Memories of MEXICO

“First I am sorry for my English...I saw in your magazine articles about places like England and other countries and it is good that people know places that maybe they never visit. Many people do not know México…I have met a lot of people who think it is all dirt and drugs and poor people and agave. There are a lot of that there, but there is much more. I met a man from here in the grocery store that Mexicans go to but he is American...”(tip from KD reader David G.)

W

hen NACOM made the decision to combine its Griffin and El Paso operations and outsource them to Durango, Chad Coggin, a Griffin native, spent the next two years in Durango and the surrounding area, helping the company make the transition. Chad already had positive preconceptions about Mexico, mostly from a business trip he’d made to Nuevo Casas Grandes two years earlier, where there had been a general feeling of fear among his compatriots. Chad relates, “Everyone from Corporate was locked up in the hotel, afraid to venture out. A lady who worked in my department and I decided to go out and explore. If we saw something interesting, we’d just go in. Everyone thought we were nuts, but we had a great time!” Chad acknowledges that we tend to buy into what we’ve heard on the news about Mexico. Then we generalize. ‘Everyone’s at risk of being shot or kidnapped,’ we think. But this fear, Chad asserts, is mainly due to our lack of firsthand knowledge. If someone unfamiliar with the U.S. heard only the news of crime in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., or Los Angeles, for example, they would likely come to the conclusion that the United States is a dangerous place. However, as in Durango, such dangers are, for the most part, quite distanced from the day-to-day lives of most people.

Photos by Chad Coggin 4

Chad invited friends and family to visit him during his time in Durango, but only his father, uncle, and cousin actually took him up on it. The rest were ( 7 7 0) 412 - 0 4 41

either afraid (or didn’t have the disposable income). So Chad began to create a photo chronicle of his experience there, which he later organized into a book. “First of all, I did it to help my friends and family understand what they’d missed,” says Chad. As writer Aldous Huxley once observed, “To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” Chad’s time in Mexico caused him to question some of his assumptions. He explains, “I used to think that people came here because they wanted our standard of living. But in talking to people in Mexico, I didn’t find that to be true. Most of the people wanted nothing to do with moving here.” In general, the people Chad met either wanted to come the U.S. just to shop and return, or if they did have to come here because of extreme poverty, they considered the move a hardship, largely due to separation from their families and the trappings of their everyday lives. Chad could relate to those feelings after having been in Mexico for two and a half years. “I missed the U.S. as well, and it helped me understand how people moving here must feel. As much as I liked Mexico, I wouldn’t give up my home here, and I imagine many

(though certainly not all) emigrating Mexicans feel the same. Nobody’s saying, ‘outlet malls are more important to me than my family!’ and then making a mad rush for the border.” Chad realized that many Mexican emigrants were likely homesick, and he wondered if some of them might like a copy of the book of emotive photos he’d created for his own family. He began to give away copies of his book, but also to extend the same sort of warm hospitality that he’d been offered throughout his stay in Durango. The book was met with far more enthusiasm and gratitude than Chad ever expected, as evidenced by David G’s note quoted at the outset. Chad was right – emigrants are often homesick. What do they miss? Aside from Mexico’s astonishing beauty and a history that far outdates (and surprisingly informs) our own, the spirit of community in Mexico thrives in a way that has become rare in the U.S. The majority

of people have very little in a material way, but if they have two tortillas, they will insist you take one of them. If someone is making enchiladas, they make enough for the old woman with arthritis three doors down. And they can teach us a thing or two about hospitality. In Durango, it was not unusual for Chad to be summoned from the sidewalk to join a private party of strangers. “Try just walking in off the street into a private party here,” says Chad. “Grab a beer, and see how far you get.” Children run in and out of all the houses on the street and are admonished by any adult present. A trip to the market can easily take all afternoon – everyone stops to talk. Entire families meet in the plazas at night and listen to music, laugh, and relax from the day’s hard work. Time is not nearly as important in Mexico, to the chagrin of many an expat…until they get used to it and, eventually, embrace it.

