Wiltshire & Swindon Sport, Guidance on Coaches Coaches working in Schools
www.rightcoach.org.uk
The announcement of additional funding for primary school sport from September 2013 has focused the attention on schools and coaches to the delivery of sport in schools. To help support schools with regards to;
recruiting and deploying suitably qualified coaches,
quality assuring the work of sports coaches and instructors employed to coach in PE lessons and after-school sports clubs,
training existing members of staff to ensure the funding brings the maximum benefits for all pupils, WASP highly recommend that those delivering sport and physical activity in schools are registered on the counties online Coach Database ‘RightCoach’ and adhere to specific Minimum Standards for Deployment.
Minimum Standards for Deployment Qualified coaches want to deliver positive coaching experiences to participants and Minimum Standards for Deployment underpin this. Providing fun, safe and effective coaching sessions will enable participants to enjoy being physically active, develop themselves and reach their potential within their chosen sport. The Minimum Standards for Deployment require all coaches to meet the following: Minimum Standard for Deployment Agreed minimum age Appropriate Qualifications
Appropriate Insurance
Safeguarding & Protecting Children Workshop
Welfare Safety Checks 1st Aid Qualification
Multi-Skills / FUNdamentals Qualification
Criteria Lead Coach or independent deliverer: 18+ years Assistant Coach: 16+ years Lead Coach or independent deliverer: UKCC / NGB Level 2 or above unless otherwise stated by the NGB Assistant Coach: UKCC Level 1 Coaches should have an insurance policy that covers the coach for the duties to be undertaken, this ensures both the coaches and participants are covered. Lead Coach & Assistant Coach : Disclosure & Barring Service Check (previously CRB) This workshop teaches participants how to respond to lifethreatening emergencies. Focusing on primary care through a combination of knowledge development, skill development and realistic scenario practice to make sure participants have the confidence in their ability to provide care when Emergency situations arise. This practical workshop explores the concepts of Agility, Balance and Co-ordination. It will help coaches to observe, analyse and coach good movement patterns within their sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions
www.rightcoach.org.uk
What does it mean when a coach has a Level 1 Coaching Qualification? In most sports, Level 1 qualifications are assistant coach qualifications. They qualify the individual to coach sessions in their particular sport which will take place under the supervision of a Level 2 coach or qualified teacher. They cannot coach alone. During a Level 1 course a candidate will learn how to organise small sided conditioned games (where appropriate), gain a very basic understanding of coaching points around sports specific skills, examine different styles of learning and how to set up and adapt sports specific activities and skills. What does it mean when a coach has a Level 2 Coaching Qualification? Level 2 qualifications qualify the candidate to prepare, deliver and review coaching sessions, without the supervision of another coach. During their training the candidate will develop greater depth and understanding of the above as well as covering skill development in detail, learning styles, how to use questioning and give feedback to children and adults, how to use demonstrations appropriately and how to most effectively observe and analyse those that are being coached. A level 2 course lasts between 30 – 100 hours. If a coach has a level 1 or 2 coaching qualification can they coach any sport to that level? No. Each qualification is specific to that sport and therefore only qualifies the coach in the sport that the qualification is in. Can I only employ coaches who meet the minimum standards for deployment? No, the minimum standards for deployment are recommendations to ensure all pupils experience the maximum benefits from coaching sessions. We are also able to use the coach database to help find the Right Coach for you. We have over 1000 coaches registered delivering in over 100 different sports and activities.
For further information and to ensure the coaches you are employing meet Minimum Standards for Deployment. Please contact Dominique@wiltssport.org or call 07917030946.

How Right Coach helped - Terry Bathe
www.rightcoach.org.uk
My Name is Terry Bathe and I have 6 years coaching experience. I have coached in many various locations, coaching people ranging from 2 to 45 years old. I found out about RightCoach in late 2011, whilst at a sports development meeting with Wiltshire Council. I met with Dominique Oughton at WASP in early 2012 to start my registration process. Dominique was really supportive throughout this stage, making sure I met the necessary minimum standards for deployment. I was deployed by RightCoach in March 2012. The registration process was really simple and was made even easier by Dominique’s support. Since being deployed, I have received many coaching and work opportunities from RightCoach through their mailing list. Their circulation of course information, details of sports events happening in the South West and potential coaching opportunities is fantastic. It has enabled me to expand my working hours and also create links with other local coaches and organisations, helping to further my coaching knowledge and experience. I have also attended many courses since joining RightCoach, helping me to support our coaching team’s development. Receiving the information about job opportunities through the RightCoach Newsletter, direct emails, Facebook and Twitter makes coaching opportunities more accessible. Having a RightCoach Deployment ID badge makes things a lot easier when visiting a school or leisure venue for the first time. Because you have your DBS number on the front and all your qualifications listed on the back, you can be quickly verified by a member of staff, saving taking in a lot of paperwork. Having the card gives you more credibility within this environment and shows schools that having specialist sports coaches delivering sessions raises standards and makes for more affective delivery to their students.

I am very privileged and honoured to currently coach the England Netball
National Squad, currently 3rd in the World, and a side which is continuing to build momentum to our ultimate goals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, as part of the 'WE are England' team, and World Championships in 2015. I am also fortunate to be part of UKSport elite coaching programme, a bespoke coach development programme that challenges me to be the best I can be, in order to build a World Class team in the sport of netball. Astonishingly, stats show that 33% of our nations coaches are women and even less (9%) within the elite side of coaching funding are female. I truly believe that because this is the case, as a female
national coach in sport, it is one of my duties to be a good role model to other females, to encourage, support and inspire them to coach and participate within sport. I was lucky to have experienced coaches who were great people, who cared and nurtured the person first, the athlete second and the sport third. They made it both fun and challenging, as well as embracing and celebrating difference while valuing everyone's contribution however great or small! You too, could inspire and motivate someone to participate in the sport you love, so get involved!!
I'm currently a RFU Community Rugby Coach based in Swindon working
with clubs, schools and colleges. I became involved initially by playing the sport, however when I was 16 I decided I needed to give something back therefore I completed my level 1 and helped out at my local club. I found out I loved coaching and it was something I wanted a career in, seeing people improve and have fun was beyond satisfying and highly motivating. I then progressed onto my level 2 which enabled me to take on this role, I love getting up in the morning to do my job! Everyday is different and I'm always learning something new.

Volunteer to Coach - Ashleigh Brennan’s Story My name is Ashleigh Brennan and I am 17 years old. I swim with my local swimming club Trowbridge ASC. I first became involved in coaching through the Young Volunteer Programme, a programme devised to allow young people to experience the different roles within a swimming club besides participating as a swimmer. I wanted to take part in the programme to see how everything worked behind the scenes and I wanted to give something back to my club by becoming a regular volunteer. I also hoped to gain new skills and work with new people in the club. Through the Young Volunteer Programme I had lots of opportunities. I started teaching with my club assisting with the learn to swim programme which I thoroughly enjoyed and still continue to do so today. I also attended several courses such as Judge Level 1, Team Managers Award and The Organisers Award. Taking part in these courses gave me new knowledge and new qualifications. As part of my Young Volunteers Programme I had to organise an event, I chose to run a mini gala for the learn to swim programme as at the time, they didn’t have an opportunity to compete. After helping coach, as well as volunteering in other roles, I chose to complete my Level 1 Teaching Aquatics qualification, I found through volunteering that I really enjoyed coaching and I wanted to progress and improve my knowledge and skills. Completing my Level 1 qualification also helped me gain confidence when it came to teaching swimming and it gave me the opportunity to be able to take a small group of children or assist a Level 2 swim teacher. I learnt how to correct technique and also improved my own performance. Completing my Level 1 also helped me get a job as a swim assistant at my local leisure centre. Later that year I also received a Highly Commended Award for Young Volunteer of the Year at The Wiltshire and Swindon Awards. My swimming club found out about the WASP Mentoring Scheme and suggested that it would be a good opportunity for me. I hoped to gain more confidence teaching large groups on my own and learn new drills and techniques to help me improve my knowledge so that I can help my swimmers improve. I was allocated a Mentor who was a Level 3 coach I really enjoyed my time working with her and the young children and adults we taught together. Before the scheme, I had not had much experience working with adults and I found this really rewarding. I received immediate feedback and encouragement which helped me grow in confidence over the 6 sessions. It was great being able to have the support of a more experienced coach on a 1 to 1 basis. With funding support from WASP I then went on to successfully completed my Level 2 Teaching Aquatics Qualification. On my course I was given a group of 7-8 children for a week and had to teach them by myself. I learnt lots of new games to use with the swimmers and how to teach in a fun and interesting way. This helped me to build up lots of resources and ideas to use for my own coaching and helped me to write sessions that progress as the swimmers do. I also learnt how to deal with discipline issues during a session. This helped me to feel more confident to take a group on my own.
Recently I was given the opportunity to attend the ASA Conference in Daventry and take part in the ASA Youth Development Day. I learnt how to develop my skills as a leader and how to develop myself as a young volunteer. It helped me to focus on my goals and what kind of coach I wanted to be. I learnt about the different leadership styles and when it is appropriate to use a particular style. I listened to a key note speech by some of the leading people in the ASA and listened to their objectives for the future of swimming. I also heard about the ASA Youth Forum which is a group of young people that meet together to organise projects to increase participation in Aquatics and promote the sport. I hope to create a Youth Forum for my swimming club and work with the club’s committee to voice the swimmers opinions and make the club the best it can be. I also now mentor the new volunteers on the Young Volunteer Programme within my club. I am very proud to know that I have inspired younger swimmers to take part in the Programme and I am happy to be able to support them along the way. After gaining my level 2 qualification I have been offered regular hours teaching at my local leisure centre. I hope to continue teaching and possibly gain my Level 3 qualification. I also hope to go to University to study a sports coaching degree. If you are interested in finding out more about the Young Volunteers Programme please contact: Alma Borthwick via email - Alma@wiltssport.org or call the WASP office on 01380 725111.

The 4th annual Sports Awards were held on Tuesday 24 September in the new Atrium of County Hall Trowbridge. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all so much for the work that you do and the time that you give every single day, come rain or shine. The efforts of the many sports clubs, organisations and individuals who strive to keep the communities of Wiltshire physically active, fit and healthy are extremely important to us all. We recognise that your efforts to develop the skills of athletes and volunteers alike ensure that recreational and competitive opportunities are available. We also appreciate that managing and sustaining your clubs can sometimes be stressful. The responsibility can fall on a faithful few and can seem relentless. It is our hope that these annual awards highlight the enormous contribution that you all make to increasing participation and improving health and wellbeing throughout our communities and we want to celebrate the incredible work that you do. There have been more than 100 nominations this year and reading them has been truly awe inspiring. Wiltshire is honoured to have committed volunteers who are making such a difference to the quality of people’s lives, as well as an amazing range of extremely talented athletes competing at the highest levels in their chosen sport. All those involved should feel a sense of pride; we are certainly proud of you. The special guest for the evening was Mark Colbourne MBE who won the Gold medal in 3Km Pursuit in the 2012 London Paralympic Games. We were also pleased to welcome Phil de Glanville former England Rugby Captain who presented the awards.

His young boxers feel passionate about their sport due to the positive impact Brian has on them. He has completed a Somerset Police course so that he is able to get involved with coaching young people on probation in order to give them a second chance. Brian was also instrumental in securing a Lottery grant and has ensured that the equipment they have purchased has made the club more appealing to the younger generation, as well as to the older members. This season Brian has produced a West Country Champion.
Inclusion Coach of the Year - Tony Ellis Wheelchair Tag Rugby League Coaching Qualification Tony is founder and head coach of Swindon St George Wheelchair Tag Rugby Club. In 2011 he added a wheelchair team into an already established Rugby League Club. The club has members who have chronic health conditions, physical and learning disabilities and mental health issues. In 2013, the team entered the National Super League, the only team in the south west of England to do so. Tony is a natural leader and is a well respected coach. His strength is being able to adapt the session to meet the needs of the athlete. He is confident in being spontaneous and adjusting traditional coaching techniques to ensure every member of the club succeeds.
Young Coach of the Year - Jonny Crowley Lawn Tennis Association Level 2 Jonnie moved to Devizes Tennis Club in April 2012 to assist the head coach in the task of rebuilding the participation numbers at the club. He has a naturally easy going character, but at the same time commands a high degree of behaviour, discipline and respect from both juniors and adults. He is very dedicated to the role of coaching both on and off the court and takes a pride in the club environment, going beyond the call of duty to ensure the surroundings are well kept. Jonnie has an active role in the promotion and presentation of the club in order to enhance participation and membership.
