We are very excited to announce that KISC EQUIP has been awarded US$ 2,000 towards the development of its “Kitchen Garden” project by Horticulture Collaborative Research Support Program at University of California, Davis in United States. In addition to the funding, the Trellis Fund, supported by U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), also includes a graduate student in agricultural sciences visiting Nepal for two weeks to work with the EQUIP team to develop a practical kitchen garden manual. The project seeks to introduce kitchen gardens to more than 30 KISC EQUIP partner schools nationwide. This will empower the schools to train students and staff in simple farming techniques to yield nutritious produce. The initial target of the project will be 3 pilot schools – KISC and Good Shepherd School in Kathmandu; and Bethel English Boarding School in Tansen. KISC staff Kevin Bolis, along with Nepali staff, has been From left, Chakraman Maharjan and Kevin Bolis work in trialing a rooftop kitchen garden at KISC for the the rooftop kitchen garden at KISC. last six months. Good Shepherd is in the process of preparing a rooftop garden with the assistance of Mr. Bolis. Bethel School is eager to include kitchen garden as part of the school’s vocational training. The easy-to-use manual will provide recommendations on land choice, preparation, harvesting, watering, water storage, use of compost, etc. Once the manual is published, it will be included in the training program run by KISC EQUIP. We ask for prayers and support for the success and longevity of the kitchen garden project. Ultimately, we hope to make the program available to any interested school. Last Sunday was the busiest spring fair ever, with around 1,000 people in attendance. We raised around NRs. 1,53,000. Thank you to all the volunteers for your good team spirit. A big thank you to Kent Rogers for organizing a concert, where an amazing array of talent was displayed by instrumentalists, vocalists and dancers.

KISC students and staff part of an award-winning global animation project A global animation project that some KISC students and staff participated last year has been awarded first place in the Youth Animation Class by the Hollywood International Family Film Festival (IFF). “Light up the World” global animation collaboration for the Paralympics London 2012 ran from March to June 2012. The project involved 495 disabled and non-disabled children and young people in 24 schools in 12 countries. They worked in collaboration with 10 disabled and deaf animators and artists, 8 Paralympians, and 2 disabled musicians. Participants explored the values of the Paralympics and created a journey for the Paralympic torch. The journey celebrated its history from the birth at Stoke Mandeville Hospital to London 2012, as well as its hand over to Brazil, where the next Paralympics will be held in 2016. Looking at the values of determination, inspiration, courage and equality, the overseas schools produced drawings, storyboards and music ideas to direct schools in the United Kingdom in the production. This was a remarkable journey for all. Through internet, we were able to connect to all corners of the globe, from the most cosmopolitan to the most rural areas. Please visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLrXH-W_6pk to watch the awardwinning production. The film was made by 10 schools across the South East of England in collaboration with 14 schools across the globe including Germany, France, San Marino, Uganda, Singapore, Nepal, USA, Brazil, Bosnia, Israel and Turkey. KISC students involved in the project were Isaiah Mecklenburg, Aarambh Shrestha, Saurav Joshi, Raydn Weise, Oriarna Willetts, Iona Kempton, Miriam Knoble, Reeda Ismail, Jane Garrett and Bea Cho. KISC teachers, Susie Moore and Chloe Bondeson led the project at the school. KISC EQUIP teacher trainer Annie Brown coordinated and also supported another Kathmandu school’s involvement. Great job everyone!

Science fair contd. from Page 1 The standard was once again very high and the result of many weeks’ hard work. Congratulations especially to those who won prizes, but all participants deserve our praise for their displays. Thank you also to the art department for producing some stunning displays of their interpretation of Science models. To round off the evening, Dr. Chris Smith, assisted by Katie Smith, once again thrilled us with science in action. The highlight of the show was 100+ flames dancing to music. The Science Fair was yet another example of KISC students and staff producing excellent work.

MSA VISIT 2013 Middle States Association (MSA) is our accreditation organization in the United States. We are preparing for an accreditation visit in November. We have an accreditation visit every 7 years. We are delighted to announce the objectives worked out by the planning team as part of the self study. These objectives were formed based on the whole school review conducted in term 3. The objectives have already received provisional approval from MSA and will be the focus of KISC’s improvement over the next 7 years. KISC parents in the planning team are Suraj Dahal (Year K parent), Ramila Karmacharya (Year 3&7 parent and staff member), Angus Douglas (Year 1 & 4 parent and staff member) and Abraham Chun (Year 1 parent and staff member). Objective #1: By 2020, students and staff at KISC will show growth in living out the values contained in the Mission, Vision, Values and Passion Statement. Objective #2: By 2020, students at KISC will demonstrate improved ability to monitor and reflect on their learning in order to achieve their academic potential. Objective #3: By 2020, KISC will have its own permanent, earthquake resistant, building with the combined capacity of 300 primary and secondary students and an additional 60 Transformational Educational College (TEC) undergraduate students. We are currently in the process of identifying improvement measurement tools in each of these areas and planning ways to achieve them. We have formed three teams to carry out each objective. If you would like to play an active part in one of the teams or have any questions or comments about the objectives, please contact Daniel Parnell (daniel@kisc.edu.np) or any parent in the planning team.