James Jenkins James grew up in Bonaire GA, where he started his first job with Piggly Wiggly of Warner Robbins in 1972. Almost 40 years later, James is still with “The Pigg.” In 1984, Piggly Wiggly brought James to Griffin, where he met his wife, Lisa. James and Lisa were married and later moved to Newnan and Macon, then back to Griffin in 1991, where they settled to raise their many children (8 boys and 4 girls)! In 1993, the Piggly Wiggly of Griffin moved from their location at Roses shopping center to where they are today, and although the store name changed to Bruno’s, then Southern Family Markets, then back to Piggly Wiggly, the owners remained the same throughout, and James remained manager. Six months after the move, a plane crashed into the old Piggly Wiggly building. Luckily, the building was vacant! “I’ve lived in many places, but enjoy Griffin the most because of its hometown feeling and friendly atmosphere,” says James. “Here you can see how much the community cares for each other. We support each other. We give back to the community, and that is what makes this town thrive.” In addition to managing the Piggly Wiggly, James sells Primo ceramic grills. Stop by Piggly Wiggly on Friday and Saturday for lunch and catch James grilling up some tasty ribs on his Primo outside the store. 816 South Hill Street | Griffin, GA 30224-4842 | 770-229-1343

Tim Shepherd and his son Patrick Shepherd are proud to announce the opening of their new law office located at 612 West Taylor Street in Griffin. Tim and Patrick believe that small firms with small town values can bring clients big results without having to resort to the tactics that give lawyers such a bad reputation. “Many of our clients and colleagues are people we regularly see outside of the office, so it is important to not only work aggressively to get clients the results they want, but also to do it in a way that we can be proud of at the end of the day. We often have people who were on the other side of cases in the past come in and hire us for their new legal needs,” says Tim. “That lets you know you did your job well.” Tim grew up in Griffin, graduated from Griffin High School in 1975 and returned to Griffin in 1984 after earning his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Georgia. He and his wife, Beth, have been married 29 years, and they have three sons: Patrick, Eric, and Alec. During his nearly 28 years of practicing in Griffin, Tim has assisted hundreds of clients with a wide variety of legal needs, including representing the Griffin-Spalding County School System for over 14 years. Patrick also grew up in Griffin and graduated from Griffin High School in 2001. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 2005 and went on to earn his law degree from Mercer University in 2009. After being admitted to the state bar in November of 2009, Patrick joined Tim in his practice and helps clients in a variety of legal matters. Lisa & Jay Davison Jay Davison lived in Florida several years as a teenager, where he had his first taste of coastal living. Many years later, he and his wife Lisa decided they wanted to open their own restaurant, but they weren’t sure what kind. One evening, Jay’s brother had a low country boil at his house and was complaining that he’d driven all over Thomaston trying to find fresh seafood, until finally someone said “Son, you’re gonna have to run to Florida to get that.” Jay and Lisa saw there was a need, and began thinking. In the meantime, Jay took several fishing trips to Florida and brought back coolers full of fresh fish for his family and friends. More and more people began asking Jay for fish, so in March 2003, Jay purchased an old 1940s service station building in Thomaston and opened The Fish Peddler fresh fish market. Jay drove to Florida once a week with three large coolers and sold his fish two days a week, while still working at Home Depot. As his clientele grew, so did the interest in a local seafood restaurant. “Most people wanted to buy their fish cooked,” Jay says. So in October, The Fish Peddler restaurant opened for business. Jay knew how to get the fish and what kind of fish to get, and Lisa had managed a restaurant and knew how to run that part of the business. Section by section, they expanded farther into the building as they grew. The Fish Peddler Restaurant sells a variety of seafood, both grilled and steamed, with an assortment of sides. Beer and wine is also available in the restaurant, and fresh fish is still available for purchase by the pound. 1700 Hwy 19 North | Thomaston | 706-648-6616 | Thursday 11am-9pm Friday and Saturday 11am-10pm

Dream Catcher

Assisted Living Community

It is thought to be the Chippewa tribe that created a web-like object trimmed with beads and feathers known as the Dream Catcher. It’s purpose was to catch all dreams that floated in the night air through their homes and allow only the good dreams to pass through. Marge McNaught and L.W. Williamson adopted this metaphor for her assisted living home communities, Dream Catcher Farm, Dream Catcher in the Woods, and a proposed third community, located on 18 acres, just three miles northeast of Jackson.

