UPCOMING EVENTS

ZUALA CUP A celebration of the gift of life

March 22 March 23 March 27 March 28 April 15 April 22

On Saturday, March 23, the KISC community will celebrate the life of an extraordinary individual - Zuala Pachuau. Zuala, a KISC student, was a very enthusiastic person who loved life and basketball. He was killed in an accident in 2001. He was 12. The entire school grieved his untimely death. The Zuala Cup, an inter-house basketball tournament, was established a year later, to honor and celebrate his life and love for the sport. Over the years, the tournament has become a KISC community event, where people gather to celebrate and honor the lives of those who are no longer with us. This year, the Zuala Cup will take place at Little Angels’ School in Hattiban. Information on the day’s acitivities is on Page 3.

ZUALA PACHUAU (1989-2001)

HE HAS SHOWN GRACE This term the main emphasis in assemblies and around the school has been the value of Grace and how we live under the grace of God. He created the world as a gift for man so that there could be a place of

communion. He created man in his own image to have fellowship. When Adam and Eve disobeyed and ate of the fruit, God offered them grace. He sacrificed an animal to cover Adam and Eve in their nakedness. The shedding of the innocent blood served as the foreshadow of Jesus's suffering on the cross. Throughout the Old Testament, we see how God gave his grace to the whole earth. During this Easter Assembly, we will be a looking back at God's grace seen through history, right up to the time that Jesus suffered on the cross. We thank Him for his sacrifice and celebrate His conquering of death through His resurrection.

EASTER ASSEMBLY 1 P.M. THURSDAY 28 MARCH @ KISC HALL

Grace and peace to you. The SMC is on a journey to live out the values of KISC. I am privileged to be a part of this group who desire to grow in their relationship with the Lord. I’ve been studying Philippians lately and realizing how much Paul calls the churches to “grace and peace.” When we know God’s immeasurable grace, we can live in peace and unity with each other. Please pray for us in leadership as we depend on the Lord to lead and guide us, to give us grace and peace in our relationships. Pray that the Lord would be glorified in all that we do. Angus Douglas, our Project Development Manager, has been working very hard to put together our fundraising strategy to buy a permanent site. We realize the lack of recreational space on campus is a huge need and we are working to come up with a temporary and a long-term solution. Please pray for him and Sharmina (Communications) as they work together to come up with all the necessary materials.

은혜 GRACE Compassion

Blessings, Marcy Knoble SMC Chairperson

A friend of KISC CEO Judith Ellis shared her experience where a taxi driver ripped her off. The friend paid unhappily, but chose to forgive the driver. This was not grace in God’s eyes. Grace is not only paying, but having a heart and desire to bless others, even when they overcharge. Her next time in a taxi, she happily paid the driver saying, “I want to bless you.” This changed the attitude of the driver and the friend in the taxi with her. After hearing this story, Judith was challenged to change her mind to be a blessing to others, to give graciously and to generously ask God how much she should give to those who overcharge. Everything that we go through - adversities, conflicts or anything difficult, we can ask God - “What is it that you want me to learn in this?” We can welcome it as a time to grow more like Him.

TCK IDENTITY The KISC Community would like to thank Michele Phoenix, a former teacher and an international author, for conducting training on TCK (third culture kids) identity. Through sessions with staff, parents and students, Ms. Phoenix helped us identify TCK’s strengths, struggles and needs. She shared important insight on how we can nurture our students and children so that they can grow up to be mighty oaks. The training was also an opportunity for many to reminisce and share about their time as TCK. Here, Katrina Bryant, a KISC Michele Phoenix alumna and parent, talks about growing up as a TCK in Nepal. Katrina moved to Nepal from the United States with her parents in 1989, when she was 8. Even though she was in a new country and new school, she said she felt “normal” because of the international community at KISC. “There was this whole subset of people who were in the same situation that I was in,” she said. “Though we came from different parts of the world, we could connect and bond and I have come to appreciate that more as an adult.” She also said that she enjoyed her time in Nepal very much. “When you grow up here you can either love or choose to be angry at your situation and I just loved it here,” she said. Her ties with the country have brought her The Bryant Family back. She and her husband Corban, along with their two children Joah and Clara, moved to Nepal two months ago. The couple is looking to set up a business here to train and employ those who have been marginalized and oppressed. Katrina has also come full circle in terms of her relationship with KISC. Her son Joah goes to Yr. K here, making her the first former student to have a child also attend KISC. “I think it would be easy to say that I defaulted to KISC but I just love so many things about KISC. I love to see older kids playing with younger kids,” she said. “Also important to me was the high moral values that are instilled here.”

MSA 2013 UPDATE THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to fill out the survey on evaluating our growth for the upcoming MSA inspection. The Year 3 and Year 11 parents especially outdid themselves in providing over 100% response. This means that more than one parent from each family completed the survey. Thanks! The MSA inspection is a time for us, as a community, to reflect on how we are doing and growing. It is beautiful to see how we are in this together, a partnership between you, as families, and us, as staff, to make KISC the best place for all to grow and learn. Together we have accomplished great things since our last inspection and these are reflected in the positive responses to the survey. We offer thanks to Him who has enabled us to fulfill many requirements that MSA considers as qualifications for an excellent school. Some of the areas to praise God for are as follows: • For being a school that follows our mission, vision and values throughout all aspects of school as well as in our relationships with one another. • For having effective communication throughout our relationships as students, staff and parents. • For taking all of God’s blessings and using them to the best of our abilities to enable all within KISC to be safe and healthy. • For staff, events and an education program that reflect our values of love, community, grace, justice and excellence. Of course there are areas that we need to improve and strengthen. A great thing was to see that many of the areas highlighted in the survey revealed areas that we, as a school community, are already targeting to bring to a standard of excellence. For example, the issue of space was highlighted as a need for improvement. In this past year, we have all sought God for a release of that provision. God does know our needs and He delights in providing, so we are continuing to claim land for our future growth. Thank you for joining us in standing in faith for this provision. Another example of an area for continued growth is in the education program itself. We continue to work to improve education for all. A small example of this is that in this coming year we have expanded the options in Year 12/13 to include one new course. We are also offering two existing AS courses at the A level. We have added a number of community service hours for students as a graduation requirement from 2015. If you would like more specific feedback about a comment that you made in the survey then please do contact us by emailing admin@kisc.edu.np. We will identify the most appropriate member of staff to respond. You can access all the results of the survey by going to www.kisc.edu.np/msasurvey Thank you again so much for working with us to achieve our mission, vision, values and passion statement.

DID YOU KNOW? • The main teaching block has 3 exits from the first two floors and 2 from the other floors. • All new staff and new parents agree to support our Mission, Vision, Values and Passion Statement when they join. • All parents were sent a copy of the financial report for the last financial year during Term 2. If you didn’t receive it, email admin@kisc.edu.np to request a copy. • The number of children from mission families currently at KISC is 78%. • Religious Education classes in the Secondary School teach students about a variety of religions and viewpoints to best prepare them for entering the world that God loves so much. We maintain Christ at the centre of all that is taught. • Each class has a parent representing them on the PTA. If you have any suggestions on how to improve KISC, see your PTA representative.
