SOUTHERN AFRICA WITH KIRKER KIRKER TAILOR–MADE We would like to help you make the most of your holiday to Southern Africa; depending on the time you have available, and your sense of adventure, we strongly recommend combining two or more of the contrasting destinations. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss your personal requirements and offer our recommendations; a number of our sales team have visited the properties and places we feature. We have prepared several suggested itineraries throughout the brochure to highlight some of our most popular holidays – we must stress that these are a guideline only and that we offer complete flexibility. We have chosen our favourite hotels in each destination – these may not always be the cheapest alternatives so less expensive itineraries can also be arranged along similar lines.
Boer Wars. Two or three nights should be sufficient in the Drakensberg Mountains or on safari and the time you elect to spend on the beach is really dependent on you.
SAFARI, SOUTH AFRICA The Kruger and Sabi Sands are best from April to December. Although there is no rainy season as such, there will be more rainfall from January to March and travelling later in the year (September to December) means that there is less foliage in the bush, and sightings should be better. The South African winter, although quite cold in the evenings, is also an excellent time as the animals are more active than in the heat of the summer. Winter temperatures during the day will warm up to a pleasant 18 – 20 degrees centigrade. Malaria-free safari in the Port Elizabeth area is becoming increasingly popular and is excellent all year round. Although there are fewer animals, the reserves are also smaller so sightings are common. The Madikwe Game Reserve in the north is also malaria-free and offers fantastic game viewing in a vast area of rolling hills and riverside forest.
BOTSWANA The Okavango Delta floods between July and October as a result of the rains in the Angolan Highlands, hundreds of miles to the north. The climate in Botswana itself is subtropical. The cooler period is from May to August which overlaps with the floods, making it the best season for tourists visiting the delta. The Chobe National Park is recommended all year round.

OUR DESTINATIONS Before deciding where and when to go, please call us and take advantage of our expertise. We would be delighted to share our own experiences and help you make the most of the time you have available.
THE WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA The height of the summer from December to March is the most popular for tourism, however, there are good reasons to visit at other times. April, May and early June offer pleasantly mild temperatures – and fewer people – whilst the spring months of October and November are when much of the country’s flora is in full bloom. The Overberg should be included in any itinerary if you are travelling between July and November. This is when the southern right whales converge on the warmer waters around Hermanus and Walker Bay – a spectacular natural wonder that is worth the journey alone. We recommend at least three nights in Cape Town, however a week long holiday using the city as a base to discover some of the surrounding scenery including the Winelands is also recommended. The Garden Route is an excellent addition at any time of the year. September to April are the warmer months, although even in May and June the weather can be very pleasant and the Indian Ocean waters are warm enough to swim in throughout the year.
A trip to Africa is really not complete without a visit to the magnificent Victoria Falls. You can fly directly to Livingstone from Johannesburg and Kruger and flights connect from Durban and Cape Town. The Zambezi basin, above the Falls, experiences a rainy season from late November to early April and it is during this time when the Falls are at their most dramatic. Zambia’s rugged wilderness offers exceptional safari experiences, especially during the dry months from April to November and we feature lodges and camps in Lower Zambezi and South Luangwa National Parks. There are plenty of flight connections to Livingstone and to various points in South Africa.
MAURITIUS This beautiful tropical island has warm weather all year round and offers some of the world’s most beautiful beach hotels. Different parts of the island have their own micro climates so the weather can be variable. The island is in a cyclone belt that sometimes brings rain during the period from November to March but you should feel the benefits of the sun every day of the year.
KWAZULU-NATAL, SOUTH AFRICA There are few places in the world with such diversity as KwaZulu-Natal, and again, depending on your particular interests, should be considered at any time of the year. So much is on offer from beach holidays at The Oyster Box, walking in the Drakensberg Mountains, safari at Thanda and Nambiti plus the famous battlefield tours of Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana. The battlefields cannot be covered in less than two days, and even if you are not a keen historian, you are sure to be moved by the stories of the battles of the Zulu and

KIRKER south africa EXPERT nacho foley, REFLECTS ON HIS recent VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA’S WESTERN CAPE Arriving in Cape Town after an overnight flight we enjoyed the luxury of being driven in a smart transfer vehicle to our hotel on the V&A waterfront. This is the main hub of the city and a great base from which to visit Robben Island and Table Mountain. Dining in a restaurant recommended by the Kirker team gave us the local knowledge that makes all the difference. Collecting a hire car we set off for Hermanus stopping first at Boulders Beach to see the thriving penguin colony, then at Gordon’s Bay to admire the view along the beach before arriving in the Overberg. Hermanus is a popular seafront town best known for its whale watching from September to November but we were delighted to spot a few southern rights from the shore under the late summer sun in March when the town has a more relaxed feel. The short drive from Hermanus to Franschhoek was a real surprise for us. Crossing the Franschhoek Pass the impressive view over the undulating valley below improved by the minute as we approached the town. The countryside resembles Tuscany or Provence and the vines here – at their finest during

harvest time in February and March – produce rivals to anything in Europe. There are many fantastic wine farms open for tastings and a fine array of restaurants in each town. Circling Table Mountain on our ascent from Cape Town with a fine Pinotage in hand, we vowed to return as soon as possible. To follow in Nacho‘s footsteps we recommend the following 7 night holiday: • British Airways overnight flight from Heathrow to Cape Town • Private car transfer from airport to hotel • Three nights at Dock House, Cape Town • Hire car delivered to your hotel • Two nights at Ocean Eleven, Hermanus • Two nights at Last Word Franschhoek (plus one night free until 20 December) • British Airways Overnight flight from Cape Town to London Heathrow Price from £2,249 per person (winter), £2,875 per person (summer)

