NEW! – LEARN TO SOLDER KIT This learn to solder kit is the perfect way to introduce students to soldering for the first time. Each student has to solder four resistors and an LED to the PCB. This gives them the chance to practice soldering 10 solder joints. The LED also teaches them that some parts will only work if they are soldered to the PCB in the correct orientation. Once built the students can check they have built it correctly by touching the PCB to the 9V PP3 battery, which is also supplied. The LED on a correctly built circuit will light up. This kit is supplied as a pack of 25 and requires soldering. The kit contains:

NEW! – WIND UP TORCH KIT Build a wind up torch or lamp using this simple kit. The board is powered by turning the shaft on the supplied motor. This powers the high brightness white LED and also charges the capacitor. The capacitor continues to provide power to the LED after the motor stops spinning. The longer and faster the motor is wound for, the longer the LED will stay on after the motor stops being wound. Requires soldering. The kit contains:

HIPS (HIGH IMPACT POLYSTYRENE SHEETS) Our new range of High Impact Polystyrene Sheets (HIPS) is available in seven different colours and in two different thicknesses (1mm and 1.5mm). Sheet sizes are 457mm by 254mm. HIPS are a highly versatile product that have many uses and can be worked easily with standard workshop tools. They are very tough, rigid and highly resistant to impact, making them a very hard wearing material. PRODUCT OBSOLESCENCE & SUPPLY ISSUES WHY HAVE WE RE-DESIGNED OUR AMPLIFIER? Over the years, our mono amplifier kit has been based around two chips. For both of these parts we have seen the chips either become obsolete or very hard to source: TBA820M LM386N-1
OBSOLETE SUPPLY ISSUES
Both of these chips are in PDIP (through hole solder) packages. The electronics industry is moving away from this type of packages to more modern SMT (surface mount) parts. Our new amplifier uses one of these more modern parts. The manufacturing equipment we have here at Kitronik allows us to ‘pre-place’ these parts on the PCB for students, as they are very hard to solder by hand.
WHAT BENEFITS DOES THE NEW AMPLIFIER DESIGN BRING? Redesigning a product can often be advantageous as it may allow a product to be improved, due to improvements in technology since the previous design. The chip we have used in the latest design has the following benefits:

It can be powered from 2 x AA batteries which are typically cheaper than a PP3 battery and are also easier to source.
It gives a true 1W output at a 5V supply, compared to the older products which needed well over 12V for 1W of output power.
These AA batteries will also last significantly longer than PP3 batteries (anything up to ten times longer).
As the new design can work at 5V it can be powered from a suitably rated USB supply.
NEW! – MP3 MONO AMPLIFIER KIT This is the new and improved version of our popular amplifier kit which can be used with any personal stereo equipment, including MP3 players. The kit is connected using a 3.5mm jack lead. It uses a modern 1W audio amplifier IC to produce high quality audio while being powered using just two low cost AA batteries. It also benefits from improved battery life when compared to our older version powered from a PP3 battery. The kit can run from any voltage from 2.2V to 5.5V. Requires 2 x AA batteries. ZIP HALO FOR THE BBC micro:bit Add some colour to you next coding project with our new ZIP Halo board for the BBC micro:bit. The ZIP Halo has 24 ZIP LEDs. These are individually addressable full colour LEDs. This means that each LED can display a huge spectrum of colours, allowing amazing colourful effects to be achieved. The ZIP Halo bolts directly onto the BBC micro:bit (not included) using five bolts which are secure and robust. The board also has extension connector pads (0.1” pitch) allowing more ZIP LEDs to be connected. The P1 and P2 micro:bit pins are also broken out to 0.1" pads along with power and GND. This allows for additional connections to components such as servo motors. www.kitronik.co.uk/5625 The ZIP Halo takes a supply voltage of 3.5V-5V and provides a regulated power supply to BBC micro:bit. Power can be connected using the JST input using the 3xAAA battery holder, LiPo battery, or JST lead (all listed below). NEW! – 16 SERVO DRIVER BOARD FOR THE BBC micro:bit This servo driver board for the BBC micro:bit allows up to 16 Remote Control (RC) servos to be driven simultaneously. It is based on the PCA9865 driver IC. The board produces a regulated supply that is fed into the 80-way connector to power the inserted BBC micro:bit, removing the need to power the BBC micro:bit directly. The Electro-Fashion range includes kits and also individual parts (for your own unique creations). The kit range includes simple sewable LED kits and a programmable ‘Igloo’ board. NEW! – KLIP HALO FOR THE BBC micro:bit Our new Klip Halo for the BBC micro:bit makes it incredibly easy to connect input and output devices to the micro:bit using simple clip leads, or by sewing using conductive thread. The Klip Halo simply and quickly bolts on to the micro:bit. All of the micro:bit pins can then be accessed using large, friendly connection points on the side of the Halo ring. There are also power and ground connections for powering the parts that are connected. The connection points have been design to allow our range of Electro-Fashion E-Textiles parts to be easily connected using conductive thread. This means a textiles project can be made interactive by adding a program to the micro:bit, which is easy to do using its online ‘drag and drop’ code editor!
