GILMAN DRAKE ARCHITECTURE BY DREW TODD AND DREW PAYNE PHOTOS BY BEAU GENTRY
A Spark of Revitalization The mythology of Griffin is instilled in residents of our fair town—native-born and newcomers, alike— primarily through an oral tradition. Stories are passed around social circles and handed down from one generation to another, so that Griffin citizens share a common (sometimes factual, sometimes not) folklore providing nifty reasons for why things are as they are. Befuddled Griffinites often use these tales to explain away their city’s various idiosyncrasies—Spider-Man’s sedulous vigil from an old hotel display window in downtown, for instance. Indeed, most folks who have spent a minute in Spalding County could quickly rattle off reasons for the demise of the old mills, the rise in the price of milk, and exactly what is rotten in the state of Denmark—usually gleaned from unreliable word-of-mouth sources. Among some subsets of the town’s population, positivity is frowned upon. There is, however, an emerging concern that wants to make Griffin better, interested in moving forward by modernizing the city’s infrastructure and economy, while also respecting the past. A spark of development and refurbishment has been lit. This space is dedicated to promoting one aspect of that much-needed, oft-overlooked revitalization—the renovation of Griffin’s historic buildings. The plan is simple: to highlight Griffin’s structural showplaces, some of which have fallen into disrepair. The hope is that this feature will replace negative perceptions of Griffin and provide readers a novel mythology that emphasizes the hidden, reclaimable beauty of the city’s architectural wonders.
My Perspective To the untrained eye, there are only a handful of building styles. Folk Victorian, French Renaissance, Greek Revival‌terms like these carry little meaning for most, who are content with a moderately conversant knowledge of square footage and floor coverings, considering the details of construction superfluous, rather than high art. Disinterest abounds, and the perfunctory Beautiful Homes of‌ coffee table book often goes untouched. My own interest in architecture could best be described as budding. I know little of archways and awnings. My eyes number among the untrained. Therefore, I maintain that there are three types of buildings: 1. Nondescript newer homes with useful features designed for convenience. These include, but are not limited to, built-Âin television cabinets and water heaters. 2. Older structures possessing massive amounts of curb appeal, but little useful living space. Often they are rambling, confusing buildings composed of an original hub and various spoke-Âlike additions—lovely on the outside, maze-Âlike on the inside. 3. Historic properties that combine aesthetic sensibilities with practical functionality. This is a rare breed, both beautiful and utilitarian. Many times they are older, and in need of repair.
Â
Gilman Drake In my mind, the third type of structure is most desirable, but as with anything in demand, supply is limited. The small city of Griffin, however, fortunately contains a disproportionately large number of these buildings, both residential and commercial, thanks in part to Gilman Drake, a 19th century architect, contractor, alderman, volunteer fireman, and bank president. Gilman Drake—scion of a Revolutionary War hero, bona fide New England aristocrat—arrived in Griffin from New Hampshire in the early 1850s, on the eve of the Civil War. Working as a contractor, Drake designed and built a number of structures in Griffin, contributing extensively to

