The 2014 KS3 National Curriculum was designed to feed into the new Design and Technology GCSE so this is a good starting point for departments planning for the changes from September 2017. Much of what feels like ‘new’ content is actually listed at KS3 and should already be taught by departments who have mapped their curriculum.
Effectively mapping KS3 will enable departments to have a more specialist focus when teaching GCSE. This will be less of a culture change for students, and makes things more manageable for staff, as well as enabling a programme of change over time. Here are 5 tips from D&T consultants Paul & Julie Boyd for getting started with your planning.

1 Map your KS3 against the 2014 KS3 National Curriculum (pull out keywords and headlines from resources on the D&T Association website).
2 Map the KS3 curriculum against keywords and headlines in the DfE D&T GCSE Subject Content (November 2015). This is the document exam boards have to use to create their specifications and it’s an easier starting point. It’s also useful to use this document to map the new GCSE content against what you currently teach to identify gaps.
3 Use this mapped content to develop your KS3 curriculum so it feeds into KS4. In particular KS3 is a good place to cover the broader materials content, as well as things like mechanisms, electronics and other content that might require more specialist teacher knowledge. This will enable a specialist material focus if you wish at GCSE. At options evening remember to emphasise the focus on material specialisms as these play an important part in the qualification.
4 Be open minded about all exam board specifications and don’t just choose the board you’ve always used. Once you’ve made your choice plan your curriculum using the specification to give you the level of detail that needs teaching. Include in your planning activities that embed KS3 learning into KS4 through short lesson activities and homework.
5 Coordinate with your maths department as the maths content is already taught by them (high end KS3). Identify how you will embed this content to reflect how maths is applied in D&T. 3

BLUE STYROFOAM SHEETS These highly versatile Craft Foam Styrofoam Sheets measure 25mm x 600mm x 600mm and 50mm x 600mm x 600mm. Though rigid and strong these Craft Foam Styrofoam Sheets are very lightweight and can easily be cut and shaped, making them popular with professionals and hobbyists alike. Styrofoam has a very high weight to strength ratio and has high mechanical strength in compression, tension bending and shear whilst still being very light. It is also an excellent thermal insulator and resistant to water and vapour. SERVO MOTORS A servo motor has on output that can be rotated to a specified angular position. The angular position is controlled by a PWM (pulse width modulated) signal, where the mark space ratio of the signal determines the required angle for the motor to go to. This makes them very easy to control using a BBC micro:bit, PICAXE etc. They have three connections – two for power and one for the control signal.

NEW! – RESISTIVE ANALOGUE THUMB JOYSTICK This is a self centring spring loaded analogue joystick, very similar to those found on the PSP1000. These compact joysticks have an interesting slide feel which makes it easier for the user to feel how far they've moved. This thumb slide joystick outputs two analogue voltages that represent the X and Y axis positions. It is rated at a supply voltage of 5V but we have found no issues when using it at 3V. They work well with the BBC micro:bit and with just a few blocks of code you can use the micro:bit’s LED matrix to track the joysticks movement, which makes for much more interesting gameplay possibilities.
