FREE 2 YEAR WARRANTY! A 3D printer is a big investment and one that should serve you well over an extended period of time. CEL, the manufacturer of the Robox printer are so confident in the design of their product that they offer a 2 year warranty as standard on the product.

REPLACEMENT PARTS So you decided to try out some exotic filament material you found on the internet. It seemed a good idea at the time but now your print head is not working like it used to. Don’t worry, replacement print heads and extruder modules are available (at a relatively low cost) and you can easily change them yourself.

3RD PARTY FILAMENTS 3rd party filaments can be fed into Robox and will create prints, but due to the wide range of materials and varying quality of filament, using them will reduce the warranty on some Robox consumable parts (particularly the print head & extruder). If you want to check 3rd party filament compatibility, please feel free to contact us prior to using them – 0845 8380781. 4

ROBOX 3D PRINTER FILAMENT Robox materials are supplied on a SmartReel which holds data about temperature settings, print speed, diameter and even the amount of filament which has been used on that reel. This makes printing very easy, you load the filament and AutoMaker will automatically change to the settings saved on the reel.

We stock a range of colours of filaments that are available in ABS or PLA. So what is the benefit of each option?

ABS – More flexible, can be hand

PLA – Biodegradable, more rigid,

finished, and gives an improved surface finish.

gives better layer bonding, and is low odour.

ABS filament (600g)

PLA filament (700g)

HOW DOES THE PRINTER WORK? The Robox is an extrusion style 3D printer. It works by forcing the print material, referred to as filament, through a heated nozzle. The heated filament is deposited in layers that cool and harden. These layers build up on top of each other to produce the final 3D object.

The size of the layers can be adjusted depending on the required print quality. Thicker layers are used on lower quality prints and smaller layers are used on the best quality prints. Changing the print quality can have a major impact on the overall print time. These print times can easily become many hours, so you should take care when deciding on the quality you need for a particular object.

DIFFICULT-TO-PRINT SHAPES

As the print process is based on building layers of material on top of each other, sharp overhangs or parts that start in mid-air can cause printing issues (as pictured above). It is good to consider this when creating 3D objects, so that they can be easily made. There is an option within the AutoMaker software called ‘print support material’ that allows additional supporting materials to be added to the print to support problem areas. This can then be removed (cut) from the final print to give the desired complete object.

AUTOMAKER PRINT SOFTWARE AutoMaker is the software used to layout your models (a .stl or .obj file), view the status of Robox and adjust the settings used during a printing or other operations. AutoMaker allows you to print (in Draft, Normal, Fine or Custom) within 3 very simple steps! AutoMaker has been designed to make 3D printing easier, allowing you to concentrate on designing parts to print and not needing to fiddle with the print settings to try to get a result. The default settings are tried and tested using the Robox filament, giving a repeatable and consistent result every time. Advanced users have all the control required to satisfy even the most complex print jobs and are able to easily share their custom profiles. CREATING 3D DESIGNS So if AutoMaker is used to print a 3D model, what software do you use to design your own 3D object? There are many 3D design packages that you can pick from. Here are some that are popular:

TINKERCAD

www.tinkercad.com

AUTODESK 123D

www.123dapp.com/design

SOLIDWORKS

www.solidworks.co.uk

AUTO MATERIAL DETECTION Robox filament is automatically detected and displayed in the software, as seen in the image on the opposite page. The filament is displayed in the virtual printer & the left sidebar in AutoMaker How the filament appears loaded into the printer

CONTROL MULTIPLE ROBOX 3D PRINTERS FROM ONE COMPUTER! If you have more than one Robox printer, they can all be controlled from one PC. The AutoMaker software and Robox printer use a simple colour coding system to show clearly which printer is printing which design. (This feature is in development and expected by around the middle of 2015.)

The colour of the selected printer is displayed in AutoMaker’s left sidebar, and also on the virtual printer graphic

RESOURCES AND SUPPORT MyMiniFactory.com is a free library of 3D printable, beautiful and useful objects. Included are number of designs created around Kitronik’s range of electronic kits. For example, you could make an amplifier kit and 3D print the case for it to be housed in. The My Mini Factory library can be accessed directly from within the AutoMaker software by using the ‘add object from cloud’ option within the layout area of the software.
