Jambo Kenya! The KiteWorldWide Lodge Kenya is almost legendary. For some years now many kitesurfers have come to this place and they couldn’t believe what they experienced.

restaurant

s

We found this wonderful spot in 2012 and ever since we took care of the management, in order to take better care of the individual needs of kiters. The ground base is a heavenly powdery beach with flat water directly located at a river mouth, sheltered by a distant reef. And there is wind, a lot of constant wind for almost 7 months a year. Only 80 km south of Mombasa you will find this natural mangrove reserve and in the middle of it, there is our Lodge. Our private beach stripe belongs to the most beautiful ones throughout Kenya. Kenya KiTesurfing

The main spot, Mwzaro Beach, is a five kilometer wide river mouth, which is protected by mangrove forests in the north and south, and by a reef in the east. That is why the water remains flat and shallow, even in strong winds or high tides.Due to the changing tides and sand banks, the conditions do change though and offer a great variety, also for advanced kiters.

flipmode island + Dreamlike kite lodge – now managed by KiteWorldWide + Diverse flatwater spot + Absolutely reliable wind in winter + VDWS kitecenter with only the latest gear + Exclusively at KiteWorldWide

8

We also offer a trip to the exclusive KiteWorldWide island, Flipmode, everyday during the summer season. You’ll take a boat about 20 minutes until you get to the large sandbank. There you’ll find a huge shallow area about 1 km wide. On the side with offshore wind, there is a boat just in case, so you don’t have to worry about drifting away. Just like almost all the spots on the Indian Ocean, Flipmode Island is dependent on the tide. 2.5 hours before and after the tide, you can enjoy some awesome kitesurf sessions. In the winter, this spot will be offered one or two times a week as a highlight. This is where the downwinder tour will begin, approx. 4 km above the open water up to the KiteWorldWide Lodge. To take part in this tour, you will have to be able to kitesurf upwind perfectly. Season is from December to March and from end June until September.

kiTeworldwide

lodge

the kiteworldwide Lodge “Where God makes holidays” is the motto of the KiteWorldWide Lodge in Kenya. Mwazaro Beach is located in the middle of a mangrove nature reserve on a private peninsula.Despite its beauty, this is a place which has been visited just by a few tourists. In 2009, we discovered this beauty and signed the contract right away. The Lodge has 38 beds dispersed on original palm bungalows (Makutis), coral houses and apartments. The restaurant is located right in the center and is a great place to chill. There’s also a Rooftop Kiters’ Bar on top of the main building where you can sip great cocktails with a view of the jungle on the one side and the ocean on the other. The area around the Lodge is guarded by a professional security team, so you won’t be disturbed by annoying beach boys and your valuables will be safe—in opposition to a holiday at the popular tourist destinations in Kenya. Since our goal is to be a sustainable tourist establishment, we use our own well and of course, also solar panels and wind power for energy supply.

caTering Your travel price includes breakfast and dinner. Forget large hotels with those impersonal buffets of stale bread and warm orange juice. At our Kenyan private island lodge you get fresh shrimp, beef, chicken, fish or vegetarian options for dinner. Our cook was educated in Zanzibar and therefore serves delicious meals influenced by the Indian, African and Creol cuisine. Normally you will have dinner at a long table together with all guests so you can exchange your experiences from successful kitesurf sessions or other activities. In the afternoon, you can grab a bite at the Beach Bar. Typical African dishes and classics like a club sandwich, tasty burgers, shrimp and much more for fair prices. Our Kitesurfers‘ Rooftop bar invites you in the evening for a beer or cocktail during sunset.

10

Palm HuTs (Makuti) The cheapest and most origin way of spending your vacation at the KiteWorldWide Kite Lodge. These are typical African huts made of palm branches and wood situated directly on the beach, each with a chic small terrace for relaxtion. At night the warm wind blows through the palm branches, and you can hear the crickets chirping. It can’t get more African and romantic than this! There is a washing basin on your terrace and the nine Makuti huts share three bathrooms with toilets and freshwater showers—all are cleaned several times a day!

coral houses These stone-cottage bungalows are divided into two accommodation units with two separated entrances. One at ground level and one on the second floor, both luxurious and lovingly decorated. Each has its own bathroom, bedroom, and living room. The units at ground level have terraces with a direct view to the spot. The units on the second floor have a balcony and a roof-top terrace with a breathtaking view to the mangrove forest as well as to the beach and the ocean.

