For toys and games, please check the content and tape the box shut with a note on the outside stating the condition of the game or toy (new, barely used, etc.) Please deliver the items to KISC Reception. Another way you can help us make the fair a success is by baking. Small plastic bags will be made available at Reception starting next week for wrapping your baked goods. We also need volunteers to help out at stalls, sell tickets, etc. If you would like to help, please stop by Reception to sign up. Lastly, there is still opportunity for you to have your own stall. Please email nasesmith@gmail.com for details and to sign up. Would you like to become part of the fun-filled and active KISC PTA? If you are a parent of a child in year K or 9 next school year or a Nepali parent who would like to contribute to the PTA, please contact your class representative and we will be happy to meet up with you.

COLLEGE CORNER Parents of current Year 11 students should begin to think about whether or not they want their child to take the PSAT exam which will be held at KISC this year. It is recommended that all current Year 11 students who will be in Year 12 at KISC, take the exam. The exam is especially important for students planning to eventually study in the United States or wishing to have the option to do so. Date of 2013 PSAT: October 19 Location: KISC Cost: TBA Yogesh Moktan will be coordinating the exam registration and details as Ted Mecklenburg will be leaving after this term. Any questions about the 2013 PSAT can be directed to Yogesh Moktan or Ted Mecklenburg.

EQUIP UPDATES KISC EQUIP has signed a new partnership agreement with Samaritan’s Purse Canada for Palpa Training Project 2013-14. We are very thankful to the organization for their gernerous support in transforming education in Nepal.

KISC EQUIP provided a two-day English teachers’ training for Kathmandu school teachers on April 11 and 12. 38 teachers from 6 KISC EQUIP partner schools and 3 private Christian schools participated in the training conducted by teacher trainer Sue Gim. She was assisted by teacher trainer Krishna Bohora. Thinking out of the box is always the main challenge for many Nepali teachers. In a typical Nepali classroom, there are many challenges, including regular power cuts and lack of resources for comprehensible English input. Also, traditional lecture style, theoretical

teaching and rote learning is prevalent in many Nepali classrooms. Creative alternatives were A teacher uses his mobile phone to teach presented during the KISC EQUIP training to English songs. enable teachers to rise above the challenges. Highlights of the training included: • Advising teachers to use mobile phones to play English songs and dialogues in the class. • Encouraging them to use English to communicate with students during English lessons. • Introduction of the whole brain teaching method for classroom management. • Use of phonics to read words. As part of KISC EQUIP’s efforts to support teachers in implementing training lessons in their classrooms, Ms. Gim visited many of the teachers’ classrooms. Here is what she said: First when they heard that an EQUIP trainer would visit them to observe their class, they were in disbelief that someone would really show up to check whether they were implementing training lessons or not. I could tell there was a big rush for some of the teachers to make a song poster and flashcards. But it was fantastic to watch them use their mobile phones to teach some songs. I was very happy to see some good rules posters and it was very rewarding to hear their unique version of Class/Yes shouts (a whole brain teaching method). First time, is always hard and difficult. First is always nervous and often it accompanies unwillingness. Even trying out new food for the first time often makes us nervous. Yet, first leads to second and second is the basis for third. So, first can lead to hundred and more. How uneasy it must have been for these teachers to change their familiar ways of teaching and try out new methods for the first time? I am proud of all the teachers I saw during follow-up visits, because willingly or half-forcefully, they stepped up to the first of many changes.
