FOR DISCERNING TRAVELLERS

4 WATERLOO COURT • 10 THEED STREET • LONDON SE1 8ST Tel: 020 7593 2288 • Fax: 020 4593 1461 • travel@kirkerholidays.com • www.kirkerholidays.com

Many thanks for your interest in our France brochure. If you prefer to speak to an expert travel consultant on the telephone or in person rather than surfing the internet, we would be delighted to help – and very much look forward to hearing from you.Whether you are planning a short break to Paris with restaurants, museum tickets, opera and a private guide booked by the Kirker Concierge, or perhaps a longer tailor-made holiday touring through the châteaux and vineyards of the Loire Valley, our expert consultants will be aiming to exceed your best expectations. The Kirker team has travelled extensively and our first-hand knowledge will help you to create the perfect itinerary combining just the right balance of style, comfort and culture. If you have not recently visited Nice or Marseille in the south, you will find that these cities have been regenerated with new museums and a number of wonderful alfresco cafés and restaurants; Bordeaux and Biarritz are perfect for those who enjoy fine wines and fresh seafood; and less well-known towns such as Lyon or Basque-influenced St. Jean-de-Luz, or ancient Beaune in the heart of Burgundy are all now very much on our list of 'highly recommended' destinations. For those seeking rest and relaxation, we recommend countryside and coastal retreats in settings that range from the wild landscapes of Brittany or the Camargue, to the picture-perfect lavender fields of the Luberon and the idyllic Île de Ré.We feature carefully-selected hotels in the key wine regions including Champagne, Burgundy, Bordeaux and the Loire Valley, and the Kirker Concierge would be delighted to arrange wine-tasting and châteaux visits.Wherever you choose to travel in France you can expect to enjoy exquisite cuisine and world class museums from Lille’s Palais des Beaux Arts in the north, to the villages of the Côte d’Azur in the south – and, of course, Paris, with its collections of some of the finest art and architecture in Europe. France is easily accessible by air, with flights from many regional airports; by Eurotunnel to Calais, or perhaps by ferry in a comfortable cabin to the coast of Brittany and Normandy; or on Eurostar’s fast and efficient service that delivers you to the heart of Paris in 2 hours 15 minutes and Lille in just 80 minutes, as well as Lyon in under 5 hours and just 7 hours to Marseille on the shores of the Mediterranean. With slick TGV trains, travel to all parts on their comprehensive network is comfortable and convenient and you will arrive relaxed having enjoyed pre-booked seats and Kirker transfers to smooth the way. Although we are very proud of our website, it does not include a booking facility as we believe that it is vital that you speak directly to one of our consultants for personal advice about where and when to go, how long to stay for, and which hotel to stay in. Although actually speaking to a human being may be perceived as a more ‘old-fashioned’ way to do business, it is the very best way to book a tailor-made holiday. We launched our first France programme in 1986, but remain as enthusiastic and determined as ever to offer you excellent value for money, and we would relish the opportunity to take responsibility for recommending characterful hotels where we would be happy to stay ourselves. If you do decide to book with Kirker, we can assure you that we shall do our utmost to ensure the smooth running of every aspect of your holiday, before, during and after you travel with us.We very much look forward to hearing from you soon.

KIRKER – HOLIDAYS FOR DISCERNING TRAVELLERS

Kirker tailor-made You may choose to visit two or more destinations in one holiday. Fly into one airport and back from another – why not combine air travel with rail? We thoroughly recommend longer itineraries combining a few days in a city followed by a stay in one of our countryside properties. We take immense pride in creating carefully crafted holidays and although we are not necessarily the cheapest, we do aim to offer exceptional value for money and rely on our clients for repeat business and recommendations for our future success.

