Newsletter TERM 2, ISSUE 1 / 23 OCTOBER 2014 FOR THE GLORY OF GOD (*

T2 DATES

This term in school assemblies we are looking at the Crest. KISC’s crest is a visual representation of how the students, staff and parents described KISC in a survey completed in November 2010. At the top of the shield is Mount Everest in the foreground with the Nepali flag nestled into it and the Himalayas receding into the horizon. This speaks directly about the land of Nepal, where KISC is situated and how KISC wants to be a part of the development of Nepal. The rising sun is taken from the Nepali flag and speaks of a new hope and a new day. There is an open book that symbolizes learning and openness with the cross being at the centre, the centre of all at KISC, the risen Lord Jesus. On the right of the crest is a key which symbolizes many ideas such as empowerment and coming of age. Also traditionally the key is a symbol of knowledge and of guardianship. From a Christian perspective, the keys from heaven give the power to enter into eternal life. The key gives access to knowledge that was previously hidden. On the left of the crest is an olive branch. It has become a symbol of peace and from peace come the KISC values Love, Community, Grace, Justice and Excellence as represented by the five leaves. The motto at the bottom of the crest is: “k/d]Zj/sf] dlxdfsf] nflu“ or “For the glory of God”. We want to give God the glory for His hand on KISC. God’s provision cannot be doubted over the years and His hand on KISC is still active – His fingerprints are all over this place. We want to give God the glory for sustaining us and moving us on. We are grateful for the favour we have with the various government departments; for our partnerships with Nepali schools that EQUIP works with; for the continued use of the sports field; and we want to express particular praise and honour to God for the provision of the staff that we have at KISC. For the Nepali staff, the short-term placements, for those who are able to volunteer for longer terms. In particular we are grateful for new long-term commitments from the Primary Principal, a Donor Relations CoCoordinator (February ’15), Site OCTOBER/NOVEMBER Manager (Sept ’15) and a number of 24 (Fri) Tihar, no school new teachers currently applying for the next academic year – we also 27-3 (Mon-Fri) Activity Week hope to be able to announce a new 3 (Fri) Primary 1/2 day Secondary Principal soon. 9 (Sun) PTA Winter Fair We would like to take this opportunity 12 (Wed) Secondary parent/teacher interviews to give God the glory for what He has 19 (Wed) Secondary activity week presentation done, what He is doing and He will evening do at KISC. The Directors 1

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE It seems as a new KISC Term is underway, with it is a new season, bringing cooler weather, a more relaxed atmosphere, and an excitement that Christmas is just around the corner. Speaking of corners, we feel like we have turned one or two, do you? God has a way of working in seasons in our lives. He calls us to do certain things, often times stretching us to our limits. We think, “I can’t do this!” and He knows, “Yes, you can. I created you and I know what you can do!” Whether you are a student, staff, teacher, or parent, we have all been in a place where we thought it would never end. Our trust in God is tested. Our love for others is tested. And God continues to extend His Grace. Please be encouraged that God does know what is best for you. He is on the throne in Heaven and has everything under control – even though in your life it may look chaotic right now – God has got this. He wants to be on the throne of your heart. Will you let Him? He can come into your life and in one Word, cause all chaos to diminish, and His Peace to descend like a dove in every area of your life. I have witnessed this at KISC in many lives here. Those who allow God to reign in their lives bring a peace to KISC that is heavenly and contagious. So, next time you are feeling challenged, pressured, or overwhelmed, find someone here that you know can pray with you and help you find God’s way. For His Glory, Michele Morton, Ed. D. SALT (Service and Learning Trip) is led by the students and offers an opportunity to serve and bless a community in Nepal. This project was in partnership with EQUIP and was led by Abby Knoble who coordinated the activities throughout the week. We had the amazing opportunity to work in Lumjung with the local hospital and worked with two local schools. Abby designed a very colourful room for babies on the children’s ward. Everyone took part including patients on the ward to create a room full of rainbow bamboo and swinging pandas. Some students and staff also donated blood to help with the shortage. In schools we led a young leader’s project, where KISC students trained secondary students to deliver sessions to primary students. We had three teams. In the Art team was Abby Knoble, Josh Galpin, Bora Park and Emily Smith. In the Sport team was Joseph Boehm, Jordan DeBortoli and Selah Kramer. Finally in the Music team, Peter Jung, Nahum Pradhan, Katie Smith and Matthew Stromlund. The days were a great WEEK success and empowering to all those involved. Friendships were formed and our students did a Comments fantastic job of teaching. Through our sponsorship from KICC we were also able to bless the schools with equipment and supplies so they could carry on with the sessions after we had left. The students worked hard, walked for hours each Bring packed day and grew in their faith as they led devotions lunch and in the morning and evening. Visual Arts Training

