Newsletter TERM 1, ISSUE 2 / 11 SEPTEMBER 2014
JUSTICE
What is Justice? How is God just? Why is Justice missing in the world? This term we have been asking that question throughout KISC both as students and staff as a school, as EQUIP, as an operations team. What we do know is that God is just. Our term verse, Deuteronomy 32:3-4 states that his works are perfect and all his ways are just. Both the primary and secondary assemblies have been shown the picture at left, that illustrates well the difference between equality and justice. Sometimes, in our weakness we forget this and desire to get the same as everyone else, yet actually, in a truly just school we should receive what we need. God loves us all equally, whatever our nationality, culture, gender, beliefs or religion. He demonstrated this to us through the cross which paid the ultimate price. But he does not treat us all equally. This can be hard to accept at times, but we can be reassured that his works are perfect. At KISC we are aiming for excellent education that is just, but of course not necessarily equal. As a school we hope to do justice to the students through our classes, through our socialisation, through our events and activities. This term the students involved in swimming and basketball have been doing justice to their God-given talents. The swimmers have won many medals and the basketball team have brought home a rather large runners-up trophy from one tournament. Through hard work, practice and determination they have glorified God and grown as individuals. The same can be said of all those involved in the Fiddler on the Roof production. Again, they are doing justice to their God-given talents through hard work and practice, whether it be through the managing of the lights, the painting of the sets, their part in the chorus or through the lead roles. In all over 100 students and many staff have been involved in one way or another. Please do come and support them all and purchase tickets for the shows. God Bless. A NOTE FROM THE PRIMARY PRINCIPAL If you asked me what is the best part about being at KISC, my answer would be in parts, like slices of a delicious apple pie. One part is definitely the students! They are the joy of the campus, with their laughing, playing, learning, lining up, and smiling. The next part is the teachers and the important part they play here at KISC. They are all excellent in their teaching, but most of all they are excellent in how they love the students. The next part is the parents. The commitment of the KISC parents is beyond anything I have experienced as an educational leader. They are simply amazing. Another part is all the other staff here at KISC that makes this school work so smoothly. From the gate staff, security, maintenance, to the wonderful kitchen staff that I am convinced can cook anything, KISC is blessed with a community of servants! I am most blessed to be a part of the KISC community.
Year 3 is learning about communities this term and about different beliefs, traditions, and customs. They had the wonderful opportunity to have the Korean moms come in and teach about the Korean Thanksgiving Day called Chuseok. Chuseok is the biggest and most important holiday in Korea. Family members from near and far get together to give thanks for the abundant harvest. The parents taught Year 3 the history behind the holiday through a presentation that included food and traditional Korean dress. The students were able to participate in a number of activities including tug of war, trying on special Korean clothes, throwing rubber arrows in a bowl, and kicking che ki. The celebration ended with the traditional Korean food which the students enjoyed very much.

Thank you all for being a part of a great start this fall. There is a lot going on right now, but I do want to high light some of the things. I want to invite you all to our weekly PTA prayer every Monday 8.10. Please come and take part. Our prayer makes an impact and we want to see a school with Jesus in the centre. You all know that there has been a severe flooding and landslides in Midwestern Nepal, and at KISC we are having a KUTUMBA concert and an auction to raise funds for it Friday the 12th. I would like to encourage you to support this cause by coming and buying tickets. I would also like to ask you all to bring snacks to share. If we provide the food, all the money raised can go to the survivors.

