CREATE. LEARN. CONNECT.

See you in Bellevue!

Kirkland Arts Center is expanding. While our home will always be the Peter Kirk Building in Kirkland, we are working hard to increase access to classes throughout the Eastside. Kirkland Arts Center has formed a new partnership with the City of Bellevue to offer adult, youth, and afterschool classes in Clyde Hill. We’re starting with three adult classes in Clyde Hill – you can find these new offerings in beginning ceramics and watercolor in this catalog with this icon: BELLEVUE New afterschool classes for grades 3 – 5 will be offered throughout the academic year in Clyde Hill – students can be bussed from their school in Bellevue to attend. Registration will be through the City of Bellevue’s community programming website. In addition to expanding our footprint geographically, we are also working hard to increase access to all who want to learn art. Scholarships for all classes are available through an application demonstrating need. If you would like to support our initiative to increase access, please consider attending Kirkland Arts Center’s Gala & Auction, Through the Looking Glass, on October 20th. One of the most fun parties of the year on the Eastside, Kirkland Arts Center’s Gala will be held at the W Hotel in Bellevue, with costumes, entertainment, and incredible art. Art access for all, and all for access to art!

Singapore… and I am so grateful for that! My husband is a new addition to my support team now!

HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT MOVING TO SINGAPORE TO STUDY ART?

LALITHA BANDARU INTERVIEW Born in 1992 in India, Lalitha graduated with a Master degrees in Fine Arts from Chelsea College of Art, London, and got her Bachelors from Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore, both with honours. Since very young she has been passionate about being an artist and also giving something back to the field of art education. She had her first solo show when she was just 17 and has had shows in India, Singapore, and London since then. Apart from being a faculty at Kirkland Arts Center, Lalitha also works at the John Grade Studio and continues to pursue her artistic journey from her studio at home.

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? WHAT WAS YOUR FAMILY LIKE? HOW DID THEY FEEL ABOUT YOU PURSUING ART? I was born and brought up in India. I grew up in a fairly large family consisting of an older brother, parents, grandparents. Even as a toddler, I was always seen with a crayon and a piece of paper. My grandfather recognised my passion and treasured every one of those drawings. My mother was especially supportive, nurturing and encouraging… providing the perfect environment for me to pursue my love for art. Growing up, I was really good at math and physics and even topped my class in 10th and 12th Grade. Everyone I knew wanted me to pursue engineering and felt that art wasn’t even an option. My mother stood by me, and we took the leap! She sent me to one of the best schools for art for my undergrad in

10

I was just 18 when I went to Singapore to study. Since the art school there was affiliated to Goldsmiths College, London, it was quite contemporary and had the perfect international exposure. The extremely talented peer group and the art scene were big influences. It was during that time, that I had started to rethink my approach to art making and to experiment with various other materials … and my work started to become a lot more sculptural. Even though my study in Singapore had a great influence on both my thought process and work, my study in London was quite an experience. There were galleries in every street.. showcasing works of artists that I had admired or read about. It was just amazing! With all that exposure... I ended up participating in multiple group shows, experimental and collaborative projects too. I extremely enjoyed both the experiences!

WHAT GETS YOU UP IN THE MORNING? WHAT EXCITES OR INSPIRES YOU? The smell of paint and any new thoughts keep me excited! I keep taking inspiration from the happenings around me. Nature and its ever-changing quality, land and the unsettling relationship it has with architecture are two concepts that I keep revisiting in my practice. I am constantly trying to capture these transitory ‘shifts’ in my work.

DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM PROJECT--BIG, PIE-IN-THE-SKY, NO LIMITATIONS. I would like to create an artwork that is at a massive scale but is derived from the simplest and the most innate thought -- a timeless piece of work

WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE? Art practice is not just about conveying a message to the world but it is also a journey that gives you hints about yourself so, be open, embrace every step and don’t be afraid to explore the most naive thoughts!

KIRKLAND ARTS CENTER GALLERY EXHIBITIONS

APPARITIONS KAC GALLERY

GALLERY HOURS Tuesday – Friday 11 AM – 6 PM Saturday 11 AM – 5 PM Closed Sundays and Mondays

OCTOBER 2 – NOVEMBER 21 OPENING RECEPTION 6PM ON OCTOBER 5

Apparitions brings together an international selection of artists working around the idea of spirits. Taking a broad view of the subject, the exhibition will examine the role of spirits as manifestations of cultural and personal belief systems within the context of contemporary society. The spectrum of work moves from more light hearted appropriations of the undead as seen through the lens of popular culture to powerful meditations on the threshold between presence and absence. Apparitions runs concurrently with Spellbound, which will be installed in the project space portion of the gallery. In her curatorial debut, curator Geneva Baldauf, explores imagery and ideas around witchcraft in western culture. Featuring nationally recognized artists, Spellbound addresses historical notions of the witch as a means of redefining contemporary practitioners. The Kirkland Arts Center Gallery supports local artists and curators by providing a space for engaging exhibitions. These shows inspire art appreciation and creativity in the Kirkland arts community. The KAC Gallery is free and open to the public, including our opening receptions.
