Junior, Infant and Pre-School Newsletter Issue 11 Friday 27 April 2018 Dear Parents It has been lovely to see everyone return refreshed after the Easter break. I am delighted to report that we are well and truly back in the swing of things and everyone is keen to make the most of their lessons. It has been wonderful to return in bright sunshine (albeit for only three days!) for what promises to be a very enjoyable term. You will have seen from the school calendar that there is plenty ahead to challenge the children and extra-curricular activities are well underway. Already, our annual Charity Triathlon has taken place to raise money for Brian House Children’s Hospice, more details of which you can read about later in this newsletter, as well as a very successful Coffee Concert that took place yesterday in the Old Hall. Over the Easter Holidays, we took a group of forty eight children on a ski trip to Austria and a wonderful time was had by all. The children were a credit to the school and came back having learned so much about themselves, as well as improving their skiing technique. This week we have spoken to all the children about the importance of looking smart. Your support is very much appreciated and we would ask that all parents ensure that their children come to school dressed appropriately. Thank you so much for your valued support. Our school is a vibrant place to be and your children are a real credit to you. We are not able to get everything right all of the time but we can assure you that we will always work tirelessly to secure the very best for our children. I hope you all have a lovely weekend. The writing adventure in Pre-School began when the children heard ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ story. An exciting discussion arose as they were asked to think about different types of foods caterpillars might eat. All kinds of amazing words came up in conversation and a guided writing session led into the creation of a fabulous story, ‘The Caterpillar Who Ate Lots of Food’. All areas of learning were brought together and the children drew parts of the story, chatted about the different types of food and painted the imaginary animal that came out of the cocoon. PE times have also been great learning opportunities and moments to learn about each other’s social and emotional well-being. It was so much fun to exercise with friends! Well done, Pre-School!
The I3 children have been learning about poetry. Last week, they went outside in the sunshine to look for signs of spring to use in their own poems.
We are looking forward to seeing your 'Spring' poems, I3!
The KGJS 2018 ski trip to Zell Am See over the Easter holiday was extremely successful. From drop off to pick up it was a superb trip and full of amazing memories. From the beginners to the high advanced, everyone tried their best and showed a great example of determination. Every evening there was an enjoyable activity to do like swimming at the Tauren Spa, a disco, eating out, ice hockey and lots more. Most days we skied on the mountain by the resort but for two days we travelled to the Glacier where there was an ice bar, fluffy snow and stunning views which was a highlight of the week. What made the trip even better was the excellent behaviour and attitude from all the children. The early morning get ups were a struggle for some but everyone still powered through the day and had loads of fun skiing. Thank you to all the parents for letting us go on this trip and to the staff for taking it the extra mile for us. Finally, we would like to thank TGM for arranging this trip and for making it a once in a lifetime experience. By Grace Livesey and Alexa Anderson
On Wednesday 18 April, J1 made healthy, gluten -free pizzas from scratch for their DT ‘Pizza Project’. They began by making and kneading their dough which was a great deal of sticky fun! Next, they moulded their dough into their chosen shape. Finally, they finished by adding their chosen healthy ingredients, which they put into their beautifully designed pizza boxes. Not only did the children learn about healthy eating, but they also had a great deal of fun!
There is a wonderful ‘Great Fire of London’ display in the I3Y classroom. Please do pop in to have a look at the end of the school day! Well done, I3! You have all worked very hard on this topic!
During their Science lesson, the J1 children have been looking at the sugar quantity in a variety of foods. They were particularly shocked to find out how much sugar was in a Mars Bar!
Well done with your investigations, J1!
A number of J4 children have been attending Lancashire Junior Hockey Squad U13 training sessions over the winter months. Recently, Harvey Barber, Teddy Bowker, Harry Case, Bruno Bowker, James Shuttleworth, Georgia Nicholls, Lilly Jones, Claudia Allison and Evie Mellon were selected to represent Lancashire against other regional development squads such as Cumbria, East Cheshire, West Cheshire and Greater Manchester. Well done to you all!
Can you work out where this photo was taken within the KGJS building?

On Saturday 14 April, our annual Charity Triathlon took place to raise money for Brian House Children’s Hospice. It started at YMCA Rural Splash where we were all sorted into groups and completed a 10 length swim. Next, we travelled to UCLAN Sports Arena to run one mile and then cycle for three miles. When everybody had completed the triathlon there was a medal presentation by Mrs Roberts. Thank you to all the parents who came to support us and to Mr Oddie for organizing such an amazing event. It was a great experience for pupils and staff. In total we hope to raise over £1000. What a great day! We can’t wait for Triathlon 2019! By George Godbold and Brooke Medhurst
On Friday 20 April, the Annual Junior School House Swimming Gala took place at Kirkham Baths. Every pupil in J1, 2, 3 and 4 was selected to swim and there were fifty races in total. Yesterday, nineteen J3 and J4 pupils performed in front of their parents at a Coffee Concert in the stunning surroundings of the Old Hall. The children dazzled the audience with their singing, drama and instrumental performances while the parents enjoyed coffee and a delicious selection of pastries. Well done to all the children who took part. A short movie of the event is now available to view via our KGS Facebook and Twitter page.
