Kirkham Grammar School Junior, Infant and Pre-School Issue 13 Friday 13 May 2016 Dear Parents Finally, the weather has improved and, as we look forward to tomorrow, I only hope that the sun shines upon us for our Mad Hatters Tea Party! I am indebted to the Friends of Kirkham Grammar School for their hard work in organising this event and I do encourage you to come along and support. There will be lots on offer for everyone, both young and old! Last week we had a visit from Mr Adrian Boyer, Head of Silcoates School, who spent the day with us to observe the teaching and learning within the school and to talk to the children. I am delighted to report that his feedback on both the teaching and learning and the school generally was extremely positive. Our J3 children have visited Waddow Hall in Clitheroe this week and, looking at the photographs, it is evident that they had a wonderful time. The J4 children have much to look forward to over the coming weeks and I am delighted to have witnessed their engagement and commitment in the classroom, which has resulted in some wonderful academic work. Thursday morning saw the introduction of a House Assembly led by the House Captains, the purpose of which was to discuss a new venture - a House Singing Competition which will replace the House Music and Drama Competition. All Junior children will be involved and there was much discussion around the choice of song. Staff are also allocated a House and will be taking part, however Mr Lockett and Mrs Shuttleworth are banned from the process!!!! I look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow at the Spring Fair. On Tuesday 10 May, Siân Percival-Edwards from Heartbeat came into school to run a variety of workshops throughout the day for all classes. These covered First Aid skills, Understanding Food, Healthy Hearts and ‘What’s in my Drink?’. All the children found these workshops incredibly interesting as well as valuable and we thank Lytham Lions of St Anne's for their very kind sponsorship.

On Saturday 7 May, thirty three children along with Ms Baxter, Mrs Aldeen, Mrs Tickle and Mr Butterworth, took part in a Charity Triathlon. The event was held at Kirkham baths for swimming and Preston Sports Arena for running and cycling. When we arrived at Kirkham baths we all swam 10 lengths of the pool, with most of us choosing different styles for each length. As well as the traditional strokes, we also swam backwards and somersaulted our way down the pool! We had so much fun. Next we travelled to Preston Sports Arena to do both the running and the cycling. We thought the hardest part was the running. We ran round the track four times to complete one mile then we jumped on our bikes for the three miles of cycling. Everyone tried their best and cheered on those who were struggling more that others. This showed great sportsmanship and team effort. Thank you to our sports teachers for organising the Charity Triathlon and all the parents who came to support. by Heidi Aldeen and Jessica Cole
Would you believe it is possible to create your very own creature? It all began when we started reading stories about aliens and found out that aliens are all different. After making our very own alien, we chose to look at interesting creatures. It has been fascinating so far!!! We are looking at how different insects live and are slowly discovering that in our imaginary world, cats can have wings and ladybirds can be pink. So many more exciting things yet to learn! We also had a visitor this week. Grandad Brian, Harry Case’s grandad, came in to tell us how he learned to make furniture with his own grandad and how special the time they spent together was for him. He looked around our Pre-School and began planning how to use his magic fingers. Something magical is going to happen soon, so watch this space!!

J1 organised and ran a chocolate tombola to raise money for Classrooms in the Clouds on Friday 6 May. It was a huge success with all of the tickets being sold. J1 children even kindly donated the money that they still had left. They raised £138.82 and would like to thank everyone who bought raffle tickets and to all the parents who donated chocolate. Well done J1!

On Friday 6 May, the J3X pupils really brought the Ancient Greeks alive during their assembly, with both super performances and excellent costumes. A huge thank you to all the parents for helping out with this! The children really enjoyed themselves and there was a lovely buzz in the classroom afterwards! They were all very keen to talk about their assembly! Glenn said, “I really liked the music and the singing," while Owain added, “I was King Zeus and I enjoyed throwing lightning down from Mount Olympus.” Rachel commented, “I thought Pippa was super as she bounced into the hall as Athena.” Pippa remarked, “I found the assembly great as it had a lot of comedy in it and it was fun to be a part of. Austin and Samuel were so funny in their performances.” Gabby said, “I liked the Mexican wave because the whole school took part.” Well done to J3X for an ‘epic’ assembly!
I3 had a surprise visitor in class this morning, when Ranvir Singh, freelance journalist and TV presenter, popped in to see them. During the visit, Ranvir read some of their alien stories and chatted to the children about their writing. Thank you to Ranvir for spending time with us.
On Thursday 12 May, on a gorgeous sunny afternoon, KGJS U11 girls travelled to Lancaster to play Rounders against Lancaster Girls Grammar School U12s. They had three very close games with the final results as follows: Dani’s team lost 10-9 Eve’s team won 14-12 Tabitha’s team lost 8-7
The J3s had an excellent day at Waddow Hall on Wednesday 11 May. The main focus of their visit was to reinforce and extend their friendships and work on their team building skills. The children were split into three groups and then headed off to complete their tasks. They had fun being blindfolded before being led around the ‘Nightline’ course. Here they had to follow a sighted leader who guided them through the woods with a variety of obstacles and trip hazards to negotiate. The ‘Rabbit Warren’ challenged those afraid of small, dark spaces and, with the help of their peers, were able to overcome their fears. At lunch, they whizzed down the hill on grass sledges and then finally they completed ‘Team Games and Team Building’ activities. A great time was had by all and the weather was perfect for us! Many thanks to the adults who came along and helped.
I1 enjoyed another visit from Mr Hall (James’s dad) who came to KGJS in the Autumn Term with his tractor. Yesterday, he brought two four week old brown and white calves for us to see. Everyone had previously prepared a question to ask Mr Hall, and we were very keen to learn more about the calves, ’Red Hannah’ and ‘Red Sally’, and also about life on the farm! We were very interested to look at their markings, and learnt that they are twins! Mr Hall thought our questions were very good, including one about how cows and calves sleep. He thinks that they ‘doze’ rather than fall into a deep sleep! Thank you very much Mr Hall for giving up your valuable time to bring such special visitors to see us, and for once again m a k i n g our learning so much fun!
This morning during our whole school assembly, I1 retold the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. They all spoke very clearly and the singing was super! Well done I1 you were all amazing and looked fantastic!
