eird lights in the sky! Football-shaped aircraft! Loud thuds in the night! Steven Spielberg’s next summer blockbuster? Nope. Georgia, in the autumn of 1973. It is perhaps not commonly known or remembered, but Georgians bore witness to an unprecedented number of unexplained phenomena over the brief period of August 30, 1973 to October 18, 1973. Occurrences such as strange lights, vehicles being pursued, and airborne acrobatics beyond human capabilities were observed by hundreds of witnesses across the state, including law enIRUFHPHQW RIÀFHUV DQG ÀUHPHQ 2QH RI WKH EHVW GRFXPHQWHG incidents, and one with physical evidence, occurred in 2UFKDUG +LOO MXVW D IHZ PLOHV VRXWK RI *ULIÀQ On September 10, 1973, a retired gentleman was enjoying the afternoon in his yard on Swint Road when he observed something fall from the sky. The gold-colored object, described as either spherical or egg-shaped, appeared to descend in a controlled, intelligent manner. The object contacted the ground and generated white smoke. The impact was unusual in that neither a crater nor sound was produced. According to the witness, the object ascended just moments after landing. That witness was my paternal grandfather, Ress Clanton. When he related this story to me nearly 11 years later, I could still see the physical evidence on the ground near the Orchard Hill water tower. At 7 years old, I tried to impress him with my obvious solution to the mystery – a meteor strike. The problem with that explanation is that meteors usually leave craters upon impact and generally do not UHVXPH à LJKW DIWHU LPSDFW My grandfather had reported the incident to the Spalding County Sheriff’s department immediately after it happened. Meanwhile, a member of the

growing crowd around the site had the presence of mind to call the Experiment Station. This seemed the logical thing to do, considering the facility’s extensive research on such things as tomatoes. And grass. The head of the Agronomy Department, Dr. O.E. Anderson, responded and, fortunately for local history, was actually the right man to collect, examine, and document the available evidence. When Dr. Anderson arrived, almost two and half hours after my grandfather witnessed the object’s descent, the ground was still smoldering. Anderson estimated that its temperature was still close to 300 degrees, far too elevated to be FDXVHG E\ D VLPSOH JUDVV ÀUH +H UHFRYHUHG D VPDOO SLHFH RI molten slag from ground and collected soil samples from the impact site and two other nearby sites for comparison. After two separate interviews with my grandfather, Anderson told the media he felt the account of the incident was credible. The analysis of the evidence indicated that hydrocarbons were not present, which ruled out petroleum products as a source for ignition. Magnesium and strontium in the soil were at normal levels, thus also ruling out ignition by signal à DUH +RZHYHU FRSSHU ZDV SUHVHQW LQ WKH VRLO DW WKH LPSDFW site. Its concentration was 43,050 parts per trillion which was 2,000 times greater than copper levels in the control samples. Interestingly, the copper level in the same soil just 30 feet away was 7.4 parts per trillion. Also, chromium levels were 200 times higher at the impact site. And unlike PHWHRU VWULNHV RU UHWXUQLQJ VSDFH GHEULV QR FUDWHU RU VLJQLÀcant detritus remained at the point of impact. Dr. Anderson reached the conclusion that the evidence supported the observations of my grandfather. My grandfather was vindicated, but he scoffed at notions of alien contact. He applied his limited education, which mostly centered on faith-based teachings and agriculture, to his experience. Interestingly enough, the incident in Orchard Hill had a sister incident which occurred on September 14, 1973, in Brooks. Roy Lawhorn and his daughter, Donna, were awakened in the early morning hours by a bright light and cacophony of noise similar to a swarm of locusts. Mr. Lawhorn observed an illuminated object near his house that appeared and behaved just as the one in Orchard Hill. However, he interpreted it as a threat to his home and chose a more aggressive response than my grandfather. Mr. Lawhorn shot at it three or four times, then watched as it disappeared into the ground. A charred spot was left on the dirt road near his house, but Dr. Anderson’s analysis of this site revealed nothing unusual. 5HSRUWV RI 8)2V LQ WKH *ULIĂ€Q DUHD FRQWLQXHG GXULQJ ZKDW author Jim Miles describes in his book, Weird Georgia, as the “Clash of ‘73.â€? At least four more incidents occurred following the Orchard Hill and Brooks sightings. There were the usual explanations involving clouds, hot air