Nice, Côte D'Azur

KIRKER HOTELS

Added value

We feature a variety of hotels from grand palaces to majestic châteaux and small characterful countryside retreats. For each hotel description we retain editorial control and are therefore able to provide you with a balanced and unbiased view of each property. To help you choose the hotel best suited to your needs, please telephone 020 7593 2288 and speak to one of our expert consultants who would be delighted to share their first hand experience of the hotels and destinations. If you would like to view photographs of our hotels, please visit our website www.kirkerholidays.com where you will find a number of images for each property. However, please remember that website photographs can sometimes provide a seductive picture that may have been taken through rose-tinted spectacles on a sunny day – speaking to one of our Kirker experts is a better way to help you find the hotel that perfectly suits your needs.

You will find details of special offers at many of our hotels throughout the brochure giving you complimentary nights or room upgrades. We speak to our contacts to negotiate the very best offers and prices every time we receive an enquiry. Paris holidays include a 48 hour pass which gives you complimentary access to over 60 of the city’s museums, monuments and galleries. Holidays to Bordeaux include entrance to the spectacular new Cité du Vin. Holidays to Nice include a 24 hour museum pass including entrance to the Musée Matisse.

Private transfers Our holidays always include transfers by private vehicle on arrival and departure. It is a very civilised and relaxing way to travel between the airport or station and your hotel. No taxi queues, no fare negotiation – just a warm welcome and a smooth journey to your chosen hotel. Holidays to rural destinations tend to include car hire; however, private transfers can always be provided if preferred.

Private tours Whenever you arrive in a new destination for the first time, we recommend a short private walking tour or a tour with a private car if appropriate. Why not ask us to pre-book one of our local guides to meet you in your hotel foyer on your first morning for a two or three hour private excursion?

Kirker guide notes We have prepared some useful Guide Notes giving invaluable information on restaurants, bars, museums, shopping, markets and sightseeing. The Kirker Guide Notes will be sent to you with your travel documentation – please do ask us if you would like a personal restaurant recommendation, our Kirker Concierge would be delighted to book a table on your behalf.

Speak to an expert Our sales team has many years of experience and we make regular visits to the hotels and destinations that we feature. Clients often comment that they have seen a tempting photograph on a hotel’s website but would prefer to speak to someone who knows the property, to find out what it’s really like.

Opera tickets France has many great opera houses offering full and varied programmes – we particularly recommend those in Paris, Nice, Marseille, Lille, Bordeaux and Montpellier. Our Concierge is available to advise you on schedules, prices and availability. Call 020 7593 2286 or email concierge@kirkerholidays.com We will always charge you the price we pay plus a reservation fee of £10 per ticket. Prices will include a local ticket agency handling fee and so will not reflect the face value. Look out for the opera panels throughout the brochure.

kirker concierge We aim to offer a service that is complete from start to finish, whether you would like us to recommend and book a restaurant for a celebration dinner, arrange private guided tours, organise wine-tasting or cookery courses, we will take full responsibility for the smooth running of every aspect of your holiday.

4

Ground arrangements only If you have already booked your own flight tickets, we would be happy to book all other aspects of your holiday, e.g. transfers and hotel accommodation. Prices are quoted immediately and include: breakfast, tax and service at the hotel, plus transfers and Kirker extras such as the Paris Museum Pass.

Fly from your local airport We always try to book flights from your local airport, and, although we recommend flights with scheduled airlines, we can also book seats with ‘no frills’ carriers if you wish.

PRIVATE JETS If you are planning to celebrate a special occasion in style, why not consider taking a small group of friends on a private jet holiday? When compared to full fare scheduled airline tickets the cost is surprisingly inexpensive; you can depart from your local airport, avoid the usual security and immigration queues and travel at the time that suits you. For further details please telephone Ignacio Foley or Dominic Rossi on 020 7593 2283.

