n Thursday and Saturday afternoons at 1:00, when it's not raining and the temperature is at least 50 degrees, the Canvas Chair Sailors take their canvas chairs to the lake at Wyomia Tyus Park to sail, and sometimes race, their radio-controlled (RC) boats. These sailboats are one meter long (3'4” hull), with a four-foot mast, and they have no propulsion power except for the wind. Each boat has two battery-powered servos that move the sails and rudder. The rechargeable batteries used on the boats allow many of them to sail for several days on each charge. Since the boats require no gasoline or oil, they are quite clean and environmentally safe.

According to the club's founder, Don Hightower, sailing model boats is “amazingly parallel” to piloting full-sized boats, with a key difference being that in operating RC boats, the sailor is not on board to make the very fine adjustments that are possible when aboard a full-sized vessel. Radiocontrolled sailing presents interesting new challenges with each change of the wind, according to Don. He describes it as “a barrel of fun” that costs very little. The Canvas Chair Sailors are seeking members from all over Griffin and surrounding areas. Most of the club's 18 current members live in Sun City Peachtree. “We want to get the rest of Griffin involved!” says Don enthusiastically. Dan Bookwalter encourages local residents to give RC sailing a try, mentioning that learning to sail is a fun activity for the whole family. Novice sailors can receive help from the more experienced skippers in the Canvas Chair Sailors. “We train members in all aspects of sailing—you don’t have to have any experience at all,” says Don. “The ability to make the boats move at maximum speed with the available, shifting wind is what it’s all about.” Each new member is coached individually,

with transmitter in hand, until able to sail independently. Prospective members don’t even need to own a boat—the Canvas Chair skippers have boats they can use when trying out RC sailing for themselves. New members can learn skills such as how to set the sails and how to adjust for changes in wind direction. Prospective sailors would be hard-pressed to find better mentors than Don and his cohorts in the Canvas Chair Sailors. Don is quite an experienced sailor, of both radio-controlled boats and the full-sized variety. He and his wife, Binnie, spent 18 years sailing their 34’ sailboat around Florida’s east coast, the Bahamas, and the Florida Keys. Don has been sailing RC sailboats for 12 years and has participated in regattas from south Florida to North Carolina. His RC sailboat, the Black Widow, has placed in national regattas and won sixth place in the nation in 2009. Don started the Canvas Chair Sailors club in 2009, immediately after moving to the Sun City Peachtree community. Even before he moved to Georgia, Don had been corresponding via email with Louis Greene, Spalding County Parks and Recreation Director, about the possibility of starting a radio-controlled model sailing club in Griffin. Louis shared Don’s excitement over the new opportunity for the area’s residents. When the two finally met at Wyomia Tyus Park, Don mentioned that it would be nice to have a small launching platform at water’s edge because the sailboats have deep keels. A few weeks later, Don received an email from Louis: “How do you like your platform?” After rushing to the lake, Don couldn’t believe his eyes. There, floating out in the deep water, was an 8 foot square platform and a walkway, 3 feet wide and 12 feet long, ending in a fenced area with a gate—all supported by floating pads chained to anchors. Don says, “The Spalding County Parks and Recreation people have done the impossible for us, and we have a long-lasting launching platform for years to come...We have the perfect place for regattas or just sailing with a beautiful environment.” According to Don, model RC sailing is a popular activity all over the United States and throughout Europe. It seems to be growing in popularity locally. According to Don, when the Canvas Chair Sailors invite RC skippers from Peachtree City to race with them, they end up with quite a few boats on the water—22 at their last gathering. The organization for model boating in the U.S. is called the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA); most RC skippers are members of this association. The small annual membership fee for AMYA includes a subscription to the national magazine ModelYachting. Come on out to the lake. It’s great to have the chance to learn sailing right here in Griffin. Don says, “This is addictive, and you can’t wait to get back out on the water!”

His pet SURMHFW LV KRZHYHU EDVHG RQ SHRSOH FRPLQJ WR *ULIĂ€Q based on Georgia’s multibillion-dollar heritage tourism industry that, as one example, draws 600,000 people a year to Savannah’s historic cemeteries.