balloons, etc. Yet they still do not explain every incident, especially our local ones. The incidents were documented by various media outlets around the U.S., and I even recall my grandfather having a translated copy of a Japanese article covering his incident. If it were not for Mr. Miles’ painstaking research, the incidents would be on their way to being forgotten. His book, written 11 years ago, has preserved these stories for younger generations. Do I believe in UFOs? I really don’t know. I do know that something happened in Orchard Hill that day. Besides my grandfather’s consistent account of his observations, there is also Dr. Anderson’s soil analysis that proves that something happened there in 1973. During the same period across Georgia, there were hundreds of witnesses, most of whom were respectable and credible, who observed strange occurrences. I cannot say that I believe in otherworldly visitors, but neither can I deny their possibility. Like others, I wonder if I would want to know the truth. As Albert Einstein said, “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. So is a lot.�

he moment I met Sunny Korman, I felt like I was instantly in the company of an old friend. She is an energetic, endearing woman never at a loss for a good story. From the moment I stepped into her 130-yearold farmhouse, she was welcoming and warm, but when we realized her mother and I shared the same alma mater – Agnes Scott College in Decatur – the bond had been formed. Sunny is the adopted daughter of Charles and Virginia Steele of Decatur and Atlanta. Charles was from a rather prominent family, his father was a congressman, and Virginia was born in Jamaica. They were married for nearly 60 years and died within three months of one another, and their relationship is one of the things that has shaped the way Sunny views the world. Her parents ran a Baskin-Robbins ice cream shop in Atlanta, and her mother also was an extremely vocal pro-life activist. She was even arrested numerous times because of her efforts, and Virginia might be one of the reasons people consider Sunny a bit of a “rabble rouser.” Just like her mother, Sunny speaks her piece and doesn’t back down. Sunny lives between Barnesville and Zebulon on a 60-acre horse ranch she calls Gymkhana. She found the name Gymkhana in an old book of her grandmother’s about riding. The word means “a meeting of horsemen and horsewomen of all ages to engage in mounted games and pleasure.” Sunny’s love and knowledge of horses is apparent in everything about her, from her home to the way she carries herself. w w w.k it chendr aw er.net

Blackjack When she was 10, her mother told her she was adopted, and she struggled with that for about three years. Then at 13, she decided it would help to have a horse. Her mother rode roses and her uncle owned horses, and naturally she wanted her own. So, her parents bought her horse named Blackjack for her 13th birthday, but her dad didn’t just give the horse to her. “I had to earn it,” Sunny explains. Her father paid for the riding lessons, but she had to get a job at the stable to pay for board. After school, she shoveled 40 stalls. “I’m a good pooper scooper,” she jokes. That same year, Sunny ran away from home on Blackjack and rode him all the way to Cherokee, NC. She arrived \_W _MMS[ TI\MZ 7VM VQOP\ \PM KWX[ [I_ \PM ÅZM [PM¼L J]QT\ in an amphitheater. Sunny was thrown in jail, her horse _I[ KWVÅ[KI\ML IVL ;]VVa¼[ XIZMV\[ PIL \W KWUM IVL OM\ her and the horse out of jail. Afterwards, Blackjack stayed on her uncle’s farm and Sunny went to a girl’s school in Thomasville because, as she puts it, she was “bad.” The whole time Sunny was in the girl’s school, her parents kept Blackjack for her. “It’s a reality,” she states, “that we all have to have something we really, really want that pushes us to be good.” Blackjack was what made her good, and she had him for nearly 40 years. Blackjack died at the age of 41 in 2002. He’s buried in her backyard with an apple tree at the head of his grave, and a cross made out of cedar at the foot that overlooks the entire farm. The horse was like Sunny’s soul mate. She claims he helped her understand family, feel spirit, and know about commitment and caring. “Like the Norman 9