the city’s growth and beauty. After two decades in construction, Drake switched gears vocationally, becoming the first president of City National Bank in 1873, where he worked until his untimely death at 57, twelve years later. Although Drake is interred at Oak Hill Cemetery with requisite headstone and grave marker, he is most appropriately memorialized in the structures he built and left behind. Indeed, Drake’s obituary in the Griffin Daily News declared that his Sam Bailey Building “will stand as a monument to his own memory, erected by his own hands.” Following is a primer of Drake’s architectural legacy in Griffin. During the mid-1800s, the Greek Revival building style steadily increased in popularity in the United States, spreading from Philadelphia southward, making its way down the Atlantic seaboard, preceding Gilman Drake’s arrival in Georgia by just a few short years. Drake built several homes in this style, with two still standing on South Hill Street in downtown Griffin—the Milner-Hill-Kurtz House and another that is currently for sale. These two homes are excellent examples of the Greek Revival style, with columned front porches, low-pitched roofs, and symmetrical façades. Built around the same time, during the waning years of the antebellum period, the two homes have been on divergent paths in recent decades. The Milner-Hill-Kurtz house has been fully restored, remains in pristine condition, and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973. Meanwhile, the other Gilman Drake home on South Hill, which served as a private residence for many years, has recently fallen into disrepair. Even in its current state, the house impressed Georgia Trust brass during a recent tour of Griffin, who remarked on the beauty of its bones and its historic relevance. It is on the market and provides an excellent opportunity for a home buyer in search of a fixer-upper.
Gilman Drake clearly appreciated Greek Revival motifs, but as this style slowly grew out of favor in the 1860s, Drake became a proponent of a newer trend, Italianate design. This resulted in his most recognizable architectural accomplishment in Griffin: the Sam Bailey Building. It is a quintessential example of Italianate design, incorporating stylistic traits easily recognizable to students of architecture. Unlike other enduring Gilman Drakes, the Sam Bailey Building was never intended to serve a residential purpose. It was originally constructed in the 1870s as classroom space for the Sam Bailey Institute, a private school for boys. It served this purpose for well over 100 years, meeting the educational needs of many Griffin natives, and was eventually absorbed by the public school system. Even after decades of heavy use, the Sam Bailey Building remains strikingly beautiful, particularly its pronounced eaves, decorative brackets, and arched windows, all hallmarks of the Italianate style. Any study of Griffin’s architecture should certainly include Gilman Drake’s contributions to our town. He is responsible for much of downtown Griffin’s curb appeal. The exploration of our city’s architectural treasures should not end here, though. Other notable structures that deserve attention are peppered throughout Griffin. One of Griffin’s greatest assets is its historically significant, visually pleasing infrastructure. I hope that one day, every Griffinite will notice, appreciate, utilize, and preserve the architectural heritage we have inherited from our forebears.

ifty years ago I had to be one of the happiest kids on the planet. The summer I turned 13, like many summers before and a few after, was a wondrous time for me. School was out and I was outdoors! My friends and I did a lot of fun things all summer long, but one of my favorites was damming the branch that flowed through our farm. Dearing Branch was small—I could jump across it in most places, and it was much too shallow for swimming, but we figured out a way to make a swimming hole. One spot near the property line was sandy and wide for about 20 feet, then it narrowed where it ran between a big oak on one side and a sweet gum tree on the other. The banks along the sandy area were fairly steep, and it was the perfect place for making a pool. We dragged old railroad crossties across the field and through the woods to the spot. My friends Harold and Hal were always with me, and we worked harder than we ever would have if told to do something by our parents. Those crossties were very heavy, so we had to drag them a few feet, stop and rest, then drag again. The three of us could only pick up one end at a time, but we managed to get two or three to our future pool. We stacked them on top of each other in front of the trees, making a wall about three feet high. This required digging out the areas where the ends of the crossties would fit, and we dug for hours. The first time we tried this we shoveled sand in front of the crossties, but it soon washed away. So we made sandbags—filling croker sacks that had held oats or corn for the cows with sand, then dragging them to stack in front of the crossties. We learned pretty quickly to fill them as near where we wanted to place them as possible. Sacks of wet sand are very heavy! This held and didn't wash out. After all this work, we waited...and waited. The flow of the branch was slow and it took two or three days for our pool to fill, but we finally had a deep swimming hole. At least it was deep enough for a young boy to stand in water over waist deep and paddle around a little. It felt wonderful in the hot July weather.
w w w.k it chendr aw er.net
We did this year after year for several years. It was easier after we built the first dam since we didn't have to drag the huge crossties; they were already in place. Although winter rains would wash out our dam, we were able to rebuild it every year. Our swimming attire was simple – we stripped off our jeans and underwear and went skinny dipping. None of us thought anything about it. My parents knew but didn't care. It was a different time when three teenage boys could cavort in the woods naked and not worry about anything but mosquitoes. Often, by the end of August, the branch would almost dry up. Our pool would have water in it, but not much, and a few other deeper holes would have a little water. The branch had tiny bream and catfish in it, and they would get concentrated in those holes, often dying when the water ran out. Every time the branch dried up we tried to rescue the fish. We would take buckets to the branch, dip up some of the scarce water, and catch the little fish by hand. Toting them back through the woods and across the field was hard work, but we would get them back to the house some way. At the house, we would run a hose from our well to a series of washtubs, fill them with water, and put the fish in them. Sometimes they would live for several days. They never lived long, but we never gave up. Looking back now, it seems strange that we would work so hard to save those fish. We would rescue fish one day, then, the next day, walk another 200 yards from the branch, fish in Rodgers Pond, and catch bream and catfish the same size as those in the tubs. When we got those pond fish home we would clean them and have them for dinner while their brethren swam outside in the tubs. We never thought that was strange. I guess it is a little weird to treat some fish as pets and others as food, but we saw no conflict back then, and neither did our parents—at least they never said anything about it. I wish I could go back to those simple times when everything seemed right, and summer days seemed endless. 5HDG PRUH IURP 5RQQLH DW KWWS ÀVKLQJ DERXW FRP 9

