“When I pushed the door open, he was standing there…in a candlelit room with music and roses. It was beautiful and I knew in that moment that this was going to be something I’d never forget. He told me things every girl dreams of hearing and then got down on one knee and opened the box to a custom designed pave princess cut engagement ring. He asked me to be his wife. I was really emotional and it was a perfect moment. “

“For the ceremony, we decided on a fairytale theme where everything would be white with soft tones to make it feel heavenly. We included a lot of florals and sparkle to complete the look. Walking into the room and down the aisle felt like a dream.

For our reception, we went with a contemporary theme with water elements. The room included rich purples, black, white, florals and a lot of bling! It was perfect. A highlight was definitely our custom white dance floor with a monogram created just for us. I was big on personalizing our wedding and this was the finishing touch.

A UNIQUE IDEA: Indy and Neesha had a painter create the unique canvases pictured below to capture the wedding of their dreams. The paintings were displayed just outside of their reception hall for guests to admire.

We went to the lakeshore in Oakville where there was a comic painter who asked if he could practice on us. As we were waiting he drew Indy and I, but as he went to hand me the painting, he switched it with another picture previously done of Indy on his knee proposing! As I looked up Indy was already on his knee with the ring in his hand. He said the most beautiful things and I was completely in shock!

Reshma and Sachin spent the week at the RIU Negril and chose The Spa Retreat as the venue for their wedding and reception. The highlights of their wedding week in Jamaica included: taking their guests on a private catamaran to begin the celebrations, having a beautifully decorated sangeet on the beach, the amazing Jamaican Indian fusion cuisine prepared by the chefs at the Blue Mahoe Restaurant at the Spa Retreat. Guests enjoyed dancing the night away under the stars and ending the evening by releasing lanterns into the sky. It truly was a dream come true! She’s from Canada, he’s from California, they met in Panama....and got married in Jamaica! Having met in a tropical country and having a love for travel, beaches and the sun, the couple decided to have a small wedding in Negril, Jamaica where they could be married under the sun, overlooking the ocean alongside their close family and friends.

We knew that we wanted a fusion wedding that would represent both our Gujarati and Punjabi roots. Mission successful! We managed to take our guests on a ride from a traditional Garba and Dandia night to Jago and Boliyan at the reception, it was absolutely amazing!

When I opened my eyes, I saw the Toronto skyline around me and Harinder on his knees below me. There was a blue rose on the table beside us, which just made everything complete. It was beyond perfect! As he spoke his heart, I couldn’t stop thinking how surreal it all was. Shocked and filled with emotion, I said “OMG” and then said yes!

[e-SHOOT STYLE] “Since we are both lovers of fashion and all things contemporary, we thought that a ‘high fashion’ type e-shoot would be the perfect reflection of our personal style.”

Shelly & Rajiv ‘Big City Style’

PHOTOS BY: ELEMENTS PHOTOGRAPHY

The vision for our e-shoot was simplewe wanted to steer clear of the ‘typical’ engagement shoots consisting of a park, or bench, or walking down the street with snapshots of the couple. Since we are both lovers of fashion and all things contemporary, we thought that a ‘high fashion’ type engagement shoot at a trendy and upscale venue like the Thompson Hotel would be perfect for us! The end result, in our view is that it turned out to be just that; we have had many friends and family comment that it looks like a fashion spread out of a high end magazine! Both of our ‘Type A’ personalities combined with the fact that we are both perfectionists definitely influenced the look and feel of the shoot. We love the view of the CN Tower in the backgound ... You can’t get that view of Toronto just anywhere and the weather was absolutely perfect that day!!

[REAL-LIFE KISMET]

“I arrived at the waterfront and Kartik was there waiting for me with roses. We walked along the harbourfront, he got down on one knee and the rest is, as we say, history.”

Gemma & Kartik June 22nd, 2013

PHOTOS BY: FIVE RIVERS STUDIO

Planning our wedding was very enjoyable and absolutely beautiful! We had an outdoor ceremony at West River Convention Centre where the greenery is so lush in the summer months. Our decor tied the colour of our outfits to our drapery to even the jai mala’s. Perhaps the most memorable event at our wedding was that it rained heavily throughout the ceremony, hindering many of our plans. Although people deem it a blessing, most brides would hope for sunny dry skies. I will never forget that moment of making my entrance and seeing the downpour, wondering not only how but if the ceremony would proceed. Walking down the aisle, I saw a sea of faces, drenched to the core but in great spirits cheering for us to go on. Kartik and I will never forget the incredible support of all our family and friends which helped to remind us that whether or not things go perfectly on your big day, what matters most of all, is the union of two people, two friends, one love.

Style Profile SATYA PAUL CANADA Satya Paul is a brand that has become synonymous with high fashion, elegance and the modern South Asian Woman. What makes Satya Paul so unique when compared to other designer brands? Satya Paul is a premier designer label synonymous with signature prints, evocatively feminine designs and timeless style that has established itself as a global brand, unhindered by national boundaries. Satya Paul has achieved an inimitable style. The look is distinguished and identifiable on the street. Every collection centers around a fashion-forward theme, keeping the brand abreast of each season’s trends and looks.

Satya Paul sets its own trends – our spring/summer line up is a fusion of the old and the new with an asian inspired theme – SUMIE and CRYSTAL SUNSET – both of which are an interplay of colour, shine and graphics. The colours are vibrant and electric – neon greens, rich deep pinks and shimmery reds, majestic oranges and the list goes on.

The brand caters to the confident, modern, professional woman of any age. It takes our ethnicity and molds it into the very diverse and multi-cultural world we live in, speaking to the ethnic in all of us but especially to the fusion that we all strive to achieve and live by in the modern world. Different is definitely IN!