The space itself is a step into the past. The approximately 1,000-square-foot space where the archives are located was once an art room on the old Taylor Street Middle School campus. Clearing out closets for space, Barton has rediscovered forgotten art projects, and on one of the ceiling tiles above her KHDG LV D FKLOG¡V EULJKWO\ SDLQWHG GHSLFWLRQ RI D Ă€VK Just a few days into her new assignment, she describes her project as humble and just getting started, but quickly follows that by saying, “My goal isn’t for these archives to house folders and boxes that are shuttered away, not to be seen by the light of day. My goal is to make history come alive here for people to experience and enjoy.â€? Surrounded by more than three dozen boxes that the historical society has already donated to the cause, it would appear she has her work cut out for her. But as Barton assesses her new surroundings, VKH¡V FRQYLQFHG HDFK RQH RI WKRVH ER[HV³ÀOOHG ZLWK old negatives, photo albums, books, and newspaper clippings—has a story to tell, and her enthusiasm for discovering those stories is palpable.

Already Morrow laments that “The mill town is getting away from us to where this generation doesn’t understand the textile industry that past generations spent their lives building.â€? 0RUURZ EHOLHYHV *ULIĂ€Q¡V PRVW SRSXODU historical attractions will fall into three main categories: veteran and Civil War history, African American history, and ancestral tracking. In addition to Stonewall Confederate Cemetery where 514 soldiers—including one Union soldier, Nathan .HOORJJÂłDUH EXULHG *ULIĂ€Q KRXVHG VL[ &RQIHGHUDWH hospitals to care for soldiers during the Battle of Atlanta and was home to Confederate infantry training Camp Stephens and cavalry Camp Milner (today’s City Park). According to Brown’s Guide to Georgia, Henry B. Holliday, the father of John Henry “Docâ€? Holliday, made his home on the land that would become Camp Stephens. That same piece of land also happens to be part of the old trading route used by Chief McIntosh of the Creek Indian Nation, now known as the McIntosh Trail. African Americans are driving a huge movement within heritage tourism. As many African $PHULFDQV OHIW WKH 6RXWK WR Ă€QG ZRUN XS 1RUWK PDQ\ of their descendants are now returning to the Southeast

On Saturday, March 30th, Atlanta hybrid rock band Lingo had a sound, or rather an aura, that could scarcely be contained within its walls. Lingo’s promotional material describes the band as one with their own “secret” musical language, with this claim: “Music may be the universal language, but that doesn’t mean it should all sound the same.” I know when an artist is hyped as being eclectic, genre-less, or otherwise inexplicable, it either means they are easily classified but prefer not to be, or they are saying, “Just listen to the music; don’t read about it.” With Lingo, I lean toward the latter. Music is abstract enough to be a universal language, almost to the point where discussing it in written language is trivial. To pique curiosity, I’ll say that any band capable of seamlessly and spontaneously transitioning into Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters” theme and doing a flawless cover of Tom Petty’s “Last Dance With Mary Jane” (in turn, making me appreciate a song I never really enjoyed) has my attention. I had questions for Lingo even before I knew what type of band they were. I spoke to lead guitarist Daniel and bassist Alex a little while before they played and to various band members during a few little “intermissions.” I had to admit that although I didn’t expect to enjoy the band, I really did. 32

I came to the show tonight with no expectations, and I was actually expecting you guys to be a jam band along the lines of Dave Matthews, but found that preconception was inaccurate. But do you guys consider it a slight if someone were to describe you in that way—would you say you’re a “jam band?�

Justin: I just think that we’re a band that jams. I quickly discovered I think you guys have something IRU HYHU\ERG\ 7UDGLWLRQDO LQĂ XHQFHVÂł,¡P MXVW JRLQJ to go down a list and you can say “yeaâ€? or “nay.â€? Parliament Funkadelic?

Whole Band: Yes! King Crimson?

Tony: Yeah, Gruber was talking about King Crimson earlier, actually. That is all stuff we listen to...you know, our influences can just be rooted into what we listen to in the van. What else do you listen to?

Justin: Wilco! Tony: Yeah, I was just about to say Wilco is a good example of band that’s like in between funk and jam band. But “jam band� sometimes has a negative connotation...

Tony: Definitely. Justin: But if people used that to describe us, we’d of course say no. That’s just not us. <RX¡UH D Ă€YH SLHFH EDQG EXW ZRXOG \RX VD\ WKHUH¡V any one voice that governs the sound, like do you go into a practice session thinking, I want to make a song that sounds like‌Prince, or something?

Justin: Not really, because you know, Tony’s one of the best keyboard players around and we got a lot of stuff coming together in the room, and everyone’s so professional with what they do. Greg: Are you asking musically or lyrically? I guess I’m asking if you go into the whole process with a predetermined idea like this is what we want to achieve with this song, or if you just kind of feel DURXQG XQWLO \RX ÀQG VRPHWKLQJ \RX OLNH

Justin: Whoever contributes an idea to the group, they may have a preconceived notion, but it’s maturity that’s there in the band where everyone takes what they hear from that, and it just builds up and builds up, and all of a sudden we’re making a song. Your songs aren’t all wildly different from one another but I wouldn’t accuse you of really ever

playing the same thing twice.

