Thank you for your interest in our holidays to Spain and Portugal, we very much hope that this brochure inspires you to visit the Iberian peninsula and whether you wish to explore a new region or revisit a favourite city, we firmly believe that the best way to arrange the perfect tailor-made holiday is to speak on the telephone or in person to an expert consultant. There is perhaps no other part of the world which offers such a perfect mix of warm sunshine, dynamic cities, delicious cuisine and fine wines as well as great art, architecture and history, to create the perfect destination for a revitalising short break. Our expert team would be delighted to share their in-depth knowledge of not only the magnificent cities of Seville, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon and Oporto, but also offer an insight into the fascinating smaller towns, including Toledo, Segovia and Coimbra, and both countries’ astonishing variety of rural and coastal regions. As anyone who has visited the region will tell you, Spanish and Portuguese hospitality is legendary with the next delicious glass of ‘fino,’ 'porto' or 'madeira' never too far away – as well as the fine wines of La Rioja and the Ribera del Duero.The Kirker Concierge will guide you to the best tapas and pintxos bars and our favourite restaurants where you can enjoy alfresco fine dining or perhaps relax over a plate of fresh grilled sardines with a glass of chilled Albariño wine. Few countries offer such a wealth of great art and culture – from world-renowned galleries such as the Prado in Madrid and the Gulbenkian in Lisbon, to newer museums including Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim in Bilbao and the Pompidou Centre in Málaga – as well as music, opera, gardens and architecture; all of which are perfect ingredients for a great short break. As well as the art of El Greco, Goya, Gaudi, Dali, Miró, Picasso, Sorolla and Velazquez, the region offers visitors a wonderful blend of classical and contemporary architecture – from the ornate palaces in Sintra to Gaudi’s iconic masterpieces in Barcelona and Calatrava’s striking City of Arts & Sciences in Valencia.We suggest you book one of our expert local guides for a private walking tour; just ask the Kirker Concierge for details at the time of booking. For those who have already visited the major cities, our team would be delighted to share some of their favourite offthe-beaten-path destinations: perhaps Santiago de Compostela, or the proud Basque Country in the north, the vineyards of the Douro Valley on the west coast or the Moorish towns of the south. And for year-round sunshine and unspoilt landscapes, don’t forget the islands of Mallorca,Tenerife and Madeira, where we can recommend charming hotels in the best locations. To make the most of your time, we highly recommend a tailor-made itinerary which combines two or more destinations – perhaps with a journey on the high-speed AVE trains which link Madrid with Seville and Barcelona in only two and a half hours – or the slick intercity service between Lisbon and Oporto. All our holidays include private car transfers, but for those on longer itineraries, we can arrange car hire and would certainly recommend this if you plan to visit smaller towns and rural areas, such as Castille & León with its UNESCO World Heritage cities of Toledo, Segovia with its vast Roman aqueduct, and Avila, still surrounded by intact medieval walls.We also highly recommend the charming Paradors and Pousadas throughout the region, many of which are housed in magnificent historic buildings in prominent positions. There has never been a better time to visit the Iberian peninsula, so please don’t hesitate to contact us. If you do decide to book with Kirker, we shall do our utmost to ensure the smooth running of every aspect of your holiday: before, during and after your return. We very much look forward to hearing from you.

Kirker tailor-made Madrid

KIRKER HOTELS We feature some wonderful properties covering a range of styles, from small, family-run riads to the finest luxury hotels. For each hotel description we retain editorial control and are therefore able to provide you with a balanced and unbiased view of each property. To help you choose the hotel best suited to your needs, please telephone 020 7593 2288 and speak to one of our expert consultants who would be delighted to share their first hand experience of the hotels and destinations. If you would like to view photographs of our hotels, please visit our website, www.kirkerholidays.com where you will find a number of images for each property. However, please remember that website photographs can sometimes provide a seductive picture that may have been taken through rose-tinted spectacles on a sunny day – speaking to one of our Kirker experts is a better way to help you find the hotel that perfectly suits your needs and expectations.

You may choose to visit two or more destinations in one holiday. Fly into one airport and back from another – why not include a mixture of air travel with rail? Our experienced tailor-made department can help you to get the most out of your holiday. We thoroughly recommend longer itineraries combining a few days in a city followed by three or four nights relaxing in one of our countryside or coastal properties. We take immense pride in creating carefully crafted holidays, and although we are not necessarily the cheapest, we do aim to offer exceptional overall value for money and rely on our clients for repeat business and recommendations for our future success.