SMC - Financial Information
EXPENSE
INCOME
The KISC annual accounts have just been audited and the accounts presented and discussed at SMC. In Nepal, the financial year runs from mid-July to mid-July. Here are some highlights from the accounts which cover the period from mid-July 2013 to mid-July 2014. The total budgeted income for last year was Rs. 120 BUDGET ACTUAL SURPLUS million. Actual income was Rs. 129 million (7% higher than budget). The main reason for this was the higher exchange Rs. Rs. Rs. 8,883,812 rate of the rupee against the US dollar and UK sterling. The 120,605,913 129,489,725 school also received some donations that had not been budgeted for. One of these covered the costs of renovating the science lab to meet MSA requirements. Over 80% of income for KISC comes from student fees. After this, donations for BUDGET ACTUAL DEFICIT EQUIP are the next highest source of income. The total budgeted expenses were Rs. 110 million. Rs. Rs. Rs. The accounts show that the actual expenses were Rs. 110,547,463 128,555,847 18,008384 128 million. This means we spent 16% more than we had budgeted. Whilst this sounds like a lot, a closer look shows that this is due to a high amount of depreciation. If depreciation is excluded, KISC would have under spent by 5% against the budget. During 2013/14, work was completed on the sports field. As the lease on the land was initially for one year only, the investment on the site was been depreciated over the same period. This has led to a large amount of depreciation showing on the accounts. Over a third of expenses are directly related to students (teacher salaries, curriculum etc.) Another third is classed as ‘Administrative’ and this includes salaries of all the office and support staff and the costs of running the campus including the rent of our premises. Taking actual income and actual expenses, KISC made a surplus of just under Rs. 1 million (Rs. 933,878 to be precise). The end result is that KISC has more money in the bank at the end of July this year compared to a year ago. We have taken this opportunity to allocate more of these funds to the KISC Building Fund which now stands at Rs. 53 million (around $550,000). I know that many of you are not that interested in all this but if you do want more information, the accounts can be made available to you. Staff will get a chance to hear a short presentation at a forthcoming staff meeting. I am happy to respond to any specific question you have on behalf of SMC. Ian Chadwell, Treasurer
ONE DROP AT A TIME
September 13, 2014: Art Training @ KISC for Kathmandu schools from 9am to 4pm. Training will be led by Sally Darlison from Australia (an artist and primary art teacher).
On September 6, EQUIP held Science and English trainings at KISC. EQUIP English trainers presented English Reading Phase II to thirty participants from 17 different schools. Phase II training dealt with vocabulary, non-fiction reading, and using the textbook creatively. It was the EQUIP trainers’ great joy to hear the stories of teachers implementing in their classes what they learned from the Phase I training. A water drop might seem insignificant to the big rock but it can reshape it in the long term. EQUIP wants to see the same changes among the teachers who attend the trainings and implement learned activities in their classrooms.
Teacher Trainers:
• Dil Bahadur Chhetri • Liz Sheppard • Krishna Bahadur Bohora • Sandra Oh • Sukjin Gim Special thanks to Julie Goldberg, Hannah Holmes and Kitchen staff.
WANT TO BE INVOLVED? KISC Teachers are welcome to attend and help out with the training groups. KISC TAs are invited to attend the trainings. Contact Amit Bhandari (abhandari@kisc.edu.np) for more details and to register. 6
The last academic year (2013-14) 65 students from EQUIP partner school received scholarships totaling Rs. 9, 05,688. EQUIP received donations for all of the students supported. ANNOUNCEMENTS INTRODUCING THE NEW PRIMARY PRINCIPAL
W
e are delighted to announce that Samantha Seymour has been appointed the Primary Principal from January 2015 onwards. Samantha joined KISC back in July and is the year 3 teacher. She will continue in this role until December, while also being prepared by the current Principal, Michele Morton. Samantha spent 14 years as a class teacher in Alabama in the US. She has a Master’s degree in Collaborative Teaching and spent several years working as the lead teacher of a grade 3 team of teachers. The team of teachers and the students in grade 3 at the school was bigger than the whole of KISC Primary! Samantha’s husband is working in Nepal with Mountain Child and she has two children, Jack (Michael) in year 5 and Isabelle in year 4. God willing, they are committed to be in Nepal until at least 2018. We look forward to Samantha taking over in January and in the meantime ask that you pray for her as she prepares to take on this important role.

Michele Morton Primary Principal 9
Mirjam Thiessen mirjamthiessen@gmail.com
Samantha의 부군은 네팔 Mountain Child에서 일하고 있으며 자녀로는 Year 5의 Jack 과 Micheal , 그리고 Year 4의 Isabelle을 슬하에 두고 있습니다.
