Founded as an independed village in 1816, Old North St. Louis joined St. Louis City in 1841. Home to Crown Candy Kitchen and the 14th Street Mall (a development project spearheaded by the Old North Restoration Group), Old North St. Louis is a slowly recouperating neighborhood and historic district.

COLUMBUS SQUARE Originally the immigrant neighborhood of St. Patrick’s Parish, the German immigrant neighborhood of Columbus Square deteriorated to slum status in the 1870’s. After the demolotion of the tenament houses in its bounds, the neighborhood became home to many public housing projects such as Cochran Garden’s (1954) and the Columbus Square Townhomes (1987).
