Our prayers for the provision of land to build a sports facility for our students was And we are confident that he hears answered in May, when we signed an agreement to rent the us whenever we ask for anything empty plot of land next to the KISC lane. Plans for the land that pleases him. And since we know include: he hears us when we make our • a basketball court (with use for other sports including requests, we also know that he will volleyball, badminton and futsal), give us what we ask for. • a football/play field, 1 JOHN 5:14-15 • a design and technology room (with a workshop for the maintenance team) and • space for parking. We are very pleased to announce that construction is going great and we are still on track to have the basketball court and the design and technology room operational by the beginning of Term 2 in midOctober. The concrete base for the basketball court has been laid with the final skim on the court and the D&T room being done at the end of this week. The metal frame of both buildings are being painted and the roof will be put on the basketball court this week. We are looking forward to the official opening during
SMC NOTES KISC 2012-2013 FINANCES EXPLANATION The KISC annual accounts have just been audited and the accounts presented and discussed at SMC. I want to take a moment of your time to share some of the highlights of the accounts that cover the period mid-July 2012 to mid-July 2013 (the Nepal financial year). Before explaining the numbers, I need to explain that a change was made to the way the accounts are presented. Up until January this year, KISC EQUIP had been treated separately with a completely different set of accounts. Since January, EQUIP has been integrated into the main KISC accounts. This means that the audited accounts show 6 months of separate EQUIP income and expenses and the full year of KISC accounts with the remainder of the EQUIP accounts added. 2012-2013 Total budgeted income: NPR 95.7 million Actual Income: NPR 101 million (5.5% higher than budgeted) Main reasons for the higher than expected income: 1. More new students enrolling and paying the capital levy, 2. Higher donations to EQUIP 3. Currency exchange gain (this occurs when the exchange rate between the dollar and the rupee is higher than anticipated when the budget was made).
2012-2013 Total budgeted expenses: NPR 91.3 million Actual expenses: NPR 86.4 million (5.4% under budget) Main reasons for expenses being less than planned: 1. Lower staffing costs 2. Less EQUIP expenses 3. We had planned to rent additional premises which did not happen until the end of the year so we also spent less on rent than originally planned.
As a result, KISC made an overall surplus of Rs. 14.7 million (about $150,000). That may look like a lot, but the actual variations from budget were not that high. Spending less than planned is not always a good thing. For example, lower expenses on staff occurred because not all posts were filled. That meant existing staff had to work harder. The end result is that KISC has more money in the bank at the end of July this year compared to a year ago. Some of this is allocated to the KISC Building Fund (current total is US$340,000). It is a good start, but the sums of money involved in buying and constructing our own permanent site involve sums of money much larger. We know that when this happens, it will clearly be the work of God. Congratulations for getting to the end of this article. For those who do want more information, the audit summaries have been sent to you via email and I am happy to respond to any specific question you may have. Ian Chadwell Treasurer

SPORTS CORNER
Last week Primary students of the cricket and football (soccer) clubs went to The British School to play some friendly matches. The footballers played different “rounds of robin” (5 vs 5), with some losses and some wins. The cricketers played 1 game, which they honourably lost by 1 point. Our students had a great time playing against TBS. They enjoyed the challenge, enjoyed the team spirit it created and showed fair play at all times. Parents that joined to cheer made the atmosphere even better. It wasn’t about trophies and winning, but it was about the joy a team sport can bring. The students will continue to train, practise and develop their skills even more during Term 2.
KISC swimmers recently participated in the Little Angel’s Swim Meet. Congratulation to Girls Medley Relay team (Abigail Knoble, Emily Smith, Rosie Clewett, Grace Im) for winning silver medal in medley relay and also freestyle relay team (Esther Butterworth, Emily Smith, Grace Im, Rosie Clewett) for winning bronze medal in freestyle relay.

EQUIP UPDATE The recent EQUIP second phase training visit to Tansen, Palpa, included a session for 18 teachers from The Association of Christian Teachers. The session aimed to build on the teachers’ understanding of the Biblical World View from the previous visit by the team in April. It also aimed to show how the use of drama, stories, games and visual images can help to get across a message when teaching. Members of the EQUIP team took on different roles in a mini drama which used ideas from the book ‘With’ by Skye Jethani to deliver the powerful message about how our relationship can be ‘Life UNDER God’, ‘Life OVER God’, ‘Life FROM God’ and ‘Life FOR God’. A personal reflection activity using visual images at the end gave the teachers an opportunity to share their thoughts on the impact on their learning and showed how they had taken on board the concept of ‘Life WITH God’ being the relationship that God ‘most’ wants from us.

Congratulations to Selah Kramer in Year 10, who took part in the NMB Bank nation-wide Inter-School Painting Competition with 100 other secondary school students on Saturday 21st September at Patan Durbar Museum. The event aimed to create awareness amongst young people of the importance of heritage and students were given three hours to produce a painting on the theme of Cultural Heritage Sites of Nepal. All the paintings including Selah’s have been on display for one week at the Aarniko Gallery, Nepal Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Naxal. They can also be viewed at facebook.com/nmbbank.

COMMUNITY The importance of community has been taught in many assemblies this term. This week the Stone Soup story was performed by the primary teaching assistants. They acted out a Nepali version of this well know story about an old man who cooks a pot of stone soup to teach some selfish villagers the important of building community through the act of sharing. As each of the villagers interacts with the old man, they are amazed that he is willing to share his soup with them. This simple act of sharing brings a response and the villagers end up donating some of their vegetables, which they have been hoarding for themselves. As the end of the story, everyone in the village enjoys a bowl of soup and much laughter. The old man sneaks away to the next village to share his soup and this important message. What a wonderful way to remind our community of the importance of sharing and caring through the giving of our talents and resources. God has gifted each of us, not to hoard our talents and resources to ourselves, but to share them so as to build each other up and function as the body of Christ for His glory.
The KISC Brochure and Be Involved Flyer are now available in Korean. The brochure outlines God’s work in Nepal through KISC and KISC EQUIP, as well as our vision to help transform Nepali education through KISC TEC (Transformational Education College). The flyer details the ways you can support KISC. Please stop by Communications office (3rd floor, admin building) to pick up your copies. The publications are also available on the KISC website at www.kisc.edu.np.
