October 11-19, 2019 • October 9-17, 2020 Willkommen! Since 1969, Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest has grown to become Canada’s Greatest Bavarian Festival and host to the largest Thanksgiving Day Parade in the nation. This nine-day festival begins on the Friday of the Canadian Thanksgiving long weekend with a ceremonial “Tapping of the Keg”. Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is the third most recognized event among Canadians and attracts over 700,000 participants annually. It’s an opportunity to gather and celebrate – a ritual observed with great enthusiasm and pride. With authentic Bavarian offerings of delicious schnitzel, traditional German dancers and lively oompah music, Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is sure to thrill festival guests of all ages! Kick up your heels at a Festhalle, sample some sauerkraut, or dig into a pancake breakfast. The positive vibes at Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest are undeniable – and contagious. Join us for the 2019 celebration and discover the true spirit of Gemütlichkeit in Kitchener-Waterloo!

What a Parade! – Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest features Canada’s largest and most sensational Thanksgiving Day Parade. On Monday, October 14, over 150,000 spectators will line the 5 km parade route eagerly awaiting the colourful floats, clowns and marching bands. Ecstatic children, neighbourly greetings and hot chocolate are regular fixtures at this event. Bring a non-perishable food item for the Onkel Hans Food Drive, and contribute to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region. The Oktoberfest Thanksgiving Day Parade is televised across Canada on CTV. Experience our Festhallen – Celebrate in any of our 10 accredited Festhallen during your Kitchener-Waterloo

Oktoberfest visit. Each Festhalle has its own unique Bavarian atmosphere, cuisine and entertainment, including bands, Bavarian dancers, and the warm spirit of Gemütlichkeit. Many festhallen host Family Days on Sunday and Monday of Thanksgiving weekend, when guests of all ages can enjoy the fun together.

Visit Our Castle – A visit to our Festival wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest

Frequently Asked Questions For more information, visit www.oktoberfest.ca or call 1-888-294-4267. What is a Festhalle?

Festhallen are Bavarian themed venues that can welcome 250 to 4,500 people! While there are five traditional German Clubs, all Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest Festhallen are accredited and offer award-winning oompah bands, bavarian dancers, and mouthwatering German cuisine. Each Festhalle is unique, catering to all ages - from the young to the ‘young at heart’!

What should I wear to a Festhalle?

Dress code at the Festhallen is clean and casual, and Bavarian tracht of course! Proper footwear is also a must, for all of the dancing you’re sure to do!

What is tracht?

Tracht is traditional German clothing worn by both men and women. Dirndls consist of a blouse, bodice, full skirt and apron, and can be made in a variety of fabrics and styles. Lederhosen, or Bundhosen, are men’s breeches made of leather and can be either short or knee-length. In the past, lederhosen were only worn by men, but in recent years women have adopted the style as well.

What is a Guaranteed Arrival Time?

The Guaranteed Arrival Time (GAT) is one of the most important guidelines for our success in accommodating so many people. Advance ticket holders have a specific period of time (GAT) that they are allowed to enter a Festhalle. People who have not purchased advance tickets often wait in line to gain admission, and after the GAT, if the Festhalle is not filled to capacity they are allowed to enter. Any pre-sold tickets are still honoured after the GAT, but ticket holders are required to wait in line.

What will the weather be like during the festival?

It is difficult to predict weather for the festival - 2016 was cool and sunny with a few days of rain, 2017 was sunny and warm! 2018 sunny and better than expected! Watch your local weather station for an up-to-date forecast!

How can I get back to my hotel from a Festhalle?

Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, in collaboration with Molson Coors Canada, Grand River Transit and participating Festhallen, is proud to support responsible choices initiatives. Each Friday and Saturday during the festival, Festers can ride the bus and the Region’s new LRT for FREE from select Festhallen to the City’s Core, Downtown Kitchener.

Where do I buy tickets and souvenirs?

The Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest Official Retail Store is your one-stop shop for all your ticket and souvenir needs! From annual souvenir buttons and pins to traditional German steins and tracht to postcards and magnets, the Official Retail Store has something for everyone! Tickets for Festhallen and other events are also available for purchase. If you can’t make it into the store, shop online at www.oktoberfest.ca!

Is there bus parking available?

Yes, most of our Festhallen have parking lots that can accomodate buses. Please use the contact information provided for more information on a specific Festhalle’s parking availability.

Do you have photos available to use in advertising materials?

We’re happy to provide Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest promotional photos for use in your bus tour advertising materials. Please contact info@oktoberfest.ca for assistance.
