Wings with live score
The Songs of War
We mark the centenary of both the end of World War I and the formation of the Royal Air Force with a special screening of the 1927 silent film, Wings, with Carl Davis’ 1993 live score performed in sync with the movie. The winner of the first Academy Award for Best Picture in 1929, Wings is a romantic action picture written and directed by combat pilots John Monk Saunders and William Wellman. In a small town in America, rivals Jack and David both vie for the affections of Sylvia Lewis. As romance starts to blossom, both men are called up to enlist and the pandemonium of war threatens to tear the lovers apart. Music by Carl Davis.
Former Music Director of Opera North, Richard Farnes returns to the helm of the Orchestra to present the world premiere of Will Todd’s Songs of Love and Battle. Dedicated to Opera North’s youth ensembles, Todd’s commission is a micro opera depicting the conflicting emotions of war through the words and poems of Maggie Gottlieb. Renowned for their melodic intensity and harmonic invention, Todd’s best-known works include Mass in Blue, The Blackened Man and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Scottish landscapes have captured the imaginations of composers throughout Europe for centuries. Based on folk melodies from across the border, and one from poet Robert Burns, Arnold’s 12 Four Scottish Dances feature clever imitations of bagpipes – an instrument synonymous with Scotland and a fitting way to herald the start of the concert. With its unmistakable Scottish flair, Debussy’s March Écossaise is filled with pastoral variations building to a dramatic conclusion; and a twilight visit to the ruins of Holyrood Chapel was the spark for Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3.

To mark 50 years since their first “panto”, for Dewsbury Collegians there is just one show. So “Cinderella” it has to be, the one the families love to see. Full of characters so well known, buttons setting the comedy tone. The Ugly Sisters doing their worst, aren’t we glad to see their bubble burst. The Handsome Prince provides romance, for Fairy Godmother to enhance. Don’t we all cherish that special bit, when the Glass Slipper is found to fit.