Greenbaum song Spirit in the Sky, ‘I’m going to the spirit in the sky.’ Blackjack is the spirit in the sky, and I’m going to him and going to ride him.” A Special Visit One thing that is very clear when talking to Sunny is that she is a Christian and extremely spiritual. She grew up in a ÅVM +PZQ[\QIV NIUQTa IVL PMZ NI\PMZ¼[ UW\\W _I[ IT_Ia[ ¹)[ NWZ UM IVL Ua PW][M _M _QTT [MZ^M \PM 4WZL º <PQ[ [XQZQtuality manifested itself in one of her experiences. During an extremely low time in life, Sunny says she was visited by an angel. Sunny relates that she was sitting on a bale of hay, feeling at her lowest, with things around her falling apart, when she saw the image of a man who she knew was an angel. She heard a clearing of his throat and the image said to her, “You are here for the children.” She knew at that moment she needed to get up and do what she was meant to do. Gymkhana was already open, so she knew she was on the right path; it wasn’t a struggle anymore. “I knew I had a purpose, and that was nice,” she says. “So many people think they don’t have a purpose. They just get up and go to work and whine about their lives.” This outlook has earned her the nickname of “Ambassador of Optimism” from some of her friends. She applies this philosophy to the children she comes into contact with through her riding lessons. “The children who come to me through the horses have some kind of need, whether it is psychological or just the blessings of the day.” Although Gymkhana caters mainly to young riders, students of all ages are welcome. and older, like one woman who was 68 and wanted to take lessons just to do something she had never done before. Horse Sense Sunny takes a practical, hands-on approach to instruction. Unlike some riding lessons where all the preparation of the horse is done when the student arrives, Sunny teaches “horse sense.” Her students learn how to do everything – catch the horse, groom the horse, saddle the horse. Nothing is ready for them when they get there; they have go through all the steps. Sunny’s focus is on complete horse education. Gymkhana offers riding instruction, shows, trail rides, and summer camps. In addition to her own students, Sunny has worked with many organizations, such as church groups, the Girl Scouts, and Boy Scouts. The ranch also paraded horses in the Buggy Days parade multiple times, and Sunny has played Squanto with her horse Chief No-Teeth, telling tales of Thanksgiving. Currently, Gymhkana cares for only nine horses, without boarding or teaching, because the business has felt the effects of the economy. “We’re still here, though,” Sunny claims. “We may be just caring for horses at the moment, but we’re hoping for the students and boarders to come back.” Sunny views caring for horses as a service; she seems to gravitate toward handicapped and hurt horses. When she got Blackjack years ago, he had fungus all over him. Cody, her gentle giant, had a severe leg injury when she bought him. Scout, a pony used with smaller children, has a respiratory ailment. One of her horses was tied up to a tree in the cold with icicles hanging from it when she found it, and another was being beaten mercilessly with a whip when she purchased it from the owner. The stable walls (like the walls of her kitchen) are covered with photos, some so weathered they are barely still visible, of past students, horses, and shows. Every year, during the third week of September, leading lights of the photography world come to Pike County, Georgia. Add to that mix photographers from California, New Mexico, New York, and all points in between. It all happens at the annual SlowExposures Photography Festival.

eld during the last two weekends of every September for the past nine years. Visitors and ORFDO SKRWRJUDSK\ ORYHUV DOLNH Ă€QG FRPSHOOLQJ exhibits organized around the theme of the Rural South, and cutting-edge workshops for photographers and collectors by nationally known teachers – all presented with a generous helping of Southern hospitality and conviviality. And, place matters – the show’s unique character is established by hosting the events in Pike County’s collection of historic, nineteenth-century buildings in the landscape that once supported the area’s cotton-growing economy. For the main exhibition at Strickland’s in Concord, jurors Elisabeth Biondi and Peter Essick selected 70 images (from the 736 that were entered) that unmistakably portrayed “the contradictions and complexity of the rural American South – as it exists today.â€? The jury process is “blindâ€? – that is, the jurors see the image and the title without any other identifying information. Over a dozen area photographers (many of whom are charter members of the newly established *ULIĂ€Q 3KRWRJUDSK\ *XLOG VXEPLWWHG WKHLU ZRUN 6HYHUDO PDGH WKH FXW ² *ULIĂ€Q¡V &KDG %DNHU DQG Shannon Herren and Charlotte Weber of Barnesville. On the strength of her previous work in last year’s show, 0DOJRU]DWD )ORUNRZVND RI *ULIĂ€Q VKRZHG KHU ZRUN LQ the invitational satellite exhibit put together by John Bennette of New York City. One of the perennial questions for those who see the show and the prize winners is: “Why did they pick that?â€? The Juror’s Talk on Opening Weekend always provides some insight into their thinking. This year, the jurors talked about the distinction between iconic images of this region and stereotypes – both Biondi and Essick stressed their preference for images that leave room for ambiguity and question. First-place ZLQQHU 9LFNL +XQW¡V ´6HHNHUÂľ W\SLĂ€HG WKLV TXDOLW\ ZLWK WKH VKDGRZ\ Ă€JXUH RI D \RXQJ ER\ LQ WKH IRUHJURXQG of a church that appears to be fallen on hard times. Magdalena Sole’s second-place “Young Ladiesâ€? –