In 1998, Marge and her husband, L.W. (“Willie”) were faced with finding a long-term care home for their 20-year-old son, Chip, who was disabled when struck by a car at the age of 6. They wanted a clean family atmosphere where the residents were well taken care of with respect and love. Unable to find exactly what they wanted, they built what they thought it should be. Originally started for their son, the dream was born and continues today, after his death, in his memory. Willie and Marge worked very hard to create and preserve the peace and quiet offered by this country setting. Dream Catcher offers a peaceful and serene country farm atmosphere that includes horses, a barn, lots of woods and trails, and even chickens that supply fresh eggs. Residents plant a vegetable garden each year, although the local deer often get first pick of the crop! Dream Catcher’s residents appreciate living in this loving and caring environment where they enjoy recreational activities, hobbies, quiet nature walks or just relaxing in their peaceful surroundings. The superior 24-hour care at Dream Catcher includes medication supervision, three home-cooked meals and two snacks daily from a kitchen that never closes, laundry and housekeeping, and transportation arranged for shopping, errands, and medical appointments. Hospice care may be arranged, if the need arises. Accommodation choices include private and semiprivate rooms, as well as one-bedroom suites, all fully furnished if needed, and equipped with private telephones and cable TV. The communities offer a unique family lifestyle with large dining areas, sunrooms, living rooms, library, and even onsite beauty salons. “We want our residents to realize when they walk through our doors, that this is the beginning of a new chapter in their life,” says Marge. “A chapter the staff of Dream Catcher Assisted Living Communities would like to share with them. They deserve the best.” Drop by anytime to visit Dream Catcher Communities at 286 Four Points Road (Marge and Willie would love to show you around), or they can be reached by phone at 770-775-2794.

H

and-painted pinstriping dates back to Roman times when it was used to decorate chariots. Later, pinstriping appeared on horse-drawn carriages and, beginning in the late 19th century, automobiles. From the 20th century, elaborate striping and scrollwork found great popularity with truckers, and finally became a fixture of American pop culture with the arrival of famous pinstrip- ers Von Dutch, his pupil, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, and others. Today, hand-painted striping survives with a handful of artists who are dedicated to keeping the art alive. Rob Cochrane grew up in Buffalo, NY with his father a career worker at General Motors. He moved to Gwinnett County in 1993 and became part of a small group of apprentices who worked 12-14-hour days on the lot in order to master the techniques necessary to stripe vehicles. At night, Rob would soak his swollen knuckles and burned fingertips in ice water, but the hard work and discomfort finally paid off. “It took about four months before I could leave a stripe on the car and not have to wipe it off,” Rob says, but once he perfected the technique, he could stripe anything. Rob managed his own successful striping business for 15 years – matching stripes on body shop cars, doing resto- ration striping on classic cars, striping new cars on the lot for Gwinnett Place Honda and other mega-dealerships, and custom striping on luxury cars such as Bentleys and Rolls Royces. His work took him all over the state, with weekly trips to South Carolina to stripe cars at Piedmont Honda in Anderson. Post-911, fewer cars were coming off the assembly line and even fewer with factory stripes. Dealerships were cutting costs, and people were deciding they could live with that dent in the passenger-side door. It soon became apparent that striping was no longer the thriving industry that it was in decades past. 34

