Glass Studio
Blacksburg, Virginia Spring 2018: 5 weeks Creating a special studio space using simple construction and clear division of space for a glass artist client where he can work himself and teach students. The minimalist form brings in soft diffused light during the day and emits an ethereal glow at night through the polycarbonate. The open floor plan allows for the multi-use of the space, while the material division allows for more intimate moments. Project partner: Amanda Kubicki

Pavilion: Detail and Tectonics
Blacksburg, Virginia Fall 2017: 2 weeks An alley connecting downtown to the farmers market is transformed by the pavilion. The parametric design composed of translucent acrylic sheets and reflective glass carves out spaces to walk, pause and sit, thus creating a unique experience during the day and night. It began as a study of spatial enclosures: public, semi- public, semi- private and private. Connected through networked systems, materiality, movement, atmosphere, and memory, spatial definitions fluctuate based upon experience- both past and present.

Chicago Studio: Mixed-Use High Rise
West Loop, Chicago Fall 2018 In the age of social media, people are increasingly projecting their lives. What if that transparency while sharing on the digital interface became manifest through the physical architecture? The mixed use skyscraper hosts 372 residential units, amenity spaces, an Equinox Fitness Club, Hotel and other support spaces. Each apartment unit has 2 levels. At the living room level, most demising walls are transparent. Thus, the whole floor is set as a performance stage. Project Partner: Xuanyu Li

Way of Living: An Evolution
? Human settlement started with primitive houses built by clay with an opening for getting in and out, followed by modern houses with small windows to look out into the landscape and create a connection with the interior and exterior, to the glass boxes of today.
In the time of Social Media where we Snapchat how we wake up, to Instagram what we eat, and Tweet how we participate in the day, or even sharing the eccentricities of burping, to sharing on Facebook how we socialize, our lives, are truly out there, diminishing the line between whats truly public and what is private.
21
The walls separating each unit are clear glass, people living inside see through their neighbors’ living spaces. You become the onlooker as well as the object of view.
The sleeping area is marked by an interplay of frosted and opaque walls conveying various degrees of privacy. 21

Pavilion: Design-Build
Blacksburg, Virginia Spring 2018: 2 weeks The structure on the plaza utilizes sophisticated digital tools to fabricate a system of intelligent joinery using a lowcost material like dimensional lumber. The fabricated assembly provides a social space for engagement in the middle of the Burchard plaza. As the Project Manager, I helped organize, co-lead & co-design a weekend charrette comprising of 40 students from the School of A+D, led by Guest facilitator, Gavin Robb. This was followed by the fabrication process by a select few.

Public Pavilion: Oyster Research Hatchery
Norfolk, Virginia Spring 2020: 2 days Wrapped in stretched fabric on the facade, the indoor-outdoor pavilion has cylindrical skylights, resembling the visual language of the oyster tanks. They bring in light to the interior gathering spaces and the algae tanks. The algae tanks, being situated above the larvae culture tanks are gravity fed, rather than pumped. By deconstructing and spreading the process of oyster research, it is made more accessible for the visitors. This helps in bringing awareness about the health of the Chesapeake Bay and the significance of oyster farming.