preteens with attitude – suggests several interpretations and leaves us looking again and again. Third place went to “Anthony, North Edisto Riverâ€? by Eliot Dudik, who presents a view of an uneasy young man within a quintessential southern riverside environment. Fifteen honorable mentions featured images ranging from a sinuous snake to an 1853 Presbyterian country church to a KKK cross burning. The latter image by Californian Terri Garland prompted conversation and debate among show goers, with all acknowledging the impact of a photographic image shared in real time, face to face. These winning images, and more can be seen at www.slowexposures.org. The satellite exhibitions featured John A. Bennette’s “Portraits,â€? the second part of his “Southern Memoriesâ€? trilogy, installed in the 1870 Whiskey Bonding Barn. Each photographer provided recollections of the person and/or the context of his or her image via a handwritten 3x5 card taped on the old plaster walls of the bonding ZDUHKRXVH LQ 0ROHQD ² ZKLVNH\ EHLQJ D VLJQLĂ€FDQW cash crop in the nineteenth century. The images were FRPSOHPHQWHG E\ D Ă€OP SURGXFHG E\ %DUQHVYLOOH GRFXPHQWDU\ Ă€OPPDNHU $ODQ 6WHFNHU WKDW FDSWXUHG ORFDO Pike County seniors sharing their memories of growing up in Pike County. In another show at local bookstore A Novel Experience, David Simonton presented Ellis Island: A Singular Passage, an evocative collection of black and white images shot on location with the permission of the National Park Service before the renovation of many of its buildings was completed in 1990. Two of the highlights of the show each year are the Students Show, curated by Anna Evans and the People’s Choice Award. The theme for the ninth Students Show was “Reading, ‘riting, and “rithmetic.â€? Winning students in each category were presented with huge gold trophies and ribbons at their special awards ceremony on the last Sunday of the show. The images are surprising in their sophistication, wit, and dead-on interpretations of the theme. Visitors were often heard remarking that these pictures are as good as the main

exhibition – it may be that opportunity to view excellent photography for the past nine years has made an impact on the kids. The People’s Choice is awarded to the image that gathered the most votes from the over 700 visitors to this year’s show. That black and white image, “Burning the Fieldsâ€? by Texan Will Jacks captured this seasonal rite of the rural south – it truly resonated with many who picked it for this year’s award that included a framing JLIW FHUWLĂ€FDWH IURP *ULIĂ€Q¡V - 0LFKDHO¡V A host of over 50 volunteers from this area make the show happen, everything from hosting each day’s show and events, to moving the cache of libations from event to event throughout the two weeks of social gatherings. Before the show is unpacked and hung, volunteers create a jurors’ CD with every image, get it to the jurors (this year, one juror reviewed the images while sitting in a small airport in southern Africa), update the website, recruit nationally known presenters, and convince them to spend the weekend in Pike County, Georgia (without compensation except for the fun of it and the chance to see emerging talent). They SURGXFH D Ă€UVW FODVV VKRZ FDWDORJ FUHDWH the magical evening of the SlowExposures Ball, pull off the publicity (that this year was reported on a Parisian photography blog), and countless other tasks that pop up during the year-long planning cycle. The combination of creative volunteers, local support by businesses and arts groups, the generosity and hospitality of the City of Concord, and the support of the entire community who welcome our visitors makes the event a singularly unique and gracious experience. Combine this with serendipitous meetings and greetings of old and new friends, business and networking in pastoral settings where one can see the Milky Way, and where,

sometimes, the lack of cell towers renders cell phones impotent – the experience is magical, and happens only once a year in this most unique place.