Greg: Obviously Louis C.K., Carlin, Mitch Hedberg‌ but yeah, obviously in comedy it’s about punchlines and timing, and the punchline is where it explodes, which is just something that translates to music easily. I feel like the Ghostbusters thing didn’t get the DSSURSULDWH UHVSRQVH 'RHV SRS FXOWXUH OLNH ÀOP SOD\ a big role in how you present your live shows?

Tony: Sure. I mean, we all pay attention. If someone brings up something like that, all of a sudden it triggers something in us and we hear it and then vibrations come back while we’re playing and all of a sudden it’s like, oh, we’re starting to do this now‌ Justin: To be honest, there’s sections of the songs where whatever any one of us may be thinking at that moment could come into play—say, if any one of us got a drink poured in our face earlier we could potentially end up singing “Poured a drink in mah face! Poured a drink in mah face!â€? Did you have any idea you were going to segue into the Ghostbusters thing beforehand?

Justin: The very idea of Ghostbusters never even came up until the moment we started playing it, it was just a jam that ended up sorta sounding like it. ,W¡V FRRO WKDW DOO Ă€YH RI \RX FRXOG WDS LQWR WKDW DW once.

Justin: It’s cool you recognize that. I’ve always thought the most fun thing about making music is actually performing it because it’s spontaneous. I noticed the improvisational element is GHÀQLWHO\ WKHUH EXW DW WKH VDPH WLPH VHHPV SROLVKHG and orchestrated.

A Low Country Boil is a lot of fun and an easy way to feed a hungry group of people. My recipe is sure to be a hit at your next shindig. An old trick I learned from a Cajun friend is the addition of an artichoke to the pot. Don’t ask me why. I created this recipe in a pinch one day, and it was surprisingly good. This is what I call a Georgia sauce because it combines the best of a variety of sauces: a little mustard, a little vinegar, a little sweetness, and a little back-end heat. Adding the Baker’s Bark to these everyday ingredients takes this sauce to another level. Trust me. I especially like this one for chicken (pictured). ermit  me  a  brief  moment  of  hyperbole:  The  Lord  of  the  Rings  series  (hereafter  referred  to  DV /275 ZKLFK FRPSULVHV WKUHH OHQJWK\ ÂżOPV released  between  2001  and  2003,  remains  one  of  the  most  remarkable  artistic  achievements  of  the  21st  century  to  date.  Though  J.R.R.  Tolkien  purists  may  take  issue  with  some  of  the  decisions  director  Peter  Jackson  made  in  adapting  the  classic  fantasy  novels  for  the  big  VFUHHQ LWÂśV KDUG WR ÂżQG PXFK IDXOW ZLWK -DFNVRQÂśV HSLF thunderous,  and  immensely  entertaining  approach  on  a  SXUHO\ FLQHPDWLF OHYHO 7KH ÂżOPV ZHUH PDVVLYH KLWV DW WKH ER[ RIÂżFH DQG KDYH UHWDLQHG DQ LQWHQVHO\ OR\DO IDQ EDVH over  the  past  decade,  so  it  should  come  as  no  surprise  that  Jackson  eventually  decided  to  return  to  Middle-­earth  with  an  adaptation  of  Tolkien’s  The  Hobbit.  Though  the  ¿UVW ÂżOP LQ KLV ODWHVW WULORJ\ LV H[FHSWLRQDO HQWHUWDLQPHQW on  its  own  terms,  it  never  quite  manages  to  recapture  the  incomparable  magic  of  the  LOTR  series.   The  Hobbit:  An  Unexpected  Journey  is,  of  course,  a  prequel  to  LOTR,  and  as  such  begins  many  years  before  the  events  of  that  series.  The  main  character  is  Bilbo  Baggins  (Martin  Freeman,  Sherlock),  an  amiable  fellow  whose  peaceful  existence  is  disrupted  when  a  wizard  named  Gandalf  the  Grey  (Ian  McKellen,  X-­Men)  invites  KLP RQ D JUDQG DGYHQWXUH 6RRQ %LOER ÂżQGV KLPVHOI aligned  with  a  group  of  rowdy  dwarves  on  a  mission  to  destroy  the  evil  dragon  Smaug.  Alas,  along  the  way  they’ll  be  forced  to  fend  off  hungry  trolls,  savage  orcs,  rock-­ slinging  mountains,  and  other  obstacles.   When  it  comes  to  the  original  novels,  the  key  difference  between  The  Hobbit  and  The  Lord  of  the  Rings  is  that  the  former  is  essentially  a  children’s  book:  a  cheerful,  frothy  adventure  which  relies  more  on  gentle  British  whimsy  than  dark  drama.  The  movie  adaptation  VHHPV FRQĂ€LFWHG RQ ZKHWKHU WR UHPDLQ WUXH WR WKDW SOD\IXO charming  tone  or  to  deliver  another  portentous  blockbuster  LQ WKH YHLQ RI WKH /275 ÂżOPV 7KH HQG UHVXOW LV VRPHWKLQJ of  a  compromise,  offering  some  scenes  which  feel  like  the  closest  Jackson  has  come  to  truly  capturing  the  essence  of  Tolkien’s  writing  and  other  scenes  which  feel  like  a  rather  forced  attempt  to  add  a  jolt  of  adrenaline.  Perhaps  unsurprisingly,  it’s  the  gentle  material  which  works  best.  When  the  movie  focuses  on  the  charming,  conversation-­ w w w.k it chendr aw er.net