So Rob laid down his brush and began working at the Griffin Lowe’s to help pay the bills. However, striping was now in Rob’s blood. He can identify a painted stripe from across a parking lot, and, if it was striped in metro Atlanta, he can tell you who painted it. In recent years, there has been a return to more nostalgic styles of automobiles (Mustang, Camaro, Thunderbird, Dodge trucks, etc.), motorcycles, and touring bicycles. With those throwback styles has come a new wave of interest in hand-painted design. These days, Rob is keeping his talents close to home by doing freelance work and providing custom striping for Blue Moon Bicycles in Griffin. Also, as industry has given way to technology, Rob has created new opportunities to merge an ancient art with the latest gadgetry. He began doing hand-painted designs on smart-phone cases for friends and family. His designs were immediately noticed by others, and Rob began getting requests for company logos and other customized designs. This new venture has provided more important opportuni- ties, as well. Most recently, Rob has created a series of smart-phone case designs as a Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure fundraising item, donating a large portion of the proceeds to one of the competing teams. For your one-of-a-kind smart-phone case or laptop cover, or for custom striping on your car, truck, motorcycle or bike, give Rob a call at 404.775.6599 or check out more designs on his Facebook page: Pinstriping by Rob.

hen Lauren-Ashley’s father, Mark Redmond, approached me last winter about designing an album cover for his daughter’s Country music debut, I didn’t quite know what to expect. During our meeting that afternoon, Mark said, “Hey, my daughter Lauren is recording some tracks downtown with Trey Roth, and we’d like to put out an EP in a couple of months. Aren’t you a graphics person? Can you design something for us? Being an avid music fan, I responded with interest, “Do you have anything I can listen to? Mark grabbed his cell phone, opened a video, and said, “This is sort of rough, but you can hear where it’s going. The audio was distorted coming through the phone speakers, so he suggested we might pull up his email because he had an audio track there. The next thing I knew, Mark culled a video clip from the studio, and hit “play. The clip was blurry but exciting. As the camera panned, I could see recording equipment scattered about; Lauren sat anxiously behind a microphone, surrounded by an army of guitars and electronics. The first couple of seconds into the song, I felt a calm come over me. “This is really good! This is Nashville-good, I thought to myself. Mark smiled back at me as I reassured him, “She’s really got something! I’m betting Lauren has been singing effortlessly since she was a little girl. My first reaction when I heard her voice was, “This girl is ready for radio—like right now! She likes to write songs too. Lauren wrote the second track on her EP, “Cold November, with her sister Haley and co-wrote a couple of other tracks as well. Back in the days of Johnny

w w w.k it chendr aw er.net

Cash, Kris Kristofferson, and the like, singers wrote songs about what life threw at them with each passing moment. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen so much anymore. Most importantly, Lauren has really good instincts. Each time I spoke with her on the phone or exchanged emails with her, she knew exactly what she wanted in terms of packaging, marketing, and her overall image. Lauren cut six tracks from those studio recordings for her first EP, but when she walked on stage in Griffin, Ga. for her CD release party in May, she rifled through several other tunes before delving into her own music. Dynamic, rocking covers such as Heidi Newfield’s “Johnny & June (an homage to Johnny and June Carter Cash) and Carrie Underwood’s “Last Name — songs I wasn’t familiar with at the time, but seemed to fit perfectly with her pure, Southern tone. The band suited her well and took liberties to drive a rock-edge to the songs. There was a lot of energy in the room that night, the majority of which was generated by the 19-year-old at center stage. She found her footing early, and brought the crowd into each song she sang with passion. As I drove home from my first Lauren-Ashley show, a thought came to my mind. “Did I just witness a star being born tonight? Predicting success in the music industry is difficult. There are so many factors besides a person’s voice that go into a winning package. Record companies often claim to have the Midas touch, but they fall flat much of the time. It is especially difficult to spot talent at such an early stage of a career, when there’s no momentum or chatter yet. Lauren and her new band put on a great show that night, but will some of these new records eventually reach the Country radio rotation? It’s anybody’s guess. Her family has made every effort to offer Lauren the opportunity to make it in the music business. As Mark told me when we first spoke, “We believe in her, and we want to do everything at the highest level possible. Her family’s love and support, coupled with her innate talent, have given Lauren the opportunity to share her gift with the world. When all of their dreams come to fruition, you will without a doubt find a proud community cheering her on from the audience.