merica’s struggle with obesity and unhealthy habits recently became personal with an article released in March by 11 Alive News addressing the health of Spalding County residents. The University of Wisconsin's research study ranked Spalding the unhealthiest county in the metro Atlanta area, with an adult obesity rate higher than the national average. Because much of our county is rural, they claimed we don’t have enough access to healthy lifestyle options like gyms and healthy food. We have both of those things, so how can this be true?

f you ask John Carlisle, owner of the old Coca-Cola bottling plant on Taylor Street, about his first memory of Coke, he’ll tell you that he doesn’t have one‌and isn’t that the point? To Carlisle, Coca-Cola, or “Co-Colaâ€? as it’s softly spoken in the South, is so much a part of our lives it’s difficult to separate it from one memory to the next. “It’s been there since I remember,â€? he says, and he’s betting he’s not alone in his experience. This spring, Carlisle asked Griffinites to share their own Coke memories in the form of photographs. “I wanted snapshots of people in their everyday lives with a Coca-Cola in their hands or in the background,â€? he told Kitchen Drawer. Searching for historical, candid moments of which Coke was a part, Carlisle is creating an ongoing photography exhibit inside the building dedicated to what he calls “the feel-good emblem of our society.â€? Much like its namesake, Carlisle believes his Griffin Coca-Cola building is an icon of sorts. He worries that we may not fully appreciate the place that the building and the brand have in society. “Like so many icons, I think it’s been overlooked. We’ve not fully appreciated it, and Coke is that way too,â€? he says. “It’s (such) a part of our lives that we don’t really recognize and value the role it’s played, because much like those memories, it can fade into the everyday.â€? Most locals can’t recall a time when the nearly 75-year-old building wasn’t there. “It’s easy to drive right by and take it for granted,â€? Carlisle says. As an employee of Coca-Cola, as well as a relatively new resident of Griffin, I wanted to know more about the company’s history in our town. I did a little research at Coca-Cola headquarters in Atlanta that revealed the building’s and the company’s rich history in Griffin. In 1907, the Griffin Coca-Cola Bottling Company was granted a charter to operate, taking over territory previously served by the Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Company. J.C. Vaughn managed plant operations, and in its first year the bottling company produced 2,768 gallons of CocaCola. In 1912, H.B. Montgomery Sr. succeeded Vaughn and managed the plant w w w.k it chendr aw er.net
until 1954, when A. Talley Montgomery was named plant manager. During its fifty years in operation, the Griffin plant moved only once. In the early 1940s it relocated to its current address on Taylor Street. Before closing its doors, the bottler made nearly 35 times the volume it did in its first year, producing 96,504 gallons of Coca-Cola in 1956, according to CocaCola’s records. Nearly as deep as the building’s history with Coke are Carlisle’s family ties with the beverage company. His father, Ernest Carlisle, was a soda jerk who told his son stories of the days when Coke barrels would arrive at his father’s store, Carlisle and Ward Druggists. There, inside what is now Angelo’s Restaurant, Ernest Carlisle would make Cokes at the counter for his customers. Though John Carlisle might not admit to a first Coke memory himself, he vividly remembers his first encounter with the old plant he now owns. When he was a Boy Scout, his troop toured the plant and watched the bottling process and Cokes coming off the line. At the end of the tour, they all left with Griffin-made Cokes and lots of smiles. Carlisle believes those positive connotations and feelings about what went on in Griffin translate to good business now. “I don’t have to try and make people have a positive feeling about this building. It’s inherent. It comes with it, and that means a lot to an investor. And it’s not just feelings—it’s location. The building is a landmark. “What’s been interesting to me is everyone knows this building, he says. In the two years he’s owned it, Carlisle has never had to give the physical address to anyone to identify where it stands. Three words— the Coke building—and anyone in town knows exactly which building he’s talking about. That’s good for the landlord, and good for the 33 businesses like Dry Falls Outfitters, Franklin and Rosemary Clothing Boutique, About Bodies Yoga Studio, and many others that call the Coke building home. “Tenants love this building. They love the ambience, the exposed brick walls, Carlisle says. “It’s built like Fort Knox. As is often the case with historical buildings, the Coke building
became available to Carlisle for the right price at the right time. He thought it needed to be preserved, he admired the building and its place in the community, and he also thought it would serve as a good business for him. Carlisle warns, “We have to be so careful. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Roughly 60 miles away, the Coke building in Fort Valley was demolished to make way for a fast food restaurant. All that remains is the sign. Seeing himself as one of many caretakers in Griffin’s history, Carlisle is devoted to preserving, protecting, and sharing his building. Carlisle’s hopes are twofold. He aims to solidify and expand the Coke building’s role not only as a place to do business, but a home for community events; and at the same time, he looks forward to joining fellow Griffinites in rediscovering and appreciating our everyday history with a brand that’s served as the backdrop for 127 years’ worth of memories. “What I want people to do is to recognize the role of Coca-Cola. When you order a Coke, you’re saying more than ‘I want a soft drink,’ you’re saying ‘This is a part of my life and my memories.’