Kirker guide notes We are proud of our knowledge of the destinations we feature and have prepared some useful Guide Notes giving invaluable information on restaurants, bars, museums, shopping, markets and sightseeing. The Kirker Guide Notes will be sent to you with your travel documentation – please do ask us if you would like a personal restaurant recommendation, our Kirker Concierge would be delighted to book a table on your behalf.

Private transfers Our holidays include private transfers on arrival and on departure – instantly removing the anxiety that many experience when arriving in an unfamiliar destination. No taxis, no fare negotiation – just a warm welcome and a smooth journey to your chosen hotel. Certain holidays to rural destinations include hire car, however, private transfers can always be provided if preferred.

kirker concierge We aim to offer a service that is complete from start to finish, whether you would like us to recommend and book a restaurant for a celebration dinner, arrange private guided tours, organise wine-tasting or cookery courses, we will take full responsibility for the smooth running of every aspect of your holiday.

Speak to an expert Our sales team has many years of experience and we make regular visits to the hotels that we feature. Clients often comment that they have seen a tempting photograph on a hotel’s website but would prefer to speak to someone who knows the property because they need to find out what it is really like.

Private tours Whenever you arrive in a new destination for the first time, we recommend a short private walking tour or a tour with a private car if appropriate. Why not ask us to pre-book one of our local guides to meet you in your hotel foyer on your first morning for a two or three hour private excursion?

Fly from your local airport We always try to book flights from your local airport, and, although we recommend flights with scheduled airlines, we can also book seats with ‘no frills’ carriers if you wish.

Ground arrangements only If you have already booked your own flight tickets we would be happy to book all other aspects of your holiday, e.g. transfers and hotel accommodation. Prices include breakfast, tax and service at the hotel, plus transfers and Kirker extras.

Opera & concerts

private jets

We charge you the price we pay plus £10 per ticket. Telephone 020 7593 2286 or email concierge@kirkerholidays.com

If you are planning to celebrate a special occasion in style, why not consider taking a small group of friends on a private jet holiday? When compared to full fare scheduled airline tickets the cost is surprisingly inexpensive; you can depart from your local airport, avoid the usual security and immigration queues and travel at the time that suits you. TENERIFE & LA GOMERA TENERIFE This beautiful, sunny island with its unspoilt volcanic desert interior and mountainous scenery is the perfect destination for those who seek warm sunshine and a perfect climate, combined with comfortable hotels and some wonderful walking through the most fascinating of landscapes. As Spain’s most outlying island,Tenerife has a reputation for more mass market tourism – and you will find this concentrated around the south of the island. However, what most people don’t appreciate is that the island is largely unspoilt with a beautiful landscape, unique and fascinating flora, and spectacular views. As well as the main island of Tenerife, there are a number of smaller islands which are perfectly suited to those who seek a tranquil location, either for an overnight stop or as a day trip excursion.

Close to Lisbon and within very easy reach by a fast train service, Cascais is a glamorous resort yet still has the feel of a traditional Portuguese fishing village. Also close by is the elegant hill town of Sintra with its magnificent palaces and gardens. Oporto, with its famous port lodges is the gateway to the beautiful Douro Valley and is well worth visiting. Here visitors find a dramatic volcanic landscape and wonderful gardens to keep even the keenest plant lover happy.

TAILOR-MADE HOLIDAYS Its compact size lends Portugal perfectly to tailor-made itineraries combining two or more destinations in one holiday. There are regular international flights into Lisbon, as well as into Oporto in the north and Faro – gateway to the Algarve – in the south, and local trains link all three cities. Those wishing to explore further off the beaten track will enjoy driving, discovering the historic centre of Portugal including the university city of Coimbra. Speak to a Kirker expert for advice and perhaps stay in one of the ‘Pousadas’ – comfortable and characterful hotels, often in historic buildings. For those who prefer not to drive, we can arrange for a car and driver to whisk you between destinations and don’t forget to speak to the Kirker Concierge to arrange a morning in the company of one of our expert local guides, a visit to a port lodge and a wine-tasting, or advice on the best local restaurants. We offer complete flexibility so please call us to discuss your personal requirements.