Pray for: 路 Lamjung training visit Nov 2-11 路 Palpa training visit Nov 20-29 路 Teachers Trainers safety during travel

27 teachers from Kathmandu and Trisuli learned drawing, paper construction, modeling, printing and collage on September 13, 2014 at KISC hall. Sally Darlison, an artist and primary art teacher from Melbourne Australia, facilitated the training with the help of KISC teachers and EQUIP trainers. The training covered the curriculum of social studies (grades 1-3). Visual Arts section in Social studies curriculum, in many schools, gets less attention. This training helped the teachers to get a big picture of visual arts.

BMS Action Team visits Nepal Jo, Meagan, Jenny and Hannah are the BMS Action Team from UK who will be in Nepal for six months. They are currently doing Language and Orientation Programme, and starting next week they will be helping at KISC during Activity Week. The KISC Winter Fair is coming up on Sunday 9th Nov, 11:30am – 2:30pm. The whole KISC community is invited to be a part of this event! There will be yummy food, stalls of handcrafts and secondhand goods, and fun activities for the children. Contact Mirjam Thiessen (mailto:mirjamthiessen@gmail.com) by Oct 31st if you would like to hold a stall. The PTA stall welcomes donations of gently used (in good condition) clothes, books, and household items. Volunteers are needed to assist with sorting donated goods, setting up for the fair, selling tickets, helping with security, and manning stalls – it’s fun and a great way to be involved in the school community! Contact Elisabeth Gullbra if you are willing to help (mailto:elisabeth@ gullbra.net). If you do not want to stand in line the day of the fair, please come and pre-purchase tickets in reception the week before. Blessings, Mirjam Thiessen (PTA Chair) (* 뒷면 한글 번역본 참고)

Recruitment Tuition Discount

Refundable Deposit Policy

For every new teacher that is hired in a school year based on a parent’s recruitment, KISC will offer that parent a 10% discount for one of their children/child tuition. Should a parent recruit multiple teachers who are hired in a school year, that parent will receive an additional 10% discount for each additional teacher hired. Please view the chart below for discount allotments based on the recruited teacher’s time commitment.

We hope that the new policy is more flexible and can accommodate the uncertainty many overseas workers experience. However it is very beneficial to our administration if notice is given to KISC at the earliest opportunity when you know that your child(ren) will be leaving. To notify KISC about your child(ren) leaving please write to admin@kisc.edu.np

New Staff Commitment Discount: • Less Than 1 year 10% discount on 1 student tuition for 1 term

A Refundable Deposit is held and will be returned in full when a student leaves KISC subject to the following conditions: • The student’s family have no outstanding fees • Any property (text books, kindle, musical instrument etc.) being loaned to the student are returned undamaged • If the student’s family fails to give sufficient notice about the student’s intention to remain at KISC and expenditure has already been committed on the student’s behalf such as purchase of text books, activity week etc. Insufficient notice will normally be considered to be less than term’s notice. Exceptions to this will be where families have to leave Nepal at short notice due to circumstances beyond their control. If you have questions concerning the refundable deposit please contact Angus (adouglas@kisc.edu.np)

• More than 1 year 10% discount on 1 student tuition for 1 school year To help us ensure you receive the tuition discount, please email us at recruit@kisc.edu.np to notify us of the teachers you have recruited who are applying. Immediate Openings

FOR THE GLORY OF GOD Michele Morgan Morton, Ed.D. Primary Principal 7

Mirjam Thiessen (PTA Chair) 8