The Truth About Teachers
As the end of sumMer draws near and the new schoOl year sneaks up on us alL toO
anonymous local teacher was
quickly, an
inspired to spilL a few best-kept “company secrets.” Here, in her words, are a few truths about teachers that you should know.
We are human.
Seriously. Take us off of the school-bus-sized pedestal, throw away the apple earrings, and donate the puff-painted pencil-shaped tote, people. Today’s teacher is no different from you. Yes, we are role models for your children, and I am thankful to say that I have been surrounded by a majority of educators that you would be proud to have teaching your offspring. Yes, we have that pesky code of ethics we signed reminding us to watch our behavior and not to post those girls-night-out party pics on Facebook, but we are still human, still adults. We make mistakes. We lose our tempers, get speeding tickets, drink alcohol, get divorced, forget things, spell words wrong, curse, get tattoos, and shop without makeup. Our houses (and classrooms) are sometimes dirty. We are teachers by profession, but we are human just like you. There are few professions in which perfection is an expectation—unfortunately for us, teachers are in one. Too often, the harsh hand of judgment comes down stronger on teachers than anyone else.
We hate holiday parties.
This is one I’ll bet we both share. You know you hate them too. You spend the day before frantically trying to remember what you signed up to bring. How many kids are in the class? Wait…that one girl is allergic to something, right? What is it? Do we attempt monogrammed goody bags like that one kid always brings? I’m a parent;; I feel your pain. As a teacher, it is no better. All 20+ kids come rolling in that morning, parents not far behind, carrying their prized themed cupcakes as if they’re gold. You can see the students size up the competition on the back table, w w w.k it chendr aw er.net

making sure their goody bags outdo everyone else’s. Parents do the same, only they’re making sure they aren’t the only ones who forgot and picked up store-Âmade cupcakes on the way to school this morning. After the sugar showdown, you’re out the door and off to grown-Âup land. We teachers are left in the room where the only things outnumbering the kids are the sugary treats they will consume in a few short hours. You get the picture here. We hate holiday parties.
Education is political.

