TERM 4, ISSUE 1 APRIL 25, 2013
UPCOMING EVENTS
GRACE
JUSTICE
Last term, the theme at assemblies and around the school was the value of Grace and how we live under the grace of God. This term also, we will continue to explore God’s grace upon us and ask - how do I offer grace to others as He has done for me? In addition, we will explore the value of justice and how we can participate in restoring God’s goodness in all nations. We will learn about the value of honoring all people and abiding by KISC rules to grow ourselves into living witnesses of Christ’s love.

KISC STUDENTS’ MISSION TRIP TO FAR WEST NEPAL At KISC, we encourage our students and staff to be oaks of righteousness and display the Lord’s splendour in their words and actions. They are also encouraged to use their God-given talents to bring spiritual and physical healing to those in need. During the last term break, a group of seven KISC students, three teachers and a support staff visited Dadeldhura as part of the students’ mission trip to the far west region in Nepal. While in Dadeldhura, the group painted an entire classroom at Ugratara Higher Secondary School, one of KISC EQUIP partner schools. They also painted a mural in the classroom. In other classrooms, they painted all chalkboards as well as some desks and benches. The group also helped with the local children growth monitoring activity conducted by the local hospital staff. They participated in a local

church youth group meeting and also led the children’s Sunday School class. In the hospital, they entertained patients, held babies, painted the post-surgery ward, prayed for patients and donated blood.
KISC HAPPENINGS
The second Inter-school Musical Festival was held at Lincoln School last week. After practicing together on Friday and Saturday, 81 students and 5 staff from KISC, combined with others from The British School and Lincoln School, presented a concert on Sunday afternoon. The total number of participants was 230. The Primary Choir, Secondary Choir and Orchestra each performed separately, then combined to sing and play a magnificent finale of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”. We are thankful to Lincoln School for hosting this event and to the PTAs from each school for their logistical support. This was a fantastic musical experience for all! KISC conducted the Zuala Cup, the inter-house basketball competition, on March 23. The event is organized each year in memory of Zuala Pachuau, a KISC student who died in an accident in 2001. He was 12. Here are a few glimpses of the KISC community event that celebrates the life of Zuala and others who are no longer with us. Congratulations to the Makalu House for winning the tournament.

PTA NOTES The PTA Spring Fair will take place on Sunday May 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you are interested in having a stall, please contact Astrid Smith (nasesmith@gmail.com). Please don’t wait too long with this as the space usually fills up pretty quickly. If you don’t get a reply, please resend your email. Only when you have received an email confirmation, you have signed up officially. Also, if you have items you don’t need anymore, please bring them to the school after May 6. Please be mindful of what you bring. We would like to receive clothes and toys that are complete and whole. If you are donating games, please tape the box shut and put a sticker on it describing the condition of the game (e.g., never used, lightly used, etc).
PRAYER CORNER • Please pray for students as they revise and prepare for forthcoming exams. Pray that they would be focused and disciplined in their studies as well as calm and free from anxiety. • Please continue to pray for the fulfillment of staff needs at KISC. Pray that the Spirit would stir the right people and bring them to KISC. Also, thank God for the 11 staff coming this summer. • Pray that this final term would be a term of “finishing well” for students, staff as well as for families preparing to leave Nepal for home leave or for good. • Let us remember Nepal and its people in our prayers. The country that many of us are here to serve has uncertainty in its future and its people face many hardships. Please pray that Christ would be evident in our lives and through local Nepali Church as an example to others. Please pray that we would be ambassadors of Christ and that we would draw others to faith. Pray for unity among the churches nationwide.

EQUIP UPDATES QUALITY IN THE CLASSROOM CONFERENCE: During the Easter break, the KISC EQUIP team was busy attending the “Quality in the Classroom” conference held at Rato Bangala School, in partnership with the Nepal Department of Education. Many of the 550 delegates attending the training provided by the EQUIP team were thrilled with the quality, fun and practical application that our team Quality in the Classroom Conference logo gave. The conference ended with a Kathmandu Commitment on Quality Education agreed with the Ministry of Education. KISC CEO Judith Ellis said, “It was a privilege to participate in the conference and help write the Kathmandu Commitment and see the desire to bring love, fun, quality and relevant skills to students and teachers in Nepal.” NUWAKOT VISIT PHASE I: Eleven teachers from National Bethel Academy, Trishuli spent a meaningful and fun day playing, singing, writing stories and reflecting on their teaching activities in a training conducted by KISC EQUIP. The training was facilitated by teacher trainers Krishna Bahadur Bohora and Sue Gim from April 17 to 19. Also, a parent seminar with 60 parents was conducted. Highlights of the training included: motivating teachers to get to know their students better and equipping teachers with the concept of using games to teach the four main skills of English language. Prasna, one of the training participants said, “Today’s training is a blessing to me, as I haven’t had such training before. I learnt how to teach children with joy and how to be a model for them. The trainers showed everything with actions. I’m so happy.” ENGLISH TEACHERS’ TRAINING: Two English teachers’ training were conducted in Kathmandu on April 11 and 12. 22 teachers from ICTHUS schools, KISC EQUIP partner schools and other Christian schools in Kathmandu benefitted from the first training conducted at KISC. The second training, benefitting 14 teachers, was conducted at Sringeri School, one of the partner schools of KISC EQUIP.
“
I was attending the training just to show my gratitude to my principal. Training dates were right after completion of a busy schedule in school. We had just finished checking exam papers and preparing report cards. I was really worried that I needed to spend 5 days in training instead of spending time with family. Retrospectively, I find myself a blessed woman for being selected to attend the Early Childhood Training Workshop for pre-primary teachers. This training helped me identify low cost or free materials that can be used in my classroom. My students will experience lots of fun games, songs and activities, which will help in their holistic development. I plan to change sitting arrangements in the classroom to make my students more interactive and collaborative learners. The training helped me to grow from a traditional teacher to a student-friendly teacher. More importantly, it helped me to think about how to become a good mother before I can become a good teacher. I am now encouraged to take teaching as a motherly career.