After more than 60 years in the broadcasting business, Jack has stories about them all. Jack went to high school in Barnesville and then served in the Navy during World War II. After that he attended Mercer University. When Jack left Mercer, Mercer’s vocational advisement test results showed that Jack was best suited for one of three professions: Criminal lawyer, sales manager, or radio announcer.

One memorable event at that station was an early foray into recycling. “I had a milk carton contest to win a bicycle. And we got all these empty milk cartons, but the sour milk smell got into the air conditioning.â€? Jack took the advisement seriously and applied for a job, with the guidance counselor’s recommendation, at WNEX in Macon. “They said I didn’t have enough experience,â€? Jack recalls, “so I took a job at WKTG in Thomasville. In one month I had enough experience to know who to talk to at WNEX, and I lied and said I had nine months, and the general manager said, ‘You do great for nine months!’ In the radio business, you get an opportunity and you keep moving. he bought a country station, WCRY, in Macon. But he found that he had a lot more fun in front of the microphone. “I wasn’t cut out for ownership,� Jack says. Back in Jacksonville once again, in August of 1968, Jack began hosting what was billed as “a controversial new talk show that would not be a ‘thank you for calling’ type of show� on weekday mornings on WIVYAM in Jacksonville. Jack says, “It was billed that way, but everyone was doing ‘controversy’ at that time. We decided to let controversy happen when it happened.� Though unafraid of a good debate, Jack prefers “lots of laughter,� and that’s what he delivered. He featured one story about an extraterrestrial hoax perpetrated by two barbers who shaved a dead rhesus monkey and dyed him green. They took the corpse to the Atlanta Journal and claimed the “extraterrestrial� had run across the road on a rainy night near Carrolton, Georgia, and they’d hit him with their car – all on a bet the barbers had that they could get in the paper. Jack told the story and then took callers. Jack sent the tape of that show to Westinghouse Corporation’s legendary KDKA in Pittsburgh.

Blue Eyes.� The reason was that Jack began a running MRNH DERXW QRW HYHU TXLWH EHLQJ DEOH WR JHW )UDQN 6LQDWUD on the show. “My career was calling celebrities,� says Jack. “And they liked to talk because the show went nation wide. So my shtick was that I was after Sinatra – ‘Can you help me get Frank?’ After a while I thought, I don’t really want him because it’ll louse up the act!� Jack’s career allowed him some rare peeks at many celebrated personalities. Like seeing Jimmy Durante naked. “I’m backstage with him,� Jack says. “He’s standing there, an old man with no clothes on, and this guy was rubbing him down with Noxema.� Another favorite of Jack’s is Phyllis Diller who shares his edgy sense of humor. “These were lovely people,� Jack says fondly. KDKA put Jack to work on a trial basis. “They said they ZHUHQ¡W VXUH ZLWK P\ VRXWKHUQ DFFHQW KRZ ,¡G Ă€W LQWR Pittsburgh,â€? says Jack. “I didn’t sign a contract for three PRQWKV Âľ %XW -DFN Ă€W LQ TXLWH QLFHO\ ,Q WKH VXPPHU RI 1969, KDKA debuted overnight talk with Jack Wheeler, an anything-goes talk show that ran from midnight to 6 a.m. six nights a week. “We had like 12 phone lines,â€? Jack recalls. “Frank Sinatra, Jr. said he used to listen to me in Beverly Hills – from Pittsburgh!â€?

I was on this kick to try to disparage the rumor that Adolf Hitler was still alive. I know the man is dead. But Buddy was in there, and he and the audience were arguing that Hitler could still be alive. So after about an hour of this foolishness, I said, ‘I just got a cablegram from Montevideo, Uruguay, and it reads, “Dear Jack, we are listening to your show in Montevideo. Always listen; love what you do, and I agree with you – Adolf Hitler is dead. Signed, A. Schicklgruber.�’ [For you youngsters, “Shicklgruber,� Hitler’s mother’s maiden name, was one of the names conspiracy theorists say Hitler adopted while in hiding.] Then Buddy says, “No, he’s still alive. He’s in the White House. He shaved off his moustache and calls himself Nixon.’� Jack’s wry and irreverent humor is ever apparent, as are his opinions. He has a signed photograph of Richard Nixon in his bathroom, hanging above the toilet.