While Satya Paul is synonymous with sarees, the line has expanded to include anarkalis, suits, lenghas, lengha sarees and gowns. Still, I’d have to say the saree remains the highest sought after today. Historically, the saree has been seen as highly traditional but with much sex appeal. Today, the saree is seen as much more. It is seen as a new age ethnic gown that allows the modern woman to strike that fine balance between our two cultures while continuing to embrace and relish our rich Indian heritage. This fusion has led to more and more fascination with the saree most especially as we explore the numerous fabulous modern and non-traditional ways to wear the saree and/or accessorize and pair up with.

Fashion is always changing and Satya Paul is a brand that always manages to stay ahead of the times. Can you share with us some of the evolution of the Satya Paul brand over the years - where it started from and where it is today in terms of the trends and styles?

The saree is seen today in a completely different light – no longer the traditional dress of our ancestors, the saree today can grace any modern day event. The look and feel of the saree has evolved and will continue to epitomise the best of both our cultures. Being synonymous with bold and exquisite style, colour and prints

Evolution of the SATYA PAUL Saree

The ‘Trouser’ Saree (AW’02): Hand painted fabric was draped over structured trousers to ensure comfort for the wearer. Textile fabrications were that of confident brush strokes in order to compliment the modern drape.

The ‘Hexivaram’ Saree (Bridal Collection, 2009): This collection took inspiration from the ornate Kanjivarams of South India, which were recreated through high-quality digital prints on fine silks.

The ‘Churidaar’ Saree (AW’10): was divided into an embellished churidaar with a pre-pleated fall. Perfect for an active wedding calendar, the churidaar Saree became an ideal outfit for cocktail evenings.

The ‘Suspender’ Saree (AW’13): was designed to celebrate the brand’s ideal muse – bold, flirtatious, fun, opinionated & comfortable in her skin. Divided palazzos of the Suspender Saree eases movement and the unstitched pallu can be styled as a stole.

each of our creations is a timeless piece of elegance and flair. The brand stands for everything that a confident woman is – it stands for an expression of personal style through our clothes and designs. Each Satya Paul piece is carefully crafted to add that glamour and glitz to today’s confident woman and her life. A Satya Paul piece is a ‘must have’; a collectors item if you will. Various celebrities have worked with Satya Paul over the past few years, namely Lisa Ray who we greatly admire and most recently Masaba Gupta to create a very unique line. What is the inspiration behind some of these lines? Lisa Ray is an internationally acclaimed and award winning actress, model, host and cancer advocate who was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma wore a custom-made Satya Paul georgette sari highlighted with traditional gota-patti work on her wedding day. “Living with Multiple Myeloma, I have learned that the progress of the human spirit doesn’t stop with obstacles and challenging circumstances. I want to share my message of victory and love with others, so I am partnering with Satya Paul to present a line of saris that capture the intimate and celebratory emotions of my wedding. The collection is also themed around universal qualities that helped me to rise above, like Phoenix Rising, Hope and Faith,” said Ray. A portion of the sales from this collection in Canada will benefit the Molly and David Bloom Chair in Multiple Myeloma Research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. And, more exciting news for us! Masaba Actress Lisa Ray in Satya Paul HOPE Saree Gupta, the extremely talented and inspirational designer in her own right is now at the helm of Satya Paul’s design team. Masaba’s inspiration .... ‘I would give credit to my mixed cultural heritage and roots. I’ve learnt a lot from my mother, she loves customizing and personalizing everything she buys and wears. Hence i never wanted to stick to being strictly traditional indian or western .I try to incorporate a contemporary look and feel , at the same time use fabrics and drapes from across different cultures of India. As young designers it is important to focus on India. At the same time we don’t have to go all ethnic and overdo the gota and zardosi! There is so much we can do with weaves and also village embroideries. I am one of the few young designers to do saris, albeit with pockets! That’s the thing about my clothes — they are so ageversatile. A mom and daughter can walk into my store and pick up things from the same collection.’ Masaba’s dream, ‘to create a shiny new appeal, lure a younger au-

dience into seeing the sari as more than just a chance to play dressup during sangeet season.’ Satya Paul is a brand that is sought out all over the globe and I’m happy to say that after many years of waiting we finally have a Satya Paul showroom here in Canada! How do the pieces showcased here in Canada differ from the ones we might see in India? In November 2012, Satya Paul Canada opened its first flagship store in Toronto. The 1,250 square footstore carries an extensive range of Satya Paul products which includes saris in vibrant crepes, chiffons and georgettes. The collection also includes anarkalis, salwar suits, blouses, kurtis, kaftans, scarves, stoles, bags and clutches as well as a men’s accessories line that include ties, cufflinks, pocket squares and tie boxes. The bridal collection by Satya Paul is also available at the Toronto store. This line reflects an interplay of rich fabrics, fine embroidery and embellishments that come together to create the perfect trousseau. The ensembles, with elaborate embroidery such as zardozi, patchwork, appliqué, are exclusive to Satya Paul Canada. The collections showcased in North America are geared for our market – the North American sensibility as well as climate and season. “Satya” by Satya Paul is a brand new collection especially designed and created for North America. This line is broad based with our unique prints and colours at the forefront. The pieces are easy to wear, elegant yet fun and sassy and come with print highlights and embellished blouses. This line includes sarees, ready made blouses and anarkalis. Now available in Canada, this line boasts a very attractive price points that will appeal to all ages and budgets.

[LAST LOOK] We’re looking for newly married or engaged couples!

Have you got your copy of the KISMET LOOK BOOK?

“I arrived at the waterfront and Kartik was there waiting for me with roses. We walked along the harbourfront, he got down on one knee and the rest is, as we say, history.”