LUXURY HOTEL BARGES We introduced a number of Kirker clients to luxury hotel barge holidays during 2016, and were delighted to hear enthusiastic feedback about the comfortable cabins, friendly service on board and of course, the excellent food and wine. For those who have yet to sample the experience – or perhaps those who are looking forward to another opportunity – there are few more relaxing ways to explore rural France. Converted from former working boats, these luxury hotel barges traverse the canals and rivers of the French countryside, with carefully-planned excursions included to local villages, châteaux and vineyards along the route. Guests enjoy excellent cuisine and selected fine wines on board, with a focus on the specialities of the local area and all meals and drinks are included in the price. To work up an appetite for lunch you can take a stroll along the towpaths, or borrow one of the bicycles provided for a morning excursion to the local village boulangerie. DESTINATIONS ●

THE BARGES Each of the barges is different, having been individually restored, but their broad beam means that rooms on board are far more spacious than might be expected on an English narrowboat. There is en-suite accommodation for between 6 and 20 guests, depending on the vessel, and most barges offer alfresco dining on the deck as well as a cosy lounge and dining room.

ITINERARIES In addition to the cruise, your Kirker holiday will also include travel by air or rail to France, transfers to and from the barge, and perhaps a stay at one of our carefully-selected hotels before or after the cruise, to create a hassle-free, relaxing experience from start to finish. We have first-hand experience of a number of barges, so please do speak to one of our experts to create an itinerary tailored to your own personal requirements.

PRIVATE CHARTERS If you have a special occasion to celebrate, or would simply like to take a small group of family or friends away for a relaxing holiday, a private barge charter could be the perfect solution. Exclusive use of a hotel barge means that you not only have the space on board entirely to yourselves, but also have freedom to plan the itinerary around your own personal preferences. The full programme of excursions and visits can be customised to suit your own requirements, and the on-board chef will prepare menus to your personal taste using the finest local ingredients. Follow a winetasting route through Alsace or Burgundy, a culinary experience through Bordeaux and Gascony or perhaps a golfing week in Scotland or Ireland. We can highly recommend a private charter for a landmark birthday or anniversary.

Burgundy: Six different barges cruise the waterways of France’s gastronomic heart, where you will pass through lush pastures, ancient forests and wine regions of Chablis, Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, enjoying some of the finest cuisine in the country. Canal du Midi: Follow in the footsteps of Rick Stein on the 300 year old UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Canal du Midi, which winds beneath ancient plane trees between Cathar castles such as Carcassonne, Languedoc vineyards and the foothills of the Pyrenees. Loire Valley: The River Loire has been an important thoroughfare for two millennia and the surrounding region is famous for not only its splendid Renaissance chateaux, but also for the vineyards of Sancerre, Epoisses cheese and Gustave Eiffel’s majestic ‘Pont Canal’ aqueduct. Champagne: Perhaps the world’s most famous wine region, the vineyards around Épernay and Reims are the focus for journeys on the River Marne, but passengers will also enjoy cheeses from Meaux and Coulommiers and visit the Gothic cathedral of Reims. Alsace & Lorraine: The missing link between France and Germany, Alsace combines French flair with traditional Germanic architecture. Highlights include Strasbourg cathedral, the unique Arzviller boat elevator, and tastings of Gewurztraminer and Riesling wines. Gascony & Bordeaux: The south west of France is an oenophile’s paradise, with some of the most renowned wine regions in France alongside untouched countryside dotted with magnificent chateaux and picturesque medieval villages.

As well as the regions of France, we also feature journeys in northern Italy between Venice and Mantua; in the flower-fields of Holland; through Scotland’s Great Glen; and from Limerick to Athlone in Ireland.

RECOMMENDED ITINERARY Our range of itineraries on board luxury hotel barges includes journeys on rivers and canals throughout France, but one of our favourite routes is on board ‘L’Art de Vivre’, which includes medieval Auxerre with its magnificent cathedral, wine-tasting at a Chablis vineyard, and delicious Burgundian cuisine served on board. Prices start from £3,898 for an eight night holiday, including Eurostar or flights to Paris, two nights in a Kirker hotel in Paris and six nights on board the hotel barge with all transfers, meals and drinks.

A Kirker Short Break to Monaco represents excellent value for money, particularly in the winter when you can enjoy the famously mild climate – the Riviera has 300 days of sunshine a year. Our holidays to Monaco include complimentary entrance to a wide range of museums and attractions.