ApartmentS The apartments are located in the main building and furnished with three beds devided on two bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom and a toilet. Besides that, you‘ll find a large sun terrace with a view of the spot. Decorated in African style with much attention to detail.

ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES IN Kenya

Further Activities (to book at sight for an additional charge) DIVING This Only a few minutes by car and a short boat trip away from the KiteWorldWide Lodge, you’ll find one of the best diving areas on this planet. We partner with an official PADI/Naui diving school led by a dutch couple. Selina und Harm are both PADI MSDT Dive & Emergency First Response Instructor. They offer various dive lessons in different diving areas around Kisite and Wasini. SAFARI In the summer, the historic center of Ulcinj becomes a party town. At least once you should risk a look and check out the city at night. We will take you to town to a nice cocktail bar on the promenade and maybe we will end up in one of many clubs this town has to offer. A holiday in Kenya without going on Safari is just like a kitesurfing holiday without wind. We offer organized tours which leave directly from the Private Island Lodge and strongly recommend at least a two-day safari, for example into the Tsavo East and West National Park. Tsavo East Safari This fairly short safari – two days in the Tsavo East National Park – is an adventure to the “red elephant” including one night stay in a double room, full pension and all park entrance fees. Tsavo East and Safari A three-day safari in the Tsavo East and West National Parks, 2 night stay in a double room, full pension and all park entrance fees.

12

SUP Canyoning In Kenya, it usually seems like the wind starts at the push of a button in the morning. For the early birds among you, stand up paddling is awesome and a great whole body workout. You’re in action the whole time, since you have to constantly balance yourself, and really use all of the muscles in your body. A great start for the day. SNORKEL EXCURSION If you don’t feel like going diving or taking a diving course, you also have the option of going snorkeling. You’ll head out on a boat into the open sea and can experience the unbelievable underwater world. It will be an unforgettable experience you should not let slip past you. VILLAGE TOUR A guide will show you the life of the people that live around the KiteWorldWide Lodge. You will visit a school and get the chance to get to know something about the “real life” of the Kenyan people. In this village there is an old Baobab tree which is supposed to posess certain energy and spiritual power. You will also visit some local (handycraft) shops. DEEP SEA FISCHING You spend a day out at the sea on a fully equipped fishing boat. You and your company get the chance to fish something for your dinner. When you are back at the lodge our chef will prepare your catch! MANGROVE TOUR Discover the mangrove woods wildlife just a half hour boat ride away from the lodge.

ARRIVAL

IMmunization and medical provisions

Many airlines fly directly to Mombasa from different airports in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland (ie. Condor, AirBerlin, KLM, or Swiss). A direct flight usually lasts about 8 hours.Upon your arrival at the airport, you will be picked up by our friendly lodge personnel holding a KiteWorldWide sign. You will then have plenty of time to collect your thoughts and jot down your first impressions of this unbelievably beautiful country on the 1.5 to 2 hour drive to the Lodge.

There are no required immunizations for tourists entering from Europe. However, malaria medications are advised, due to the risk of mosquitoes throughout the whole year. Please consult your personal physician first. The CRM provides current information about medical advisories while traveling at www.crm.de. Because of the wind and salt water, there is a very small chance of mosquitoes along the coast. The best protections always is clothing which covers most of your body and good insect repellant. Nairobi and Mombasa in particular have many private hospitals with well-educated doctors. Medical treatment outside the important cities is also good. The closest well-provided international hospital is located approximately 40 minutes from the Kite Lodge, and ambulances can reach the Lodge in 45 minutes.

