19 (Fri) Secondary Haatiban Trip When we look back at the history of KISC, END OF TERM especially during the time of transition in 2004 19 (Mon) Staff / Parent Worship when KISC was brought under the ownership 20 (Tue) ALL CLASSES BEGIN of HDCS, there were times we were very discouraged. At times we even asked ourselves if it is worth it all because our four years of hard work did not bring any significant results. It was contrary to our expectations. It took nearly 4 years to negotiate with various government agencies. It was not only during the transition period that KISC had to go through such struggles, but also at the time Dr. Alan Mchlehany was starting the school in 1987. During difficult times we were often reminded that our struggle is not against flesh and blood. The Government of Nepal provided visas for our teachers Join us for the Christmas Carol Service on and let us continue for 2 years without having our December 18 at 6:00 PM @ KISC. agreement. We finally signed our agreement in 2007 with all the visa posts we had requested. The Ministry of Education further extended our agreement for 5 more years in July 2012 with 80 visa posts. KISC is now a channel of blessings for 22 Nepali schools and their communities, as well as over 200 students and their families in four different districts in Nepal through EQUIP. The lesson we can learn from these historic events of KISC is that our labour in the Lord is not wasted. We have to have an eternal perspective when we are working for the Lord. We may not see immediate results, but God has already given us a victory through Christ. So, let us have an eternal perspective whether we are teaching a music class or running a parent workshop in an EQUIP partner school in a rural village. We are not alone. We are in partnership with our God. We are working for His Glory which is our motto, a part of KISC’s Crest. The Directors

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK In preparing for the December newsletter, I realized it is the last one for me. Immediately I knew what I wanted to highlight and why as I reflect back over the last 6 months. There are many wonderful things about KISC and one of them is Assembly time. Twice a week, someone from the primary staff takes the lead and shares with children and staff from their heart. KISC helps direct by providing a term theme, yet the teaching staff creates the entire program. Here are some examples of the assemblies at KISC in Term 1 and 2. • Y2 did a video about justice: how fairness (everyone getting the same) and justice (everyone getting what they need to be their best) are different, with a sub-note of loving your enemies (doing what was best for the Count of Chaos even though he was being mean). We learned about being part of the body and how each one is a special part that is important to the whole — celebrating our differences as parts. • YK talked about valuing differences and highlighting the year 5 trip to ABBS. • The Wordless Book taught us about God’s plan of salvation through the colors black, red, white, yellow, and green. A song highlights the colors as: Black - My heart was dark with sin, until my Savior came in, Red - His precious blood I know, White - Has washed it white as snow, Yellow - And in His Word I’m told, I’ll walk the streets of gold, Green - To grow in Christ each day. • We told the story of Jonathan and David and its parallel to justice and fairness, learning to understand that sometimes God had a different plan from our plan. • Y6 helped us with worship and prayer, and understanding the part prayer and worship play and demonstrating its importance in our lives. • Y4 presented a video with kids on Micah 6:8 and talked about being thankful for Jesus coming to save us, using the biblical examples of Saul becoming Paul. • In Term 2, with the Shield on display, Daniel Parnell recapped what each part of the shield means and do we think it represents what KISC is. • Y3 pulled the key from the shield and how God uses us as the key to open doors for others. • Y1 displayed and explained putting on the armor of God. When we face struggles how important it is for us to put on the Armor of God so we can make wise choices. (See the picture of Ms. Treese) • David and Goliath fought a battle in the KISC hall this week and David won. The children are learning the importance of believing the promises in God’s Word. (see picture) The final Assembly this term, Friday, December 19, will showcase all the primary staff in a video. It will be an Assembly to remember. Mark your calendar and please come and join us. Michele M. Morton, Ed. D. Primary Principal

PARLEZ-VOUS FRANÇAIS?

On Tuesday 18 November, 30 of our Secondary students went to the French Institute Alliance Française in Teku. They had a great time playing traditional French games called pétanque and palet breton. They also had the opportunity to visit the library and borrow French books and DVDs. Their favorite book was definitely one showing yummy recipes! We ended our visit with a well deserved French meal: quiche aux poireaux, poulet et purée de pommes de terre, beignets aux pommes. As they now know their way around the institute, do not hesitate to bring them there again and let the French department know if you would like to borrow resources (KISC has a membership card).

INSPIRATION DESIGN CREATIVITY

NATURE INSPIRATION Year 7 students went to the local Nursery to draw flowers and plants. Zirish, the owner of the Nursery which is just by Moksh, kindly let the Year 7 Students come and draw for their Design Technology lesson. The students’ drawings will form part of their research to design a nature pattern inspired by the artist and designer William Morris. JEWELLERY MAKING Year 8 students visited Beauty for Ashes to see how their jewellery is made. The students got the opportunity to interview the Business Director, Glenda Hauser who explained about the organization and the creations the women make. The students visited the showroom and were even given a gift for visiting. They had an awesome time and have started making jewellery themselves. Suzie Parr, Head of Design Technology

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

The Year 5 Class went to ABBS, a Nepali school for children with special needs from age 5-18. We went on November 20 for our first “Friendship Club” of this school year and will go one time per month. While at ABBS the students sing songs together, play games and interact with each other. This is a wonderful opportunity to blessed and to bless others while learning to value our differences and find our similarities. Our next date is set for December 11.

HOUR OF CODE

As part of the week of Computer Science Education KISC ICT department will be participating in the “Hour of Code” event. All classes in KISC will spend an hour learning to code during the week of December 8. The purpose of “Hour of Code” event is to demistify “code” and prove that anyone can learn the basics to be a maker, a creator, an innovator. There will also be opportunities and resources outside of class time for interested parents.

SECONDARY PRINCIPAL ANNOUNCEMENT We are delighted to introduce to the KISC community David & Elisabeth Hamer. They have recently been accepted by CMS Australia to come to KISC and for David to take on the role of a secondary principal. They are from Melbourne, Australia and have 3 grown up children and 2 grandchildren. After finishing work this Christmas they will be spending 6 weeks in mission training and, God willing, will be heading out to Nepal in the spring. PTA has a weekly time of COMMUNITY PRAYER at 2.30 pm every Monday. You are more than welcome to join us and pray with us for students, teachers and the whole KISC Community!

This last month EQUIP has been working with our six partner schools in Lamjung and our ten schools in Palpa. I have been thinking about how our EQUIP training can change teachers’ hope, vision and passion and through that their classroom practice. I have been excited to see how teachers experiencing being creative themselves, has helped them understand the importance of this for their students. It has also been good to see and hear from them the impact of being in a classroom environment in which they are cared for and valued. Annie Brown, EQUIP Teacher Trainer

KITCHEN GARDEN SUCCESS

KISC IS HIRING!

I am happy to report that yet another school now supplements their children’s hostel with vegetables from their own kitchen garden. Bethel school in Tansen, Palpa just had their first harvest ever. Their harvest was above and beyond what was expected at 10 kg of green beans and radishes the size of a grown man’s arm. I was so encouraged by seeing how well they were doing and their enthusiasm for gardening. Their unplantable steep and infertile slope is now producing, along with green beans and radishes, a plethora of mustard greens, cauliflower, and dill. We also printed a colored version of our Kitchen Garden Manual (in Nepali language) and delivered it to the school. The manual will help supplement our practical teachings in gardening and allow the teachers to more easily transfer knowledge to students. Rae Goss, Kitchen Garden Teacher Trainer