WHAT OUR READERS THINK: Scott S.: I will miss them greatly. My son has cancer and they were big supporters of childhood cancer. Met them and very nice and humble guys. Chris L.: Attendance = $$. $$= Team stays in Atlanta. Matt N.: It has nothing to do with fan support. When the old owners, Turner and Time Warner owned the team, we had great attendance. Once the horrific Atlanta Spirit took over, they got rid of superstar play- ers, slashed payroll to the top bottom 5 in the league. In 11 years, they had 1 winning season. Don’t blame the fans for this. Everybody who has a clue about hockey knows the blame lies first on the owners. Sam G.: I say bring back a minor league team. I used to go to 15-20 Knights games a year and atten- dance was decent. As much as I love hockey, Atlanta is not a hockey town, especially when the team stinks. Put a winner out there and people will go check it out.

SQUASH CASSEROLE WITH GREEN CHILES INGREDIENTS 4 c. yellow squash, chopped into thin rings 1 large onion, either Vidalia or yellow (approx. 1 1/2 - 2 cups), chopped 1 carrot, shredded 5 oz can whole water chestnuts, drained and diced (optional) 2 4-oz cans fire roasted diced green chiles (optional) 2 cups Pepperidge Farm stuffing mix, either Herb Seasoned or Cornbread 2 c. sharp cheddar cheese, shredded 3/4 c. mayonnaise salt and pepper, 1/4 tsp. each 1/2 c. sour cream INSTRUCTIONS Prepare ingredients: Pre-heat oven to 350F. Lightly steam squash and onion until halfway cooked. Add carrots and steam one more minute. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly. In a large bowl, combine water chestnuts, chiles, 1 c. stuffing mix, 1 c. cheese, mayonnaise and salt and pepper, stir togeth- er. Combine with squash mixture and mix well. Gently fold in sour cream. To assemble casserole: In a 3 quart casserole dish, pour 1/2 c. stuffing mix, or just enough to cover the bottom. Add squash mixture and spread out to fill dish. Top with remaining 1 c. cheese, and finally sprinkle remaining 1/2 c. stuffing mix over top of casserole. Bake 30 minutes.

PEACH LASSI / FROZEN YOGURT INGREDIENTS 1 quart whole milk or lowfat plain yogurt 2 c. very ripe, fresh peaches, plus 1 to 2 additional peaches (to taste) Minimal stevia or sugar, to taste (very optional) INSTRUCTIONS Place yogurt in a mesh sieve or cheesecloth, cover and allow to drain (refrigerated) for approx. 2 hours. The yogurt will lose about 1 1/2 c. of liquid, which may be discarded. Peel the peaches, remove the pits and chop into chunks. Place peaches pieces into a blender, topped by yogurt. Blend thoroughly. Taste. If should be tart, but if it needs a little sweetening, add a small amount and blend again. Chill 30 minutes to 2 hours. Option 1: Peach Lassi. Pour and Drink! This is a popular Indian style yogurt beverage. Option 2: Peach Frozen Yogurt. Pour into an ice cream maker and process according to instructions until thickened, 20-35 minutes. When yogurt begins to freeze and thicken, peel another peach and chop into very small pieces, approximately the size of corn kernels, add to the yogurt. When yogurt is ready, serve immediately! Top with more peaches, if desired. Yield: 4 Servings

Note: This recipe is a good traditional squash casserole even without the chiles (flavor) or water chestnuts (crunch).

Save your local economy...

three stores at a time.

the project

Think about which three independently owned businesses you’d miss most if they were gone. Stop in and say hello. Pick up a little something that will make someone smile. Your contribution is what keeps those businesses around. If just half the employed U.S. population spent $50 each month in independently owned businesses, their purchases would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue.* Imagine the positive impact if 3/4 of the employed population did that.

For every $100 spent in independently owned stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays here. Spend it online and nothing comes home. The number of people it takes to start the trend...you.