fueled  moments  between  its  likable  characters,  it’s  a  delight.  Alternately,  the  action-­packed  subplot  involving  a  ferocious,  revenge-­seeking  orc  (a  subplot  which  is  nowhere  to  be  found  in  Tolkien’s  novel,  incidentally)  feels  like  run-­ of-­the-­mill  action/fantasy  material.   There’s  plenty  of  action  and  adventure  to  be  found  LQ WKH QRYHO VR ZK\ GLG WKH ÂżOPPDNHUV IHHO D QHHG WR VWXII more  into  the  mix?  Because  The  Hobbit—which  is  a  rather  VKRUW ERRN²LV EHLQJ VSUHDG RXW DFURVV WKUHH IHDWXUH ÂżOPV The  Hobbit:  An  Unexpected  Journey RQO\ FRYHUV WKH ÂżUVW seven  chapters  of  the  novel,  most  of  which  are  rather  low-­ key  affairs.  Had  Jackson  made  a  strictly  faithful  adaptation  RI WKRVH FKDSWHUV WKH PDMRULW\ RI WKH ÂżOP ZRXOG EH DERXW D hobbit,  a  wizard,  and  some  dwarves  who  had  a  nice  dinner  and  went  on  a  long  walk.  After  Jackson’s  tinkering,  we  KDYH D ÂżOP DERXW D KREELW D ZL]DUG DQG VRPH GZDUYHV who  had  a  nice  dinner,  went  on  a  long  walk,  and  FOUGHT  A  BUNCH  OF  BATTLES  AND  STUFF!  You  see  the  subtle  difference,  I  trust.  While  Tolkien’s  story  probably  FRXOG KDYH EHHQ WROG UDWKHU HIIHFWLYHO\ LQ WZR ÂżOPV²DK who  am  I  kidding,  it  could  have  been  told  effectively  in  RQH ÂżOP²-DFNVRQÂśV DSSURDFK LQHYLWDEO\ OHDGV WR VRPH needless  padding.   Even  so,  there’s  one  key  sequence  in  which  the  GLUHFWRU RIIHUV VRPH RI WKH ÂżQHVW ZRUN RI KLV FDUHHU ,WÂśV DQ H[WHQGHG ULGGOH ÂżOOHG FRQYHUVDWLRQ EHWZHHQ %LOER and  the  sinister  Gollum,  a  computer-­generated  imagery  (CGI)  creature  enhanced  greatly  by  the  voice  and  motion-­ capture  performance  of  Andy  Serkis  (King  Kong)—a  scene  so  spellbinding  that  it  stands  on  its  own  as  a  miniature  masterpiece.  It’s  a  welcome  reminder  that  Jackson  is  still  capable  of  fully  capturing  the  depth  and  richness  of  Tolkien’s  work.  The  Hobbit:  An  Unexpected  Journey  may  have  its  faults,  but  when  it  works,  it  becomes  something  rather  special.  When  you  see  that  unmistakable  twinkle  in  Gandalf’s  eye,  when  you  listen  to  the  dwarves  sing  a  haunting  melody,  and  when  you  get  one  of  those  long,  awe-­ inducing  shots  of  the  New  Zealand—er,  Middle-­earth— countryside,  you’re  reminded  of  why  you  fell  in  love  with  this  franchise.  Here’s  hoping  there’s  even  more  of  that  magic  in  the  next  two  installments.  To  paraphrase  Anton  &KHNKRY Âł,I LQ WKH ÂżUVW PRYLH \RX LQWURGXFH D GUDJRQ LQ the  next  movie  you  should  let  him  do  something.â€? 47