What does this fanatical culture mean to the average, or even rabid, fan living in the Southeast? The answer to this question is very subjective. Not long ago, a friend of mine asked me if I had seen any good movies lately. “Yes,” I said confidently, “Cloud Atlas. It’s great.” “Cloud Atlas. Huh. What’s it about?” my friend asked. I paused for a moment. How on earth to describe this wildly ambitious endeavor? Co-directed by Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski, and Tom Tykwer and based on the acclaimed novel by David Mitchell, the film offers six different stories which take place in six different time periods, all of which intertwine in terms of plot and theme in ways both subtle and dramatic. It switches genre

and tone from story to story, jumping between a stirring historical epic, a passionate period romance, a political thriller, a cheerful comedy, a science-fiction action film, and a post-apocalyptic drama. It features a host of esteemed actors, all of whom are playing multiple parts over the course of the film, occasionally changing gender and race along the way. The actual themes of the movie don’t come into focus until late in the proceedings, so early on the viewer will be spending a significant amount of time just attempting to keep up with who’s who and what’s taking place when (and why, and how, and is that little old man actually Susan Sarandon in heavy makeup?). Oh, and it’s nearly three hours long.
man attempting to escape the confines of a ruthless retirement home, or a genetically engineered clone trying to establish her own identity, each of the central figures is in search of some measure of freedom. By creating this thematic link in stories which take place in the past, present, and future, the film reminds us of some important basic facts. There will always be people fighting for liberty, and there will always be people attempting to deny liberty to others. The fight for liberty will always be essential, and it will always be an extraordinary challenge. Cloud Atlas attempts nothing less than a sweeping portrait of humanity as a whole, elegantly capturing the beauty and horror the human race is capable of achieving.
“Our lives are not our own. From womb to tomb, we are bound to others. Past and present. And by each crime and every kindness, we birth our future. “ As you may have ascertained, Cloud Atlas isn’t exactly the world’s most conventional or accessible film. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was one of 2012’s most prominent flops at the box office, earning back only a small fraction of its large budget. Even so, I have hope that the film will find new life on home video, because this is a movie which deserves a large, passionate fan base. So many movies rely on weary formulas, doing their best to mimic the trends of other popular films. Sure, there’s a place for flicks like Zombie Superhero Hangover Party: Fast Cars of the Apocalypse (at least I think that’s what it’s called), but it’s always a breath of fresh air when a major studio tosses aside convention and swings for the fences. It would take an entire issue of this publication to begin detailing the specifics of the plot, but suffice it to say that all of the stories are united by their support of one thing: liberty. Whether it’s a slave yearning to break free of his chains, two people in love attempting to defy society’s restrictive conventions, an elderly

The ensemble cast works hard to ensure that the vision of the filmmakers is achieved. You’ll find the likes of Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant, Ben Whishaw, and many others playing all sorts of roles over the course of the film. While not every actor is entirely convincing in every part, the decision to keep recycling the same cast members over and over in the stories (not to mention having them change genders and races now and then) hammers home the film’s beautiful message: we’re all fundamentally the same, and we all deserve the opportunity to live free. Despite its complicated plot and structure, at its core, the film is simply a three-hour adaptation of William Wallace’s legendary scream: “FREEDOM!” “Cloud Atlas. Huh. What’s it about?” After what must have seemed like an eternity, I finally landed upon an answer: “Well, it’s basically about everything.”