“Spring  Vernonâ€?  and  Jack  Springs As with many other long-running, call-in talk shows,

from all over the U.S.,� says Jack. “Then the Westinghouse lawyers got involved and said, ‘Jack, you can’t just start a fundraiser!’ so we had to send all the money back.� Jack is a perfectionist about his work and wants those around him to take broadcasting just as seriously. This once led to his walking off the air during his show on KDKA. With a dozen phone lines, the producer’s job of screening calls was essential, but obscene calls were leaking through far too often, leaving Jack to deal with them on the air. “So I put on ‘For All We Know (We May Never Meet Again),’ and I walked off and went to go visit my friend Marty Allen in Canada.� Jack soon got a call from Westinghouse in New York, asking him to return and setting up a meeting with the area vice president to get him better production support. But they warned Jack: “They said they thought I was right, but they didn’t want me lording it over the General Manager at KDKA. I said, ‘Don’t worry; I won’t even talk to him.’�

Keeping  the  Standards  Alive

After a long career in radio, Jack retired to a beautiful home in Costa Rica, but Jack Wheeler isn’t one to sit still. “I was by myself, essentially, and my daughter said, ‘Dad, get home and go to work.’ So slowly, slowly, inexorably, I wound up in Barnesville – right back where I started.�

Jack’s show attracted some characters that became UHJXODUV )RU H[DPSOH 9HUQRQ¡V Ă€UVW FDOO ZDV IURP the Veterans Hospital where he was being treated for a broken ankle. He’d gone on a bender and ended up at a couple’s apartment where he’d tripped over the kitchen threshold after relieving himself in their sink. He then EHJDQ WR FDOO LQ WR FKURQLFOH VXEVHTXHQW GUXQNHQ DGYHQtures. “He would get drunk,â€? says Jack, “and call in to recite every county in West Virginia, alphabetically.â€? Another time Vernon called when he’d been hit by a station wagon that removed his tattoo. And once, Jack got a call from the Pittsburgh police department. Vernon had thrown a bottle through a plate glass window and was arrested. Vernon was such a popular character by this time, that Jack started a “Spring Vernon Fund.â€? Contributors could send no more than $2. “We got mail 36

Jack would like to see local radio stations acknowledge the great interest in “the standards,â€? as sung by original artists like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett as well as contemporary artists like Michael Buble and Diana Krall, but also unexpected covers by the likes of Michelle Pfeiffer or Ronnie Milsap. “It sometimes hurts my hair to listen to the music on the radio today,â€? Jack laments. “There are, I would think, approximately 14 FM stations in this area playing country music and at least 5 AM stations playing country music. I have nothing against country music. I used to own WCRY, made money with it. But there must be room somewhere on the dial for somebody who likes to hear good music. And when I say good music, I don’t mean Lawrence Welk.â€? Jack has already tested the waters by hosting a swing GDQFH LQ *ULIĂ€Q WR EHQHĂ€W WKH )RRG 3DQWU\ ZKRVH administrators secured the Kiwanis Club as the venue whle Jack and listener Bobby Bunn contracted an 18-piece orchestra to provide the music. “We said, ( 7 7 0) 412 - 0 4 41

‘We’re gonna have a swing dance as good as anyone, ’ says Jack. “We had around 250 people there and had to make at least a couple thousand bucks for the Food Pantry. I wanted to keep it going. Bobby Bunn and I are going to keep it going,� Jack pledges. Jack is also volunteering for senior centers here and in Spalding County, delighting them with the music they remember, “instead of pushing people around the hospital,� says Jack. And that music collection is extensive. Jack claims his professional library will play for a little over a week without repeating. The play times recorded in his catalog of music include the number of seconds that the announcer can talk over the intro without talking over the lyrics. Some have 24 seconds of voiceover time, while others “start cold.� Jack says, “That’s the kind of thing that makes your show sound better. So that’s why I get frustrated. The art of broadcasting isn’t what it was.�
