TERM 1, ISSUE 1 14 AUGUST 2014

“We are like dwarfs sitting on the shoulders of giants. We see more, and things that are more distant, than they did, not because our sight is superior or because we are taller than they, but because they raise us up, and by their great stature add to ours.” John of Salisbury (1159AD) It is not possible, or respectful, to look at the future without first acknowledging the efforts of those that go before. There are many who have impacted KISC over the last 27 years from the time Alan and Margaret McIlhenny (and Christine Stone) established KISC, but we acknowledge the more recent efforts of Judith Ellis. As we consider where we are now with a thriving K-13 with MSA accreditation; KISC EQUIP, our teacher training programme partnering with Nepali schools as well as significant progress being made in establishing a teacher training college (KISC TEC) it is encouraging to see how God has blessed KISC through the years. As Solomon wrote ‘For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.’ Now is a new season and a time of change. Our response to change can be one of dread. We desire to keep things how they were. Or it can be with an attitude of excitement. The latter is how we, the three new Directors, are approaching our new appointments as leaders of KISC. There is a degree of anticipation that comes with anything new, but there is an expectation that God has placed us here for such a time as this. It was good to meet with many parents last night and introduce ourselves and share a little of our vision for KISC. Over the term we will be introducing changes due to the new structure but will be building on the foundation of the MVVP, with particular emphasis on the vision statement of sharing Christ’s love and achieving excellent education. As a staff here at KISC we are grateful that you have entrusted your children’s (...continued on page 2)

(cont.,) education to us for a season. As we journey together with them, guiding them in their growth and understanding, as they get to experience and understand so much more about God’s world around them, our prayer is that they truly can experience Christ’s love through the excellent education they receive and the time they spend at KISC.

Pradeep Chaulagain is joining us this year as the PE Teaching Assistant for Primary. Pradeep is from Nepal. He did his diploma in Electronic Engineering and has currently been working on his first year of Bachelors in Social Work.

A word I have used these past few days is “overwhelmed,” but in a good way. God has overwhelmed me as I have the privilege to be a part of KISC, and especially to work with the Primary Staff. The staffs’ stories of why they are here at KISC and their level of dedication to the students is amazing. The students each have a story that is just as amazing and their love for KISC is evident. Our theme this term is justice and we are learning what God says is just and right. We started off the first primary assembly with Ephesians 6:1-3.

Hannah Dornon (Primary Music Teacher) is working with years K through 8. This is her first year teaching after graduating from Asbury University in the States, but she spent many of her childhood years in Nepal. Hannah is thrilled to be teaching the subject she loves to fellow Third Culture Kids. Katie Laborde (Primary Arts Assistant & Year K Afternoon Cover) finished her undergraduate degree in March 2014 in Art Education (K-12) from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia USA. Katie enjoys the opportunity to be working in the arts and with the Kindergartners (Term 1&2 only).

Parents, thank you for choosing KISC, and becoming a part of our community. Please let us know how we can help you help your child(ren). I am here to serve you.

FAREWELL

MUSICAL PRODUCTION NOTICES/INFORMATION presents:

Preparations are underway for the upcoming KISC production of “Fiddler on the Roof”. A musical theatre tradition, Tevye the milkman tries to protect his daughters and his way of life from a changing world. Fiddler On The Roof JR. is a special adaptation of the classic Broadway musical, which tackles the universal theme of tradition in ways that reach across barriers of race, class, nationality, and religion. The production team is still in need of some costume items. Here is a list of the items still needed:

Afternoon Matinee for Area Schools Friday September 19th

Evening Performances: Saturday September 20th Wednesday September 24th Thursday September 25th

All performances will be held at KISC. Times to be announced.

Jewish-style caps (a.k.a. Kippas) Fur Hats Dark-colored Tailored Jackets Ladies Shawls (in neutral or dark colors) Long Skirts (in neutral or dark colors) Long Dresses (in neutral or dark colors) Long-sleeved Blouses (in neutral or dark colors) If you have any of these items to either lend or donate, please drop them off in Reception by Friday, 22 August with an attached label of the owner’s name (if you want it returned). In addition, we are in need of a few people that could assist with sewing costumes. Please contact Kristi Loper at: kloper@kisc.edu.np if you are interested in helping in this way.

CHANGES IN LIBRARY POLICY This year the library’s overdue policy is changing slightly as follows: • Books can be borrowed for an initial 2 weeks (same as before). • If these 2 weeks pass and the book has not been returned, an email will be sent to the borrower stating that it is overdue. (Primary students’ Class Teachers and parents will both be receiving these emails.) • In another week if the book still has not been returned, another email will be sent and we will start charging Rs 5 per day [we will only start charging fines on books borrowed this previous monday (11th August) or later]. • If the borrower is a Secondary student, after another week of not receiving the book we will also email their parents about the issue and the fine that has been earned so far. We will continue to send overdue notices each week to the borrower. Books can be renewed twice for another 2 weeks each, but only if no one else has requested it. If a book is renewed after we have started charging fines, the fine will remain and not continue unless the book becomes overdue again. The maximum fine is Rs 500 per book at which point it will be considered lost. ** Please return any books borrowed last term or earlier so that we can have an accurate library catalog as we start this new year. PROVIDING GARDENING SKILLS TO FEED STUDENTS

Left: Bethel School students preparing the ground for planting. Right: students learn worm composting at Good Shepherd School from EQUIP Trainer, Rae Goss.

As the term’s theme of Justice plays out we have a song that speaks of living to feed the hungry. EQUIP is living that out now as we train other schools and kick start their own gardens. Good Shepard is starting a garden on their roof for the students to learn from and bring home what they learn to their families. Bethel School is the same however theirs is on an extremely steep slope. Late this July we terraced their slope into a gardenable piece of land. We have provided these schools with supplies ranging from water tanks to vermicompost to get them started. We gave them training on sustainable gardening and a worm farm to give them continual fertilizer. A new design has been made for our own Kitchen garden at KISC school, I hope you enjoy it even more than the last one!

WANT TO BE INVOLVED? KISC Teachers are welcome to attend and help out with the training groups. KISC TAs are invited to attend the trainings. Contact Amit Bhandari (abhandari@kisc.edu.np) for more details and to register. September 6, 2014: Primary Reading Phase II Training for Kathmandu schools @ KISC from 9am to 4pm. Please contact Sue Gim at sgim@kisc.edu.np if you want to volunteer.

September 13, 2014: Art Training @ KISC for Kathmandu schools from 9am to 4pm. Training will be led by Sally Darlison from Australia (an artist and primary art teacher).

Michele Morton, Ed. D.

PTA(학부모 교사 연합)에서 인사드립니다!