Supporting Mackenzie’s Cure & TogetherWorks 46
( 7 7 0) 412 - 0 4 41
Great Times, Great Causes BY RACHEL SCOGGINS This year’s Doc Holliday Beer, Wine & Arts festival raised $3000 in proceeds, more than double last year’s proceeds. Thanks to those who participated, $2000 will be donated to Mackenzie’s Cure and $1000 to TogetherWorks.
Mackenzie’s Cure
Mackenzie’s Cure is a charity started by Lindsey Milani to benefit her ten-yearold daughter, Mackenzie. Mackenzie was born without a bladder and has had to have several reconstructive surgeries. All proceeds help pay for expenses related to Mackenzie’s treatment.
Recently, Mackenzie had 14-hour reconstructive surgery to begin the process of rebuilding her bladder. This was only stage one. In November, Mackenzie will go for stage two of the surgery, which will complete the bladder reconstruction. Being born without a bladder also damaged her kidneys. She is in stage two, borderline stage three, kidney failure, and doctors are discussing a kidney transplant in her early teens, if not before, because Mackenzie is plagued by chronic kidney disease. When the doctors in Georgia couldn’t help her anymore, Mackenzie started seeing specialists at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) in Ohio. Money raised through Mackenzie’s Cure will help fund weekly out-of-pocket expenses—around $75 a week—in addition to travel expenses. When Mackenzie has the surgery in November at the CCHMC, the family will be in Ohio for a month; then, they will have to go back to Ohio every month or two for the following six months. “Mackenzie wants to take care of herself,” Lindsey said. “She’s in gifted classes, and even when she’s in the hospital for a month, she takes her schoolwork with her.” Lindsey and Mackenzie’s father, David Kaufman, do all they can, with the help of family, friends, and the community, to get Mackenzie the best medical treatment possible.

TogetherWorks
TogetherWorks started as an effort to bring together several different causes. At first, it was a grant-writing organization, which, while doing its work, discovered that there is a lot of money available for great causes. TogetherWorks now helps causes get access to this money. The model is to help organizations by providing them the infrastructure to be a nonprofit. Mostly, TogetherWorks is focused on the few organizations they helped initially. One of these is TogetherWorks Nicaragua, a charity focused on feeding children in Nicaragua and

giving them a sustainable growth experience. When it started several years ago, TogetherWorks Nicaragua began by feeding children on the west coast of the country every chance they got. At first, they were only able to feed a couple hundred children at a time once or twice a week. Now, the charity feeds over 1,000 children in different places throughout the country five meals a week (5,000 meals total). The charity also gives scholarships to help kids go to school and receive uniforms. TogetherWorks Nicaragua aided in building a medical clinic and also provides medical supplies for the few hospitals there. “It doesn’t take much to give them more than they had before,” said Nathan Jones, president of TogetherWorks. “We want to grow that program. We’re trying to help (the people) grow beyond just feeding them.” TogetherWorks Chinandega is a separate but similarly focused effort begun within the last year in hopes of repeating the successes of TogetherWorks Nicaragua. This effort is more centralized to the town of Chinandega, Nicaragua, estimated to be the third-largest town in the country of Nicaragua. Another charity funded by this organization is TogetherWorks4Vets. One of the organization’s board members, LuAnn Callaway, is a counselor who works with active soldiers and veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). “Soldiers coming back from these recent wars are going into states of depression, and there’s not a lot of good help for them,” Jones said. “There’s a glitch in the system.” Since seeking medical help for PTSD can be career limiting, fewer soldiers are seeking help. Since soldiers can talk with chaplains confidentially, Callaway travels around the country and provides training seminars to help unit chaplains diagnose and treat PTSD. She also personally counsels several soldiers who are getting PTSD treatment with the support of TogetherWorks. The counseling sessions are conducted through Lighthouse Counseling Clinic in Stockbridge, but there is limited space because of lack of funds. “We are in desperate need to find more funds for this program,” said Jones. TogetherWorks also works with Hope for Holly, a charity that benefits a terminally ill mother of three small children. The proceeds help her family with medical expenses. According to Nathan Jones, “We’re open to extending more help for that family and to do the same for others in need.”
TogetherWorks has an all-volunteer staff, so approximately 98 percent of donations go to the charities. Contributions may be sent to 1514 Rock Quarry Road, Stockbridge, GA 30281. For more information, contact Deborah (DJ) Perry at 678-758-6913.
