapid to make space for a new element (that is beneficial to the plan, like how cycle lanes shifted the existing traffic. TfL budged Londons existing congested roads to implement a

healtier

commute

method).

New

element made from the protion that was taken. Juxtapositioning victorian architecture with contemporary.

*concept model illustrating: taking away parts of the cube to create a new element within the cubes. *cut-out areas creates opportunity to highlight cycle juctions.

10

THE EXTERIOR Aim to create an cycle path system for cyclist to commute within the building: Propose to create a parasite structure that has a one way loop system as it suggests an effective way finding system and is space efficient. By erecting a steel structure to support the elavated cycle path, allows the interior space to have more room for mobility.

Exisitng mass.

Parts that are subtracted/ Cut outs that will highlight cycle path juctions.

New mass additions.

BASEMENT: BIKE DINE-IN CAFE The design of the order area is referenced to a park as cycling is an activity outdoors where its paths are usually wrapping a park. The dining space offers 2 types of seating arrangement.

In

this

arrangement,

tables of 8 are introduced, designed for individual visitors bringing their bikes where they can park near them. The panels separating the two sides of the table rotates to create seperation for groups of 2-6 seatings.

When the doors are open, it elongates the space of the workshop. The direction of openings are indicated on the flooring. (Doors are able to function as normal doors). The meeting space is flexible in terms of furniture arrangement. The partitions are able to function as able or a writing board. As seen, when the tables and doors are closed, its creates 2 private rooms.

elements

in

this

programme as it helps to create a safer mobility atmosphere. Cyclists are required to dismount in areas that dont have a cycle path flooring or areas that have a dismount sign. The 1st floor workshop space of the 2nd floor is more opened and is generously lit by the new sky light as it faces the south side. The multi-functional tables and partitions that are seen in the first floor are repeated here.

The space itself has different ways to capture different moments when spending time in the kitchen. The community kitchen is the media that will bring families together.

34

35

36

THE RAMEH

Rameh means ‘Gathering’ in Kristang. The Spatial structure of the dining/ seating space was developed from a calendar grid where the special events of 2018 had been marked down. Those marks created shapes that are then folded in a certain manner to create the structure base of the space. 4 structures from 4 shapes are combined to form a 3D space and is used to determine the spaces’ floor, wall, and celing of the dining space.