BANKS AND CREDITCARDS Banks are open Mondays to Fridays from 9am to 3pm. Some branches are also open on Saturdays from 9am to 11am. Many banks are equipped with 24-hour ATMs. The banks at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Nairobi) and at the Moi International Airport (Mombasa) also provide 24-hour currency exchange services (forex services). Major credit cards like Visa or MasterCard are accepted throughout most of Kenya. You can also take out cash from the counters at banks or ATMs. DOCuMENTS AND VISA

Our school is the only, fully VDWS certified kiteschool in Kenia. Kiterservice consists of: Start- and landing service, support by teachers and kite cleaning. Which Kite do I need?

Europeans are required to have a valid passport for six months and a visa—which can be easily obtained at the airports in Nairobi or Mombasa ($50 or €40). You need a valid international drivers license in order to rent a vehicle.

In summer 9-15m (most used kite 12m) In winter 9-15m (most used kite 12m)

ELECTRICITY The voltage used in Kenya is 220/240 V 50 Hz. Plugs are three-

In the highlands, summer clothes are usually preferred with a sweatshirt for the mornings, evenings and air-conditioned rooms. On the coast, you only need light summer clothing. Nudism and “nothing on top” are illegal.

pronged. If you are bringing a charger for a camera or other electronic device, it is recommended that you also bring an adapter. Adapters are also available upon arrival. There are German sockets in the Kite Lodge, but please take note that there is no electricity in the Makuti Huts (you can charge electronic appliances in the bar).

climate In Kenya has a mild tropic climate. The average yearly temperature in the capital Nairobi (1,518 m) is a maximum of 25°C (77°F) and a minimum of 13°C (55°F) in the coastal city Mombasa (15 m) at max. 30°C (86°F) and min. 23°C (73°F). There is a good amount of sunshine throughout the year. At night, it cools off and stays pretty cool into the early morning hours. The long rainy season lasts from the end of March to May and the short rainy season from the end of October to the beginning of December. Rain showers can sometimes become heavy and usually fall in the afternoon and at night. Usually the showers are scattered and do not stretch over several days. February and March are the warmest months, July and August the coolest.

TRAVEL SEASON

Tip

Kenya is the perfect year-round destination. The main season takes place from december till march. During this period, you‘ll find warm and dry conditions, which are usually percieved as most comfortable for tourists. At this time, the lakes of the Great Rift Valley are struck by the biggest swarms of birds. The time from June to September is equally popular, as the weather conditions are dry as well.Rain falls from end of March till May (and in lower magnitude also from end of October till the beginning of December). At this time it is quieter in Kenya, what makes it easier to find accomodations and also the prices are clearly lower. Usually, the rain hardly affects the tourists, as it usually mainly rains at night.

Giving tips isn’t the rule but still advisable. Tour guides, waiter and hotel staff can be given tip according to your own discretion.

SAFETY

Please watch out for the CITES regulations on animals and plants. You can find more information about exportation limitations under http://www.cites.org

In terms of safety, Kenya doesnt differ from any other holiday destinations. Healthy common sense is the most important rule for your security. Avoid displaying expensive objects, do not walk alone in dark areas at night and follow the instructions of your guide while being in the bush. Moreover, it is advisable to deposit objects of value and flight tickets in the hotel safe. Language

Currency The official currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KSh) in denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 Shillings. There are also 5, 10, 20, and 40 Shilling coins. Visitors can exchange money at banks, exchange kiosks or authorized hotels. Traveler’s checks are usually accepted. There is no limit to the amount of money you can exchange in Kenya. We recommend that you exchange leftover Shillings into foreign currency before you depart. customs

Time Difference Kenya is two hours ahead of the mid-European time zone. Since Kenya does not observe daylight savings time, there is only a one hour difference in the summer.

English is the language of communication in Kenya. Most of the hotels, restaurants and tourism facilities do speak English. The national language is “Swahili”. Some Swahili basics will certainly be handy. Here are some examples: Hello – Jambo / How are you? Habari?/ I am fine – Mzuri/ Thank you – Asante/PleaseTafadhali/ Bye - Kwaheri Phone The country code for Kenya from your hometown is +254, If your cell phone provider allows you to roam, you can use Kenya’s mobile phone network which is available in most large cities and tourist areas. Time Difference Kenya is two hours ahead of the mid-European time zone. Since Kenya does not observe daylight savings time, there is only a one hour difference in the summer.