SAFARI SOUTH AFRICA GREATER KRUGER NATIONAL PARK Originally created in 1898 to control hunting, this iconic national park has been welcoming wildlife enthusiasts ever since. We feature a lodge within the reserves with its own private concession so you will not see vehicles from other lodges during game drives; however, the area is so vast that ‘Big Five’ sightings will be less frequent than in the surrounding private reserves. Fences have been taken down between the national park and the surrounding reserves allowing the local wildlife to roam freely, but there are always restrictions on vehicle movement so staying in a private reserve is very rewarding. The southern end of the park is close to Mpumalanga airport with links to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Livingstone. Skukuza, within the reserve, and Hoedspruit to the north have daily connections to Johannesburg and Cape Town. Jock Safari Lodge The first private lodge to be located within Kruger National Park, Jock is located at the confluence of two rivers which makes it a great location from which to view a spectacular array of wildlife. There are 12 suites, each looking out over one of the river courses; they all have their own private plunge pools, outside showers and thatched viewing decks. The game drives go deep into the rolling hills and rocky outcrops which are spectacular locations to enjoy sundowners and dramatic sunsets. For relaxation, there is a pleasant swimming pool and a restorative spa. Prices from £550 per person, per night (winter) £675 (summer) including all meals and game drives.
SABI SANDS GAME RESERVE The most famous of the private reserves bordering the Kruger National Park, Sabi Sands has a great reputation for the very best game viewing. As there has never been hunting in the reserve the big cats are accustomed to vehicles and the game viewing is phenomenal. Lodges in Sabi Sands are close together so, whilst you have an excellent chance of seeing the ‘Big Five’, you are also more likely to be sharing the experience with other vehicles. Southern lodges are close to Skukuza airport while those concessions in the north of the reserve are closer to Hoedspruit. Sabi Sabi

One of the first private game reserves, Sabi Sabi has developed an enviable reputation for superb game drives with a focus on the protection of the wilderness. All four lodges are part of the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World list, although all are completely different in style and it is possible to change locations after two days. The game viewing is excellent, and the ‘Big Five’ are regularly seen from open Land Cruisers or on walking safaris. The cosmopolitan capital of Natal, Durban, reflects the mix of the local Zulu, the colonisers of Dutch and British descent and the largest population of Indian expats in the world in its culture and cuisine. The city centre contains many excellent examples of Art Deco and Art Nouveau architecture as well as some fine Victorian civil buildings, whilst bustling markets are a reminder of Durban’s diversity.
The rolling hills of KwaZulu-Natal’s interior were for many centuries natural habitats for the ‘Big Five’. As in the rest of the country most of the animals are now confined to private reserves such as Thanda and Nambiti, largely for their own protection. The quality of lodges and rangers is excellent, the temperatures generally more hospitable than in the Eastern Cape and no malaria medication is required.

All children must have their own passports. If you are not a UK passport holder, we suggest you contact the relevant embassies who will advise you of their requirements.
TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN Parents travelling to South Africa with a child (under 18) are required to present the child’s original birth certificate at immigration. When a child is travelling with adults who are not their biological parents, a letter of consent from the parents is required together with copies of the parents’ passports.
SAFETY & SECURITY ABROAD The safety and security of our clients is something we take seriously. Political and social conditions can change and, if for any reason the Foreign Office advises against travel, we would act on this advice accordingly. We are experts at providing alternative solutions that would allow you to have a great holiday away from any problem areas. We ask that all hotels comply with local regulations but these do not always conform to British health and safety standards. Sadly, crimes against people and their property are a fact of life wherever you are so please do be vigilant.
SWIMMING Swimming along much of Southern Africa’s coastline can be dangerous because of strong undercurrents so please take great care. Ensure that you and your children do not enter the water unaccompanied and always seek local advice. Sea bathing in Mauritius tends to be significantly safer, but again, please do seek local advice.
HEALTH & MEDICATION You do not need to take any additional medication if travelling to South Africa unless you are going to Mpamulanga (safari in Kruger National Park), or parts of Kwazulu-Natal or Victoria Falls where you will require malaria tablets. Malaria tablets are also required for Botswana and Zambia.Your doctor, or the Hospital for Tropical Medicines (telephone 020 7388 9600), will be able to provide advice on which tablets to take.
HOLIDAY INSURANCE It is essential that you take out comprehensive holiday insurance.
HOTEL RENOVATIONS All good hotels maintain their properties and bad hotels don’t! Occasionally, some necessary work may be taking place during your stay; whenever possible, we shall advise you prior to your departure.
